Has anyone else experienced this problem with their MPx220???

Okay I am on my 5th MPx220 (Warranty Exchange) because they all would just shut off for no reason.
I was talking to a friend and then he said he would call me back, so we hung up and after an hour I thought it was funny he hasn't called me back so I check my MPx220 and it is off. On one day it happened like 4-5 times. I even went out and bought a new battery from Cingular store and after fully charging that battery, the phone still shuts off for no reason.

Also I would charge my phone overnight and then reboot and my phone is on but then my wife will call my office and complain about me not answering my cellphone. I will look and my MPx would be off.

It is really weird problem. The first 2 MPx220's I put 3.50 and 3.51 and it would still shut off, So the last 3 I left the 1.43 ROM but thet still shut off. I just can't understand why.

Has this happened to anyone else?

My MPx220 has never shutdown on me by itself...however it has at times, decided not to shutdown when I try to, so battery pullout required. I leave my phone on for days to weeks without ever shutting down and have not had it turn off on me. I can't speak for the Asian ROMs, but i can say i've never had automatic shutdown problems with 1.43, 1.47, or 1.49.

It is really frustrating, and I hate having to call warranty exchange and spending over an hour on the phone with them.

It is a weird problem.

i had two friends that had that problem and it was a loose battery each time. you can try putting something between the bottom of the battery and the bottom edge of the phone so it keeps the battery pushed up towards the contacts at all times. it never happened again to either friend.

well the funny thing is I did put a piece a paper between the bottom of battery and edge of phone, and it still did it today. So either the piece of paper is not big enough or it is another problem.

I have the same problem, keep up the thread. Haven't tried the battery solution yet, but will and let you know.

Well I just got off the phone with warranty exchange again and they are sending me another MPx220. I will just get done talking to someone and then close the flip and then it shuts off. Or it is sitting there and I will press the side button to check the time and then it shows it for a sec and then it will go off and then i try and press the side button again and it will be off. It is a weird problem, this makes number 6. Hopefully this one will be better.

I actually had this exact problem, asked the same question on here, and was told the battery problem. I had a little thin piece of cardboard kicking around (like a box from something i purchased) and just cut a tiny strip out and wedged it below the battery (theres like 1/32nd of an inch available there) and I think I've actually had this problem one time since then, and that was a rather... vigorous, shall we say.. close after an annoying conversation.

I'd try the battery trick before you waste yours and the replacement centers time.

Thats the thing I tried the battery paper thing, and it would still do it, so I tried a little thicker piece and took awhile to wedge it in, but it would still shut off for no reason. It has to be something but I don't know what. I cannot believe 5 MPx220's would all have the same problem.

Number 6 is on its way to me. Should get it tomorrow (Monday 14th)

Get a smt5600. It is a much faster and more resposive phone anyway. I loved the look and feel of my MPx220 but the performance of the smt5600 surpasses my love for a flip. I traded mine in through warranty. THey said that they give one trade to a different phone. But you'll need to make sure they understand only a smartphone will do.

I had a lot of power problems with my MPx220 until I quit charging batteries in my phone. My problems seemed to arise from a poor connection between the charge and usb cables I have, and I tried several. I also think sometimes when this phone gets to a low power state it gets "confused" and may display a high level of charge when in fact it is very low.

I think at least in my case the problem is with the connector on the phone itself. I bought on ebay a small battery charger, sorry I don't remember the dealer, they were in Hong Kong. The charger came with two batteries for a really low price like 20-30 dollars plus shipping, maybe less I don't remember but cheap. I had it in a week and it works great. You plug whatever charger you have into it (small moto plug) 110 or 12 volt and battery is charged in a couple of hours. The charger is small only slightly larger than battery itself. I keep it in my car.

I have one issue with the above mentioned ebay seller, d88b, I looked them up so you could search him on ebay if you wish, their listing picture showed oem batteries and in fact aftermarket were shipped. The batteries work fine so I didn't argue. The aftermarkets explain the really low price.

To sum up, IMO if your 220 tells you it is fully charged don't necessarily believe it. I'm not an engineer and don't have any formal data to back up any of these statements but, I do know what absolutely worked for me. And it seems suspicious that you would have gotten five or six units with the same problem unless it is a design flaw to be worked around, like many things about this device, to tell the truth. One last thing, I do have one cable that will reliably charge my phone from my DESKTOP pc, it is a moto usb with a smaller connector of the two I have seen.

You guys will probably find me insane, but it actually seems to be working, so I will share my experiences.

First of all, I noticed that the shutdown problems tend to happen more often when the battery is not fully charged. So I make every effort possible to charge it whenever I can. Once it drops below 65% or so, I tend to worry a bit and check my phone more often. So my suggestion is, keep the damn thing powered.

Also, I used to have the phone shut off when I closed the lid before hanging up first. It wouldn't happen all the time, but it happened often enough that I had to train myself to hang up (i.e., press the red "hang up" button) first before closing the phone. Now the phone no longer shuts itself off when I close it.

Another issue I was having was text messages. When I received text messages, flipping it open would result in the phone shutting itself off half of the time. Of course, those of you familiar enough with Smartphone eccentricities will probably know that text messages are not saved immediately upon receipt. They're most likely saved on a timer, maybe every 5 or 10 minutes. Therefore the text message I would have just received would be gone when I turned the phone back on. Fantastic.

Well I found that if I don't open the phone fully, open it at maybe a 105 degree angle (it's really approximate; but the idea is to just make sure it doesn't go all the way to the "click" angle - i'm not expecting anyone to pull out a protractor every time they get an SMS), the phone never shuts itself off.

With those stupid tricks, my MPx220 hasn't shut itself off in over 10 days - something I thought unthinkable before. I even dropped it twice and it didn't complain.

All that said, it's a real f****ing pain to have to deal with all of that, and I cannot wait to get another smartphone, maybe the SP5. I adore this phone's functionality, but Motorola just completely turned me off of their products.
