Dialing on a P910 w/ out the flip...

In the name of all things stupid, here are my silly dialing questions...

Thinking of getting the P910a and using it without the removable flip. If this is the case, how difficult is it to simply A) Dial a number, B) find a name in the phonebook, and C) use voice dialling?

Do the numbers show up in a virtual keypad on the touchscreen like the Treo? Can I use the scrolly jog dial thingy to scroll down to names in the phone book? Does the P910 operate by way of voice tags, or does it operate similar to the Motorola V710 where you don't have to train it at all, or just verbally say numbers to dial?

I'm in my car a lot and being in Metro LA, traffic can go from 80mph to 8mph in the space of 400' sometimes and I need to be able to access numbers quickly! I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on this bad boy (unless the Nokia N80 miraculously appears in the market as non-grey market) this week!

BTW... kinda OT--anybody use Opera Mini on the P910?

Yes, there is a screen where the numbers are and you can dial using the on screen numbers. In fact you can have the 14 usual buttons 0-9 and * and # take up 80% of the screen or you can have it pop up a virtual flip. The latter is useless especially if you are driving and the former does not thrill me either. I love my P910a but I have to tell you, using it without a flip as a phone is not the best ( I have to use it without a flip lest my 2-year old rip the flip out.) So if you intend to do a lot of dialing while driving, think twice.

The voice dialing is tag based and you can also scroll down the contacts list and then pick a number from the contact using just the jog dial. That works pretty good.

On the OT part, I am unable to run Opera Mini in the High-Memory mode (that's the default download you get from the site.) Gives me a KERN-EXEC exception. I forced it to get the Low Memory one and that works but it's not very good looking. So I'm back to the built-in browser, it works better for me than Opera 6.31.

Good luck with your choice.

PS: Ritz Camera is carrying the N90 sanctioned by T-Mobile. Not sure about how well it will work with Cingular.

Wow thanks for the quick response haritia!

As long as I can dial by voice tag, I think I'll be OK. I was very accustomed to all my phones in the past where I could just hold down a number to quick dial someone--I wonder if that'll work w/ the touchscreen? Otherwise, the Jog Dial would suffice. I hope there's not much menu lag--that's what I dislike most about my v3 currently.

If you're using the built-in browser, can that still work with the cheap T-Mobile Web/TZones $5-6 package? The main (ok, the sole) attraction of Opera Mini for me is the ability to browse any website without having to pay for the $20 Blackberry client package.

Yes, I am intending to drop Cingular for T-Mo. Ritz has only the N90, or also the N80? I can't seem to find anything on their website--perhaps it's just the in-mall stores only?

Thanks again for your help (and sorry for being a pain!)!

Jog dial is quick enough. I have about 500 contacts and the scrolling is more than acceptable.

Actually using the $5 t-zones is just fine with both the builtin one and Opera 6.31 (not mini) I am able to browse real sites on the net just fine.

The N90 at Ritz can be found at http://www.ritzcamera.com/webapp/wc...ductId=13350713

Excellent. The T-zones really makes it much more palatable instead of paying $20/mo through Cingular.

Thanks for the link to the N90. After looking at it, I think I'll be leaving my digital photo duty to my Nikon D70.

This 910a seems to be a real winner! Do you or does anybody find reason NOT to go for it?

P910 does not have the best virtual flip buttons because they are waaayyy too small for my fingers. (I'm a 5.10inch male asian)

The only con I have is the Syncing. Difficult to get set up originally, doesn't work with firewalls very well. Once set up works OK.
Excellent RF and lots of programs available
You'll like it
