8300 camera problems

the zoom on my 8300 has never worked in the 3 months i've had the phone. has anyone else had this problem? is it fixable with a firmware update or is this something that i would need to send my phone to sanyo in order to fix? i want to make sure before i send it out, and also before i change the front faceplate and void the manufacturers warranty.

zoom will not work with the camera resolution set to high. Its ghey.
