No Active flip... owners' opinions?

Hey guys
I know this has been brought up before, but not in a specific thread.
I have been through a few phones and finally to the point of nothing to upgrade to until Samsung S300 comes out. I have no interest in the V205 but the GD87 seems intersting..
I've read all the reviews on the phone and I will arrive in HK tmr morning and will need a new phone right away to use.
ONE main main concern I have is whether the NON active flip has been trouble some to the users (now that you've all had it for a persiod of time)
I use a V70 at home and love the swivel, I've always been a fan of flip phones but don't see a point in a flip phone (with external LCD) but no stupid active flip
It's become such a standard that now that the GD87/88 doens't have it, it sounds a bit stupid/ almost to the point of being a reason NOT to purchase the phone.
What do you think?
I mean all my phones have been active flip ever since the Motorola Microtac Elite... this sounds a bit dumb for the top of the line panasonic phone not to have it.

I have a GD87 and personally I don't find it a problem. You open the phone to talk any way so whats a push of the button. It also makes the photo id facility pretty pointless if when you open the phone it automtically connects. After saying that though it would have been much better if Panasonic had made it an option.

I got used to it now. no problem at all

to my knowledge... all japanese phones do not have active flip option. i think it's a patent of motorola or something...

Yup, Motorola 0wns a patent on it. I am not sure if Samsung pays a royality or is just daring Moto to sue but that is the reason that Pana does not offer it presently. I do not find it a problem at all. I just wish that the exterior button would terminate the call when using the PHF.

Yeah a good one there lost_rebel letīs hope for a sw revision that will do that also

I dont expect there will be a software upgrade.

Actually for those in Europe I will be suprised if there is not one. The documented issue with WAP push. I think that there will be an upgrade to fix that....I just don't know how we in the USA will be able to take advantage of that.

No problem for me as I have never been a fan of Motorola phones so I didn't get use to the active flip. I actually prefer it without, but an option like metioned above would be nice. Only other thing would be to silence it without opening the flip. Great phone though. I think it is the best all in one going now. I will also look to the S300 if it ever becomes available.

This is the second "Clam-Shell" design mobile I've owned and don't find it a problem.
I didn't use the feature on my old one and if it was a feature on the GD87 and enabled by default I would have switched it off.
A "missing feature" which I find more of a pain on the GD87 is not being able to press the button on the front to reject a call - but one small, minor issue with an otherwise excellent handset.

The reason they did not do this was because if you are carrying the mobile in a purse of fanny pack, you could accidently hit this button thereby missing the call. I am not agreeing with the decision but just relaying why.

halfsjj>there is a way to do that while ringing push the litlle front button it will become a silent call still you have to answer though
Posted by: lost_rebel
That does not work on my mobile. It does not affect the ring at all.

Same for me. I tried that when I first got it, but nothing happened. Is there a setting I am missing??? I would love that to work like that.

There's no option to do that in the phone.
I've tried everything... the outer button doesn't affect at all the ringing tone...
You're the only one who has done this...
Is there a special setting about it???

At risk of being a "me-too", me too! I can't get that to work either, although I recall vaguely reading about that function in a review either from imobile.com.au or asia.cnet.com...
