He writes that the display is a disappointment, but he doesn't write compared to what...

We know the S55 display is better than the one on T68i, so I guess he might have compared it to he's pc monitor or something...

Well, 101x80 is one of the smallest color screens on the market, so maybe thats what he means by disappointing. I can't believe that Siemens released such a high-end phone with such a low-end screen.

Nokia series 40 phones are 128x128 (100% bigger)
Nokia series 60 phones are 176x208 (400% bigger)
Motorola t720 is 120x160 (150% bigger)

How is the SMS feature in the S55? How does it compare to the Nokias?

Honestly I think that most business users (which this phone is clearly aimed at) care less about the size/capabilities of the screen.

Many will have a seperate PDA which has a much better screen anyhow, and the screen that the S55 does have is still good enough to preview pictures, send/retrive basic email and SMS and play the odd game.

Could be. I hope thats true. It sounds like a nice device except for the display.

However, your argument reminds me of the Worperfect proponents back in the early days of MS Windows:

"Why would I want a WYSIWYG wordprocessor for Windows when my DOS based v5.1 does all I want?"

Don't get me wrong, there is a HUGE market for the "all in one" wonder-device that does everything (PDA, phone, media-player, gaming machine, etc).

However such devices invariably make major compromises (battery life, cpu power, screen size, storage, etc). I personally am a "two devic'er" and try to have the best tool for the job, be it pda or cellular device.

There will continue to be a market for tiny tech-savvy phones(like the S55) with lots of features (speakerphone, bluetooth, polyphonic, tri-band) for quite a few years yet.
