What is the function of Hotsync?

I hear a lot of people talking about it, but I have no clue what it does. Can someone fill me in?

It'll allow you to (Hot)Sync your Info from the Palm Desktop software to your Treo bi-laterally so you have a back-up of info...

yes, a treo 650... but i'm new to it and it's my first palm device, so i'm not fermiliar with a lot of the functions.
