Need advice: Current RF/call quality champs?

On Cingular, of course... I've been using a Moto MPx220 for nearly a year now, and while I very much like the Windows smartphone aspects, I have to say (and I know this has been discussed to death) the call quality is not very good.

I'd like to stay w/a Windows smartphone, but at this point I'm willing to give that up just to be able to make a decent-sounding call that hangs onto the RF signal. I've read here that the RAZR does pretty well, and was curious about the Treo 650, but was nervous about all the posts about resets/lockups/etc. Also, that the Treo 700 may be coming soon.

Can you experienced folks give me maybe the top three RF/call quality champs currently on Cingular? Disregard all other "extra" features such as cameras, MP3, etc. And either form-factor is fine (flip or not-flip, I mean--and include PDA types as well if they measure up to what I want).

And if there's a new phone or phones getting ready to come out that are reputed to be good in the RF/call quality area, let me know about those too. Thanks.

I had the MPx220 for about a month but one day I had to use my MPx200 because my battery was dead. After that day of use with the MPx200 I couldn't go back to the 220.

I purchased the Audiovox SMT5600 and it was 10x better for Signal and Call Quality. It lasted about 8 months (most phones don't make it past the 6 month mark with me) and now I am waiting on the HTC 8125 to come out.

My wife started out also w/the MPx220, killed it in 6 months, and Cingular XBM'd her the SMT5600--that was during the time they'd pulled the MPx220 from their shelves. While I think it's a sturdier phone for her, I've noticed--at least in our calling area--that when she's talking to me on her SMT5600, it sounds kind of muffled. Could be lots of reasons for that, so I don't necessarily disagree w/your experience.

I actually did consider the 5600 for myself, but after playing w/hers for a bit, I had some trouble holding onto it while pressing buttons--the way the phone tapers down towards the keypad spells trouble for my extra-large hands. And I also couldn't handle that joystick, tho I imagine I could have gotten used to it.

On the Cingular website, at least, all I see is the 6010. Might those others be available in the stores? Or were you simply suggesting that I find the unlocked versions of the others?

I've been looking for this phone in the stores, just to handle it and see if I like it, but have yet to come across one. I've heard mostly good things about it, primarily its good call quality, which of course is the reason I started this thread. Are the Cingular stores going to be carrying them soon, or should I just find an unlocked one?

I was a bit surprised not to see the RAZR listed here as a candidate for what I wanted, as I have read on other posts that it's supposed to have good RF and call quality. Is this untrue?

The Razr has excellent call quality and reception. The problem is that it's all subjective; some people think it's good and others think it's crap.

I personally love my Razr; the call quality and reception destroy my v220, my brothers 6230, and my fiancee's LG C2000.

My vote is for the Razr.

Is the Motorola V557 too new to know where it falls in the RF arena?

Anyone out there in a fringe signal area bought one and had enough time to be happy, sad or ready to shoot the phone into orbit yet?

the Treo 650 has been the best RF/Call of the phone I HAVE owned which was, RAZR V3, MPX220, SMT5600, V551, v400, Nokia 3590, Nokia 6230, Nokia 6800, Nokia 6200, Nokia N-Gage QD.

I have been through 5 MPx220s for issues from lockups to the camera not working. Cingular kept sending me a refurbed mpx and every time said "if you have another problem with your MPx, next time you can exchange it for the SMT5600" Well, their story seems to change every time, but needless to say I never got my SMT5600 . Anyhow, I found the 1.43 ROM for the MPx220 did help with call quality, but then recently went to the Asian 3.46 ROM. None of my mpxs have ever sounded this good. If you want to stay with a Smartphone and dont mind spending the cash, I would say go with the SMT5600, but you might want to look into upgrading your MPx's ROM first, and see how you like it. As for the other phones mentioned in this thread, I'm not sure. I stopped using Nokias with the 3560 and the Moto OS with the v600. I'm a smartphone user and will never look back.

I agree about the 6010, also the smaller 3120 is great. The RAZR is also excellent IMO.

My V635 is leaps and bounds better than my SE S710a was.
