that's the one i have and it works fine

Posted by: timcasper

I'm on a mac and ran into the problem of deleting the verizon.gif with bitpim (instead of just overwriting it) and ending up with a permanent moto graphic on the outside cover. Any fix for this? Or is the only hope doing a seem edit on a PC?

Posted by: Adam12mac

I am using the DBT-120 bluetooth adapter that apple recommends and it works like a charm. I have done multiple syncs of all contacts and appointments. Obex works easily. Thanks to everyone who did the work to make this happen, especially llarkk! I've even been able to transfer ringtones I created using iTunes.

If you aren't using BT remember that the adapter I mentioned above sells for about $35 and its plug and play.

Posted by: dcalfine

whats the range like on the DBT-120? My mac sits under my desk and my phone will often be on top of it.

Posted by: eclipse525

Ok... so, I made 15-20sec .MP3 ringtone clips, then changed the .MP3 to .mid AND I've made a few wallpaper images at 176x220pix and saved them as "gif". I used BitPim and saved them in the "ringtones" and "pictures" folders repectively. They all copy over fine. When I go to access the wallpaper images in "MyPix" the image name is there but the image doesn't appear. As far as the ringtones, they are no where to be found. I even restarted the phone and still nothing. I'm not transfering via bluetooth but rather a direct USB cable.

Any clues?

Again, does anyone know how to change the speed dials?
I synced fine with Onsync and entourage, but the speed dials seem locked.

Also, when syncing using iSync names only come in with First Name, first. Any way to have Last Name, first?

Posted by: alhermizi

One more, please:

link or thead about EVDO DUN thru BT for the Razr...does it work?
phone sets up perfectly, but need the tel#, username info, pw, etc, and the modem script to use.

I may have missed it, but I dont think I saw this in any of the messages above.

OnSync handles Contacts better than iSync.

Does anyone know how to connect to Verizon's free (just uses minutes) Internet connection?

I had this functioning with my USB adapter with my old LG 4500 but can't get it to work on my RAZR.

I set up the device using the Bluetooth Setup Assistant, selected to dial directly to a specific number (as opposed to the high speed option), and entered in the following:

Telephone Number: #777
Account Name: <mycellphone10digits>@vzw3g.com
Password: vzw
Modem Script: VerizonNationalAccess

It says the setup was successful, but when I try to connect using the Bluetooth connection, it brings up a "modem error...check your settings". I actually see and hear the Mac communicating with the RAZR before it fails. Is my modem script wrong?

I too would like to know the exact setup for this as well on a Mac.

The stated range is about 30ft. It works throughout my appartment. I don't even need to take the phone out of my jacket pocket in the closet.

I don't know about transfering it .mid. I use mp3 files highly compressed. Works fine.

What's highly compressed? What's your settings? I honestly don't think it's the actual file. I've tried ".MP3" and ".MID" and not luck. Not to mention trying the images as "GIF" and JPG but it still doesn't work. I just don't get it. It shouldn't be that difficult.

I shorten the song to less than 30 seconds. Then I compress it to about 80kbps mono (40kbps). Then I just drop it into the audio folder using BT. It is immediately available on the phone as one of my ringtone options. It works every time.

what program are you using to shorten and compress your songs?

Posted by: mikekram

1) Thanks for the forum!!! I got bt isync and bt file xfer to work great.

2) "Unable to charge" when I plug in to usb. Verizon tech support (*611)thinks its a bad phone, but I'm not so sure.

3) do I need drivers for USB? How to install? I can see the phone in system preferences/network, but what next? what modem, etc. do I choose? I've tried two different usb cables (a camera one and one from radio shack....) and I get the same "unable to charge". (when the phone is on, I get the beebip when I plug in usb, but when it is off and I plug in usb, the phone turns itself on, beebip, and "unable to charge" displays.)

Thanks again for the forum. I'll try to contribute when I discover things.

(I thought Motorola made powerpc chips for the mac, but I don't see a mac version of their (probably overpriced) mobile phonetools.....

I have been unable to get mp3 ringtones to play on my phone. They appear
to transfer over ok (using Mac's bluetooth browser), but there is no audio
when I try to play them.

I think this may be a file format issue. I suspect the built-in ringtones are in
Qualcomm qcp format.

If someone has been able to transfer an mp3 file to the phone and sucessfully
gotten it to play, please detail your exact steps.

Thanks!

Joe

Posted by: MozarTT

Establish BT betwen Mac and phone
Choose browse device from BT menu
Copy mp3 ringtone files from Mac to ringtone folder on phone
Choose ringtone from phone menu

Posted by: dcalfine

I got it all set up. Wow. That's just amazing.

Thanks so much for your help guys.

Oh, btw, I got something figured out. I'm not sure if it was already established, but here goes. 176x184 is for wallpaper, 176x220 is for full screen images.

Posted by: dcalfine

Oh, wait, I have a quick question. Is there a way to edit the vcast animation that shows up when you turn on and off your phone to something else, like a movie from my computer?

Posted by: jmcguckin

Hey MozarTT,

I'm doing exactly the same steps you are; the files show up on my phone, but when I play them, I get only silence. I've dropped the files into the ringtones and into the audio folders.

What file extension are your files??

Posted by: eleclipper

to compress files use audacity files are .mp3 or .mid you can change the startup animation and there are tons of tuorials out there

Doug - did you ever get this to work? I am experiencing the same problem. It seems like if I choose an individual calendar that doesn't have any events in the time period I'm synching (two weeks), the synch will complete without this message, but I typically get another one stating that there is some problem with all day events. But as soon as I choose a calendar that has events within the two week period, I get the same message that you're getting. Contacts sync fine.

Any advice is appreciated.

I would like to remove the locked wallpapers, but none show up in the file system in BitPim under Motorola/Shared.

My phone is recognized, and I have been able to change the flip when open image, and startup and shutdown gifs. When I changed the startup/shutdown gifs, I dropped the images into the Motorola/Shared/Pictures folder. So even though nothing is seen I was able to make those changes.

I am wondering if anyone on a Mac can explain to me why BitPim fails to show any files under Motorola/Shared?

Has anyone also been able to remove the Verizon logo from both windows using BitPim?

Thanks!

I am using itunes to shorten the songs. I change the start and stop times in by hitting get info for the song file so that the song only plays for about 30 secs. BUT, its very important to realize that just changing the start and stop time does not reduce the size of the file itself. All of the data is still there. In order to shrink the file you need to export the song or burn it to a CD. Then import the song right back into itunes. Your song will now be a very small file containing only 30 seconds worth of data. Just drop it into the audio folder and you should be good to go.

I suggest you choose a bunch of songs and follow this procedure for the whole batch. I realize this procedure is probably clunky compared to using audacity. But if you don't want to learn a new program, this is the way to go.

The Razr will play mp3 songs as ringtones. In fact, it ships with some mp3s right in the ringtone list.

Posted by: bjsmith

Another comment about the inability to sync calendars on my Verizon RAZR - the same computer, sync program, set of calendars in iCal, bluetooth connection, and I'm able to sync contacts AND calendars without any problem whatsoever with my husband's Motoroal E815. Gotta be the RAZR, right?

Posted by: THEdAY

thankyou everyone on this forum for being so helpful about the razr v3c for verizon.
i like the others have successfully changed the picture on the small front screen flip open and both start up and closing gifs. both start up and closing gifs now show up as locked pics in the pics folder under their appropriate gif names.
so is there a way to delete the other locked pictures in the phone or are they just replaced with a same name gif?
also (most important to me, hopefully to others too) is there a way to extend video recording beyond the 15sec interval, whether it be mac or pc, it doesnt matter? i read around and haven't found any info.

btw, another flaw of the calender is the 2 time settings. make sure you don't put both times the same otherwise the phone will freeze when trying to enter calender. always put 2 different times. this is just through the phone when not hooked up to a computer. if you do have the 2 same time settings and the phone freezes when entering calender, wait and try to enter calender on another day. if and when you do enter calender, replace same times with 2 different times and the calender should be fine.
thanks again everyone, have a great new year.

Thank you so much for your help...I have actually found that a shareware program called MP3 Trimmer works VERY well to shorten songs, but right now my phone isn't playing them, the song is 30 secs, in MP3 format and about 800K, I can see it in the audio folder when i browse my device and I can see it on the phone, but it won't acutally play, and somewhat freezes up my phone.

Any ideas?

I don't know what to tell you. I've used this method on multiple tracks without any problems. The files play instantly on the phone.

Adam, how large is your file, because this is bothering me i can't bring the .MP3s over...i was able to do the wallpaper no problem...but i can't get the ringtones

Posted by: bjsmith

Kopeke -

I don't think it's the size of the file that is your problem. I've copied a full MP3 (4mb) via BT onto my RAZR and have been able to play the full song on my phone. When you say that the file wants to try to copy over as MP4, are you working with an MP3 song to begin with? If not, you need to convert it and if it's not a protected file from the music store, you can simply click on the song > Advanced > Convert to MP3. If it's a protected file, you need to burn it to disk first, then reimport it into your library as an MP3.

Ras1121 - what folder are you copying your MP3 into and how are you trying to play it on your phone? Can you send a copy of the MP3 that you're working with and I can see if it will copy/play on my phone. That way you can isolate it to either a problem with your phone or a problem with the file itself.

the MP3 automatically goes into my audio folder, even if i try to send it to the ringtone folder. The song name is shown on my list of ringtones, but when i scroll over it and try to select it (or play it) it just freezes up my phone and sometimes forces it to restart.

Posted by: bjsmith

I just sent you a PM to see if you want to send me the mp3 and I can try it on my end. My email is included in the PM.

do you have a MetaClasses.plist file for the V557 on a cingular network??? I tried modifying the v551 part of the metafile but I got an error saying some the changes were refused by the phone and all the contacts had numeric characters where the contacts names were,(same thing with the calendar...all numeric characters..)...

1 If you have already paired your v3c with your mac, delete the pairing in
System Preferences > Bluetooth.
2 Quit iSync if it is running and open a new Finder window and browse to /Applications/iSync/
3 Right click on iSync.app and select 'Show Package Contents'
4 Switch Finder to column view (apple-3)
5 Browse to iSync.app : Contents : PlugIns : ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice : Contents : PlugIns : PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin : Contents : Resources : MetaClasses.plist
6 Open MetaClasses.plist in your favorite text editor.
7 Search for E815 and after the final </dict> for the E815 identifier, make room and copy the following:

8 Go back to System Preferences > Bluetooth and click 'Set Up New Device' You will have to enable 'Find Me' on the V3C handset. Once the pairing process continues you will notice you now have the option to sync contacts via iSync.

9 Post here if you have any questions or PM me if you want a modified version of my MetaClasses.plist file.

Dude, thank you for the information regarding the Verizon Razr V3c Sync info. I was pulling my hair out the last few days. Finally I went to the Apple store and one of the guys found your thread and did everything on the spot at the genius bar in Soho. He was not suppose to but he it anyway and earned my eternal gratitude. Now, my Powerbook G4 and Razr V3c are truly isync.

Alternatively (and faster) you can change the start and stop times on the song info and then do a "Convert to MP3" under advanced. This will reconvert the song to MP3 (as long as MP3 is set in the preferences... and also make sure it's specifically not set to Variable Bitrate Encoding, these do not play on the RAZR) and will be the new length of the song, depending on what you set them to. If that doesn't make sense, let me know.

Can someone send me a file - or - I can send you one of mine to see

For any of you having trouble when applying this modification, & especially if you install the "modified iSync" app. I suggest you "repair permissions" after installation, prior to pairing & syncing. (Go>Utilities>Disk Utility>select your HD>click repair permissions) I found alot of repairs were made during the "repair" process. I'm using a G4 iBook with 10.4.3 & the modified app works great, both with BT and via USB cable. I will add that I have US Cellular, & our Razr came with the original Moto UI & full file transfer capabilities over BT, (D-link BT adaptor DBT-120) less "contacts" & "iCal".

Many thanks to those, for your efforts with the "mod" & scripting!

hillndale

Posted by: thenamcam

got isync to work once. using os 10.4.3 with modded isync. contacts work fine, but ical only synced completely once. now everytime it says sending chnages to phone, it dies out and says communication lost to device. deleted all isync files, and reinstalled, and deleted pairing several times.... thoughts? btw, modding seam for vibe ring works great!

Posted by: linda55

use audacity (freeware) to trim mp3s down, and use the preferences menu in audacity to compress the mp3s to "80". To export go to file> export MP3. It sounds the same but saves a lot of space

Posted by: dho

I tried your suggestions on a new v3c phone. It all seemed to work fine until the end of the sync. EVERY time it poops out when sending changes to the phone. I have ended up with TONS of duplicates for certain contacts.

this is the hardware and software setup..
Powerbook 15''
OS X 10.4.3
iSync 2.1.1
V3c razr verizon

I did have to edit the plist manually(Using property list editor) because you only posted your modifications in picture format. It all seems correct though.

This is driving me nuts. What should I do? Any suggestions?

edit: now that I think of it. Should I change the identification strings that mentioned CDMA to something that mention verizon?

I had a lot of trouble with iSync too at first, especially over USB before my BT module arrived. I even found that it was deleting random data, creating weird duplicate entries and even deleting random phone numbers. My advice to anyone is to back up your data in Address Book before you start playing around. (You'll find the backup option under the File menu, I believe).

Now that I'm on BT, it works much better. What finally worked for me was to delete the phone in iSync then add it again. At that point iSync asks whether you want to merge contacts between phone and computer, or delete everything from the phone first and take straight from the computer. I chose the latter, and it's worked like a charm since then.

I have been having trouble getting iCal appointments generated on the phone to carry over to the computer, though they go fine from computer to phone. This is odd because when I was first playing around with it over USB I had lots of trouble with garbled contacts but no trouble with calandars.

Hopefully Apple will soon add the V3c to the supported iSync devices, maybe we'll see more reliable syncing at that point.

In addition to the V Cast animation that you get when you start up your phone, can you also change the opening verizon wireless picture? Anybody know how to do either of these?

Hi Everyone,

I tried charging my Razr V3c on my 12" PB G4, but it won't do anything, but make beep noises.

I've been doing a lot of reading online to see what's going on and a lot of people are saying the only way to charge from USB is by installing the drivers (due to some kind of voltage restriction, which is disabled by the drivers). Since there are no drivers for the Mac OS X, I guess it would be impossible to charge the phone by the PB (which would be really awesome). However, I tried connecting the Razr by USB to my iMac G5 and what do you know! It charges!

But I would love it if I can charge it off my PB. Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks!

I tried charging on my G4 tower and found it flaky. I've yet to have a full, successful charge from my comp. I just don't think it was meant to be.

I've got a G4 titanium 15" powerbook, 10.3.9. When I plug in the phone to one of the USB jacks, sometimes the phone says it's charging, sometimes it does not. When it does not say it is charging, I simply unplug and replug - more often than not the second plug-in will start the charging.

It will NOT charge the phone if the powerbook is in sleep mode. I get the same every-other behavior on both the USB jacks. Works the same on AC or battery.

I read that it works on the PC as long as the drivers are installed. Does anyone know how to make a driver that would allow it to charge off of a PowerBook? It weird that it would charge without a problem on an iMac G5, but not a PowerBook. Maybe because the PowerBook offers too little power?

12" Powerbook with 10.3.9 installed...charges fine through mine.

Telephone Number: #777
Account Name: <mycellphone10digits>@vzw3g.com
Password: vzw
Modem Script: VerizonNationalAccess

It says the setup was successful, but when I try to connect using the Bluetooth connection, it brings up a "modem error...check your settings". I actually see and hear the Mac communicating with the RAZR before it fails. Is my modem script wrong?

i found how to stop choking while surfing and how to connect to google with razrv3/bt/macpbG4 ...yea!

there are 3 necessary downloads

1) Generic Modem Scripts from Ross Barkman's excellent resource at: http://www.taniwha.org.uk/
2) to get google access and gmail access the pakage to change MTU at http://mcleay.dyndns.org/osx (from http://www.macosxhints.com/article....002071201484272)
3) to stop "choking" while surfing Unlockupd works around a bug in lookupd, a system service which is required for proper operation of Mac OS X. If lookupd fails, the system quickly becomes unusable. Unlockupd periodically checks lookupd's status and forces it to restart should it fail.

This is exactly the same situation I have on two RAZR v3 Verizon phones (mine and my wife's). First BT sync works fine, then subsequent syncs die with "communication lost" message as above.

If I turn off "Sync Dates" the sync works fine every time. So the problem appears to be related to iCal/RAZR sync for me.

I just came to a PC computer lab and installed the PC driver and connected the V3c via USB. It's charging well on the PC (Dell Optiplex GX620).

Now why won't it work on the PB?

Gai, did you install anything or modify anything? Did you plug in the USB cable as soon as you got the phone without changing anything? If your running 10.3.9 and it charges fine, maybe there's something wrong with the 10.4.3 OS that won't allow it to charge. You seem to be the only person who made a post that's saying your V3c charges. Maybe it is the 10.4.3.

I can confirm that on my PowerBook with 10.4.3 the V3c does not charge via the USB cable either. Don't know what good that does, but I confirmed it too, lol.

Same here, turned off sync with calendars and it works fine. If I leave calendars on, I get the lost connection message. Using same powerbook/bluetooth, same calendars, but with my husband's E815, the calendars sync without problem, so I agree that it's definitely the RAZR.

??? I've copied a ton of MP3s to my RAZR and am currently using them as ringtones. I've done it via Bluetooth because I can't see any files in the motorola/shared/audio or /ringtone directory using BITPIM.

It's been an interesting afternoon. I finally got my USB cable and spent a good chunk of the day trying to get rid of the red bars, get rid of the Verizon banners, replace the flip-open image, replace the start and close images, etc.

Flip-open image:
Thanks to everyone's awesome posts, I was able to get the image swapped out that appears when my phone is flipped open. To do this, I created an image that is 96 in width and 80 in height and named it verizon.gif, and overwrote the existing file located in the /mobile folder using Bitpim.

Start and close images:
I was also able to swap out the customer_opening.gif and customer_closing.gif images, which replace the graphpics that appear when you power on your phone or shut it down. To do this, I created two graphics that are 176 in width and 220 in height and named them accordingly, and copied them to the /motorola/shared/picture folder using Bitpim.

Known Bitpim connection issues:
NOTE: when I'm connected via Bitpim, I can't see any of the contents of any of my shared folders, so I'm guessing that I'm overwriting what's there and it's the same technique as changing the flip-open image.

Also note for users trying to use Bitpim and are having problems getting it to detect your phone . . . don't try to use autodetect, it won't work. Instead, set the proper port:
BitPim > Preferences > Com Port Browse
If bluetooth is turned on on the phone, will get error message
Phone Type - Other CDMA phone
select usbmodem, not USB Device - Motorola PCS Product or anything that might look like it's a closer match with your cable, then click OK, and OK to finish settings.
Go right to FileSystem tab and expand folder - none of the other options are supported by Bitpim yet.

Skins/Themes:
I saw from some of the other (mostly-PC) posts that some users had success getting rid of the other Verizon banners (the one that appears on the outer screen when the phone is closed and the one that appears on the inner screen) AND the red banners by changing the skin. So, I went to http://gallery.mobile9.com/c/motorola-razr-v3-themes/1/ to grab a theme, renamed the three downloaded files identically to the three files present on my phone for the "Business" theme, which are located in /mobile/skins/business, and overwrite the files with the news ones.

Bad idea . . . the files were no longer visible in Bitpim and although my phone was OK, it disabled that particular theme and made it so when I go to change themes, the screen is basically all white. I can see enough to scroll through and guess at menu options so I was able to choose one of the other themes and all is well, but that particular theme cannot be restored. I tried copying the backup files that I took back into that folder, but no luck. I actually tried this with both the Business and Tropical theme and had the same results.

Outstanding:
What I'm still hoping to do:
  1. Remove the remaining Verizon banners (inside and out) (gotta be a way for Mac users to replace the skins and get rid of this)
  2. Remove the red bars (ditto)
  3. Delete unwanted files (pictures, ring tones, etc)
  4. Reprogram home buttons
  5. Get calendars to sync using iSync (may have to wait for Apple to come out with a new version of iSync)

Has anyone had any success with any of these outstanding issues?

Thanks to everyone on this forum who posted all of these incredible guides on how to do all of this. What an incredible user forum!

BJSmith, thanks for all your hard work trying to help out us Mac users. With only BitPim at our disposal, sometimes it seems like we get left in the dust when it comes to modding our phones.

I have a question about the "Start and Close Images". When you say you were able to replace them, are you referring to the initial "still" Verizon pictures that appear before the VCast animation on startup, and at the end of the VCast animation on close?

I look forward to what else you find out with the V3c and BitPim on a Mac. Keep up the good work!

Btw, I saw this image perusing the forum. Seems pretty relevant for this thread, lol. It is for the outer "flip-open" picture:

I have it on my V3c, and it is awesome! Original credit for the image goes to k.double.

Included below is the actual .gif, ready to be loaded onto your phone! (and btw, my image below is slightly different than the other Apple image in this forum. The one below is edited so it doesn't include any white dots on the screen! I downloaded the original from another thread, opened it up in Graphic Converter, and realized it had a transparent layer in it, which caused it to appear with white dots on the RAZR. I can't have that, so I fixed it. Download away! )

Shoot, I meant to include that info in my post. Here's what I get:

When I turn my phone on, I get a still Verizon graphic for what seems like an eternity, and then instead of going to the Verizon animation with sound, I get my custom still image with the Verizon sound. Not so bad, but I'd still like to replace the Verizon still image that I continue to see. And why does it take so long to start up?

When I turn my phone off, I only get my custom still image, accompanied by the Verizon sound. Much better.

I'm going to connect my phone to a Windows machine running Bitpim to see if I can get the file names in the shared folders that none of us can see. At least we can take a stab at what to replace.

There is a better explanation of this somewhere on this forum, but I couldn't find it. This may suffice:

Replace Verizon graphic when flip is open:

Create a .gif file that is 96x80 and name it verizon.gif
Using Bitpim go to the folder named Mobile and overwrite the verizon.gif with your version. (Do not erase the file that is there, only overwrite.)

Restart the phone

I wonder, since you said that your custom "still" picture replaced the VCast animations at startup/ end- have you tried replacing that with other animations, rather than just "still" images?

Try replacing it with the animations from this thread:

There are some pretty cool animations out there, but they only prove to slow down startup even further . . . and don't get rid of the initial Verizon still. So I chose one of the opening animations from your link, renamed it customer_opening.gif, and copied it in via Bitpim. When I restarted my phone, I still got the still Verizon image for the same start up period, seems like forever, and then got the animation for a longer duration than what my custom still was displaying and then at the end of the animation it just sat there. I had to cllick on the CLR button to get it to finish starting up.

I'm guessing there is a verizon_oepning.gif graphic out there that is the Verizon still. Not sure if I want to take a chance and start copying files out there willy-nilly without the ability to see them to delete them later.

I tried to connect my RAZR to Virtual PC to see if I could get into Bitpim on a Windows machine and see the file structure for the shared directories. Although Virtual PC recognizes my Motorola USB Razor connection, the Windows operating system itself doesn't recognize it. From the VPC forum on the Microsoft site, this is a known issue with Motorola phones. So that's not going to work . . . now I need to wait until Monday to hook up to a real Windows machine.

I have the same lack of success with charging my v3c on PB15-G4, IB-14G4, IB-12G4 abd IB-14G3 as others people.

I am using a USB cable from an Olympus camera, and a new USB cable purchased from Radio Shack with no success.

I spent over 3.5 hours on the phone on each of two sessions with motorola and verizon with only a growing appreciation about how little they know. One person said "return the phone", one said "can't do charging on the mac because no drivers available", and another said "all should work ok, macs don't need any drivers"......go figure......

I was advised to return the phone for replacement which I did with no difference with the new phone. Also, I tried another phone, still same "unable to charge" message. Sync, and file transfers all OK, USB modem works fine also.

Net result: 3 phones, 4 macs, 2 usb cables, still no charge.

What USB cable are the successful chargers using? I'm reluctant to buy the Motorola cable (if I can even find someone who has it in stock) unless I observe some successes.

I have a brand new Motorola cable SKN6371B and a cable from my Sony digital cable and neither of them charge the phone when plugged into my Powerbook G4 or my iMac G5. I never expected either of them to provide a charge while plugged in, though . . . don't you need to have a special cable that provides power?

I think I read on that thread somewhere that those animations were set to "loop" by accident. That might be the problem on why you have to press "clear". I think I may know why the Windows OS itself doesn't recognize the V3c. I think you have to download drivers for it. See ( http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...740&postcount=1 ) for more information on that. As for the sounds on start-up/ shutdown, I believe they are called:

/a/motorola/system/ui_start_dn_mono.mp_ (shutdown)
/a/motorola/system/ui_start_up_mono.mp_ (startup)

these are both .mp3's that have been renamed to .mp_

Giving credit where credit's due, the above sounds were discovered by GadgetFreak, or at least that is where I got my information

Hope that may help you bjsmith!

Btw, here's the better explanation I was looking for:

To edit the "flip open" picture:

1. Close all programs.
2. Connect your phone to pc via USB
3. Open bitpim
4. Expand your phones file system by double clicking on the folder to the left. If all is well and it expands skip tp step 6.
5. If you get a COM connection error: click Edit up top, then settings. Next to COM port you will see a "browse" button. Click that, then under "available ports" click "motorola USB modem". If this is under "unavailable ports" unplug the usb cord (computer side) and plug it back in. Hit refresh. Do this until "motorola usb modem" appears under available ports. Choose it, and click ok. Click ok again.
6. In the expanded view, you will see a folder named "mobile". Click it.
7. To the right you will see verizon.gif right click on that and choose "save". Save this file to the desktop or a folder in case you want to restore the verizon logo.
8. Right click on verizon.gif again and choose "overwrite"
9. Browse to the file you want on the front flip. Make sure it is within the proper size 96x80 pixels.
10. Double click the new file in the browser window, or click it, then click open.
11. The file will be uploaded to your phone.
12. Unplug usb cable and power down phone. Power on your phone, flip open and smile!!

The USB 2.0 Spec states that

"USB cable consists of four conductors, two power conductors, and two signal conductors. "

for further info, from the spec:

"Please send comments via electronic mail to techsup@usb.org
For industry information, refer to the USB Implementers Forum web page at http://www.usb.org"

Sooo, if the cable meets the USB 2.0 spec, it provides power. If the device uses it, it appears that "your mileage may vary..."

But we know the M$ ignores RFCs, so does Motorola ignore the USB spec?

Thanks again for the forum...good stuff here.

Ok, I think I may have found a Seem Editor for Mac that we can use on our V3c.

Here are some links about it:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/moto4lin/
http://moto4lin.sourceforge.net/wiki/Mac_OS_X

From what I have read, the program must be compiled to run on Mac OS X. However, I was able to find a link that has the program already compiled:

http://homepage.mac.com/gregmeach/H...ac/moto4lin.zip

I've yet to try out the program myself, but from what I've read, it should be able to modify seems for us on a Mac. And as we all know, this is what the Mac community has been missing out on. May this be what we are looking for....

I tried the compiled version. Didn't work. I'm running Tiger, that could be the source of the problem.

Yes, it is Mac compatible. I used these directions and was successful in editing my outer LCD. I know at Step 4 it gets kinda confusing. When you open BitPim you will be presented with multiple tabs in a window. You do the actual overwriting in the "Filesystem" panel of BitPim. Step 5 is the step for getting your USB cable to work. The USB cable I use is a makeshift hybrid. I took an USB extension cord and just snapped a 5 pin USB Mini adapter on the end of it, then plugged it into my phone. The phone was recognized in BitPim right away. So surely your "official" cable should be recognized as well. There must be something you are missing.

I tried it too, dcalfine. I couldn't get it to work either. I'm on Tiger as well. The application starts to open for all of a half second, then quits. I'm new to all this compiling stuff, so it may be that we need to install that "Qt/Mac binary installer.webloc" that is included in the .dmg as well. I almost am betting that the .webloc download link downloads the framework that needs to be installed first to run the actual program itself (which is compiled on the .dmg). If I wasn't on dial-up, I'd download it now and try it myself. Perhaps someone else is willing to give it a shot?

I don't think it has anything to do with the USB cables. All USB 2.0 cables has a power supply line.

From the research I did from reading other forums, there seem to be a "voltage limit" or something problem. Only the installation of drivers that disable that voltage problem will allow the V3c to charge. I've tried many times to make the V3c charge from my PB, but not possible. So I took the phone and the USB cable to a PC computer lab. Hooked it up to a Dell and it still didn't charge. ONLY AFTER I installed the DriverTool.exe (for windows) the V3c started charging.

We'll just have to wait for someone to come up with a Mac driver or some kind of hack. Trust me, I don't think it's the USB cables.

Thanks for helping out dcalfine. I started a thread over in the Motorola Modding forum asking if one of them could help us make sense of it all. Hopefully, someone will see it and help us get Moto4lin working!

My Verizon Razr V3C (bought Jan 5) had Device Services: Headset Voice Gateway, Handsfree Voice Gateway, OBEX File Transfer, Dial-Up Networking Gateway.
I got the Contacts and Calendar synced (iSync) the first day but hadn't known for sure that I could get it to work as a modem.

If you're browsing this forum looking for the answer, yes, it did work as a modem. In various places in HowardForums, you'll see info on how to turn off EVDO and use 1X in order to get it to work as a modem. I initially did that and first got it to work that way, but then I turned back on EVDO and it still worked, at 14.4kbps (and, yes, the phone was showing "EV" so I did have EVDO service at the time). Basically, I did the equivalent of dialing up on a land line.

1) I used Bluetooth and when I was configuring it. When I went to configure the Bluetooth Mobile Phone Set Up, I set it to "Dial a specific access number". I then set it up to dial my work network as my ISP. I set the modem script as "Verizon Support (PC 5220)" which apparently is included in Mac OSX (at least for 10.4.3). I didn't seem to need to install any other modem script.

2) I wonder about the need for the MTU reduction. If you have problems with dropped connections, then try it. But I wouldn't do it unless you need to. From what I read, this is/was a problem in Verizon's DSL networks a few years ago. It isn't clear to me that this would carry over to the Verizon Wireless networks. Certainly most ISPs don't require a reduced MTU and I didn't see an explanation of why Verizon DSL was different. In my case, it is clear that this isn't needed. (If it were needed, I would have needed it if I dialed up on a land line to this ISP.)

3) The lookupd bug is completely orthogonal to the use of the cellular service to access the internet. It appears this bug was understood in late September but I don't see it listed as something that was fixed in the 10.4.3 (late Oct.). If it wasn't fixed then, I'd expect it fixed soon. See

See

As others have reported, using the Verizon "National Access" INFO, on Tiger 10.4.3, via BlueTooth on V3c (Verizon), does NOT work, does not authorize, and dumps connection. Just for fun I tried a manual dial through bluetooth setup as you described, using a phone number my DSL ISP gave me for 56K access when the DSL service is down. Got through, very slow, then got dumped. Apple's Internet Connect is now scrolling the message "disconnecting" in the menu bar, program was quit, phone is now OFF, and looks like I'll have to reboot, or process quit if I can. I used the "Verizon Support 5220" modem script. The person much earlier in this thread NEVER responded as to where they got some Verizon National Access modem script thus we can't test or answer that post, duh? I did a few hours of reading on Internet, google searches etc. Seems Verizon's "National Access" was once free or included in certain plans, but they want our money, so I'm assuming at this point it's a major reason I can't make this phone work as modem through the #777 connection. I have a basic plan and checked it online as well. Some had said earlier plans allowed for the use of just ones minutes, but I think those were all very old messages and threads. I'm willing to try other suggestions, just for fun.

UPDATE: 1-7-05 4:18pm EST
Rebooted, was able to bluetooth connect via laptop and D-Link Dongle. Then tried the access to web via the dial-up info for my DSL 56k info using "Internet Connect", again very slow, did not get dumped right away this time, but can't seem to DISCONNECT from Internet Connect button. Had to end the connection from the END button on V3c phone, and "disconnecting" is still scrolling in menu bar, and now am unable to BlueTooth connect to phone itself, says "Unable to validate device". Rebooting the last time solved this, no easy to see "process" in "Activity Monitor" to quit either. Seems this is a real mess so far. No joy here.

(Im using a PC)I have a USB Bluetooth adapter and I plugged it in and bonded with my razor. Now I can do file transfer and stuff. But I noticed that there was another option to do modem internet. So I clicked on it and the it said "connecting to bluetooth DUN connection." Then is said asked me for my username and password before it could connect to the DUN and my username was already typed in for me, but my password wasn't. Im not sure what password it is asking me for? I tried my phone number, my bluetooth password, and everythng else. What password is it asking for? Anyway, after I type in a number of passwords, a screen comes up and says "error 691: acces was denied because the username and/or password was invalid on the domain." Anyone tried this before and know what I should do?

Posted by: dcalfine

There's another thread that talks about this. I think in order for this to work you need to turn off EVDO and your username is XXX-XXX-XXXX@vzwv3c or something like that.

Here's the link. The title suggests that it works for Mac OS only, but I suspect otherwise.

butpim will not recognize your phone. just open bitpim then plug your phone in. go over to the tab that says file system, then in the window either double click the folder or click the arrow. wait for it to read your phone.

Got everything to work, there is a thread here on how to make and run an Apple Script that on OSX Tiger, lets you get past sending the password info over the 1x connection. Now able to access VZW thru BlueTooth on laptop. GREAT!

Thank you for contacting our Verizon Wireless website. We are happy to assist you with your Motorola Phone Tools question.

Even if you are not subscribed to the $15 VCast package, your handset will still use our Broadband Access connection to access Get It Now, Mobile Web and send & receive Picture and Video Messages in areas where Broadband Access is available. If we disable the ability to use Broadband Access on your account you will only be able use above features using National Access in areas where Broadband Access is not offered. You will not be able to use any of these services in areas where a Broadband signal is present. This is because the VCast enabled handsets are optimized for Broadband Access and will always try to connect to the Broadband network whenever it is present. If using a handset as a modem is your primary concern, we recommend that you consider using a non-VCast phone to meet your needs.

If you have further questions or concerns, please write to us again through www.VerizonWireless.com. We appreciate your business and thank you for choosing Verizon Wireless.

I used iSync to download & merge contacts between my Verizon Razr V3c and my laptop with Mac OSX 10.4.3. As with any translation between two even slightly different systems, there are incompatibilities. I wish I could avoid these. I expect these mostly are issues in iSync but I can't be sure. (The purpose of this message is to alert others and, I hope, alert Verizon and Apple of things that would be good to fix in future versions.)

iSync transfers the info from the Mac Address Book (sigh... I also have Mozilla address book and Microsoft address book).

1) I have two home phone numbers. On the Mac, I had just set each of those up as "home". On the V3c, there are two mobile numbers and two work numbers, but only one home number. When transfering to the phone, the second home phone overwrites the first. For now, I'm changing the second "home" to "home2" on the Mac. (iSync didn't treat "pager" as a mobile phone number.)

2) After an initial transfer to the phone, I painfully moved some phone numbers around in the speed dial. I moved my home phone to speed dial 1. Then when I later synched with iSync, I found that under my name my home phone was speed dial 144. Under speed dial, my home phone was still at #1 but it is also at #144.

3) I found that multiple email addresses didn't transfer to the phone properly. For one person, on the Mac I had a work email, home email, and other. The phone got just the home email.

4) The Mac Address Book has no concept of (1) default phone (or email or fax, etc.) or (2) speed dial. This means that updates may mess these up. It seemed that the initial transfer was done in some random order so that phone numbers for a single contact wound up at (say) speed dials 123, 97, 161, rather than (say) 100, 101, 102 in the order shown in the Mac Address Book. It seemed that the original default phone number was the lowest of the randomly assigned speed dials.

5) After synching (merging back to Address Book), I found some duplicated phone numbers in my address book.

6) I believe I had to set something special to transfer the fax numbers to the phone.

7) John Doe and John Doe, Jr. were transfered as John Doe and John Doe-1. Not ideal, but it will do.

8) I wish the Verizon phone book had nicknames. Then I could have "John Junior" for John Doe Jr. or "Mother" for "Jane Doe". (This is for voice dialing)

9) I wish the Verizon phone book would store street addresses! My Verizon Kyocera did. That's handy if you are at the post office or trying to drive somewhere and don't have your computer handy. I feel the phone book is somewhat neutered without this capability.

10) The phone's Groups have to be hand entered....

I had hoped that I could just dump my entire Address Book into my phone, but it seems there are too many problems. I may have to [SIGH] duplicate certain entries and edit them just for the phone and then put them into a separate Address Book group for the phone (and I sync only on that group). But then I don't have those random contacts (say, my wife's cousin) that I might need sometime.

Wishes:
(1) The Verizon phone book is too sparse in categories of numbers & other info. It would be good to add Pager, multiple Home numbers, different Fax numbers, etc. I like how Address Book has it, esp. with custom categories. This applies to both phone numbers and emails. The phone also should store street or postal addresses (and multiple types). It would be great if you could specify the style of the phone book (eg, "Apple Address Book", "Microsoft Address Book") and it would closely or exactly match that same style.

Verizon should be careful about speed dial numbers getting deleted from the contact and reset to a different speed dial location.

Verizon should allow nicknames.

(2) Apple Address Book should at least have the concept of default phone number, or some way to order the numbers.

(3) iSync should transfer numbers in the preferred order (both directions). It should not duplicate numbers when merging. It should not overwrite numbers (leaving the first transferred number). Pager is a mobile number.

My suggestion is to try OnSync

Very powerful and simple.

Posted by: dlgraves

Hi,

I used to have a cool little Ericsson T39m that not only did perfect zero-config iSync over Blutooth (even carried over the notes from calendar entries) but would even pair with Address Book so that when a call or SMS came in to the phone, it'd pop up on the screen. You could also send an SMS or initiate a call over BT from Address Book.app.

Now I'm in Verizon world and have my V710 (soon to be V3C) synching okay with the plist hack but can't get that Address Book pairing to work -- when I initiate pairing, AB prompts for passcode but the phone never responds.

Anyone know what BT profile handles AB pairing? I haven't seen anyone talking about this feature anywhere, it's pretty f'ing cool...

cheers

I'm having some trouble. Bluetooth syncing works great, but to use BitPim and a seem editor I found, I need a USB cable. I've tried two different cables, each time, my computer will not recognize the phone. What can be done? I have a V3c and am running 10.4. I have USB 2.0.

I have the exact same problem. Bluetooth works perfectly but bitpim is a no go. I d/l'd the latest verion from VersionTracker.com and can't get it to recognize my phone on my iBook or Dual 1.8 G5....both are running Tiger 10.3.4. I'm using the USB cable that came with my Canon digital camera - it just won't recognize the phone at all. Any thoughts?

I'm beginning to think it's the cable I'm using though, because the phone won't charge off any of my USB ports. I just get an "Unable to Charge" message. I wonder if a different cable from Radio Shack would solve the problem?

Posted by: jmass21

i am running 10.4 on a pb g4. i have sync'd my v3c over bt w/o any problem. there was a slight problem i encountered when using bitpim. the remedy i found (whether true or not) was to set the phone up for data calls only. everything else that i tried would not work. the phone would not be recognized by bitpim. in regards to the cable issue, the fact that it says "unable to charge" should be an indication that the phone is receiving a signal from the computer, the computer simply does not have the correct drivers to limit the charge on the phone. dont waste your money on another cable.

Posted by: dcalfine

I thought it was the cable too, but then I tried it with a different cable and still no go.

Posted by: gcvt

Where can I find the driver I need to be able to charge my phone? Couldn't find it by searching.

Posted by: jdwink18

dcalfine,

bitpim will not recognize your V3c, but it will still read the phone.

1. make sure you have the latest version (.8.05-1) in the prefs set the port to auto and select other cdma phone

2. start bitpim then plug in your phone

3. at the top of bitpim click the filesystem tab, then on the left you'll see a little folder, double click it and wait for it to read the phone. ( if you look in the bottom left corner you'll see it says busy, when its done your file system will pop up)

4. now if you want to change the pict. when the flip is open on your phone, click on the tab in the file system that says mobile. it should say verizon.gif just take the pict you have (96 x 80 and rename it verizon.gif) and just drag it in the box and it should overwrite it.

5. if you want to change the start up and shut down screens, double click the motorola tab, then double click the shared tab, then highlight the picture tab. now drag you picts. in there (176 x 220 and renamed customer_closing.gif and customer_opening.gif)

6. although you cant see anything in the motorola file the picts. will still overwrite the ones that are in there. close bitpim, unplug phone, and restart phone. done

Posted by: jdwink18

i think its something to do with the verizon cdma and mac. my v3c doesnt charge on my powerbook but it will on my windows desktop at home. but if you plug in a non-verizon gsm razr it will charge ( tried it with a buddies ) wierd huh.

All the settings are set correctly, but I still get nothing. Here's a pic. I get the same thing weather my phone is plugged in or not.

Posted by: jdwink18

dcalfine, go up to view the click on file system. the view filesystem has to checked or the tab wont show up.

ps how did you get that pict up there i can never get mine to show up

Posted by: dcalfine

o sweet! Thanks so much! That was clearly an oversight of mine. Thank for your patience in getting me to get this.

no prob, im not super great at this stuff, but i help when i can

Posted by: dcalfine

o, and if you have the pic on a web server put it like this: (img)http://www.URL.com/image.jpg(/url)

where the ()s are, change them with square brackets.

Posted by: dcalfine

is there a way for me to change the startup and shutdown towns? And how about skins, can I make my own?

Posted by: jdwink18

do you have to have a host like photobucket or something

Posted by: dcalfine

no, I have .Mac. It's a service of Apple. It's $99 a year, but I highly recommend it.

what exactly happens. if your phone is paired w/ your comp (which it must be since youve sync'd it) than it should work.

Just to confirm, when you're syncing, you're doing so via Bluetooth, right? Did you try powering your phone off and back on?

Go into System Prefs > Bluetooth > click on your device - does the bottom window show: Device Services: Headset Voice Gateway, Handsfree Voice Gateway, OBEX File Transfer, Dial-Up Networking Gateway?

Posted by: dchadwick

Not sure if anybody's noticed, but the list of iSync's supported devices now includes the V3c. Assume this is part of the 10.4.4 update which came out yesterday. I also assume this update hosed the "customized" version of iSync I downloaded from this thread. Hopefully official iSync support will be more consistent than the results a lot of us are seeing. I'll check it later when I get home, and report back.

I have tried powering my phone down and then back up
and...
Yes...i am using bluetooth to sync and the bluetooth prefs say all of that...under that it says
Paired:Yes
Configured:Yes
Favorite:Yes
Connected:No
Serial Port:Yes

when it is syncing the connection changes to yes but if i were to turn the bluetooth on on my phone and then look at the connection it says that it is not connected. the only way it says that it is connected is solely when it is syncing.

?? I don't see the V3C on this page . . . just the V3, which has been listed here for a few months. Did they put it on and then take it off after realizing they made an error? I did do a system update and it showed sync updates in the Mac OSX update. I duplicated my iSync app first, then did the system update. The two iSync files look identical, both say created 3/22/05, but the new one says modified today and last opened today. Versions on both are 2.1.1. I still get the same sync functionality (works great with contacts, seizes when I try to sync calendars).

Does anyone know if it's possible to copy ical files into some magical directory using Bitpim to move calendars from my powerbook to my razr?

Having a problem transfering jpg to V3c from Mac via bluetooth.
Used browse device etc...just as I did when I transfered ringtone. The transfer supposedly took place successfully but the image is not in My Pix file on phone. What could I be doing wrong?
Possibly my image is too large have read in this forum it should be 176x220 or 176x184 (bites?) without PhotoShop but having iPhoto how can I get this correct ratio? Using preview I've taken the quality of photo down to 212 kbs but after transfer the photo isn't in phone.

Posted by: Zelf24

Just wanted to add that I updated to 10.4.4 today, and my V3c was still recognized by iSync. Apparently it kept the "customized" list after all.

Oh, crap -- my bad. Sorry for the false alarm, people. I guess I was so eager to see official V3c support that I read it too quickly. As you say, the 10.4.4 system update doesn't seem to touch iSync anyway -- I still have version 2.1.1 as I did before.

176 x 220 are the dimensions in pixels, not the file size. Where did you coopy your image to (in which folder)? The photos that we take with our phone are right around 212 kb or even larger, so I don't think file size is your problem.

I downloaded my picture via bluetooth to the PICTURE FILE (folder) on the phone. The download was declared successful however there was no sign of my picture in the memory of the phone.
The picture in question was taken by my digital camera and originally was 3 megabites in size. Through the preview option on my Mac I used the quality slider to reduce the bite size of the image.
Now you tell me that it's pixel size and not bite size that needs shrinking.
How do I reduce pixel size to needed ratio if I don't have PhotoShop and only iPhoto?
One way or another, size (bite or pixel or both) seems to be the problem.
Thank you for your assitance.

176x220 at 72ppi. You can do this in Photoshop and iPhoto. In Photoshop, simply use a Fixed Aspect Ratio of 176x220 for the marquee tool. You can reduce the resolution/pixels under image size. Have patience and you will be a pro in no time.

Thanks fincher...but I don't have Photoshop how would I do this in iPhoto?

Posted by: fincher

1. Constrain = Custom at 176x220. You may need to "contrain as portrait."
2. Pull the non-ghosted preview to the size you like. Use the Hand tool to position as desired, then Crop.
3. File>Export>Scale images no larger than: 176x220. Be sure "Use extension" is checked. You can use JPG as the format if the original is not in JPG. You can view your results and get details in the Preview application.

This should work. Good luck!

I did just this and then saved the image as a '.jpg' and also saved a '.gif'. When I copy it into "my pix" folder via BitPim, it seems to copy fine but when I go to access it on the phone it shows up as a white box with an "x". Am I doing something wrong?

Also, i do this with ringtones as well and they also seem to copy but are no where to be found on the phone. Strange. Any idea's?

Thanks!

Make sure the image is RGB. Try that.

Actually, my OS X 10.4.4 update did overwrite the iSync MetaClasses.plist, perhaps because I did the Combo updater, not sure. I didn't think to back it up.

Anyway, I put together a iSync phone plugin that can be dropped in your Library: http://www.briantoth.com/razr_v3c/, free of course.

Seems to work just fine on my PowerBook.

Interesting. The 10.4.4 Update did not touch mine.
