Had my 5600 for a year now...

...and I honestly don't see another phone out there right now or in the near future that makes me feel like upgrading. The Qtek's are nice, but are they worth the trouble of switching to a new phone?

[I also don't want/need a PDA - although if the K-Jam came down in price, I'd get it!]

Really, what's out there that is going to make me change. Any REALLY great phones or features to watch out for?

Am on this forum daily, and nothing pops out at me...

I've had my 5600 for 9 months and absolutely love it. It has been the best mobile device that I've ever owned... and I've owned quite a few PPCs, PDAs, cellphones, MP3 players, etc.....
I DO need a PDA and my 5600 does the job quite nicely. I agree that there isn't anything out that is really stands head-n-shoulders above the 5600 for me.

If a comparable phone were released that was nearly identical to the 5600 but included WiFi, externally accessible SD card slot, and higher quality digicam/videocam, I would consider it.

I've has a ton of phones. I go thru them like water. Always trying the next big thing. I've reverted back to my 5600 TWICE after trying PPCs.

But now I have an SP5m....it's like the 5600 on steroids.
Beautiful screen.
Edge (at times)
WiFi when at home.
Some bug fixes.
Solid Feel.

Everything the 5600 is and more!

if you wait three days, the new 2125 will be out. same thing as the 5600 but with a 1.3 megapixel camera.

There's still no definite word on the wifi module in Cingular's version. The current thinking is:

1. Wifi module enabled for use.
2. Wifi module present, but disabled by firmware/software.
3. Wifi module not physically present.

If it's #2, then it could most likely be unlocked via changing some values in the firmware. We just won't know until someone gets their hands on it.

A year ago, I dumped VerizonWirelesss for selling me a Motorola V710 with crippled BlueTooth and switched to Cingular and a MPx220. I love the Mpx220’s form factor, the way it sits on a desk like a tiny notebook computer… but as we in this forum are all to aware, life with an MPx220 can be disappointing. After XBMing the MPx220 4 times and sharing our experiences about the MPx220 and SMT5600 on this forum, I decided to stop fighting and switched.

At first, I was very concerned that I wouldn’t like the candybar design with it ever present LCD screen just crying scratch me. Keeping the SMT5600 in its very nice case has been the solution for that issue for me.

Bottom line is I’m so happy with the functionality and value of the SMT5600 that I will update to the imate SP5 as soon as those reporting on it in this forum have given it the 2 thumbs up.

For me, EDGE, better display, WM5, better camera and Wi-Fi are all reasons for upgrading.

Foot note regarding V710 – recently I received a notice that I’m part of a class action lawsuit and might some day receive some compensation from VerizonWireless.

All those features would be nice, and I'd also like to add a FM transmitter to that list. I know some phones are being built with them now, so you can transmit your music right to a radio frequency and listen from your car or home stereo without cables. Great idea.

That IS a great idea! Which cell(s) phone already has that?

After playing around with a SP5, I'm not going to upgrade from my SMT. There are too few improvements, and a few downsides, that convinced me to hold on for now. I'm going to wait around until a handset comes out that has high-speed data; EDGE just doesn't seem all that much more great than GPRS.

I was weary of upgrading for the exact same reason (not as revolutionary an upgrade)! Thanks for your opinion - I feel better now.

Anyone have any dust issues with the SPM/SPM5?

if you are interested, javoedge has a screenprotector specifically for the SMT5600 and it works GREAT...during the stint that I had the SMT, I used these and loved them...not that I kept the phone in my pocket, I used the case too, but this screen protector gives you another layer of protection from scratches and stuff...

Thanks for the javaoedge info hylton, I didn't know about them. They don't carry a JAVOScreen for the SMT5600 or the like. Which did you use? I just inspected my Screen and it is starting to show some wear and tear. So, I think I'll give a screen protected a try given your recommendation.

Yea, they have one just for the SMT...but it's under the rest of the audiovox PDA category items...also, warning, they are kinda pricey and require the hands of a surgeon to apply straight, I went thru a 3 pack before I got one on straight and w/o any dust under it, but once it was on, I had that one on for 6 months or more...it worked great, even took a bit of the gloss out of the screen and made it much nicer to view outside.

i have had a ridiculous amount of phones... and still no other phone comes close to my SMT 5600... though the new 2125 looks attractive there is few improvments.... if they had a flash with that 1.3 megapixel camera.
but anyways... i have my mp3, pda, organizer, phone and instant messegner in a beautiful candybar device..... i first considered the MPX220 but the thing that kept me back was the ring tone issue they had.
i have a nokia 6682 and a SE W600, but still with out my SMT 5600 i feel weird... so i think ill just stick to this phone for the most part.

I have also been using the SMT5600 for about a year and love it (minus the dust issue). This is the longest *single* phone that I have ever used (used the MPx200 longer but went through 5 of em). I strongly considered upgrading to the SP5(m), but with rules of my current job (military) and phones on deployment (can't take em), I figured that I would upgrade to the Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard) once it is released. I figure that there will be less questions asked from people if they see me using a PPC (without SIM of course) rather than something that looks like a phone (Duh!) SIM or not. Regardless I will need something with WiFi in a compact form factor so I will be able to leech on hotspots while in port so I can email, IM, etc... I am still intrigued by the SP5m though, too bad it looks totally what it is, a phone...

can ya fill me in on this DUST issue?!

ive had mine now for about 2 months and i LOVE it.
i watch movies on it at work when on lunch. show it off heh. no one has seen anything LIKE IT. around here, the only comparable phone i see used by others is the blackberry, or a sprint treo.

i recall reading a walk-through that included inserting a few small strips of thin 3M double-sided tape around the edges of the LCD screen from the inside?!

is that what you are referring to?
