If Your Thinking Of Getting A Sidekick II Dont Bother. You Cant Do Anything With It Unless You Give Your Money Away. Im Gonna Move On To Another Phone And Use The Sk2 As A Paper Weight Until Someone With A Dev Key Gets The Balls To Post In One Of The Online Fourms.

What does that have to do with anything? and fwiw I have a dev key. not sure how that effects you using your sk2... but there.

I Don't Understand What You Mean About A Dev Key Either. I Have One Too, And I Post In Probably *Most* Of The Online Forums. Not Sure Why That Would Upset You If It Does, But If It Does I'm Sorry.

If You're Talking About Someone Posting A Dev Key *Itself* In The Forums, Fat Lot Of Good It Will Do. They're Tied To The IMEI Of The Device So Any One I Post Wouldn't Work On Your Device.

I Would Send You A Key For Your Device Out Of The Goodness Of My Heart, But Since You Said You Were Moving On To Another Phone I Guess I'm Too Late. Oh Well, Sorry About That.

i thought you said i is tied to the phone? also you claim you would send a key??? everyone i see that posts that say they have one dont seem to want to offer any type of help. if you have a key couple of questions.
1) does your phone need to be unlocked?
2) can you send stuff to you phone and save it (i.e.) ringtones, apps.
3) does the data cable have to be hooked to the phone to sennd stuff to the phone?
4) why not just make a app and post that would allow others to goto a site and get a ringtone or a wallpaper?

Posted by: divinatum

He may have referred you for one.

1) no.
2) ringtones & apps
3) yes
4) ringtones can be, wallpapes no.

Do you have any idea why this is?

I'll tell you.

Developer keys are for DEVELOPERS. I had to freaking learn Java to get one. It wasn't easy. Not impossible, but I did actually have to put forth a modicum of effort to do so. You say that you want a dev to "offer any type of help". You don't want any help, you want someone to give you a dev key for nothing. Why should I help you? Why should anybody? Developers who can get keys at all have precious few of them we can give away for the hell of it, which are reserved for other devices and people we know who are testing (or WRITING) other applications us - in other words, actually HELPING US by having a key.

Do you want to help a developer? Can you offer ANY skills other than the ability to load ringtones and download apps from SKDR? 'Cause I for one don't need those skills. Do you have ANY skills that might be of any interest to a developer? Do you want to do ANYTHING with a key other than get stuff for free because you feel you have some inherent God-given "right" to do so?

Now, tell me you're willing to "test my apps" in exchange for a key. Great, thanks, like I've never had anybody offer THAT before. Get in line, there are only about 8 bajillion people who've already PMed me and offered that service ahead of you. Enough where my sig on every other forum other than this one is (basically), "No, I will not get you a dev key so please don't ask" - and I *still* get dozens of people asking, every week.

So you have to understand that 99.99999999% of the people who can get developer keys under the new tighter rules are already sick to the teeth of people pestering them for keys or offering to "test apps" in exchange for a key. It's not you, don't take is personally, but I've heard pretty much any and every justification that you could possibly come up with for why I should give you a key, and I've heard them hundreds (I'm not lying) of times.

This is why you don't see "cool" devs here giving out keys like they're candy. There's not so many to be had that we can just give them to anyone who doesn't like the ringtone selection in the catalog. They're freaking precious. I sure wouldn't want to give you a key and then find out I need another one a week later for a device replacement and I can't get an extra one while you're out there jamming to whatever crap ringtone you want.

So no, you're not going to find a lot of devs willing to help. If you can bring a skill to the table that a developer may actually NEED, then there's possibly a developer out there who may be able to get you a key in exchange for whetever skill he/she might need from you. It HAS been done before. But you have to prove to that developer that you're worth a) them giving you one of an EXTREMELY limited number of keys, b) them supporting you in case you do something STUPID with the key, and c) them taking responsibility for you to abide by the NDAs and license agreements that are inherent in having a key. If you can prove that you're capable of those things, as well as provide a skill or service to a developer that might need something, then yes, you may be able to find a developer willing to get a key for you.

But wanting free apps and rangt0nez isn't the way to get one, and complaining about switching devices isn't going to guilt any of us into giving you one either. Generally speaking, I have a rule that I abide by in that anyone who specifically *asks* me for a key will never get one from me. I've given keys to people before. I've asked *them* for their assistance when I got to know them well enough to know that they'd provide something that I needed in the course of my app development.

There. Long winded? Certainly. Sarcastic? Yeah, that too. Enlightening? Hopefully.

Joe
I am not looking for a free ride by any means. I just think the end user should have more control (freedom) to purchase apps or ringtones then the limited choice we currently have. Me personaly I am an app man myself. Yes I would like to change my ringtone but that is not my main goal for visting the fourm. I sit here and read the posts in the pursuit of knowledge. I dont have a problem with putting in work to achieve a common goal. so I guess JAVA it is.

What you want is an open platform - which the hiptop is not, has never been, and very likely never will be. I'm not going to argue that point with anyone because, like all good religious issues, there's no argument that I could posit that would change your opinions, and none that you could that would change mine. I see good and bad on both sides of the equation. There are some very good benefits that a closed platform like the hiptop has - the carriers, to developers, and yes, even to end-users. There are benefits that an open platform has, and downsides to both.

You may not be looking for a free ride, but the reason you don't have developers here falling all over themselves to "help" is that you're looking for help literally with thousands of people in line in front of you that *are* looking for a free ride. It's difficult, if not impossible, to differentiate in word. Just in deed.

Go sign up at the dev site. Get the SDK, install it, learn how it works and what hiptop apps look like, and start asking questions. You'll have no limit to the numbers of devs willing to help you at that point. There's *always* room for one more developer in the community.

But I will warn in advance that open platform arguments over there aren't well received. Again, you can thank the first few thousand people for bringing it up. As a developer, the closed platform is what we have to deal with, and that's not going to change.

Hey I know java, but what's a dev key exactly do? And how could you compile the programs and install them on the sk2? data cable?

A dev key allows you to load applications onto the device. You can apply for a developer key once you have developed an applciation for the simulator and are ready to move onto on-device development.

Applications are built in java and compiled using javac and Apache Ant, along with some custom Danger tools. Apps are loaded onto the device using the dev console, but you can only load apps once the device has been unlocked with a developer key.

Keys are locked to a particular IMEI. You have to actually develop something to be able to create them.

The hiptop is not - and never will be - a friendly platform for 3rd party development. While the API is certainly nice, and the documentation is decent (albeit not excellent), the fact that you have to get your application approved by both Danger and the carriers before anyone without dev access can use it essentially precludes any nonprofessional development.

If you want a smartphone with lots of great 3rd-party freeware, get a Windows Mobile phone (not a Palm - almost all decent Palm software is $15+).

If you want an integrated platform with a truly excellent microbrowser and excellent AIM implementation, get a Hiptop. It's the only phone that I will carry.
