I know this sounds silly but after all the hoo-ha over the 903, has anyone ever tested their unlocked 903 in Japan itself?
I have couple of trips to Tokyo in 2 mths time and I just wanna be sure this modified beauty actually works in Japan.

Has anyone tried yet?

It would sure cost a lot to roam unless you can buy W-CDMA prepaid SIMs?

unfortunately, you cannot get WCDMA prepaid sims. however, I know that with Fido, if I go to Japan, they do fone rentals at Narita and KIX. Just rent a phone and insert your Fido sim.

So in theory, all you have to do is bring your Sharp 802,902,903 or SE 802 to Japan and insert your sim card (provided you have permission to roam in Japan from Fido) and you should be on your way.

Check out Fido.ca and see their international roaming rates. I think they have a link to the information about renting handsets in Japan.

ahh...then yes it would be quite expensive for roaming.

i used to own a japanese version of the Sony Ericsson Z800 (SE-V802). Got it flashed with HK fw and used it in japan to make calls. Absolutely no problems.
Just wonder if the 903SH will serve me well in japan.

What did you have to do to activate the phone in Japan? Did you re-register with Vodafone for a resident package, or maybe already had one?

I now have a Vodafone pre-paid, but am looking for a way to carry only one unit while travelling and not have to pay roaming (doesn't everyone!?!)

nah.....to use yr flashed 903SH phone in Jap, you can still use yr 3G simcard.
Upon arrival in Japan, switch on yr 903SH
go
Go to connectivity /network settings / select network / set preferred
You should see a list of networks for your selection
Select either 3G NTT Docomo or JP Vodaphone
Either one of them should enable you to use yr phone.

I have tried Docomo network on my old V802SE many times....works flawlessly. No change in mobile nos.; no no. diverting, no nothing. Just like you are using the phone back home....

On my 903SH phone (UK fw) it has Docomo network in there....cant wait to test in Japan.

Most importantly, your simcard must be 3G.

Which carrier are you using?

Posted by: z18

Singtel - Singapore.
On my 903, I can also select 'YES OPTUS'. I take it that it's for Australia, no?

Posted by: dav34

Yeah... but I don't use Optus anymore, 'coz they have expensive rates... I'm with Vodafone now... and they gave me V800 for free...

Thanx Z-18 for the details about roaming. I forgot that you earlier said you have no reluctance to use roaming.

I was actually wondering whether anyone has used these flashed phones on normal Japanese lines, especially whether it is possible on a prepaid basis.
