We should be getting our COU D357s anytime now. I'm looking forward to trying out this phone and the PTT service.

Posted by: xplode

im lookin forward to purchasing those phone, dependant on how IHAP responds to the other post if the volume is significant like the nextel, as ive heard the LG ugly slider is horrible volume wise.

Thanks Bobo, they look great!

ive heard that too, but i think only with a contract.. im going to buy it outright full price so i dont think il get a free one

Posted by: mendel

any update on pricing?????

Posted by: cingularkelly

No update on pricing, But I got my COU line phone today and I am having a really bad time useing the PTT...It keeps saying that the other person is unavailable.

Posted by: sevensinz777

i got my samsung today... having fun with it bothering other cor guys :-) i did have the same problem with unavail. users... i dont think some cou phones are setup with it correctly

Posted by: xplode

hows the volume on the samsung?

Posted by: sevensinz777

FREAK!!! ... the ptt portion is way better than the LG - NO DOUBT!!! but the audio quality of the inside speaker FRIGGEN SUCKS! its so low i had a hard time talking on the phone with customers and c-care... other than that the phone has been suprisingly fun to play with. the bluetooth is a lot faster than most bt phones, and ive been able to transfer MP3's and IMAGES from my nokia to the samsung with ease, also my b.t. adapter on my computer picks it up pretty fast and moves things around a lot easier... the first initial PTT is laggy... but after that its pretty loud and clear- all in all... sorry for this mixed up review but the phone audio will but most people... but other than that its pretty cool 6/10

This is my impression as well, I would take every call on speakerphone if I could. The PTT works great, the speaker inside the phone is not up to par at all...really hard to here I think. I really like some of the additional menu options that is in this phone in relation to other Samsungs. So far I can say that I'm somewhat impressed, but not blown away. I was expecting this to be a phone that I would hate, but its not that bad. Also, I can only assume that they tried to cut costs by leaving out the external color screen and camera, but I would have liked these options on this phone.

Posted by: ungratefulninja

I started using my COU today. The regular speaker is just awful. I've used a Samsung P107, a Moto V551, a V220, a Nokia 6010, and a Palm Treo 650 and all of those were louder. I was constantly having to tell people to speak louder.

On the plus side, the ringtones I've downloaded sounded good, better than a lot of the previous Samsungs. It has the vibrate THEN ring functionality just like previous models, I wish they'd add the option to vibrate and ring at the same time; like a Motorola, for example.

The speaker phone portion is reasonably loud, on par with a lot of the other speaker phones Cingular currently offers, although I've heard louder PTT-wise.

We have a demo model of the LG, but haven't had a chance today to play around with it much.

We did notice that some of us already had PTT service on our COU accounts and some of us (the manager included) did not have the PTT, so that may explain the difficulties some of you were having.

Just power-cycle the phone. I had the same problem, power-cycled my phone and I haven't experienced it again.

As for the volume level of the phone. Geesh, I think it's LOUD. I can't say I really use speakerphone on a lot of handsets, but the volume on my Samsung D357 is plenty loud for me...almost too loud.

You guys ever heard of Q-Tips?

Posted by: WirelessAndy

Thanks to my trusty pals at my local corporate store, I was able to fiddle with a d357 first hand (no PTT enabled, of course).

I slipped my SIM in, popped the battery on, and powered up.

First impression: It's a nice size. Not too puny, not too huge.

I really like the black and white external LCD. I think the screen is a bit too close to the top edge of the screen. The upper left corner almost cuts off the little "antenna" icon at the head.

There is a blinky LED, like previous Samsung models. Difference is, it only blinks in blue in standby. I could not find the option for other colors.

The screen is the Samsung Ultra-Fine and Bright type (non TFT) but not bad. On par with the SGH-x497.

Keys are hard plastic, like the x427. Not rubbery/spongy like the newer x497.

The side keys on the left consist of the volume up/down, but they're located towards the middle of the side. I kept hitting the volume keys by accident.

The right side has the voice command button on top, then the PTT button below that.

I'm happy to report the hinge is very sturdy. It doesn't snap open with a click, but there is not a hint of wobble anywhere. The top part of the flip doesn't get scuffed by the bottom half. In fact, the way the hinge opens, the top part actually rests on the BOTTOM half. It's hard to describe. You must see it in person.

There are two "nostrils" on the front of the phone. My in-store unscientific observations indicate that ringtones and speakerphone audio comes from here. Incoming calling audio for voice calls are very clear. I could sense no hissing, crackling or buzzing. However, at max volume, the level was only acceptable. There is no sense of cranking this phone to 11, like the x497. Perhaps this is because the earpiece is probably a normal earpice, not the hyper-amped one in the x497, which does triple-duty as an earpiece, speakerphone, and ringer.

I did not test PTT.

There is an email client on this phone, and I saw the bluetooth menu options. And guess what? Predictive T9 text dictionary is still messed up. Did not pass the Tanya Test (cannot learn and remember new words, like "Tanya".)

If the earpiece was louder (and if my wife was interested in using PTT) I would probably pick up this phone just for the form factor itself (monchrome external LCD, LED blinky, clamshell form).

Posted by: tendura

Volume on this phone has been pretty good for me. MP3 ringtones get a little distorted if you crank the volume all the way up. I've had only intermittent problems with PTT. Disconnects after 5 seconds. but when it works, it works really really well.

Posted by: ultradev5

Can you use the speakerphone or voice dial with the lid closed? I know that you should be able to with PTT and even bluetooth, but was curious if the regular cell calls would have this functionality.

Yes you can.

thanks for the reporting guys, i deciding im going to hold off on buying a ptt phone now, il let them work out the bugs and wait for some motorolas begining next year by then more people i know will have it anyways.

when will stores have this phone????

end of the week hopefully.

Late this afternoon, I got a notice that the Samsung D357 is being recalled. Has something to do with the phone power-cycling, while roaming and the phone closed. Sounds crazy, but that's the jist of it. I'm sure someone can fill in the details that I've left out.

However, the phone is being recalled.

you have got to be kidding me. the phone's already being recalled and yet it hasnt even been officially launched yet?

good heavens..... will Cingular ever get this thing right the first time around?

Posted by: indiana-moto

I heard from my Cin rep that this Sam may be pulled from the lineup due to Cellular problems, he said the PTT part of the phone is great.... just having problems with the cellular part (tunnel voice, dropped calls and what not)

Posted by: noodles5666

Hey just picked mine up from my local Cingular.

Posted by: xbox360gamer

I had the chance today to play around with a 357 today and I must say that it felt pretty darn cheap.

but on a side note, all the employees at my nearby corp were lusting over my W600i.

they were all like:

"good God, where did ya get it? we dont have any remote signs of when were supposed to be getting ours in..."

hehehehe.....

This is correct. I saw the same email today and we shipped back all the ones we were sent...before we even put them up for sale. However its probably just something that needs to be re-worked and then it will be re-released. In the end, its just a Samsung anyway, and regardless of PTT, Samsungs have always been only marginal on RF (reception) with Cingular.

Yea, my COU PTT is a miserable nightmare of a device. I have 2 repeatable glitches I can cause every time I try and reception BLOWS BLOWS BLOWS!!!

Posted by: CeluGeek

When will Samsung get rid of that ugly external antenna? They did it for their CDMA phones and for T-Mobile-style (non-850MHz) handsets. Why are Cingular customers always last on their list?

Posted by: xbox360gamer

I had my very first "hands on" PTT expierence today with a D357 and it was okay, I guess. the phone did feel very cheap though.

Posted by: rabisdogis

I've had a few problems with mine. If I am in the middle of a game and I get a phone call, the game ends...I lose the call and my phone rings over and over again. I have to pull out the battery to get it to stop. Also, when I am playing games, my character will disappear randomly but the ticker on the game will continue to countdown. The only other issue is the volume. Its really low.

everyone is saying that the lg feels cheap and now the sammy is being recalled...i want a moto ptt phone

Keep in mind that the manufacturers aren't wholly responsible. Samsung more than likely made the all the X-series and the PTT phone with the stub becasue Cingular wants it that way. The final decision is Cingular's as to whether or not they'll carry a specific handset. So if you want to complain, complain to both parties. not just the handset makers.

Samsungs have never been great on GSM.

Posted by: tuolumne

You sure you want to say that? Have you ever taken a look to see how the SGH-D500 sold? 10 million units worldwide, and the SGH-D600 can only capaitalize on that.

I too don't understand why they still give Cingular phones with antennas. They don't do anything anyways...they are just stubs...All of the GSM Samsung's in Europe are great phones, and most, if not all, have intennas.

I'm with you on the moto PTT phones...I like ruggedized anything, therefore I wish Moto would take the Nextel i560 (rugged, no camera, off network PTT and GPS chip) and make a GSM/Kodiak PTT version. I have a strange fascination with those rugged nextel phones...but alas, I choose to use a provider I can actually...well...USE !!!

One day long ago I wished for a metallic version of the Nokia 6230...and boom! they come out with the 8800...stranger things have happened.

I have 2 of the Samsung d357 with the new software and I can not get a headset to work on either one. The bluetooth works fine but not a regular headset. Could someone check and see if you phone is the sameway.
Thanks

It seems to work fine with the Samsung branded earbud, and the jabra headset that has samsung/lg on the label. The universal ones don't work.

Regular headset? You mean a wired headset?

I don't know what kind of headset jack the d357 has, but if it's a round one (like on the x497, x427) then you can't just use a "universal" 2.5mm plug. Samsung uses a proprietary pinout configuration using four conductors.

A generic one might FIT, and you may even hear something, but it won't work right.

I just got a d357 from the Cingular store and purchased an earbud at the same time that did not work - it was extremely intermittent. I went back to the store and they gave me a different one that works great - the package says "Compatible with Samsung Handsets" on the front, the cord is gray and the mic is a silver tear drop shape with "Samsung" on it. Don't know if they gave me the wrong one first time or what.

Wrong............

Posted by: la2037

One of the main reasons I selected the d357 was for hands free driving. Receiving a call is no problem, just press the "Voice Command/Speakerphone" key on the outside and you can answer in speakerphone mode. When placing a call with the phone closed, pressing the "Voice Command" key initiates the voice recognition which is brilliant, but the call is dialed without going to speakerphone mode. The only way I have found to put it into speakerphone mode is to place the call with voice command, then, while the call is being dialed, open the phone and press the "Voice Command/Speakerphone" key - the phone then prompts "Speakerphone On?" and you must quickly press "yes" with the left soft key or the Confirm key. Not exactly a simple hands free operation - anyone know of a better solution?

This is only an issue when using the d357 in the speakerphone mode (without a earbud/headset, or bluetooth).

Posted by: trojan9x

This has been released today. At least it has in my zip code.

Posted by: SonyStyle

I tried PTT from the Lg to the sammy in a corp store today, I must say it is very very cool..... But not something I would buy...

THe truth of it is, no one is going to buy one of these crappy phones when they are coming from nextel.... I agree with others who have mentioned this.

You cant leave little things off, like the d357.... why the heck does it not have a external color caller ID.. this isnt 2002..... I wouldnt buy it just for that.

Posted by: trojan9x

why hasn't this been marked as *released* yet?

good choice about going with the Samsung over the LG. my company just recently switched our service from Nextel to Cingular's PTT program and I'm hoping they did the right thing. they (meaning our company) has been so fed up w/ Nextel for God only knows how long that they were willing to try anything. we've been up and running now for almost a week and so far so good with Cingular's PTT. but then again, only time will tell how it'll be down the road.

oh, and by the way, we also went with the Samsung just because the LG looked like something that one would see in the clearance isle of your local Wally World store. well, thats not the real reason but you get the hint. that and my toss bosses valued my input on which one to use and naturally I chose to use the Samsung.

now the only problem for me is getting use to going from my full featured, slammed packed W600i to my Samsung which is like going from a Porsche Cayenne to a Kia Sorento.

I only found one holster on daydeal.com

All universal leather cases hold the volume key in and changes phone to vibrate mode.

Please post links for accessories!!!

speaking of which. has anyone tried the holster from daydeal.com yet?

Posted by: Bluez

I just went from a MOTO to this phone for the PTT functions but was wondering if there is some way to program pauses into the addres book like there was in the MOTO phone you just put the number and then p for a pause and the rest of the number but for some reason I cannot get this to work in the D357.

Also is anyone aware of a certain file size limitation to upload through Bluetooth?

Posted by: noodles5666

I uploaded 122 mp3 ringtones as soon as I got mine. And no problem with that. It totaled 11.6MB for all the ringtones.

Posted by: Naveen

i got the samsung today, the phone is way better than the lg. i will use the samsung while i wait for the moto. the ptt function is way better than nextel

Posted by: Bluez

Has anyone tried uploading any video clips to this phone yet? I have tried uploading some clips over bluetooth but havent been able to upload anything over 400k.

Posted by: ChocoDough

The D357 is a nice phone, and I found out an interesting thing with the Bluetooth.

Once you have pics. videos or audio files on the phone, you can put them in share mode. So if someone connects to your phone bluetooth wise, then they can just download whatever you have shared.

When they connect you have to confirm whatever password they put in. Once they are in, you can authorize them so they don't have to put the PW in all the time. Works pretty neat. Kool way to pass ringtones and stuff around the office.

But anyway, if Cingular has any real intention of pulling PTT users away from Nextel, they have to tell the manufacuers of the phones to give them a LOUD speaker. The Sammy might sound loud when I am at my store, but if I goto the local mall, I can't hear it. So people like contracters and blue collar workers that need to use their phone on a job site is never going to hear good from the speakers on the LG and the Sammy. They need something loud so they can hear while stuff like saws, hammers....etc....are going on in the background.

after swapping in the Samsung X497 that I tried....

its by far better than X497, just not as solid, and the external antenna scares me, since it could very easily break off... (at least it feels that way...)

DID ANYBODY NITPICK THIS PHONE YET?!?!?

Posted by: WirelessAndy

Sigh. No. Not yet. For some reason, I can't get myself to pick one of these up.

You're right, though; it doesn't feel as solid as the x497.

I am having trouble sending my MP3 music over to the phone through Bluetooth.. is anyone else having trouble sending files larger than 100 kb? I called Cingular and they told me there must be a CAP for file size but they didnt have the exact number. This might cause me to return this phone.

the CAP size is 300k for mp3. The file size cannot be or exceed 300k. 299k is the biggest file you can put in there.

ps I find it annoying that I can use the voice command to dial when the lid is closed, but have to flip open the phone in order to use earpiece or speakerphone..... why can't they make the speakerphone work while the lid is closed???

Posted by: JAGA42

Guys,

My bluetooth software lets my sync with my RAZR, 2125, 5600, 6515 and 551. It will not let me transfer anything to my D-357 through bluetooth. I can pair the devices, but when I transfer I get the following:

An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used.

Its not a file size issue. Any ideas?

What wallpaper size have we decided to use without white bars?

Posted by: la2037

Speakerphone use is my only problem with the D357. Voice dialing with the phone closed works great, but then it must be opened to switch to the speaker phone mode. Very poor for hands free use.

I got an original Samsung leather case from marquel.com. (The Samsung part number is 17200000090.) Even it needs to be stretched a little around the volume rocker key though!

DO they run in simillar matter to nextels where you can start a ptt session and close the flip and continue

You can actually start the ptt conversation with the flip closed. While the flip is closed, you can press the ptt button to give you the ptt contacts/recent calls and then press/hold the ptt button again to start the ptt call.

How do people think battery life is for the D357? I had a Nokia 6200 before this and its 2 year old battery seemed to last longer than the brand new one in my D357.

Getting to the point where I'd consider asking for a new battery (still within 30 day trial period) or even switching to V557.

I'm using cellular only, no PTT. In NYC.

Posted by: jervin123

when ever i go to manhattan my battery seems to die quicker and when i go down to maryland it seems to last longer (which i go once a year and thre from a friday night to sunday afternoon.) without being able to charge my battery but the last time i took it off the charger the second i was going out the door and shut it off at night

I just got the phone and I like it, but I have come up with 2 issues I hope someone can help me with...

1) when sending calander info over bluetooth from Outlook, all of my appointments are 5 hours off. Either the phone, or outlook it adjusting for time zone, but they do not need to....I transfer the appt, then have to manually edit the time.

2) I can send files via bluetooth, but how do I send games, and install them?

Thanks
Kevin

I haven't figured this out either.

I sent back the samsungs and swithced providers, since Cingular couldn't figure out a technical issue with my service....

I did get the files to go over. But they would not run on my phone either. The solution I used was to put both the jar and the jad onto a website, and then type in the url directly and d/l them into the phone. It installed and ran most of them great.

You don't need to pay for them (if you have already purchased them etc) but you do have to d/l them.

As for the contacts you can send the contacts to the sim, but you have to do it one at a time.

Hope that helps

What software does anyone recommend to upload, download, or sync the contact list with a PC? I have several hundred contacts in my old phone, and would hate to have to enter them again on my new D357.

Samsung customer service is clueless (the rep actually told me that he didn't think it was possible to maintain or sync the contact list in any cell phone with a PC!!!), Cingular customer service is likewise clueless (the rep sent me to a web page about CommunicationManager, which says it lets me connect my PC to the Internet via the phone, but says nothing about maintaining or syncing the contact list), and the Samsung support site says nothing about PC software for the D357.

I tried downloading PC Studio II for the D410 (a phone I picked at random, since I couldn't find Samsung software specifically for the D357). After a bit of research and head scratching, being a Bluetooth newbie, I finally figured out that I had to initiate a serial port session using the Bluetooth software on my PC, and then set up PC Studio II to use that COM port. It was then able to read my contact list, in a limited way:
- only one phone number per contact
- all numbers were considered cell numbers
- I couldn't figure out how to save these numbers to disk, or to load them from disk, or even copy them to the clipboard
- there is an import/export feature, but that only saves or loads the list maintained on the PC
- I couldn't figure out a way to transfer between the phone's list and the PC's list.
So unless these were my errors, that software is basically useless for the D357.

Any other suggestions?

Hello All,

I just recenty found this thread and thought I would post my experiences with my d357. I purchased two (one for me and one for my wife) on 03/02. So far we are both pleased with the phone and the ptt function.

Likes:
- ptt function is cool; but maybe not 9.99 cool. Fortunatly for me, my company is paying for it so I will keep it.
- mp3 ringtones. My old nokia could only use a special format.
- Main Contact list does sync with Outlook and outlook express. (More on this later)
- So far, so good, on reception, even in some big grocery stores.
- Bluetooth is very convienent for transfering data between phone and both my MAC and PC.
- Size and weight are small went folded; just right for my pocket.

dislikes:
- Separate contact list for ptt contacts. This feels clumsy to me. I would rather be able to pick a ptt contact from my regular contact list.
- Media net is so annoying, i want it gone. The middle button on the phone, between the directional keys, is the cingular symbol. If you press this first, it takes you to media net and you are charged right away.
- Only four different color themes for menus.
- Currently, I am unable to sync with my Outlook calandar. I hope that this is a bug that will be fixed at some point. My contacts sync just fine.
- The buttons on the side of the phone are easy to hit when on a call. It takes some practice getting used to them.

Other observations:
- Battery meter is somewhat misleading. There are only three bars. The battery will last a long time even though it indicates two bars left.
- Sound quality on the reciever is variable. When talking to other cell callers is seems okay. Other calls not so good. I have used the speaker phone without any complaints.
- I would like the ringer volume to be louder.
- The vib then melody function is nice, but ideally I would like to be able to set the delay. Most of the time I would want the delay to be zero.

I have a few more days before my 30 days are up, but I think I will be keeping this phone. It will probably last me a good long time.

In order to sync my d357 with my Outlook Contacts, I used PC Studio 3. The link is below:

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/d...Installer.ex e

Be sure to use PC Sudio's SW update option before starting a sync operation.

I have not been able to get my calendar to sync successfully. If there are any ideas out there, please post.

My computer is running WinXP with a D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth dongle to talk to the d357.

Kevin, one easy way to disable Media Net is by going to Settings, Connection Settings, Media Net, and changing the Bearer from GPRS to GSM. (I've done this.) Then you get an error message if you press the Cingular symbol... instead of a $$ charge...

Oh, and of course you can have Cingular just take the Media Net feature off your account...
