Well I was customizing a bimmer on bmwusa.com and they give an option "leatherette" as opposed to leather. What exactly is leatherette and what does it look like? does it look like real leather, does anyone have any pictures?

thanks

it looks like leather.... but doesn't smell like leather... it's stickie to skin when it's hot... it's vinyl I think...

leatherette is a cost-effective way to replace leather. its vinyl and is more durable than leather. Yes... it does not have the great leather smell and it is easier to maintain; opposite with leather when you need to maintain it with leather oils.

is leatherette made of leather? or is it plastic.

it is not made of leather...its vinyl. the texture is similar to leather tho (with the light creases of leather).

I think that the germans are one of the few car manufacturers
that still offer this fine option. Leatherette. Brings back such
wonderful memories of my youth. Like slapping a burger on the
grill sitting in a car with vinyl seats on a hot day. I once asked female
friend wearing a leather skirt if it's vinyl. The response was
very similar to the burger thing.
You would think that the largest consumer of cloth in N.A. would
be the clothing industry it isn't. It's the auto industry. Thank God.

Leatherette is much easier to clean than leather and from what I have heard does not crack as easily. I honestly think it looks okay with the sport seats compared to the leather. I do not like when people get both the premium package w/the sports pkg but then again it;s just my two cents.

just go with cloth

Leather looks better then cloth and it does not stain like cloth.

Leatherette is nothing compared to the real thing.
