The HTC/Cingular 2125 Smartphone thread (please read before starting add. threads)

I don't know if it a specific phone problem, but I think if you look into it you may find that Cingular went with a cheaper HTC model that has a different chip/processor configuration. That being the case it's cheaper to buy but may not be able to handle complex data processing.

Just a thought.

Posted by: Newbie30642

What is the best method for searching contacts on the 2125? My old Nokia was pretty straightforward, but I don't seem to have this one (2125) figured out as yet.

i feel you may be on to something. the smt5600 seemed less prone to freeze-up and/or lag. however, i didn't use an email "push"... i got sms notification then synced email. i was cing-blue but office_online is going bye-bye so was forced to go cing-orange to use expressmail. i first loaded xpressmail on the audiovox as an mmode account. cws said it would work but it was very problematic. hence the migration and upgrade to 2125.

my post history to this thread documents the poor reliability i'm experiencing as a multi-tasker. i still wonder if it's just me??? i might have to go with a pda. i really liked using the typhoon. i am (was?) a smartphone guy. this cingular crunched-keyed, quasimoto-deformed faraday variant is a compromise on some levels that the audiovox was not. i tweaked and customized the 5600 and it rarely crashed during concurrent apps/processes.

i sound like a "hater". i'm not. i want a powerful wm5 smartphone that can multi-process phone-function along with data-connectivity and running apps. i also think the bluetooth radio adds more processing weight on the chipset and (lack of) onboard memory which drops the os into quicksand!

on another note: i opine that wifi was gutted for these two economic reasons...
1. to run-up data plan sales and/or charges, and
2. allow a less beefy system board that keeps sale-price down so the masses afford the phone

good news here could be that ms mobile gains market and acceptance. that's good for us all. bad news is that this phone may blow for business power-users wanting a phone-form-factor communication (tele/sms/email/ie) device instead of a pda brick.

Posted by: CA

IMO the 2125 is a compromise. I'm betting it's a good one for 95% of it's users. Last week I wrote about a girl who cuts hair of all things and she loves it. It's like she moved her whole business life into it. And some monkey business.

The reason I mentioned her is because I showed her the 8125 on her phone and she laughed and asked me where she was supposed to put it.

I've had the same problem. I don't use expressmail but it occurs when I want to surf after a period of time when I haven't. I wonder if using Task Manager to end the PIE would help.

Usually I don't end PIE. But now I will start and see if it helps.

Well I just took the plunge and ordered a 2125 off the Cingular Premier Website. Price was $117 before tax, and I ordered it with a $59.99 voice plan and Unlimited Media Plan for $19.99.

This is probably the best deal/value for this type of phone. Only thing I don't like is the 2 year extension, I've never signed up for a two year contract before, but I've been a Cingular customer for 6+ years now so it's unlikely I'll switch out either. The order comes with 2nd day shipping so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will be here on Tuesday!

Have you had issues with general hanging and sluggishness?

What bluetooth keybards are you using?

yeah baby, this thing can move like an old lady wearing snow shoes in a mud bog. that's when doing anything other than performing a single task that doesn't get interupted by a call, a sms, an email or any bluetooth or beam...

Hi, I am thinking of getting this phone. I had a PDA/Phone in mind but there is nothing out there that I really like and its looking like eternity for the 8125 to be released.

My big thing is having access to the internet but I was wondering if T9 predictive text works when typing info in websites like Google, Yahoo, Ameritrade etc etc?

If I had to multitap I think I would go nuts.

Is cingular trying to screw me?

I got the cingular 2125... two weeks ago the medianet homepage stopped working on all my phones and internet access is random, sometimes it's great sometimes it's slow and sometimes it just doesn't work. I've called a cpl times now complaining about it. There is supposidly no outages in my area, and haven't been at all since mid december. The first time I called about it they tried telling me that since it's a smartphone the internet will only work with the data plan. I said that is ******** but go ahead and try anyways. Sure enough they switched me over and still no go on five of my phones. So they switched me back to medianet. Last week they sent me a text messaging asking if service worked. I said No, it doesn't work. I got another text message saying my case was closed cause they couldn't get a hold of me. Yeah, they couldn't get a hold of me cause for some damn reason they were calling my GFs cell instead of mine even though I explicitly told them to call mine as primary and I'd call them back on a nearby phone.

So I call them today to let them know that it's still not working on any of my phones. They just kept telling me that medianet doesn't work on the cingular 2125 and I'd have to change to the unlimited data plan for $40 a month. Just totally ignoring the fact that it doesn't work on ANY of my phones.

Sorry about the ranting, but to the point... has anyone had this problem? My data usage was actually higher with my SE W600i cause I used it to watch mobitv, so I don't think that's an issue and I've never hooked any of my laptops to any cellphones for internet access. And if medianet doesn't work with the cingular 2125 why do they sell it as a package deal to get the $100 rebate? Is cingular just trying to screw me?

Posted by: hobbs

Does anyone know if websites like wirefly.com or letstalk.com will have 2125 since it's cingular branded phone? I would like to wait for their free after rebate deals.

Posted by: marleyfan

I have cleared all my PIE files, All Extra Programs, and moved all my media files to my 1 gig mini sd card. And i am still getting the Alert "Your phone is running low on free storage space. Delete old or unused items to create more space." This has to be a result of the SMS messages on my phone. There are many messages in there that i need and can not delete.... Is there a way to move the current messages on my phone to the mini sd card(preffered), or at the very least my computer? And then have all new messages stored on my mini sd card??

Has anyone else experienced sporadic speaker buzzing when the 2125 is placed within a foot or two of either the phone or the computer? If I rest mine within range of either I get morse code sounding buzzez either thru the phone handset when I am using it or thru the computer speakers I have nearby. My other cell phones did not promote such noises. It seems to be related to when the phone makes certain data communications, but I have not verified it. If my phone is the only one doing this, then maybe I have a bad radio chip.

Thanks.

The only difference between medianet and PDA plan is billing (price). Both BILLING plans allow unlimited access to Internet but they do not have anything to do with or GPRS/EDGE availability....

My bet is either your GPRS settings are wrong ot you have a defective phone...

Most of my GSM phones seem to do this when in close proximity to a speaker, but only when they are checking towers. It does not occur continuously and is not a 2125 thing.

Yeah I can tell when I am going to get a call. The speakers buzz a couple of seconds before the phone rings.

It will only do it when the phone is doing one of three things: 1)Searching for a signal, 2)while in a call, or 3)when transferring GPRS/EDGE data. It's just something that GSM/GPRS/EDGE phones do. I'm not sure if it only does it in the 850mhz band, or in the 1900mhz as well. It does it through the stereo on my 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix, so I can tell about a second before I get a call, and every 15 minutes when the MPx220 checks my e-mail. lol

wirefly.com at least, it's an Inphonic company they also do RadioShack's online.

Thanks for the replies about the buzzing. This is my second gsm phone. I also have [had until the recall] a Sony Ericsson z520a and it did not cause any buzzing.

Anyone notice on the premier website the price of the 2125 is back up to 269.99 again?

Cheaper than what model?

It sounds like you think you know the answer. So then, what are you talking about?

to me... none! imo: the wifi feature has more of a high "wow gadget" value than anything else.

as for me and smartphones, i use pocket internet explorer for baby stuff like web-based email, wap portal info services like yahoo-msn-medianet-google. you know? kinda like a newspaper/mag. for downtime mind-food like weather, sportsnews, headline news etc.

if i lived in and didn't travel out of a 100% wifi city, then i wouldn't pay for unlimited data and it would save money. also in that case, maybe there would be a hack/work-around that might get me low-cost web-calling. that would be sweet.

today, xpressmail stopped pushing as expected. it doesn't go for more than a few days requiring some effort to get it working. this morning, i needed cingular. that is 3-times in a month. just to keep my heart pumpin and supplant need for caffine... near the end of thier resetting me on the network (whatever) and reconfiguring my xpressmail account (alrighty then), my 2125 happily leaves edge and goes to gprs and drops the call. by-the-way, i watched this happen with full-bar rf. i'm glad that we were near the end of our 45-minute trouble-shoot and was already told that i would need to reboot the device for the fix to take.

so, after cursing i rebooted the phone (this is required often for many bogs and i'm very adept at pulling that unfriendly power button forward and in with the tip of my fingernail) and it started and stayed stuck in flight mode. over joyed with the relaibilty of all that is my smartphone, i pull over to a pay phone (the last time i used one of those it had a bell logo in the dial) to call my friends at the help"less" desk at cws. they kindly called me at the pay phone and worked thier voodoo so i'm ok again for now.

please forgive me but you are my therapy

Posted by: JMBrown

I don't know why you have all these issues. I have this phone and dont really have many problems at all. Though, I don't even waste my time with xpressmail. I just set my POP3 account (gmail) to check every 15 minutes. I know I won't have any incoming e-mails so urgent that I can't wait 14 minutes to receive.

To try to answer your question I just wanted to point out now that the carriers(Cingular and Verizon) are self Branding by using a ODM instead of an OEM were going to see many similar devices that use different solutions.

The term dual processor is becoming hot in the industry because it allows a manufacturer to have the phone radio use one processor and the computer to use another. It gives them faster processing and when just using the phone gives you more battery reserve.

It also gives their customer, the carrier, the ability to bring a device to market of their own design. If a carrier chooses to save money by under powering a device they can. This will not affect most users because they simply are not power users. They make calls, keep a calendar etc. not call use GPS and CAD rendering at the same time. This is going to create confusion because of the way we buy these devices because you don't get to load your cup of tee till it's out the door.

The law provides a remorse period for phones and service and it's that fact that going to be painful to the carrier.

Just my opinion.

You must subscribe to the Yahoo! Mail Plus service for POP access through your email client.
http://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com/
it's 19.99 a year

The 2125 has SBC Yahoo Mail settings already installed in it, you should be able do this without having to upgrade if you have a DSL or Dial account.

i use Gmail on my phone. make sure you in to your Gmail account and activate pop3 though.

I've tried both and I think the web based version of gmail is SO much better than the pop3 version....

Just point your phone's browser to....

and sign in... works GREAT....

This phone has a "wake up when data connection is needed" problem haha. If the phone does not use the Data Connection for a while it will stop working, I have to cycle the phone in and out of flight mode to get it to work again. However I fixed this problem simply by making my phone sync every 5 minutes with the exchange server.

Doesn't that kill your battery? Good idea though I'll make a note.

Besides upping the earpiece volume, how can I up the system volume for this phone? I find it too low.

Thanks in advance, much appreciated.

man I really wish this thread had a "search-within" function. I just got my 2125 phone less than 24 hours ago. BIG upgrade from a friggin tdma Nokia 2260. Took about 2 hours to get the internet working. Problem now is activesync. The pc conects fine to my dell axim x3i (no bluetooth), but when I connect the 2125, the desktop just says "connecting" forever. All my contacts are waiting for this phone and my nokia has no service! If I devote much more time to the phone or internet, I will get in trouble witht he GF!!!
So can you please, please, please help me get my sync on?

Posted by: TheUnforgiven83

Well I finally got the 2125 yesterday, after almost a month of waiting, but had to buy it at cost, which was $350. So far, the phone has been worth every penny. A couple questions, though: 1) I wonder if I could actually use the $100 mail-in-rebate, I'm about 14 months through a 2 year contract, using a $45 a month plan, with Unlimited Media Net. The form says a Data plan is required, but it's not necessary for this phone. So technically I do qualify for the rebate, but can I still use it? 2)Has anyone gotten a "Clear" screen protector from Boxwave yet? I messed up and ordered the "Anti-Glare" and it fits perfectly, but you can't even see through the thing!

Do you have ActiveSync 4.0 or 4.1 installed? I'd suggest getting 4.1. Also, I recalled there were some problems with ActiveSync on systems that have VPN software installed. Search on the MS Smartphone forum for the details. I also remember seeing a thread discussing solutions to ActiveSync problems in Cingular's own customer forums.

I've ordered the crystal clear protector for my 5600 back in the day. It is GREAT but the reflection was pretty extensive. I purchased some HP screen protectors that I cut to fit. I can get 2 out of each sheet. So I have 40 for 19.00. They are clear but don't make huge obstructive reflections.

Omega 2k8 bought from Boxwave. He may have some input as well.

You can get the rebate for the 19.99 MediaNet. You may have to push for it because they don't know that this handset isn't a PDA and does not require the PDA plan. Plus they consider MediaNet a feature and not a plan. Poor things. The only difference between the PDA plan and MediaNEt is the cost and they are hoping that we don't notice.

Anyone getting slow Edge speeds with this phone? I average 10kb/sec which is sloooow. I want to stream my XM radio to it but it keeps dropping off and buffering because of the slow speed.

How bad is the reflection on the Boxwave Crystal Clear? I can stand a bit after having the MPx220 for awhile. Can you still read the screen out in the sunlight? Anything has got to be better than the Anti-Glare I bought. I love the fit, and love the thick material that it's made from, but you can't even see through it, the screen cover that's on the phone when it's new is clearer than that. I really don't want to cut screen protectors, if I can help it.

So the rebate should still work, even after buying the phone outright, with no contract? That'd make the phone have a decent price then.

Thanks for all of the help and info.

When I first got my phone the Edge speeds were a little flakey, but they've been rock solid for the past few weeks. I stream Sirius to my phone on a regular basis at 30kbps with no problem at all.

The rebate is in this thread some where. Read the fine print. But I've posted on 2 boards and I've gotten the same information about MediaNet being o.k.

Yes, the boxwave screenprotection material is nice. The reflection for me was pretty significant to me. Enough for me to take it off and find another option. IT is interesting to note that the Anti-Glare doesn't work well with the QVGA. Saves me some $$$. I also didn't like the way the material curved up around the edges of the screen. The screen is slightly curved in the middle so since the material isn't as pliable it doesn't stick on the edges as well

Posted by: Newbie30642

I copied my phone list from my old Nokia onto the SIM for the 2125. How can I copy from the SIM onto the phone so that the contacts will sync? New at this, and have simple questions, so flaming isn't necessary. Thanks!

Unless there was some neigh invisible layer protecting the front part, then it's very unclear on the 2125. The screen fits perfectly and lays very flat on mine, it was rather lift the edge up when I tried to remove it. I wonder if Omega has gotten his yet, and if it's worth it, I'll order that, and have it shipped on two day or something.

And as for the rebate, I may call CS and see if it's okay. Maybe I'll get a good one, lol.

Thanks again!

didn't work. Thanks, though.

even tried re-install and uninstall of activesync 4.1, and no good. Installed onto my laptop and tried to sync and it worked fine. Must be some kind of conflict on the desktop running MCE. I will worry about it later. I've got my contacts onto the 2125 and I've already spent 2 hours today fiddling around with this phone. It's supposed to make me more efficient, not waste all my time.

Thanks for your help.

Hey I was looking at the 2125 in the store today and I was really turned off by the joystick. Is it naturally very loose or was the one in the store just beat to hell (already?)?

I wonder if Omega has gotten his yet, and if it's worth it, I'll order that, and have it shipped on two day or something.

And as for the rebate, I may call CS and see if it's okay. Maybe I'll get a good one, lol.

Thanks again!

I've gotten mine, and I messed it up haha. Got another one and its working ok for now. Still think its better without it but it will do.

I'm sure the display model is jacked up. I love the joystick. It is WAY better than the whatever it was on the 5600.

I think it was just beat to hell, the joystick has a good response, not too hard, not too loose,
WAY WAY WAY much better than that crap HTC put on the SMT5600.

Any stores in DFW have them in stock? I've called every corporate store in Tarrant country and have gotten everything from “What the heck is that?” to “It’s a web-only” to “We had two but had to send them back”

Posted by: turtle2472

I ordered mine over the phone Tuesday night and it got here today with standard shipping. It's charging now for the first time.

I haven't done a search on the forum yet, but am looking forward to being able to mod this thing much like my v710 for my Verizon account.

When I go to a store asking for the phone, I take a printout of the Details page from the website so at least they can see in the picture what phone I'm talking about - and to prove them I'm not crazy asking for a phone with no brand other than Cingular on it.

Posted by: JeffreyCentex

All of the corporate stores save one in San Antonio have them (and many of them). The store rep said they arrived on Tuesday. So YMMV...

i like it better than the scroll bar thingy on my 5600. i'm on second 2125 and both feel tight and precise. it is a love it or hate thing i guess.

one of my phone's problem: i sent my first 2125 back because cs said it had defective radio since it was going into flight mode instead of switching to/from edge/gprs. this new one was doing it off-and-on and finally stayed hung in flight-mode last night. after reaching level-3 tech-support, they determined the device's sim was probably one from the first 3g batch which had a high percentage of "bad" chips.

lucky for me that they had previously sent an unrapped sim along with the replacement 2125... so they registered/activated it over phone... i put it in and it worked right from start-up and has now for 24-hours. we will see if it goes on the flight mode fritz anymore

If you have firewall software on the PC, try disabling it as a test. If this solves the problem, there are some workarounds I saw earlier by searching the internet.

Good question. I found that searching for +cingular +2125 helps, but a Search-withina-thread function would just be awesome- it would save time for the users, and save resources for the forum. I don't know why administration has not enabled it.

Thanks. Yeah, I use sygate, and I tried both setting it to "Allow All" and Disabling it. But I got it going on my lappy, and my HTPC is due for a wipe/reinstall of MCE anyways. Thanks, though.

Sounds OK except that spec-wise, it looks like the Faraday and Tornado appear practically identical except for WiFi, buttons and stuff like that. Key issue in my mind FWIW: both use Processor 200MHz TI OMAP 850 + TI E-Syren. Now if the wireless provider pulled some software dumbing down, that would be another story. Not sure how one would figure that out without a performance benchmarking app or something.

OK then. Guess I was looking for an answer like the 2125 uses processor/chipset W/X and the SP5m uses processor/chipset Y/Z, but whatever. Thanks for explaining.

Keep in mind that Cingular didn't cripple the Faraday, not HTC made a WiFi-less version of the Tornado just per Cingular's request. The same phone HTC Faraday (WiFi-less Tornado) that Cingular has is being sold by Orange in Europe. It's the exact same phone without WiFi, the only exception being that it doesn't have the hump since GSM coverage in Europe doesn't really need signal boosters. HTC made a smart move by providing both WiFi and no-WiFi models so they could cash on both groups of resellers: those who want WiFi and those who don't.

The joy stick is the only thing I don't like about the phone. For me, it is difficult to navigate through menus on the phone, especially moving sideways, and thru links on a web page. Too many false clicks for me. Makes it harder for me to operate with one hand. I find I have to hold the phone with my other hand in order to make sure I am moving the cursor where I want it.

I pulled out my SMT 5600 the other day and the directional pad on that was far easier to use, especially for lateral scrolling. Maybe I will get better at it as time goes on.

Cool thats great!

So, how soon after you get new phones do the accessories for them come in? I'm really wanting a clear covering case for this thing, not a holder or a plastic sheet for the screen.

thanks!

Well the whole thing is getting deeper. With all these variants going to different carriers and different countries a new term is in the horizon. Crippled/disabled/omitted by carrier/OEM/ODM.

And there's the hump! Now that it's clear it does help reception who in their right mind is going to make/buy a phone without?

It's on the right side of the hump, opposite from where the Power button is located. It's hidden but it's there.

Bad News, the left soft key on my phone has decided it no longer wishes to function. I'm currently on hold with Cingular trying to get this phone replaced. It's under 30 days old and the phone is still in perfect condition, so I don't expect any issues replacing it. I'll let you all know what happens.

Aren't you glad you didn't get a little earlier Lockline would have sent you another SMT5600 to replace it?

I use a bluespoon ax2 with a 2125 and they have worked great together so far.

Update on my phantom flight-mode issue. The last time the 2125 went into self imposed flight-mode it stayed stuck there and needed level-3 tech support to assume it was not a radio issue, not a network issue, not a firmware issue but maybe a sim issue. So they had me read the 64k smartcard chip number and confirm if it had a 3g on back. They said it may be “bad” since early release sim’s have “problems”. I had another 64k smartcard with a 3g on back that came with the replacement 2125 sent because the first one was doing this same flight-mode thingy. The registered and activated it and it hasn’t bugged in 2-days. We’ll see!

It still drops calls when switching to/from edge/gprs regardless of single strength.

Since last tech support on expressmail push bug (5-days ago), the push feature has not gone completely out-of-service. It continues to require at least daily reset though. Symptom: Sync log shows sync attempted but email on the Seven server does not come through to phone. Fix: Resend user password through xpressmail phone client and do manual sync and the push works for until a long period of no mail.

This morning the phone decided that I had no mini_sd installed. Panic set it that chip with all my photos, music and programs had been fried. This chip has served the smt5600 for over 18-months and the 2125 #1 and now 2125 #2 over these painful and unreliable s5-weeks. Removed card and replaced it and all seems fine and no data lost or corrupted (I think). Everything is always backed-up anyway.

There is no way for neither 5600 or 2125 to gold a GPRS session and voice call in the same time. This feature is called GPRS class 10 device.

Why do you use thi junk anyway? Why do not make OE login and check for email every 15-30 minutes instead?

duchski is it not called a class A device that can do voice and data at the same time? I thought numbers were referring to speed/slots and whatnot?

Has anyone tried a universal infrared keyboard with the 2125? They tend to be a bit cheaper than portable bluetooth keyboards and I could keep my headset connected while I am typing. I figure it is a viable option since the infrared port in on top of the phone.

Posted by: JiveDonkey

Anywhere to get the phone cheaper than $199 (after $100 rebate) for a customer upgrade? Thats the web price at the moment.

Posted by: LkyOldSun

This phone sucks. I get poor reception compared to my crappy TDMA! internet pages load slower on my phone than my laptop on dialup, and 1/2 the time the internet doesn't work anyways. about 10% of the calls I make do not go through, and the phone rings only twice before it sends the caller to VM- not enough time for me to pickup. I heard there's an update, and if it doesn't fix my problems, I'm done with cingular and their ****.

Posted by: deberha2

I tried to download a few home screens and not one of them worked 100% because of plugins I didn't have or simply not being compatible with this phone, so I made my own. Does anyone know how to make the start menu into a text list or something that will allow more than 9 items on the screen at once? I tried to upload a pic of my screen, but I can't get the file size small enough to upload. Suggestions?

Posted by: CeluGeek

Supposedly, the 2125 arrived yesterday to my nearest corp store. They'd enter them into their systems today and I should be able to buy one tomorrow. What a shame; a month and a half of extended wait.

Posted by: turtle2472

Funny, I was in my local store getting my 2125 fixed today and the reps didn't even know what it was or how to use it! My SIM chip died and had to be replaced. They enjoyed getting a "preview" of it though.

They did have the new Moto in hand though, it was nice. Screen sucks compared to this one though.

Hey everyone buying one of these - here's a tip. Get two and put the second on ebay - they are going for $445.00 !!! Finally got my 2125 to tether to my tablet via bluetooth, and it even syncs outlook via usb at the same time

My only complaint so far it the Ignore softkey when the phone rings.

I keep the 2125 in the holder it came with on my belt. When the phone rings, I take it out of the holder. In the process at least 50% of the time the Ignore button is pressed and it goes right to voicemail. It doesnt matter how carefully I attempt to take it out, it still gets pressed.

Is there any way to disable that Ignore button?

And the other 50% of the time I accidentally hit the 'Answer' softkey and it automatically answeres the call! It would be great if you had to do something simple like hit the 'answer call' key twice or something...

also... if you have disabled "answer using any key" and even have the phone keypad locked, the call will be answered if the joystick is moved in any direction when removing from holster. poo ka!!!

So, I just received a brand new 2125 handset. As I reported earlier, the start button on my first 2125 quit functioning, and Cingular promptly replaced my headset for me. I must say, this is quite rare, but I am very pleased with Cingular Wireless right now.

Late first impressions:

From the things that have bothered most people, the only thing that has bothered me so far is the Power button. You really need to press it with your fingernail, not the finger itself. Luckily, I only turn off my phone during weekend nights.

The screen looks really nice, except outdoors where it is just as bad as in the SMT5600. Reception is indeed better than the SMT5600 and the hump doesn't bother me at all. Keypad is well lit and it really isn't more cramped than on the SMT5600. Synchronization went flawlessly with ActiveSync 4.1 which I already had installed. I haven't opened the CD that came with the phone. The joystick does take some practice but I think I can handle it.

What has bothered me the most so far, is that while I modified the registry to turn off the Grid on the Start menu, everytime you open a Start menu folder, such as games, the grid comes back after you reboot the phone.

I've encountered a odd issue on my 2125(just my dang luck). It's done it twice, one time after leaving the phone's keypad locked over night, and the other after leaving it locked and untouched for about 2-3 hours, and when I try to unlock the phone, I get this odd message, that says something like: "Cannot find the 'MSSHOME" application." and it is just froze on that screen, until I pull the battery out and put it back.

It seems I just went from one phone with annoying hardware problems to one with good hardware, and annoying software problems. Yare, yare.

I love the phone. I love what it can do.

But...

First, it is sluggish. Second, memory seems to be an issue. Third, I'm always concerned if the memory on the device is full. I never had that concern with my 5600.

Other than that I consider it a pretty solid device.

BTW!!!! I want that A2DP profile. It seems to me that Cingular must release a rom update for the owners of this device. I can't believe they released the 2125 without it.

i agree with all you said. i think smartphones are a great tool for the right people. i thought the 5600 was better for its time than this is. cramming in the qvga and squishing keypad is a bit lame. sluggish all around. cool gadget. good radio reception. decent battery life. great display. poor on-board memory and processing power. terrible reliability floating between edge and non-edge towers. needs rom update with bug fixes. see my prior posts if you want a list.

Posted by: TheGSRGuy

Cingular's site says it comes with a 512MB MiniSD card. Is this true?

Any outstanding quirks/flaws? Reliability? For the price, this seems like a very solid phone.

I ask because I'm about to order it via Cingular Premier with the unlimited MediaNET plan. Also going to grab a Plantronics BT headset since I get a discount on it.

I agree for the most part with xultar's post. But I don't blame the phone; I blame the OS. I'd put a WM2003 SE ROM into this phone if I could. WM5 is sluggish and the memory allocation is awful - too much for program execution and too little for program and data file storage.

As for the A2DP profile, we can just hope that Cingular releases it when it releases the Messaging and Security Pack they promised for the first half of 2006.

I AM glad Cingular didn't wait for the AKU2 testing to be completed to release this phone, else we'd still be waiting for it. Cingular and HTC appear to be willing to release updates for the 2125, unlike Audiovox who never, ever gave us a ROM update to fix bugs of the SMT5600, like not being able to use voice dialing or last number redial through Bluetooth with the phone's keypad locked.

Is this slowness/lag supposed to be fixed in subsequent firmwares/OS updates?

Sorry for the 20 questions, but this will be my first smartphone.

you can call cingular and have them extend your ring up to 30 seconds, but anything past 25 seconds of ringing, you get charged a minute. mine is set at 25 seconds. there is also, i believe, a way you can program it yourself without calling cingular, but i don't know the code. anyway, it takes em 2 seconds to do it if you get lucky and get a cs rep that's not braindead.

you might want to make sure that your earpiece volume is all the way up. earlier on it happened to me and i wondered where the volume went, then i realized i needed to kick up the earpiece volume (via the side buttons)

AHHH! It did it again. I've noticed that it does it when the phone is left on for long periods of time(overnight) while being idle(not using the phone, just letting it sit, without getting any calls or messages). So, I tried using the only program that worked, XBar, to end all current tasks and I get the message, "Cannot execute the program because it is not digitally signed." I installed the Application Unlocker so I dunno what's wrong.

I did notice it happen with my phone today as well. I ended up pulling the battery. I had it plugged in on my night stand with the key lock on. Maybe it's just as groggy in the morning as I am!

I always thought it was common knowledge that power cycling a GSM phone every 24 hours minimizes the probability of service/phone quirks? I know that if I power cycle my V400 every 24 hours I never get any glitches or "can't find network" errors.

Mine is groggy after a few hours in keylock as well. I've had to pull the battery quite often.

My 2125 is on 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, and it is on keylock for any of those hours I am not on a call (or checking e-mail). I leave it on and keylocked while charging it at night.

Since the first day, I have only had to pull the battery once or twice, and that was due to a freeze trying to un-keylock it.

FWIW - I usually do a preventative reboot every 3 or 4 days. Also, in my area, I have only noticed a change from EDGE to GPRS one time. The signal covers us pretty well here.

What Home Screen you are using? I use the Windows Simple home screen and I left my phone powered on with the keypad locked overnight, and I didn't have this problem. I can still use the xBar 3 application too.

Wireless Home Screen. But it's not just the home screen that doesn't work. It's Contacts, PIE, Camera, Quicklist, and pretty much everything else.

I usually powercycle everyday, the most I've went is about two days. Maybe I should pull the battery when I powercycle it? I'm in a solid EDGE area(thanks to the Smoothtalker and a Moto VXXX adapter ). I've never even seen the GPRS icon on the 2125.

I learned a long time ago about GSM power cycling with my first GSM phone the horrid V180, which if you didn't powercycle about every 6 hours the thing would just crash anytime you tried to do about anything on it. I crashed that phone almost everytime I tried to use AIM on it. lol

hi, I'm a current verizon user thinking of switching to cingular just for the smartphone. Also, cause the razr v3c had echo problems(I could hear myself speak) so I returned it. The verizon rep at the store said that every v3c has that feature and its not a defect. Also, verizon smartphones are too bulky.

I've gone through most of the 2125 threads and am aware of the general problems like the hard to reach power button and no wifi. But it seems to have all of the features I'm interested in like wm5, bluetooth, sdcard, small form factor. Just have a couple of questions b4 I head to the cingular retail store- how much max memory is supported on the sd card? Can I get the $100 MIR without the internet plan? The cingular website does not mention that the unlimited internet is required to qualify for the rebate.

Wow, the rep at VZW called echoing a "Feature". HAHA! --points up to his signature-- I'll have to add that one to it!

I've been using a Sandisk 1GB MiniSD since the day I bought the 2125 without a hitch. I store programs(you can even run them from the card), mp3 and wma music, and avi Videos on the card as well. I've heard that a 2gb will work, but I don't know about that for sure. As for the rebate, you should be able to get it with the Unlimited Media Net Feature($19.99 a month) since this is a phone and not a PDA. (I submitted my rebate form after buying the phone outright, keeping my current plan and Unlimited Media Net. I hope they will accept it.) I highly recommend Unlimited Media Net since the 2125 has 120-200k EDGE, and will eat through 50mb+ of data in no time.

OK I've come to realise that there will not be any rom updates to the 2125 and we will not get the A2DP profile.

boo hoo

Why do you say that? That's not what Cingular implies in their press release for the 2125.

Forgive my ignorance, but how does this effect me? Do I need a ROM update?

Yeah, it takes a pretty decent picture. A lot better than the MPx220.

when I'm in a call, changing the earpiece volume level doesn't work. It shows that it changes on the screen (full black bar for max to white bar for min), but the actual volume level doesn't change. Has anyone else experienced this?

I believe HTC or Qtek announced that a ROM update will be released for Qtek8310 which would add A2DP bluetooth profile (stereo headset support), among othere things.
So people are hoping that the 2125 would get a simillar update to add A2DP.

Thanks for the clarification on that.

belgian85 - Have you adjusted the volume on the headset? It really should be loud enough for you on max. If it isn't you might look into the hearing impaired devices. (I don't mean that as a cut down or anything.)

Edit: belgian85 - I just reread your post, oops. Anyway I haven't seen that one yet. Does it happen all the time or only occasionally?

It happens almost all the time. It's really annoying because it's not possible to turn the volume down when someone's talking loud on the phone.

Hmmmm, i currently have the 5mb ($9.99 plan). Picked up the 2125 w/o a contract tonight at the cinguar store (he took down my #). Logged in, and now i don't see an option for the $19.99 unlimited MediaNet. (it was there 2 weeks ago when i added the $9.99 plan).

Do i have to call to get it added on? (and the 2125 qualifies for the $19.99 plan, correct?)

You should be able to do it instore, but if not you can call CS, and get it added. CS can do pretty much anything, even odd requests like I had. Make sure they don't try to put you on PDA/Data Connect which is the overpriced option for PDA Phones or Notebook Cards respectively.

Smartphones(other than Treos, which are just strange, because most people call them a PDA, but Treo calls them Smartphones.) are considered as normal phones as far as plans and features go. And yes, it's supposed to be $19.99 a month for the Unlimited Media Net Feature.
