Sidekick II, standard Sim card phone?

Hey all,
Sorry if this has been asked before, I've never been to the Danger forums...

Anyways, I have a friend who wants a Sidekick, however T-Mobile tells her she needs to pay an extra $30 a month to have the service. If she doesn't want this extra "sidekick" service, and simply wants the phone itself with basic T-Mobile service, can she just buy one (on ebay for instance) and pop her Sim card in? I realise some of the Sidekick specialty service won't be active, but will it be able to be used as a normal phone, and do anything a normal phone on a normal plan would do?

Thanks

If you don't have the data plan, the only thing that will work properly is the phone and SMS, which will work like any other cellphone (or better, because you have the nice keyboard for SMS)

The PDA apps (calendar, notes, etc) will all work normally but the data will not be backed up over the network so if the device crashes or the battery completely drains, you'll lose your data. Its RAM-resident because normal devices back up automatically over the network.

If you buy a device, try to get one with the OS 2.3 update on it already - you won't be able to get OS updates without network service, but the 2.3 OS allows you to store contact info on the SIM card (older devices could just read, but not write, the SIM). This way she can use the SIMcard address book for phone numbers and not worry about losing them if the battery dies.

Doublecheck your prices though. If you have a regular voice (airtime) plan, adding on the sidekick data plan is only $20 a month - it's $30 a month if you do data-only and don't have a voice plan. $20 a month for all the stuff the device can do is chump change and well worth the price.

iight..

I bought my sidekick new and this is what i currently have, but i want thoes services (aim, web browser ect.). A friend told me to call customer care and i did. They told me i have to configure the divice and by doin this i have to find the old users birthday or something like that. So my question is can i configure my sidekick without any information from the old user?

Sorry if this is off topic, I dident want to make a new thread.

1. You say you bought your SKII "new". In the next sentence you say CS is telling you you have to get the previous users "birthday"? Which is it? New or used? One statement is not true.

2. Since you need information about the previous owner that you don't have, this tells me you didn't know the original owner and probably don't have legal rights to that SKII.

Another variation on "I found a SKII...". And you can find all this by searching this forum.

I have 2 sk2s, one of which I bought off ebay. CC helped me change it over and they never asked me the previous owners birthday. I just had to give them the IM number and told them where I bought it and I wanted to register it in my name. Do you have a prepaid sidekick account or a regular account? The old info is already in the phone and registered to the previous owner. You have to have a sidekick data account either on a prepaid account or on a regular account.

As Chinasaur said, you can'y have a "new" device with previous user info in it. If there's prior user info the device is tied to that user on the backend, and you will have to verrify the previous user's info in order to prove that you have legitimate ownership of the device (the previous owner can also call t-mo directly and have them disconnect the old username from the device, then you can reregister it without issue).

I meant bought a used sidekick

The original owner dident want a sidekick anymore so he sold it to a friend then the friend just lookin to resell just sold it to me. I got a simcard. Then i hit my friend up lookin for the original user and somethin happen to him he moved or something..

So I cant enable the services on my sidekick any other way????
