The Official RAZR V3c and Mac Thread (iSync, DUN, BT, etc.)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi-

Been looking in a lot of threads here and cant find the answer to a simple question. Is DUN possible on a Macintosh with the new firmware update for the V3c?

Looking to upgrade in a couple of days and need to be sure that I can use DUN with my PowerBook.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Listen, i don't have BT at the moment so i'm connecting my V3c via USB cable. I'm using BitPim and I can see the phone and contents under the filesystem tab but when i copy a ringtone or even an image, they copy but I can't access on the phone. Any clues?

I never could get ringtones, images or video to show up on the phone using Bitpim. Maybe i was doing something wrong. But anyway, the minute I got my D-Link BT module, I plugged it in and the rest was very easy. Money well spent.

That's correct, I believe. I have the .02 firmware because that's what my phone came with, and I'm easily moving files back and forth between Mac and V3c over BT. Seems like it would be worthwhile to borrow a PC for a while to get this done.

Thanks for all the great information in this thread. It took me a while, but I read it from start to finish because my old phone is starting to fail and I am considering the RAZR V3c. I've had a Kyocera 7135 for 3 years with Verizon, and rely heavily on iSync with .mac to go between my office desktop G4, a pb G4 and my palm OS equipped phone. I stopped in the Verizon store today and was directed to the Treo 650, but I'm not wedded to sticking with a Palm OS device. I looked also at the Motorola e815, and the RAZR V3c. After reading the discussion here I was wondering if:
1) with the new version of V3c software that disables OBEX, is the ability to use iSync also affected, or just the ability to upload pics and ringtones to the phone via bluetooth? That is, does your iSync hack that adds V3c to the phone list still work with the new V3c software? or would I need to flash it and use the 02 version for this to work.
2) Someone mentioned a bug that caused calendar syncing problems after 60 events. I have way more than 60 calendar entries that I would want to move onto the phone. Is this bug for real, and if so, is it a dealbreaker?

Other than that, any other comments on RAZR vs. e815 vs. Treo 650 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hi everyone, quick questions-
1. does the rzr v3i use the sim memory for messages?
2. does it work well (can it save messages) using blue phone elite?
3. when will the new moto v3x be availabe? http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/mobile...3940p-1,00.htm?

m planning to get the v3i asap, so pls answer asap. thanks sorry for the rush. laptop's about to lose charge. thanks! will check later and hope to get answers...

Posted by: darrenph1

Any mac users have an alltel flashed phone (yes I know you need a pc to do this) but wondering if the connectivity is the same (bitpim, obex, etc) Thanks!

Posted by: photoeditor

monds -- you're in the wrong place. The v3c, the subject of this forum, is CDMA, along with everything else Verizon. I am pretty sure everything you're talking about is GSM. Try forums for GSM service providers and products.

Posted by: ayn

My gf got the pink v3c with .03 fw, she paired it with her iBook and sent me these screenshots, looks like DUN is enabled... OBEX File Transfer isn't shown under Device Services, but Bluetooth File Transfer and Bluetooh File Exchange were listed under the Sharing tab... so I'm a little confused... I thought those require OBEX... I guess OBEX isn't required to transfer file from the laptop to the phone?? Or maybe OS X shows all sharing options regardless of BT capabilities?

anyway, here are the screenshots:

Posted by: k.double

the second screenshot displays OSX's internal bluetooth capabilities, not the bluetooth capabilities of the phone. That sharing pane is simply a way to configure the internal bluetooth host adapter of the mac machine and has nothing to do with external devices.

Also, looks like the pink v3c has disabled obex.

Posted by: ayn

Thanks, that's what I thought, I guess I will have to flash .02 on it afterall, no biggie...

Posted by: gmgrant

Hi-

If I get a new V3c with the new firmwaare, can I still do DUN?
Dont care to much about OBEX.

Thanks.

Yes, DUN via BT seems to be enabled on .03, but I haven't tried using it so don't know for sure...

and you would be dead wrong, the v3i is an improved version of the v3, and it's GSM, not CDMA like the v3c... please check Mot's website if in doubt...

Just a quick note no problem transferring photos taken from a Telus V3c phone to an iMac via Bluetooth. It worked straight from the box no hacking was needed.

Is it just me or has this Mac thread gone a little stale? I see all the progress being made with those that run Windows, and this thread seems to just sputter around. I can't help but be envious. I realize we are at a disadvantage- not having programs such as P2KCommander, and PST, but has anyone tried to delve anymore into modding their V3c on their Mac? I would love to be able to seem edit, but so far Moto4lin hasn't been the answer. I can get it to connect, but thats as far as it will go. I can't read the filesystem, or load any seems. Surely someone out there will help out the Mac faithful!

Posted by: eclipse525

Here's something.... I just plugged my phone in to charge this morning and I'm getting an error message "Unauthorized Charger". What the hell, I've been using it this whole time and it's been fine. Anybody have an idea why this is happening?

For anyone having problems with the V3c and syncing calendars, here is what I got from Motorola:

We do apologize for the inconvenience, but unfortunately the Razr V3c will not support the Calendar Synchronization with any software.

Apologizing once again...

I responded with:

Wow, that's amazing! Will it be fixed? If not, do you offer a refund or rebate to users? As I said, when I bought a new phone, it was specifically because of the calendar synch options provided, so I am dismayed that my RAZR (which I love in every other respect) won't provide that functionality.

and I got:

We do apologize for the inconvenience, but in this case we suggest you to get in contact with your phone service provider back for further information.

Posted by: xmltok

say what? my razr syncs with ical fine.

If you guys want to start flashing and modding and all that I would recommend installing VPC and giving that a shot. It should work (slowly) for running PST and P2K Commander.

Supposedly there is a known bug with the V3c where the first time you hit over 60 entries in your calendar, it permanently corrupts something and prohibits the ability to sync your calendar. When I try now (after having tried to sync over 60 events), I get a message saying "The connection was lost while sending some changes to the device. Device "Razr" synchronization failed".

Others have reported the same problem in this and other threads on this forum and have probably better explained it than I have here. I picked up the info about the bug on this thread, but Motorola didn't mention it specifically when I corresponded with them.

Posted by: ayn

This 60 entires limit for calendar thing is braindead, anyone who actually uses iCal would definitely have more than 60 entries...

Posted by: stealthboy

By default should I be able to charge my RAZR V3c when plugged in via USB to my PowerBook? I can use bitpim to do stuff over USB cable, and I can send/get files via bluetooth, but when I plug in the USB cable, it doesn't charge the phone.

Not a big deal, but just wondering if I'm missing something obvious...

Thanks!

this is so late in the thread BUT there is no Plugins folder within "Contents". Any clues why i wouldn't have one?

it's probably because you're running isync 1.5 not isync 2.1.1

to run 2.1.1 you need to be running tiger

i haven't seen anything on how to add a razr to isync 1.5 yet

I can't charge via my USB cable either . . . I'm not sure if it's the type of cable or what. I know I read elsewhere that some people got this to work (and others did not) so I'm guessing that there is a better cable out there somewhere, rather than the $5-off-of-eBay model that I'm using.

I've had a similar experience with my v3c. It won't charge on a G4 PB, a G3 iB, or either of my two G4 iB. (Calls to both Verizon and Motorola resulted in the response "Sorry we don't support Macs." Yeah, but how about STANDARDS????)

I just got a mac mini and it charges fine via USB. It would be really nice for me not to have to haul a charger on travel (I travel 90%), but oh well...

Also, BT file xfer and iSync work fine (iSync needed the v3c config mentioned earlier in this
thread.).

(Good forum here, thanks to all who contribute.)

Yup. That's it. I'm still on 10.3.9 and my iSync is 1.5.

Is there a way to copy mp3 and pictures without having to upgrade to Tiger?

If you are running the 02 version SW you can pair your phone using bluetooth to your powerbook and then browse the device and drag n drop mp3s and pictures to your phone. Unfortunately you will not be able to sync contacts and ical.

Posted by: xmltok

FWIW I have synced up my class and work and a public astronomy calendars (something for every day of the year) to the razr and I have not hit the calendar bug.

Sorry but you lost me. What is "02 version SW". Second i'm on a iMac not Powerbook but i'm sure that doesn't make a difference. Third, I have made the connection/pairing with my computers BT and the phone. What app can I use to access the phones folders (audio, pictures, etc.).

click the bluetooth icon on the menu bar and choose browse device

"02 version software" is what's installed on the phone. The software version that ends in ".02" has Bluetooth transfer of files enabled, whereas the new version ending in ".03" does not.

To see your software version on the V3C, go to:
Settings and Tools >> System >> Device Info >> Other Information >> S/W Version

It's also printed on the label underneath the battery (though that won't be accurate if your s/w has been updated).

Asssuming you have the .02 software, you should be able to move audio and video to and from the phone over bluetooth. Instructions are in this thread.

I noticed that iSync has a window of time for which it sync events. It won't sync all your events, but only the next one, two weeks. It's an option under the iSync settings for the phone... So, I wonder if it's 60 events total, or just 60 for that one sync that you are performing...

Hi all- I just found this forum this afternoon and have been reading until my eyes are crossed!

Can someone tell me if it's possible to sync a V3c back and forth with BOTH a mac and a PC? I've got a PC at work and a mac at home and I'd like to be able to transfer the calendar and contacts back and forth between Outlook 2003 and iCal, Address Book and Mail.

Is this possible?

Thanks!

got everything setup per the multitude of posts here and am able to send faxes via BT on my V3C. However, I can't get it to receive faxes. A call co mes in, the phone rings, but my mac won't answer it automatically or manually via the "answer now" in the modem status icon. I've read where others have no problem sending and receiving. Any help would be great.

If my 15" Alum. PB is on and I plug the USB into the phone, I get a beep, but no indication of charging. If I put my Mac to sleep and plug it in, then I see the Unauthorized Charger message and my Mac wakes up.

I think this is what Verizon and/or Motorola mean by they "Don't support Macs". The question is what signal are they getting to distinguish the Mac from other "authorized" chargers.

It may not be that there is something in the phone that says "We don't support Macs". It could be that the USB driver on the Mac doesn't respond properly to a request from the phone. There's a class of USB devices that are chargers. Perhaps the Mac doesn't identify itself as a charger device to the phone or doesn't announce (or perhaps doesn't have) the capabilities required by the phone. (See http://www.usb.org/developers/devclass_docs/pdcv10.pdf )

This may be a good thing to figure out how to fix via a seem edit, or to get Apple to change their USB handling. But it is going to take a lot more technical knowledge of the USB protocols and what is required by the phone and announced by the Mac in terms of the Mac being a charger.

MTv3c, that is an excellent post, with great insight. I, too, own a 15" Aluminum PowerBook and wish that it would be able to charge my V3c as well. Perhaps your post will stir some more thoughts about the issue!

just so you know i posted this on the last page. its wierd but when you try to charge your verison cdma v3c it doesnt charge, as you all know. but when you plug in a gsm v3, t-mobile, cingular, ect., it will charge. wierd but thats what happens on my PB

I-ve been following the charging thread...in view of the last several posts,
any ideas why my v3c charges from my Mac mini, but not from my pb15g4 or any of the ibooks in my house? The same OS is on all (10.4.4).

The USB ports on the PowerBook are not full-power ports (despite what they say in System Profiler). They are like the ports on the back of the Apple keyboard. My USB-bus powered external hard drive does not work from my PowerBook either, but works from any desktop computer.

Posted by: seanb

in theory, I should be able to use an ipod charger brick with a USB to USB mini and charge my V3C, right? I tried it, and it beeps but doesn't actually seem to charge. The output voltages seem to be the same on both chargers...

Posted by: kmaninaustin

I paired my friends Sprint VC3? to my Powerbook and downloaded an image. I had my Verizon VC3 (OBEX disabled) paired already and couldn't download or upload, but could see the files.

After pairing with his phone & deleting his profile, with the same name "Motorola Phone" my phone now shows OBEX File Transfer, I've uploaded videos and mp3's.

Sweet and easy.

As far as syncing, no dice with OS X 10.4.4 & iSync 2.1.1

Maybe I'll try the modified iSync someone posted.

Now it's time to find out how to use Vcast EVDO via bluetooth to connect to the net at $15 a month. Where there's a will there's a way.

Posted by: LesterBeMe

Hello, all. I apologize if any of this is repetitive.

I am thrilled to find a forum about my phone! After reading quite a bit of the 30 pages, however, I am unclear. Has anyone actually had SUCCESS with syncing their phone to their iCal?

I purchased the v3C (pink!!) 13 days from Verizon (USA).
My goal is to sync iCal to the phone.

I use a G4 Powerbook, Mac OSX 10.4.5, the Bluetooth USB D-Link (DBT120), isync 2.1.1 and iCal 2.0.3

My bluetooth added the phone in the set up assistant, but isync wouldn't, even with a USB cable.

First, I tried to use Brian Toth's plug-in. isync recognized my phone, hooray, and looked as if it was working, but at the end, the sync failed

"Monday, February 20, 2006 9:40 AM
The connection was lost while sending some changes to the device.
Device "Motorola Phone" synchronization failed"

I removed the phone, did a hard shut down of both devices, added the phone again. I limited it to 1 week of events. Still, no dice. I do have lots of old to do events, and those might be clogging up the system, don't know.

***Is there a way to make this plug-in work?

OR

***Has anyone had success with another plug-in, such as the one offered by nova media? I read in this article which states that this particular plug-in supports isync for the razr:
http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/0...media/index.php

but on the site,
http://www.novamedia.de/sync/
my phone is not listed.

I have until tomorrow night to return the phone, but I would rather not. I love it, and if all else fails, I could buy a small palm pilot (z3) to replace my Palm IIIc, which I currently use. It seems ridiculous to have 2 devices when one is possible.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Leslie

i finally (after weeks and weeks of trying to decide) flashed my vzw to the alltel flash. i will never look back! full bluetooth OPP included, and no problem (so far, and i have resynced several times) syncing my address book (and i have over 100 appointments a month) with the built in moto calandar. (it appears to me that the bug is in the vzw software). with the issues of moble web and gin both working on the alltel flash, there is no reason not to do it....(except for warranty of course)

I had a weird problem with a sync failed message too. I solved this by syncing contacts with onsync (another application) and only syncing calendarw with isync. I have no idea why this matters, but it does. I also like how onsync handles it (sort of a manual sync) whereas with calendar it doesn't matter much to me. Try it!

Did you try this with a verizon v3c?

Leslie

Posted by: uicandrew

hey lester. when the nova v3c syncing software first came out, it did support the v3c. more recently, they updated the software by charging $10 and they also REMOVED the v3c support. talk about a downgrade!

i wrote to them and they said that they discontinued support. and i got it to work with isync and ical. unfortunately, i never saved the program (i figured it would be free forever) and i also have since wiped the hard drive clean. your best bet would be to try to find someone with version 1.0 of the nova software. good luck

Posted by: LesterBeMe

what a bummer. i wouldn't know where to begin looking for the early version.

I did find a link to another site with a plug-in

http://www.megaupload.com/de/?d=LTQRDWIY

It's in German. I can't figure out where the download button is, or if it's even a legit plugin for my phone

I shortened my music with itunes and then burned them to a cd and imported that. however, after doing this it changed the files from mp3 to m4a. since i tried sending them to my phone and didnt work, i take it razrs dont accept m4a files. How can i shorten and import the songs while keeping them mp3?!

HELP!

Posted by: fincher

Burn to a CD in AIFF format. This will remove the DRM from the songs. Re-import the song(s) back to iTunes in mp3 format. Most likely you will lose the CD track names which you can manually enter. There may be better methods but works for me.

Posted by: jdwink18

or you can take that burnt cd just pop it in then use audacity to shorten and export as mp3 and send it to phone. i use it and it take me about 2 min to cut a song once i figure out which 1 i want. just google audacity (its free)

Any ideas for ring vibrate functionality for macs?

Posted by: RazorWriter

Forgive me if it's already been asked here, but I cannot find this specific information in any thread...

With any of the firmware for the V3c (or e815) that's "out there", can bluetooth DUN be enabled, AND does it utilize the full "broadband" speeds that Verizon offers with their $60/mo unlimited data plan.. (where available) ?

Has anybody got this to work, using the bluetooth connection to get Internet access on their Powerbook? And... how about the Motorola e815? Is the same thing possible? My dad's getting that phone right now, as well as a MacBook Pro, because of my recommendation for this purpose, and I'm hoping I haven't led him down the wrong path - I've only ever used a Treo with bluetooth DUN.
I realize I will have to help him hack/flash the phone settings (thanks Verizon!) but I want to make sure it is possible at least, or whether I should recommend him a different phone.

Well I have a 815 and all worked fine until the latest firmware upgrade, was hoping a fix to make DUN work with the new verizon firmware would be out by now, any mac users want to help out?

you have to use SEEM edit to do this. and you can't do this on a mac. you'll need a pc. you also cannot do this by using virtual pc beacuse moto phones won't work with virtual pc.

yea the DUN will work with the V3c and powerbooks, including the new macbook duo. however, the new broadband access is yet unavailable for free. when you use the hack (which avail. some where on this thread), you'll be on their 1x network and not the EVDO.

i've noticed that the v3c have now dropped to $100 online with 2 year renewal. i was just wondering, have they changed the software, or will i still be able to enable obex on my powerbook? just curious because they are advertising it as the "vcast razr" and i wasn't sure if they have changed it from the original (like they did with the samsung a950 for example). just want to make sure that if i get a razr, i can still enable obex on my mac. so if someone could let me know, that'd be great.

Posted by: billthompson80

I just got my RAZR last friday and it still has the version .03 firmware on it which eliminates the OBEX, so as far as I know, they haven't made any updates to this and I would imagine they aren't going re-enable it. It looks like your only option is to get ahold of the .02 firmware and the install tools and do it yourself if you need OBEX.

On a side note though....when I went into the Verizon store to transfer my phone book, I asked the tech person why the time on my phone would "freeze" or "lag" and she said they were going to be releasing a new firmware upgrade to fix this (she said they had released one prior, but it had to be recalled or something due to some issues). She didn't give me an exact date when this would be though. Maybe someone else on here knows something about this.

Has anyone used VirtualPC and MultiFlashFlex.exe and been able to apply the .02 firmware? Or do i need to find a friend with a Real PC to help me?

An update for Mac Users with the V3C and the new Alltel flash 00.R. Same tricks work except GIN. Address-book Still syncs after you back up, sync, replace, and sync again and charging works as i no longer get unauthorized charger from my Dual 1ghz g4 Powermac.

have you tried this on a powerbook?

can you give detailed instructions on how you made it work? a lot of mac users for a long time have been wanting the capability to change their v3c over their mac through the usb cable.

Posted by: Dualyg4

I followed the exact same process as with other Alltel Flashes just with a newer firmware 00.R. I can test this on a 15inch G4 powerbook 1.67 tommrow. I will post if it charges then.

I'm trying to use BitPim mostly to get pictures that I take off my V3c. I have .03 firmware, so OBEX is disabled. Anyway, I'm able to connect to my phone and view the filesystem on my Mac with BitPim, but some of the folders show up empty. The mobile folder (containing verizon.gif) shows up fine, and I was able to change verizon.gif with no problem. However, when I click on the folders in motorola/shared (pictures, ringtone, audio, etc) they show up as empty. However, on my PC using BitPim, I can see the things in those folders just fine and transfer them.

I'd really like to be able to do everything on my Mac, as I don't use my PC normally, and it's a pain to hook a monitor, keyboard, etc. up to it just to use it for one little thing. Has anyone seen this problem on their Mac, and do you know of a solution?

Posted by: Dualyg4

The New 00.R Alltel flash ALLOWS for a powerbook 1.67ghz to CHARGE a razr v3c.

This is KNOWN to work on the Powerbook with a 1440X900 screen 15inch and the previous 15inch model. Others are untested

This is an issue with Bitpim itself yes the PC verison can see it but the phone cannot nor can the mac verison. You need to use p2kcommander to make new folders or add files using a usb interface.

Bitpim only allows for the overwrite of an existing file.

Still no developments for mac users who want two way loading from V3 using a USB cable? isync puts addresses on the phone (in a wierd way) but there is still nothing that works in the other direction?

I use OnSync and you have the choice of BT or USB. Its better than iSync for Contacts.

Posted by: PeterKG

For those of you who have purchased an Intel iMac or a Macbook Pro, the hack to be able to sync your V3c with iSync doesn't work. It worked with no problem on my Powerbook, but installing the hack on my Macbook Pro has been a failure. OnSync does work though. Let me know if I am wrong though, and you have been able to get it to work.

Posted by: tylerwest

Ok, I skimmed the whole damn thread. Someone shoot me strait, no bs.

I just bought a verizon razr v3c. I have a 933mhz ibook without bluetooth. I want to be able to transfer files too and from my phone (pictures, mainly) via a usb cable. I could care less about calendars or address book.

Am I totally screwed?

I thought I would just be able to plug the phone in using a usb cable and have iphoto import the pictures off the phone.

Posted by: inkhead

yes.

1 ) The verizon razr won't allow you to transfer ringtones, and wallpapers to the computer.

Why do you need this feature? (no offense) but your ibook is so slow that it's ACTUALLY FASTER for you to just email yourself any ringtones or pictures you want on your phone. How many do you want to transfer? Even if you had say 20 wallpapers, 15 ringtones to put on your phone, it's easy.

Just email yourphonenumberwithareacode@vzwpix.com, you can use mail.app to even attach up to 2 pictures at a time.. So sending 10 message to your phone (would get you 20 wallpapers), You can email .mp3, or mp3s that you change the extension to .mid on .. (must be short clips) to your phone with that email address to use as ringers (and yes .mp3 works fine to email for me on verizon)

There is one application for mac called "data pilot" which lets you connect to it with the USB data cable and copy contacts, and images, but of course not ringtones... AND this app IS HELLA slow.. I know because I bought it.

I don't know why you want to transfer files from the computer over any method rather than sending emails to your phone. You can buy a data cable for $30-40, or you can simply send free message to your cellphone to get your ringers and pictures on there.

I have a macbook pro, and a powerbook g4, i bought the verizon "office connection" kit which is just a mini-usb cable from verizon for the v3c. I use it for ev-do high speed broadband connection... (bluetooth is too slow)

Currently for mac there are no apps to connect the phone and transfer ringers or wallpapers... But like i said... Just email them to yourself...

If you want to get pictures off the phone, save your email address under your contact name so add (you@yourdomain.com) then you can quickly do a new picture message and have it send to your computer without typing in your email everytime...

I have the broadband access plan for e815, but I am having DUN problems. If I don't update a web page ever minute or so, the connection drops.

I just wanted to give a big thanks to the folks who started this thread and those who've kept it going.

I got a Verizon Razr V3c 2 days ago. It came loaded with .03 firmware. The crippled OBEX and Verizon branding everywhere annoyed me to no end. Thanks to the .02 thread I was able to flash my phone down to .02 on a PC and thanks to this thread I can easily transfer MP3 ringtones and JPEG/GIF wallpaper back and forth through bluetooth (running OS 10.4.5 on an iMac) and download my contacts to my Mac address book w/ iSync.

Whenever iSync gets to the point where it's starting to push data back to the phone it fails with an error: The connection was lost while sending some changes to the device. Device "razr" synchronization failed

My iCal calendar is not loaded with events, about 30. The calendar on the phone is completely empty. Have tried syncing just calendars with iSync and have the same results. I'm sure somebody will figure this out eventually. I really just wanted to say thanks again.

Posted by: MyosinV

Using the modified iSync, both contacts and calendars sync with one exception: alarms set in iCal are not set on the RAZR.

Any ideas?

Does Bitpim run more stable on the Mac or Linux?
I've been contemplating testing them out to see if there is a difference.

Are there any more apps for Mac or Linux to connect to the phones?

Silverstone,

I was able to Sync my Address book and iCal with my new RAZR V3c, but when I try to 'browse' the device I get 'Device does not have the neccessary services'....What does that mean?

What version software do you have? This .03 is neutered big time. Can't do **** but swap contacts.

Read the thread starting around page 12 - 13.

Phones that have the new .03 software are crippled. No free file transfer. VZW wants you to pay for it.

First I have to say thanks to this board for everything. I got my RAZR this week and with the help of all the great threads here, I got it flashed, skinned and customized to my hearts content. Anyone who can't figure phone hacking out after reading this forum has some mental deficits because it's all so plainly obvious.

I'd like to give somethink back to the community in the form of a short tutorial on RAZR V3c video conversion for the Mac OS X users out there. Note: I have an Alltel-flashed RAZR and have no idea if this works with the Verizon flash.

1. Go to http://homepage.mac.com/major4/download.html Download and install FFmpegX as described there. You will need to follow their instructions on installation exactly otherwise FFmpegX will not work. (There are pictures, it's not hard.)

2. Once you have FFmpegX installed, drag the video file you want to convert into the source field.

3. I've attached a zip file containing a preset for FFmpegX that will output a pretty good quality file. (Had to zip it since I couldn't upload a .ffx file to the board.) Load this preset file. You can play around with the audio and video settings if you know what you're doing but otherwise just hit the Encode button and wait as the video is converted.

This preset file will generate an mpeg4 movie at 176x144, 30kbps, 15fps with AAC encoded audio at 32kbps, 12k Hz. The quality was quite good and a Family Guy episode that I converted from a DivX file was 10.4 MB. I'm sure you could reduce this file size with some more tweaks to the settings but I was satisfied with the quality.

4. Bluetooth your newly created file over to your RAZR and enjoy!

I went to my buddy's place again and put some custom skins on the phone with P2kCommander. One skin crashed my phone (the SwanZep skin to be exact.) The phone would not reboot and just hung at the Verizon screen. Since I was at my place and surrounded only by Macs, I couldn't easily run P2kCommander. The phone wouldn't even get to a point in the boot sequence where it was recognized as a USB device.

I didn't want to be without a phone for the rest of the day so I tried just about everything. Here's how to fix this situation without a PC.

1. Remove the battery.

2. Plug the phone in via USB and wait for the "Cannot Charge Battery" screen to show up.

3. Run Bitpim and overwrite the bad skin with one of the skins from the Verizon filesystem.

4. Reboot the phone. If all goes properly, the phone will boot properly and everything will be fine.

I'm having the exact same problem as described here. I even tried turning off contacts sync and I still get this message with no calendar syncing. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hey I've read on how simple it is to do OBEX on a V3c- problem is, my G5 doesn't detect OBEX on my mom's pink V3c after successfully pairing it. It shows only handset capabilities + DUN. It simply says that the phone doesn't have the services to browse it (when I select Browse device). Could someone please correct me if I'm doing something wrong or a solution? Thanks.

Can you charge your v3c on your mac?
What can you do with bitpim other then change the verizon.gif and browse the shared folder? I didnt know you could add/ change skins?

I would delete the isync prefs, and load the modded version of iSync.. where you replace the package contents. really easy.

Posted by: Mikey_

anyone know why I can't delete my audio file / ring tone?

Posted by: gawilson@tcia.n

Copied your info about the razr in below the e815 info, saved it and tried several times to get it work but iSync still doesn't appear in the options. the internet option is there but no iSync.
i can and could transfer music and pic's to the phone but can't transfer anythign from the phone: i think this is us cellular's deal here (they want us to use easy edge and have to pay for everything). also, they aren't internet capable so even though in the setup it says i can use the phone as a modem, it still won't connect.
i have a mac g4 and a razr V3c with the most updated features in tiger and iSync. this is especially frustrating since i previously had been sold a V710 and told it would do things w/bluetooth and was essentially useless! they swapped me a razr but....i can't sync and can't get anything off the phone at all. i wish hackers would get in here and help us all out.

I would like to be able to charge the phone using the Mac (OS10.4.5) usb port. When I connect a data cable, I get an unauthorized charger or nothing but a beep on the phone. It looks like Motorola has drivers for the PC to fix this but not for Mac.

I am able to sync contacts and calendar using isync and a software patch I found, but I am not able to charge....

1. No

2. You cannot add skins but you can overwrite them. I downloaded the skin I wanted to replace the bad one with, renamed the files so the file names matched exactly and then used the overwrite command to replace them.

u can't charge the v3c on a mac. there's a voltage difference that is taken care of with the PC drivers, but there are no drivers or software that will fix the voltage use with the mac and v3c.

Are you on the Verizon or the Alltel flash? I don't have the Verizon flash, so I can't help you but someone else sure can. You don't have to have your phone plugged in via USB to do this. In fact, you should probably try this without your phone plugged into your computer.

If you're on Alltel, go to Main Menu -> Settings -> Connection -> Bluetooth Link -> Setup. In the Setup menu, set Power to On. If you want, you can edit the Name field to change the name of your phone so it'll be personalized (1000% optional). Then select the Find Me option.

You now have 60 seconds to pair your Mac and your phone. From the Bluetooth menu at the top of your screen (a stylized letter B), select Setup Bluetooth Device. Then follow the wizard to pair your phone. It'll involve entering some keys on your computer and then entering the same keys on your phone. Once their paired, you can use the Bluetooth menu on the Mac to browse the phone and send files to the phone.

Yes on your computer! This is the icon you click on to bring up the menu. ->

Make sure that your Bluetooth is turned on or you can open your Applications folder, find the Utilities sub-folder and run the Bluetooth Setup Assistant. If you run this application and your Bluetooth is turned off, it will prompt you to turn it on. Keep the phone unplugged from the USB port too.

You also didn't answer my question as to whether you were using the Verizon or Alltel flash.

So, just to clarify: anyone with the .3 software will be unable to use any of the above hacks to get iSync to work, right? I've tried everything with no luck, and I think it's because some folks are getting the phone with .2 while others are getting .3.

Thanks!

And that's a good question...my phone was bought for me on ebay by a friend....it was believed to be a Verizon phone...but when I brought it in the Verizon to switch it over, they said it was an unlocked cingular phone...but it still works for my carrier....so I don't know what it is :-P this is what Ebay does to me...it confuses me lolol.

Look a few posts up in this thread and I posted a whole guide on video conversion with a Mac for the V3c. I've found through trial and error that mpeg4 format at 176x144, 30kbps, 15fps with AAC encoded audio is the best way to go. You can improve the bitrates but the file begins to bloat and you only have about 30MB of memory to play with.

Pictures should be 176x220 If you need a good program to resize pics, google and download iZoom.

Q is pretty sweet. I use it to run Ubuntu on my iBook. Haven't tried XP but seeing that you can't use most of the hacking progs under VPC due to driver issues, I don't expect this to be any different.

I've been following this thread with interest. I just got my wife a Pink V3c because I thought that getting it to sync with her Mac would just be a matter of editing the plist file.

It turns out the phone that was delivered yesterday has the .03 firmware and although the address book syncs just fine, the calendar won't. I really don't want to have to downgrade the firmware myself. Has anyone tried going in to a Verizon store and asking them to do it? All I want to do is sync my wife's calendars and if I can't get it to work during the 15 day trial period, the phone is going back.

Thanks

What are you puffing on and can I have some?

In all seriousness, I only have Macs and never touch a PC in my daily life. I followed the wiki on flashing to Alltel and had no problems. It's spelled out simply so that even a non-windows user can do it. Flashing to the Verizon .02 firmware is even easier than Alltel since you don't have to repair stuff afterwards. However, I've read somewhere in this thread that people have trouble syncing calendars with more than 60 entries on the .02 firmware.

I really don't want to have to downgrade the firmware myself. Has anyone tried going in to a Verizon store and asking them to do it? All I want to do is sync my wife's calendars and if I can't get it to work during the 15 day trial period, the phone is going back.

Thanks

Verizon stores don't have access to older firmware.

Well, the good news is that I went ahead and used RSD Lite and flashed my wife's pink V3c back to version .02 and the flash worked flawlessly.

The bad news is that it hasn't fixed the problem. I can pair to the phone and I can even browse the device so I know the BT connection is good. The contacts sync fine but I get the "connection was lost" messaging on the calendar.

I've since been operating under the theory that there's something wrong with the calendar data itself. (I'm using Entourage with the latest update to support Sync Services.) So I tried choosing to sync from iCal's empty "Untitlted" calendar and there was no error. I added an event to that calendar and iSync reported that it worked but the event didn't show up on the phone. So now I'm more confused. Does any of this sound familiar?

I could switch my wife from Entourage to Mail.app and iCal but based on this experiement, I don't think it will solve the problem.

The calendar sync function does not work on the Verizon flashes properly. I think it was actually due to a bug in the verizonized UI. You will need to flash to altell which uses the original Moto UI if you want to sync the calendar. The Moto UI handles the calendar sync just fine under OSX

Its been well over 2 months since I replaced my Isync with the homemade version that recognizes the Razr V3c, and I am shocked that no one mentioned the odd querk that occurs when one uses voice dial. When I use Voice Dial, on a name that has just one phone # attached to it it always asks me if I meant mobile or mobile one when I tell the phone to "call xxx." Most of my phone #'s are categorized as mobile phones, and it almost always ask me whether i want to call there "mobile", or "mobile 1." when I go to check the contact name in my phone and in Apple's address book there is only one # listed.

Anyone know of a fix to this, it is rather annoying when your dialing a # to have yet another step before the razr dials the phone (I am using .02 version of firmware).

This seems to happen with #'s that were added via address book then synced to the phone, instead of #'s that were added via the razr's interface.

I've got the same setup as you, and I don't have this problem. You might try adding "mobile" to the end of your command, even if there's only one mobile phone number: "Call John Smith mobile".

So, I used the wiki to get my V3C downgraded to the Verizon .02 firmware. The firmware installed fine and the phone came back up. I am able to transfer files with OBEX and I can access Verizon's 1xRTT service with bluetooth DUN, so things were great.

Then, I realized that I wasn't receiving text messages on my RAZR anymore. So, I tried to send a text message from the RAZR, but I encountered a black screen of death with the following error message in red:

Fatal Error

0x00000002

../states/RM_MSG_State_Firs

Line #311

What's the deal??? I'm a little freaked. I tried flashing the firmware to .02 again and the same deal... After tinkering a little more, I found that I cannot access the inbox on the phone nor the calendar. When I choose "Inbox" or "Calendar" on the phone, nothing happens.

I'm tempted to try the Alltel firmware next, but it seems like that is a one-way road if I ever want to return to the Verizon firmware, so...

Has anyone seen this? Is there a fix?

Never seen your problem but as a Mac user (ie someone who has well-implemented Bluetooth), the Alltel flash is great. And if you want to return it to Verizon, just reflash to their firmware and say it doesn't work.

Posted by: schwie

So, I went to the Verizon store and they replaced my phone. Now I'm back with the .03 firmware on the replacement, so I'm a little leery to try flashing back down to .02. I may give it a shot later still.

I'm a Mac user too, but I'm using Card Blues Suite on a TiBook with a 3Com card to get my bluetooth. I'm running into a bug with Card Blues Suite, but I'm receiving tips from the developer Alex, so maybe I'll be able to get this to work yet!

I have been syncing the calendar in Entourage with my Razr V3c by using, Bluetooth, iSync, the iSync patch (which adds the V3c as an iSync supported device) and e2Sync (which copies info from Entourage to iCal to the phone and vice-versa). It worked for a while, and then stopped working. That phone crapped out and I got a replacement from Verizon. Again, I was able to establish a syncing relationship for about two weeks and then AGAIN, it stopped and I can't get it working again. I get a Sync failed message stating the connection was lost while sending some changes to the device. It seems to get as far as copying items to the phone - about 2%, then fails. One appointment does get transferred, but i can't find it anywhere on the phone, but there is a "ghost" appointment, no subject, dated January 5, 1980 that keeps appearing in iCal - not in Entourage and the phone's calendar only goes back to 1981. Could this be causing a conflict that trashes the connection? Also, items seem to get copied from the phone to Entourage, but not the other way.

Anyone with any clues as to what may suddenly cause this to happen? Logically you would think it may be the Bluetooth connection getting lost, but I had the same results using a USB. According to Verizon, the sync should not even be possible since my replacement phone has the .3 firmware with OBEX disabled, but it WAS working. Arrrgh, very frustrating. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

This same thing happened to my phone before I switched from firmware .03 to .02. I believe I was reading in another forum that this failure has something to do with your calendar. I'd do a full reset in iSync so it erases your v3c and then try syncing only your contacts... If you can get iSync to do the reset, go into the settings on the phone and a do a master clear. Ever since I turned off calendar syncing, iSync and my v3c have been getting along fine.

The v3c only has about 30 MB of memory, so its possible you've filled it up with your huge calendar if it spans back to the 80's and all of your contacts.

Oh yeah, you're right, contacts will sync with bluetooth and .03. I think the patch makes it possible by changing the .plist file for how iSync can work with the v3c. OBEX and bluetooth DUN still do not work with .03.

I think I'm going to try .02 again on Tuesday. I'll report back.

Posted by: neato_nj

I'm only syncing my calendar, as the contact sync messes up all my speed dials and other stuff. I've tried resetting iSync, but not doing a master clear on the phone... I'll try that. As far as going back to .02 firmware, I'm pretty sure I'd screw everything up, as I don't have a clue how to do that and it seems all of the instructions out there are for using software for the PC not the Mac.

It looks like they've added Motorola RAZR V3c support to iSync. However, they are saying that if you have a third party add on installed to support your phone, you should remove it before upgrading or syncing won't work. That's all fine, except for one thing. There is a note at the bottom of the iSync device support page saying that calendar syncing is not supported for the Verizon version of the V3c. I have the Verizon V3c, and with Brian Toth's V3c iSync plugin, calendar syncing works fine for me. If I'm going to lose that, I'm not so sure I'm interested in updating. Anyone know anything about this? If I upgrade and then reinstall Brian Toth's plugin, do you think iSync will use it and correctly sync calendars?

There are at least two other fixes listed in this upgrade that I've been specifically hoping for, but I don't want to upgrade if it's going to break my ability to sync my phone.

The problem is well noted on PC's as well. The V3c with the Verizon firmware has a calendar that is an overlay of the Motorola Calendar. The Verizon calendar bugs out if I think you have more than 60 calendar events. This is not an issue with the Alltel Flash because it uses the Motorola Calendar.

I just loaded the latest OS X 10.4.6 combo update and reran isync and discovered that it now supports the razr v3c natively. However, it's support is limited. It breaks support for iCal support and syncronization. What's up with that? I haven't tried reinstalling the hack to see if it "fixes" it. I'll post something here once I've done that.

Please do let us know what happens. I'm particularly interested in whether or not contact syncing works with version 3.0 Razr software. If that works but calendar syncing does not, then that would seem to confirm what I heard from Motorola the other day. In a support email from them, they said there is currently some problem between the Verizon UI and their calendaring software that they are trying to work out. If they do, my hope is iSync will then be able to sync calendars.

Posted by: tc_jedi

I applied the razr plugin to iSync 2.2 and it still didn't work for calendars. Luckily I had a backup of iSync 2.1.1 which I have uploaded to rapidshare for you guys.

iSync 2.2 adds native support for synching contacts only!

Here's a rapidshare link to a copy of iSynch 2.1.1 with full synching support for the V3c

Posted by: fincher

The sync support works but its not as complete as the shareware program OnSync. OnSync simply rocks!!!

I tried the newer iSync tonight and while it works you don't have a great of flexibility. With OnSync the control is phenomenal and you can also changed the Speed Dial locations without deleting the previous entry in the speed dial location. I use Speed Dial for entries 1-9 only.

Its great Apple now supports the V3c. I haven't tried it with iCal but I think it will work on USCC V3c since it has the Moto UI.

Yeah, I've got access to a PC at work, so I did the upgrade that way. There is no native Mac solution for going to .02 right now. I'd be leery to try VirtualPC too.

Indeed, the V3c is now listed as a supported device for iSync (see: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html) but there is a footnote stating that "the Verizon version of this phone does not support calendar synchronization." REALLY, what's up with THAT?

How are you successfully tethering your V3C at ev-do speeds? Do you have the data plan ($60/mo.)?

Hi Guys,

So I just got my Razr phone yesterday, and I have successfully flashed it to the original firmware . I am able to transfer pics and vids via Bluetooth. However, I can't get iSync to work. I get an error message saying " iSync can not connect to this device".

I had iSync version 2.2 but I modified it when I was trying to get bluetooth to recognize it. So I tried using iSync 2.1.1. from the link above but I get the same message. I also tried installing brian toth plugin but I keep get the same message.

I am not able to connect because I flashed my phone to the original firmware ? Any ideas?

Thanks

I don't think this is Apple's fault. There's a problem with Verizon's UI version 3.0 and the Motorola software. I was told by Motorola that they are working on it. I assume once that is resolved, iSync will work. Hopefully.

Posted by: thenamcam

For sure the verizon ui razr will not sync (at least long term or if you have a lot on your cal) with isync and ical. switch to the altell moto ui and it works great. i sync daily and have over 100 appointments a month. alarms, reminders, it all works good.

I've got sync envy.

So, I got a replacement phone, that was the only way I found to fix the inbox issue... I flashed my phone to .02 using ice9mike's directions on a PC:

1. Obtain Motorola RSD Lite 2.5 program (very simple Motorola flash tool. Can be found in the "usual" places).

2. Install the program and run.

3. Make sure your phone is connected and select the firmware file

4. Hit start and wait about 10 minutes. The phone will reboot with the flashed firmware.

I upgraded with a Super upgrade file and it went off with out a hitch. Mine only took 6 minutes. Once it is done, the phone is just sitting there charging. Unplug the USB cable and power it up. Nice!

Now I just need to work with Alex to get my 3com bluetooth card working on my TiBook, and I'll be cruisin'...

Does this work with the Alltel flash? Does this replace the multiple steps in the Alltel flash wiki??? This way sure seems a LOT less complicated!!!

The reason why we suggest PST and Multiflash flex is because you need PST to do the Seem edits and Multiflash flex comes with PST.

That makes sense. My RAZR should be here any day. I am trying to have myself completely ready to do the flash. Calendar is critical for me, so it looks like Alltel is the only way to go right now.

Great thread, everyone. Thanks.

ok here goes -
1. Remove the v3c from isync then from bluetooth preferences.
2. Go into applications and control-click iSync and click show package contents
3. go to Contents : PlugIns : ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice : Contents : PlugIns : PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin : Contents : Resources
4. Overwrite the MetaClasses.plist with the one in the attached zip file and you should be good.

I have both a vzw flashed v3c and the alltel flashed one and this fixed both.

I just did that. Now the calendar option is not grayed out but it doesn't sync the calendar. My phones calendar is empty but iCal is not. Watching the status under the progress bar it never says anything about the calendar.

Same thing here... Contacts work... no go on iCal.

Is Apple/Moto/VZW working on this issue? I really need iCal to sync with my RAZR.

you need to flash to .02 or altell to get bluetooth. .02 doesn't have obex on the phone but you can still move files back and forth. altell has obex. as far as i know you need a pc to flash a phone.

i use .02 and i am happy with it except for the broken calendar syncing. it worked for a few days and then just stopped.

You can enable calendaring syncing on the Verizon VC3 Razr by following the instructions here:

Yes. Before Apple officially supported syncing the VC3 with iSync, you could get in there and enable Address Book and iCal syncing. 10.4.6 introduced iSync 2.2, which offered support for the VC3 (specifically referring to it in the .plist file as the Verizon VC3; other versions are also included in the .plist file. The problem was that this "support" broke calendar syncing. The website I linked to in a previous post (http://www.briantoth.com/razr_v3c/editmeta.php) specifically addressed the changes made after the 10.4.6/iSync 2.2 update. So fire away...but back up your calendar first.

I dumped the new version of iSync and went back to the old one and my US Cellular phone is working pretty well. It still won't work as a way to connect to the net but i think that's US Cellular's limitations.
I'm a bit confused on some of the posts: are you folks saying that the new iSync will work with the modifications you suggest, i.e. the zip file,etc...? Also, some folks have suggested that Motorola will fix things: will they post an update?
I use my Bluetooth and my Powerbook G4 and most things are working fine now with the older version of iSync. Is there something new and improved with the new iSync that I'm missing or should i just leave well enough alone?

You are gonna need to borrow a friends PC to flash your phone to alltel - I'd recommend it to all of you having problems with the syncing. There are many other advantages as well, such as no menu lag. The wiki is here:

iSync 2.2 breaks the plugin, which was designed when iSync didn't support the VC3 at all. You must first get rid of the plugin data after you install 2.2, then modify the .plist file to turn calendar synchronization on. The plugin only worked with 2.1. The developer of the plugin was kind enough to post instructions on how to do so.

I really don't want to go do the altell thing. I like the way the phone is configured and the altell way looks like it has too many differences.

Verizon sucks, Motorola sucks, but you guys ROCK! Thanks to everyone, particularly Brian Toth and nonjo for helping me get my V3c to sync again. I bought the RAZR particularly to sync with my Entourage calendar (using e2sync/iSync). When it stopped working I was BUMMED OUT. Just to recap for those who may have a similar problem: I got the RAZR the very first day it was offered at the Verizon stores back in December. It had .02 firmware - I was able to sync and send file via bluetooth, but it crapped out (all I'd get was a snowy screen) and they gave me a new (prounounced: refurb) phone, but it had the OBEX crippled .03 firmware. Still, I was able to sync for about two weeks and then it just stopped working, giving me a "connection lost" error message 3/4 of the way through the sync process. I was resigned to not being able to sync my calendar until doing the fixes listed in the above threads. I'm using OSX 10.4.6 and iSync 2.2. I had trouble syncing more than one month's appointments, but that's enough for me... for now.

Its getting hard to watch this... You guys, iSync 2.2 took away calendar support for the v3c, because Motorola is having problems getting their calendar sync to work. I saw it published somewhere else.

I tried it myself and found that I was getting strange "memory is full" errors and other shenanigans.

My advice is wait until Apple and Moto figure it out and officially return the calendar syncing. It will return.

Here this fixed the sync problems with Isync 2.2

http://www.briantoth.com/razr_v3c/editmeta.php

When it says the following:
you'll come across a key that says "supportsCalendarsSync". Just change this to "yes"

Change the word "false" to "true" Not sure why it says to yes. Just change the word "false to "true" not the "supportsCalendarSync"

and wella it works again.

Brian Toth is my hero. I love the new iSync and the fact Apple made it easy for us to enable the calendar function.

The problem, according to Brian Toth, is syncing a large number of events. I agree. Its good advice to hold off if this applies to you.

this is definitely a verizon UI problem with the calendar, not moto or the mac. once you modify your plist file, your isync will work again. keep in mind to do full calendar sync (without issue) you can always flash your phone to the alltel moto ui.

This might work on the Verizon version but to get calendars to work on my US Cellular version, i had to go back to iSync 2.1. The other stuff still worked but no calendars or contacts until i switched back. I am using Bluetooth to sync and a powerbook G4 with the latest Tiger.

I have the US Cellular version and it works flawlessly but I will heed the advice of not having a large number of events.

Are you using Bluetooth to sync? Did you have to do any modifications of the metaclasses file to make it work? I still have iSync 2.2 on my machine but i haven't tried limiting the # of events. How many events will it hold on the calendar? thanks...

Using BT to sync and I did modify the plist changing "False" to "True" as previously described. No problems with the setup at all but I am finding out not all events transfer. For example, April events transfer fine both directions but May events have not. Obviously, a work in progress.

Update: I can change the preferences in iCal to sync events beyond the current week. Duh! Longtime Mac user but newbie with iCal.
