Can you pls help me out?

I am thinking of getting the new Treo 650 (i just have a cell phone right now). I have never used the mobile internet but want to badly.

I am in Orangeville, Ontario and EVDO(?) isn't here just yet.

How fast is the 1x speed for downloading (i have high speed internet at home..can someone make a comparison???)

And is there any news on whether EVDO will come up this way? I know it is in Brampton.

thanks so much!!!!

AFAIK the 650 isn't even EVDO capable, so you're stuck with 1X.

That being said, 1X is theoretically about 144 kbps which ideally translates out to about 18 KB/s. Real life, I doubt you'll see more than 10 KB/s which really isn't bad at all.

Let's say your average high speed connection is 1500 kbps.. this puts 1X at it's highest at about a tenth of your high speed connection - realistically you're probably looking at more like 1/15th the speed of your home connection.

That's a great way of putting it in layman's terms - thanks so much.

Ummm...so what IS out there that is faster that I could actually use here in Orangeville?

EVDO is expanding quickly. I wouldn't be suprised if its in your area soon...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/Palm-TunX; Blazer/4.1) 16;320x320)

Its gonna b comparable to a 56K connection if not slightly slower during peak periods

Do keep in mind, though - a lot of the content you're accessing is either going to be optimized for low bandwidth devices (like wap and special mobile sites) or types of data that don't really need super high speed connections (like chatting on MSN or downloading text emails). The only time I really feel any limitations to the speed of 1X is when I'm using high bandwidth apps like Google Maps - things that require high sustained data rates.

Trust me....you'll see the difference. If yer not that excited about the 650 wait for the evdo version in july or aug.

And nearly 2 years later, still no EV-DO. On the Telus coverage maps it says there's EV-DO here. C'mon Bell speed it the hell up!
