Can someone please explain what's so cool about the Audiovox 5600??

Got it for the $30 refurb, been wanting to delve into Windows Smartphone a little without a huge entry fee. I've had the phone for a few hours now, and aside from not being able to get ActiveSync (I hated this software with my old HP Jornada) to sync via bluetooth, I can't find any websites with themes or anything on them. Am I doomed to suffer through the windows background/theme?! Are there any programs worth installing, and how come it doesn't have word/excel/powerpoint on there?? Can someone please explain the point in keeping this phone??/

EDIT - and where the F*** is the AOL chat program?!?

for starters try this is has a bunch of free apps and homes screens http://www.airfagev.com/downloads.asp?cat=Applications this one to but you have to register its free http://www.modaco.com/index.php?act=downloads
download tcmp for watching dvds
and you can use orb to stream audio to phone

Go to smartphone.net or handango. tons of apps available. I recommend the following:

TCPMP- excellent free media player. will play just about anything
Mobipocket- ebook reader
Audible player- audiobook player
Opera-nice web browser
Agile Messenger- decent MSN/Yahoo/AOL IM client
Profimail- excellent email client
ClearVue Suite- excel, word, powerpoint, pdf viewer
Smartphone Notes-syncs Outlook notes
Smartphone Find- global search app

For homescreens, etc do a search. There are tons out there (some decent ones on Modaco.com) The homescreen is far more customizable than say S60. Not only can you manipulate the colors and images, but the way the info is diplayed, etc. Microsoft has a free theme maker available, and Ruttensoft had a better one for some $. I was a hardcore S60 user, but once I found a stable, reliable WM phone (5600) I've never looked back. Better calendar, better contacts app, etc. My only complaint with the 5600 was the lack of EDGE but there are new WM phones hitting the market that take care of that. For $40, you cannot beat the 5600 though.

With the new version of ActiveSYNC (4.0) you can sync via Bluetooth.

You said cool, right?

Beta Player - to play ripped DiVx movies on your phone.

xtremexm - to stream xm satellite radio to your phone. This does require an XM subscription.

XM on my cell phone?? I knew there was a reason I came to Cingular. I can't wait for my 5600 to show up tomorrow.

You can always take a picture and use it as a wallpaper.

"and where the F*** is the AOL chat program?!?"

try this

Lol. Yeah I found Agile today. Kinda makes me feel at home again. I have some other things that I can't figure out:

1. Ringtones - I put some midi's in the "sounds" folder, but can't get them to show up as ringtones? Anyone?

2. Changing the background pic - I haven't found any themes that I really liked (I found one on Modaco, but when I tried to install it, it wasn't signed so the phone wouldn't do it.) but I have some background pictures I'd like to use. How do I get those from my photo album to the background list??

3. Is Pocket Explorer just a WAP browser??

4. Any free streaming music app?? I'm trying desperately to like this phone, and it's growing on me. I like some things, but abhor others.

what i liked about it when i had it was that I was able to sync my work calendar and contacts with it. Functionality. Decent speakerphone, cool apps like to check the weather and stuff on it. yeah modaco has all the stuff you need.

Can anyone breifly explain how to put pictures as your homescreen. I downloaded a couple from modaco.com and would like to have a different home screen. I've been browsing different folders through my phone but cant seem to come up with anything.

OMG I HAVE NEVER HATED A CELL PHONE THIS MUCH IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!

I'm a smart guy, I can usually handle a cell phone. I cannot for the life of me:

1. figure out how to make an mp3 show up in that d@mn ringtone list
2. change the background picture to one that uploaded from my computer
3. change the order of the start menu to stuff i actually use
4. turn the speakerphone on without going through four button presses (i know it's not really four, but close enough)
5. I gave up, and am very close to throwing it out the window. But how the freak do you factory reset this thing so I can send it back to Cingular's junk pile where it belongs?

It looks like you hate Windows phones as much as I hate Nokias, but well, to each its own. Here are the answers to all of your questions. BTW: the Microsoft Smartphone forum here in HoFo would've been quite helpful.

1. figure out how to make an mp3 show up in that d@mn ringtone list

Save the files in \Storage\Application Data\Sounds

2. change the background picture to one that uploaded from my computer

I keep my uploaded wallpapers on \Storage\My Documents. To access them, go to Start - Settings - Home Screen and scroll left and right at the Background Image list.

3. change the order of the start menu to stuff i actually use

FROM THE PHONE's File Manager, navigate to \Storage\Windows\Start Menu and rearrange the items by moving/copying them to folders where they make more sense to you. Do not try this from your PC with ActiveSync as it won't allow you to move most of the shortcuts.

4. turn the speakerphone on without going through four button presses (i know it's not really four, but close enough)

While in a call, or even while the other party is still ringing, press the right soft key, and press the number next to Speakerphone On. That narrows it down to 2 keypresses.

Go to Start Menu - Accessories - Clear Storage. Or while the phone is turned off, hold down both soft keys and press the Power button. Keep holding the softkeys until a message appears prompting you to press 0 (zero) to clear the phone's memory.

you can narrow to one button press: when on the phone, hold down the green send button for two seconds. speakerphone will turn on

Cinguiliano, Thanks for the answers, and I did try to post in the Microsoft Smartphone forum, as well as look around for some stickies or FAQ or something, to no avail. I like my nokia, I can throw that ringtone in any old folder and it'll show up, same for the background.

Rcadden: You should check out the Microsoft Smartphone Forums here.MGN (www.mobilegadgetnews.com) is a good place to go also. Thats where I went when I had my 5600. I would still have it if the RF wasn't so crappy.

Oops too late. You can still give MGN a try though
