CL.GIF on External Screen: Razr V3

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, I've read the threads in Hofo and Motox and thought I had it licked. But, for some reason, I can't upload or change the gif image on my external LCD. I have a TMo branded phone which came with a Tmo cl.gif file. I'm using P2KTools to change. I clicked on Tools/External LCD and tried to change but now all I have is a default Moto symbol and can't change back to the Tmo gif or change it to one that I want to use.

What steps am I missing? This seems to simple to me as it should be straight forward. Been using MS Smartphones and Pocket PC's for too long I guess as I"m now brain dead on basics!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for that. Still not working. The external LCD still displays the generic Moto logo.

This can't be this difficult and I"ve done a lot of hacks on many phones. I'm now using PK Manager to change the cl.gif. It is the right size but it just won't take.

Did you happen to change the attributes and delete the old cl.gif file before uploading the new one. And once this is done, reboot the phone and all should be well.

My guess is that the old file isn't getting uploaded since the file attributes may n ot be changed.

Posted by: smfa1965

So do I need to change the attributes "first" before I delete the file? I"ve been using P2KMan and P2KToos to do all of this. Is there a different program I should be using?

Posted by: ScruffyGuy

I use Pk2Commander. And yes, change the attributes, delete the file, make sure it is gone, and upload the new file then make sure it is there.

Just curious, where are you uploading the file to?

Posted by: smfa1965

Still not working. Do I need to have the file attributes set a certain way on the computer side before uploading? This is what I did this time:

Loaded P2K Commander and went to the /a/mobile/system/ directory. Clicked on cl.gif, rt click Attribute. Unchecked System and do not copy. This changes the attribute to all zeros (070000). Deleted cl.gif and restarted the phone. Cl.gif is now missing from the /system/ directory. Copied my new cl.gif to the phone in /a/mobile/system/. Changed the attributes back to 070004 (also tried 0700400) and restared the phone. Same generic Moto logo comes up. This can't be that difficult!!

My file has an attribute of 0044. Also, what size is the file you are uploading? If its to big, it won't work, to small, won't work.

Posted by: deanfx

all that 0044 denotes is that its hidden from your view via the phone, nothing else.

I used Bezol's p2ktools from motomodders.net. I think the old site is still up with downloads here http://82.165.243.99/

Well I checked the properties of the file and it says it's 6Kb in size. The cl.gif file is one I received from a Skin I downloaded off of MotoModders, so I'm assuming it must work. I'll upload it here for someone to try. I'll also try changing it to 0044, but I think I did that already and it didn't work. Thanks everyone for continuing to help me trouble shoot this.

I"ll add one more thing. Perhaps the problem started when I used P2KTools menu option for External LCD. I didn't realize that this was for adding a line of text to display on the external LCD when open. As soon as I realized my error, I unchecked this option and restarted the phone. After that, the T-Mobile gif never displayed again. That's when I started looking for another cl.gif to put in it's place. Looks like something got screwed up because as I've said before, this shouldn't be this difficult and I've done much hard tweaks on other phones.

Oh well, looks like I'll have to live with the Moto logo for now.

i used p2kman....photoshop cs2....and http://www.xlr8.us/hofo/

the tutorial explains how to do it....edit the gif file....delete the old one...restart phone....upload new one (same name as old one) and the restart phone...thats how i did mine and its fine.

Download and check out seem 004a_0001 -- I don't have a V3 but a V360 which uses the same cl.gif, and I noticed that this setting:

offset 27 (01 for custom outer text stored in seems 0061/0062, 02 for Motorola icon)

...is set to 00 on my phone. So, I would *guess* that 00 = "use file named in 0061/0062" on these newer phones with external pics. Check yours out, see if it says 02. 0061/0062 on mine actually have the *path* to /a/mobile/system/cl.gif (seperated by NULL bytes) inside. Make sure you didn't mess up your 0061/0062 as well with P2KTools, it probably doesn't understand these newer phones with external pics.

Thank you rivvah!! And everyone else as well. The problem was in the 0061_0001 Seem. Perhaps it was mentioned by others and I missed it, but the 0061 Seem is the one that the phone uses and the 0062 Seem is the backup. Needless to say, they didn't match. Looking closely at 0062 showed the path to the /a/mobile/system/cl.gif, but the 0061 Seem just showed a bunch of Hex numbers. Copying 0062 on top of 0061 finally allowed the cl.gif to display correctly.

Wow! Standard Moto phones (meaning non-windows smartphones) are much more difficult to troubleshoot!

Thanks everyone for helping out on this one....It will go along way in my new adventure of Hex editing.

Cheers,

Steve

PS: For those that are having problems, I still needed to edit offset 27 to 00 in the 004a_0001 Seem.

Sweet, glad to know it helped. I sent this over to xlr8 so maybe he can get it into map.txt for everyone when he does his next update.

can you use animated gifs?

Posted by: cerver7

no animated gifs on the phone besides for viewing in pictures menu and screen savers....not allowed on wallpaper or cl.gif

I know this thread is old, but I'm having the same problem... I tried chaning offset 27 to 00 and 01. 00 gave me a blank white screen which I guess is progress and 01 gave me the stock motorols lcd. Anyone know what I'm supposed to do? Am I suppose to just download seem 0061-0001 and 0062-0001 and make 0061 a duplicate of 0062? Sorry for the revival.

Posted by: smfa1965

Download both Seems 061 and 062 and make a copy of them some where else on your computer, just in case

As I stated earlier, my Seem 062 pointed to the right place, but Seem 061 did not. Look in 062, make sure it's pointing to /a/mobile/system/cl.gif. Then check 061 see what it says. If it was like mine, just copy 062 on top of 061. Now upload it to your phone. Also make sure you've added your cl.gif file in /a/mobile/system. Make sure it's the right size/dimensions. My cl.gif is less than or at 6Kb.

Posted by: MysterGoode

I tried that and it changed the background but instead of the new pic I put in (which was 2kb -the same size as the stock moto) it was just a blank white screen. I also used PKTools and had custom text there for a little but I unchecked the box and the screen was still just blank white. Any thoughts? Thanks again for the reply, BTW.
