LG 9800 Owners - Access your Ringtones from the miniSD card !!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This is my first posting so please excuse me if I make an error.

I tried the new bitpim release 0.8.01. It now has the 9800 listed and can do most of the things it was made out to do. (bluetooth users dont need to use the "detect phone")

I have bluetooth adaptor so I connect via bluetooth. I was able to download my contacts into bitpim and transfer my custom ringtones to my phone.

I don't have the cable, but what I read from others that use this new update, you can use the 8100 cable. If you visit the bitpim site it gives you an tutorial on how to access ringtones from the miniSD card. I have posted it below: (I like this tutorial because you don't have to mess with or delete file within the phone's filesystem)

I tried this and it works like a charm. Thanks to the bitpim people for this information.

Access Ringtones from a miniSD card:

Transferring files to the miniSD card through the phone using BitPim is very slow, users should transfer files to the card directly from a PC.

1. On the miniSD card, create a subdir called ringers
2. Copy your ringtone files to the ringers subdir.
3. Insert the card back into the phone and start BitPim.
4. Retrieve Ringtone data from the phone:
1. Menu Data -> Get Phone Data.
2. Check on Ringtone, and click on OK.
5. Write Ringtone data back to the phone:
1. Menu Data -> Send Phone Data.
2. Check on Ringtone and Replace All, and click on OK.
6. All of the ringtones stored on both the phone and the card are now available for assignment.

Step 3 through 5 should be repeated for all changes made to the ringers subdir.

Access Wallpapers from a miniSD Card:

Transferring files to the miniSD card through the phone using BitPim is very slow, users should transfer files to the card directly from a PC.

1. On the miniSD card, create a subdir called images
2. Copy your wallpaper files to the images subdir.
3. Insert the card back into the phone and start BitPim.
4. Retrieve Wallpaper data from the phone:
1. Menu Data -> Get Phone Data.
2. Check on Wallpaper, and click on OK.
5. Write Wallpaper data back to the phone:
1. Menu Data -> Send Phone Data.
2. Check on Wallpaper and click on OK.
6. All of the wallpapers stored on both the phone and the card are now available for assignment.

Step 3 through 5 should be repeated for all changes made to the images subdir.

you can get the bluetooth dongle at wallmart staples target radioshack ect. and yes it does plug into usb they cost between 10 and 20 bucks, i have one and it works great. only reason i didnt take my vx9800 back to tell the truth

i have a cardreader from radioshack called the dazzle, is that the same thing?

Posted by: Mygraine

nope. it is called a bluetooth dongle, it looks like one of those usb memory cards

Posted by: Lebniis

So does this mean I can assign ringtones by choosing the mp3's I saved on my miniSD card?

Posted by: k.fury

ok i am new here a friend referred me to this forum. I just got the vx9800 yesterday.
so let me get this straigh. to set the my own ringtones as far as hardware i need to got buy a miniSD card and a bluetooth dongle and A usb cable, and I should be good to go?

Posted by: lgreenberg

This worked perfect.

Thanks.

Posted by: Sava2k

U Need Bluetooth or USB cable and a miniSD card. Then you will be good to go.

Posted by: Sava2k

For Lebniis, If you save your ringtones as MP3s, U will be able to access them of the miniSD card. Your ringtones can be saved as mp3s or midi files.

I had the same problem; no detection. Ran setup.exe many times. Many reboots. No detection.
What finally worked was using the "Add Hardware Wizard" to add the drivers. I had the 9800 drivers in a directory on my HD. I got the drivers from an FTP site.

Ok, here's my deal. I already have a usb card reader, why would I need a bluetooth dongle or a data cable? Shouln't that work just as well?

Posted by: evey

Never mind, my question was answered in another thread. Thanks!

This no longer works after software update to Version 2. Anyone figure a workaround on Version 2 yet?

I believe Roc a Fella and Fletch33 both got theirs to work after a reformat of the CF. See posts after #15 of this thread.
