How to check if my 903 is new or used?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jtcb

I just received my 903 that I bought from a seller in Japan. It is locked so I have to unlock it 1st in order to use it in NA. Now I need to know something. The seller claims it is brand new never used. I sensed it is otherwise. I know the phone should comes in plastic like the pic below. Well, there is no plastic. The orginial screen protector is missing. The lense protector is there though.. The 3G box that used to hold the manual is missing. The manual is missing. The battery is already inserted in the phone. It should comes in plastic.. I don't know if he purposely do these or not. I asked him to mark the package as gift and delcare the content as used phone parts so he might have remove all the plastic and screen protector... I don't know.

So the only way to check is to look at the life timer.. but since it is still locked, is there any way to check? That brings me to another question. Will unlocking or flashing the phone to different fw reset the life timer to back to zero?

TIA.

Were the headphones still tied?

Sounds used to me. Are you sure it was "like new"?

Posted by: jtcb

It advertied as new untouched.. Every item that has cable is tied.. If it is used, it can be tied easily right?

Posted by: studiddy

Sounds used. I don't think there would any reason to put the battery in, take off the screen protector, and throw away the packaging to make it look like a gift. Who takes out the manuals when they give someone something.

Posted by: Timsta

well... its hard to say. u would have to check life timer if anything. but thena gain. if it was used.. that lens protector comes off sooo easily. who knows.. maybe the guy just took the carton away for wahtever reason.

Posted by: jtcb

The phone came with the orginial box. It is just the manual box and manual and some other stuff are missing as noted above. Just wondering does that label that is on the phone's plastic bag acts as a seal?

So is there any way to check the life timer with a NA simcard? Tim, can you help me here? I guess you know since you do unlocking for people. Is there any way to check? If I have to unlock the phone first, will unlocking reset the timer to zero? I guess looking at the life timer is the only way to check..

Posted by: Timsta

you would need to unlock it first. i don't have a voda card on me. if u want to really really want to find out tonight. i can do it tonite.

Posted by: The Rex

check the battery contacts

Posted by: BMWFilms

that white label should have been on your screen protector (the factory one).

Posted by: jdm_cars

umm.. it usually goes you get what you pay for.

Anyway, I think checking the life timer would be useless on this phone, once you reflash it and do a master reset, all that is gone.

I would have to say, to tell whether it is new or used usually it usually comes down to how reputable the seller is.

If the guy has a lot for sale, more than likely it is new, if the guy has only has one it is more than likely used.

Posted by: BMWFilms

so jtcb was it new or used?

Posted by: jtcb

don't know yet.. and probably won't know because I am returning it. From my past pruchases of new phone, every one of them must comes with a screen protector.. He argues that it never comes with on. He must be lying..

Posted by: BMWFilms

Mine came with the Sharp factory screen protector and that white sticker was on top of it. Everybody else here would attest to that as well. Your seller is full of crap.

Posted by: jtcb

So is that plastic bag that used to hold the phone sealed with that white sticker or is it open bag? He has 100% feedback and I don't know why he did this.

This is true, I have had three Brand New 903SH come thru my hands and all three of them have the screen protectors on the LCD and camera Lens, Not to mention the TV call white warning sticker on the inside LCD.

Posted by: BMWFilms

This is what all of our Sharp 903s looked like at birth...lol

Posted by: MODist

R there no scratces on it's body?

Posted by: Kevbodian

the phone is new. why are you worried in the first place? because it was cheap? the phone is only about $200 bux for most new customers in Japan anyways. so if the person didnt want to stay with vodafone, they dont care to sell the phone cheap.

all the stickers look fresh like on the minisd baggie. screen protector may have been removed and the guy may have used like <1hr of talktime... but the phone is new.

wow i just contradicted myself. anyways, the guy probably used it for at most a week or two. so the phone is most likely new.

Posted by: wai_lai416

were u able to powerup the phone without charging it?

Posted by: BMWFilms

hey jtcb, don't return it if it was a steal of a price.

Posted by: PY0413

I Think That White Sickter You Have On The Plastic Bag Is Supposed To Be On The Inside Screen Of The Phone. At Least, When I Got Got My 903sh, It Wasn't Like Yours.

Yes, the sticker is supposed to be on the inside LCD, but like the others said it don't matter if you got it for a steal of a price; if you paid full going price these days then yeah I would be mad.

Besides, not to many people are as anal about this kind of stuff like you or me to others it's just a phone.

Most sellers from Hong Kong just remove that sticker anyway cause when they unlock it (Flash it) they wanna be able to see if it is working right or not before they give it to the customer. Now if your phone came brand new Locked phone from Japan, most likely the phone wouldn't have been touched, which is the way I prefer cause I want to be the one to unlock it myself.

Regardless, just buy yourself a new screen protector like those EXiM ones sold on ebay and forget about it already, it's a great phone just enjoy it.

Is $640CAD shipped from Japan to Canada a steal of a price? Then I have to unlock/flash to different fw, which costs ~$50. That's 700CAD already.

Posted by: BMWFilms

Sounds like a rip now...hehe u didn't say the price before

Posted by: jtcb

You didn't ask until now..

okay the problem is that he paid for a new phone and got a used one, it really shouldn't matter in what condition, how used it is.. it was still advertised as new and in reality it's used, so I suggest he contacts paypal to get his money back. I've been in a situation like this and paypal will back you 100% on this one.

Posted by: BMWFilms

leave that guy bad feedback and screw with his rating for selling used stuff off as new. and get your money back for false advertising.

Posted by: jtcb

I have returned the phone and got partial refund. I paid $640.. got $560 back.. The $80 deduction he said is for the shipping, ebay and paypal fee. Is it about right? Shipping cost is $40.. so left $40 for both fees..

@volcompunk, how do I go about filing a report to ebay and paypal? I want every $ back since I retuned the phone and he didn't really sell me anything now.

Posted by: BMWFilms

in the Ebay feedback parts there's a part about item being slightly different from description and you use that part to get your money back. Follow the procedures and open up a dispute with him or her. They have like a few days to respond and Paypal will rule on whos right.

Posted by: volcompunk

First of all you should never let them try and do a "partial refund", it usually just a way to scam you for money that's rightfully yours. You are entitled to all of your money back, and you should only have to pay for the shipping back to the seller.

go to your my ebay page and then on the item click the little box that pops down like "see sellers other items" etc, and there should be an option like "item not recieved" click that and it should redirect you to paypal. They'll ask you to set up a "item not as described" case and then tell them exactly what happened and how he's trying to extort 80 dollars from you etc... then they'll have case workers working on it and also you should provide them with pictures to prove it wasn't new. The money gets taken out of the seller's paypal account immediately and he can't do anything about it, and until the situation gets figured out by the guys at paypal he can't touch the $640, so trust me he'll probably be more than eager to give you your $80 back.

anyway, let me know how it goes..

Posted by: BMWFilms

use the picture up there as part of your case as we all can attest to what a new Sharp 903SH should be like.

Posted by: jtcb

He is local but the phone is being shipped from Japan. At first he is not willing to refund at all. After some chatting we agreed to do partial refund. What is the chance for me to get the remaining $ back?

Do they need any kind of proof as to the condition of the phone when it arrives? I have return it already and got n proof now..

Posted by: BMWFilms

those pictures you had up are partial proof?

Posted by: yis903unposubl

i would have to say: as long as it looks new, and it works, who cares.

Posted by: tiutiu0521

Check is there any scratch or not...

I'd have to agree. I mean.. it would be great if you got your money back, but think about it: if it doesn't work out.. you lost $80. And if you decide to buy the phone from someone else.. it would be like you bought it for whatever that price is PLUS $80, just cause you wanted a new one.

Posted by: jtcb

I filed a complain. I will keep you guys posted.. Thanks for your support..

Posted by: Timsta

u may have paid a bit more than u could have paid..b ut u already paid. ur gonn ahave to ship it back to him.. that costs money too.. why not just keep it around? i kno u feel u got shafted but... thats the chances with ebay. pretty much. as long as they aren't scratches... it should be ok.

Posted by: S.L

partial refund? that sucks. well.. i guess you could consider it lucky that the seller is even responding to you. i've heard horror stories where ppl buy 903sh from some seller in australia.. and a month later.. the phone still hasn't been shipped to them.

Posted by: jtcb

Tim, he is local and we (our friends) met up and did the return/refund. But I want the $80 back also..

I guess you guys did some homework and knew what auction I was talking about right? He has 100% feedback..

Looking at Kevbodian's post makes me wonder.. are you the seller, Jacky, or the other dude that my friend met yesterday. If you are one of the three persons, you are really contradicting yourself. The phone advertised as brand new untouched unopend. Now you are saying "the guy may have used like <1hr of talktime... but the phone is new", and "the guy probably used it for at most a week or two. so the phone is most likely new". How is that brand new untouched then?

Posted by: jtcb

FYI, I got my $80 back. Thanks guys.

so your back at step A

i didn't say anything about untouched. however, i know many japanese here in canada who even though they used the phone, they hardly touched them. everything perfect. The guy in the add probably used it for a few days. Even still, does that matter?

who is Jacky? if you are local to Timsta, then I guess you are local to me too.

edit--
lol, i even admitted that i contradicted myself a little bit. in your very first post, all the baggies around the items looks brand spankin new. the point is, there is nothing to worry about. just try trusting your seller and use your common sense. he says new and touched. baggies havent been opened yet and there is no sign of them being opened.

phone is all good. so what if he may have used it a few days or made a few minutes in calls. you're still getting a brand new phone.

Posted by: Kevbodian

do you mind if we ask who the seller was on ebay?

that is a condradiction in it's self. when one buys a "brand new untouched" phone, they expect that, and when they get otherwise than they are entitled to want to get thier money back. He only wants what should be normal to want, a unopened, unused phone for the price that the used phone was trying to be sold for. a new phone is a new phone and a used phone is a used phone. thats all there is to it!

Posted by: X20A

If they're going to unlock it and do f/w upgrades, etc, of course they'll have to take out the phone etc, make test calls... of course not phone that is brand new unlocked is going to be untouched with no calls, etc.

Posted by: khaltire

Kev sorry man but you are crackin out... I mean whats this crap about "trust the seller", he says its new etc.. the thing is, the phone wasn't new, it was taken out of the bag, screen protector taken off. This guy just wants a new phone like he expected. You know Im sure he would have paid less if it said "Used for 1 hr"... sorry but what you're saying is stupid and it sounds like you are the sellers best friend. And yes, you should get all your money back if you do the claim. And he shouldnt charge you for PP and ebay fees cause when he does the refund, and reports you as returning the product, hell get both back...

Also, can I ask why you paid Paypal and not cash if it was local? Is that cause you paid him through paypal and then he got it for you later? You should have just gone to his house, dropped off the money, and that way youd know where he lived.
