Hi,

Ok this is my first post in HoFo so go easy on me if i ask something stupid. But i just want some opinions on bells 7250 and the upcoming 7130e...do i buy a 7250 or do i wait for the 7130e? I know its not released yet so the info isnt there but i have a chance to buy a 7250 for $300 and i dont know if i should get it or wait for the 7130? opinions?

thanks!

should i get a cpu on rebate now or get the new flashy one... it depends on what u wanna do with it... new IS evdo, and dont let the "for sure" fool you, theres debate as to if bell will flash the 7250 to become evdo... if ure a pda guy and want a bberry just to have one unit instead, jump on the 7250, if ure gonna keep it for years and looking for expanding ure usage to other things then... 7130...

Form factor is a biggy here too - the 7250 has the full keyboard, the 7130e has suretype.

For me price would be big too. The 7130 is sure to be $400+ (even with a 3YR), while the 7250 is a mere $50 when you get it on a 3yr w/voice and U/L data. Even if the 7250 doesn't get data it's still the speediest of the BBs available in Canada right now (1X is faster than GPRS) and is a very solid unit.

Me, I'd go with the 7250. Actually, I did.

Do not the $50 is only available to new customers in the event you are an existing cumstomer.

i guess this is more of a trial period....ive never had a blackberry and from what ive heard the 7250 is evdo capable but like bigbell said its not for sure going to be flashed to be able to run evdo. so im not sure, it seems like everyone that has a bberry loves it...will the 7250 become obsolete anytime soon?

Are you a current Bell customer?

Either way, I believe the standard return policy is 15 days or 100 voice minutes, no? Give a 7250 a try for a while?

the 7250 WILL be EvDO

You should peruse the Research in Motion forum here at HOFO....

Another good resource is http://www.blackberryforums.com

Reading up in these forums will help you make an informed decision.

ive already done extensive research...the only thing im really concerned with is if people have any info on whether the 7250 is a piece of hardware they can see themself having for a while or if it will need to replaced with the new slew of evdo sets coming out...but i think i may just igve the 7250 a try.

The 7130e will have a great screen, speakerphone, plenty of memory, great build, etc.

The only issue I have with the 7100 series is the lack of shortcuts and the "suretype" technology. However, if you've never used a Blackberry before, it may be easy and quick for you to adapt to suretype.

Another consideration is tethering for data (i.e. laptop). You cannot currently do this on the 7250. The 7130e will have this capability.

The 7250 (and all 7200 series Blackberries) allow shortcuts: One letter access to various applications or functions. And the full qwerty keyboard.

The rule to follow is this: If you use more email than phone, go with the 7250. If you use the phone more than email, then go 7130e.

Don't expect the 8700 for EVDO until Q1 or Q2 2006.

I've had my 7250 since March, and I love it. Its by far the best Blackberry I've ever owned. And I've owned plenty since my first 957 pager-style unit on Mobitex back in 1999.

I forgot to mention...(you probably know this already)
The 7250 is EVDO capable. Bell is supposedly enabling this with a software update sometime in December.

A note on suretype: I used a 7100r for about 3 months back when I was on Rogers so I've got some experience with it. It's great for typing common words but words that were not in the dictionary took FOREVER to type in. I would compare it to as slow or slower than typing them in on a regular T9 phone.

Sure, it learned them as you went - but it drove me nuts in the process.

alright thanks for the input guys...i think im gonna hold off for a bit and see if maybe the 7130e will be rigth for me...i use the phone way more than email but id just like to be able to access my email when i need it.

thanks for your time!!!

I have a question... is the 7250 compatible with a device that allows for better fringe service in northern Ontario areas where there is limited 800/1900 coverage? An antenna with additional gain for example?

You can't plug an external antenna into the 7250.

However, I've found the RF generally very good on the device.

Thanks for the quick reply...

Do you really beleive that. I would hazard a guess Q4 2006 or Q1 2007 would be a better bet.

I am completely confident in my prediction.

I am not going to ask how you could say so (but you can PM me the answer) but would this not be the first time a CDMA product from RIM was released within 8 - 12 weeks of a GSM per your feelings?

I'll ask you a similar question: Do you really think it'll take a year or more to get the 8700 EVDO model to market after the EDGE model (based on your prediction)?

Look at the history here: The 7290 was available in September 2004. The 7250 became available in February/March 2005. Assuming the same pattern, my prediction would be accurate for the 8700 (q2 2006).

However, I have it on good authority that this device will be out sooner than Q2. That's not to say that Bell will get it right away--I'm just saying the device will be commercially available.

Note that Bell is getting the 7130e before anyone else (including Verizon or Sprint)....

Pricing $399 is out for the 7130e on their site but still marked as coming...most likely next week.
