Cingular in Canada

I don't know if this is the correct forum but here goes. I was a Verizon customer for years. I switched to Cingular because I was told by Cingular that they have much better service in Canada (Rodgers?). I travel a lot in Canada and the phone service has been okay. When I was thinking about switching, the person at Cingular I spoke to promisied that me North America plan with unlimited internet would work for voice and data in the states, Canada and Mexico with no problem and all for the cost of the plans I am on.

Now I'm getting billed for using the internet to check e-mails in Canada! I am really mad about this because I was very clear about my need for voice and data in the states and Canada and was told it was all covered by my plan. After I called Cingular and asked them what was going on I was told that the unlimited internet is ONLY in the states! I'm really ticked off about this. I was hoping Cingular would be diffrent then Verizon as far as say one thing and do another. But I guess not. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?? I am a very good customer and always pay my bills on time with no problems at all. Thanks for letting rambel on. Did I say how mad I am yet??

i understand your frustration and i know not everyone would do this but you might want to read the fine print where it clearly states that data usage outside of the US will be considered intarnational data roaming... what i would do is go to the place where you got the phone and see that guy credit your account.

Audiovoxx,
Thanks for the note. The problem is I bought the phone two months ago witha two year contract and they will tell me the same thing as you did. Yes, I should have read the fine print but I was told by more then one persone at Cinglar that Canada was covered with the same program as the states. I guess when a few people told me I just believed them. Shame on me and them but I am still mad at them. I was misled and I trusted them. My bad. Never again!

Yeah, I'm not sure how the media stuff works, but on a pure data-plan (tethered) there are roaming charges in Canada and Mexico.
I'm on the old AT&TWS plan, and only use Canada for voice - Rogers works well, and has a TON of spectrum, especially in some of the cities where they bough Fido - ~70MHz, including 25MHz of 800 MHz spectrum.
I've roamed in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Welland, Hamilton, Guelph, Toronto and Sault Ste. Marie without any issues.
If you're looking into Southern Ontario, Steve Punter's web site has it covered

If you are in canada and need data signup for rogers

Posted by: olds442

Thanks but I already pay for Cingular and I was told the data program worked in Canada at no extra cost. Thanks though.

Well if you had a blackberry you could do the $69 rate that gives you no data roaming anywhere in the world

I guess I only have two more years to wait until my Cingular contract is done.....Haha.

I hope you aren't spending two whole years in Canada feeling bad about this, based upon a misunderstanding with Cingular. It's not worth it.

Better to pay the ETF and move on, although I bet Cingular is still an economical option for you unless you're doing some heavy browsing up there.
