Monochrome external LCD! Yay

Posted by: tendura

I've heard good things about this phone! Can't wait to get my hands on it!

Posted by: bodeh6

No Bluetooth = No Deal. My iBook would be lonely.

Posted by: audiovoxx

will be intresting to see the new umts devices... but to be honest im more excited about the nokia launches!

Posted by: speed4tu

Every Samsung experience I have ever had SUCKED terribly. I have had 4 different samsungs and they were all terrible. Although they were with Sprint so that didn't help much.

WirelessAndy says:

wireless andy i disagree monchrome display are so 2003 i know it save battery and u can see them better in sunlight. in 2005 color outside displays are the way to go not flaming just stating my 2 cents

Posted by: altNz

For no particular reason, I feel that a UMTS phone needs to be flip so I've been eyeing this phone as my first UMTS phone. But I would have to agree with ItalianAngel831 that I was a bit put off by the monochrome 2nd display, even though I agree that monochrome has it's benefits, especially outdoors.

Posted by: brody4

it is flip with a microSD memory card slot and music player, so i will be having this phone.... any 1 have some prices ... im thinking around $150

lol i think he was joking

o i know he was joking i was just poking fun at him

Posted by: microchip13

This looks like a great phone.

It better have bluetooth. It has to have bluetooth, especially with UMTS.

Posted by: Naveen

does anyone know if any utms phones will be supporting ptt?

"Samsung is already planning a ZX20, which several reps mentioned briefly, although of course they wouldn't go into detail. Bluetooth and HSDPA were two key features of the ZX20 that they mentioned, however."

I don't think he was joking. Haven't you seen his nitpicks? I would prefer it have an external screen like on my v551 but color isn't so great sometimes.

well of course Samsung reps are going to say that. By no means does that equate to cingular or anyone carrying such a device

Samsung Reps said it. What more evidence do you need IHAP?

Pretty much means Samsung has a phone like this with Bluetooth/QVGA in the works for Cingular.....

Is this a 176x220 or 320x240?

you're missing the point. They can tell you all about a device they plan to create but that does not make it certain to be coming to cingular. Now, if you told me Stan said "hells yea, we're carrying that doggie" it would have more weight.

Do we need to review all the mobiles that manufacturer reps have said were coming over the last 12 months?

Posted by: brody4

any 1 got a date, pics or price .......something?

Posted by: Rok3nIt

Color is not all good. I spend a lot of time outside during the summer and it is very hard to see a color external screen outdoors. What is UTMS? I'm lost. I would actually prefer a monochrome external screen, unless it has at LEAST 65k colors. My z500a and RAZR has 4K, but the razrs still look good because the colors are vibrant. So actually what I'm saying is it could go either way.

Posted by: tuolumne

The V3 RAZR has a terrible exterior LCD.

Posted by: Rok3nIt

Yes in camera mode it looks really bad, in regular mode it, well, is still pretty bad.

Food for thought: Phonescoop has ZX20 listed as qtr 2. Sounds like I should wait, but it would be nice to upgrade my phone finally.

Posted by: tuolumne

"ZX20: This successor to the ZX10 upgrades the phone to true HSDPA and adds new features such as Bluetooth 2.0, music and video on demand and an advanced media player. Both phones are quad band GSM / GPRS (EDGE) and dual band (850/1900) UMTS, and have a Micro SD slot and 1.3 MP camera. The ZX10 is due out on Cingular this month, the ZX20 is due out in the second quarter."

Top Center.

Cingular Unveils Samsung ZX10 UMTS Phone

Fri Jan 06, 2006 12:00 pm

Samsung and Cingular Wireless today announced the upcoming market availability of the Samsung zx10, the first 3G/Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) phone in North America. UMTS enables data connections similar to broadband speeds, making it possible for consumers using the Samsung zx10 via Cingular Wireless service to watch streaming video, download games and access email faster than ever before. The zx10's integrated multimedia features, including video streaming/audio streaming and 1.3 megapixel camera, make the most of the phone's high-speed UMTS technology. When downloading content, the zx10 takes approximately 40 seconds to download a 1MB file, at speeds ranging from 220 to 320 kbps.

With the recent announcement of Cingular Video, an on-demand streaming video service that delivers fast, personalized access to a variety of entertainment and information services, consumers using the zx10 will be able to quickly access exclusive content, including video clips, ringtones and 3D games. Using the phone's internal 50MB of shared memory and microSD memory card slot, consumers can store volumes of digital entertainment to access anytime, anyplace.

"Samsung has incorporated cutting-edge UMTS technology into its zx10 giving consumers high-speed connectivity to access their favorite music and video content," said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president, Samsung. "This device is another example of Samsung's leadership in mobile entertainment. We're making audio and video on demand a reality."

The zx10's GSM quad-band support also gives consumers one communication device while traveling around the world where GSM networks are supported, and a speakerphone allowing for easy, hands-free conversations. Key features of the zx10 include:

- Quad-Band: GSM 1900/1800/900/850 MHz; Dual-Band: 1900/850 UMTS

The info isn't exactly new, but it is the first time I've seen exact specs if they are correct. I guess I've been blind up to this point LOL, but I never noticed how large that attenna stub was!

yes, but one can't expect every single user feature to be stuffed into a brand new offering.

Does anyone have any approxamate pricing information on either this or the ZX20?

Also, any dates regarding the ZX20 besides Q2? Early Q2, late Q2?

Posted by: Darknessxk

So the posted specs in this thread are correct right? Because the ones in the original post have weak specs compared to the new one, like a VGA camera instead of 1.3MP.

FYI this phone has been approved and willl ship on 1/15/06. looks like a nice phone if u have umts in your area.

Hmmm.....after playing around with Samsung's Vodafone HSDPA model side-by-side with both the ZX10 and 20, I must say I'm not very impressed with the latter two. Lo-res screens, no color external (not even a mono-OLED), thick size compared to the Voda model, and STILL a protruding antenna.

I'm lucky enough to be in a market that has UMTS already, but this phone (nor the LG model) make me want to run down and sign up for Cingulars version of "V-Cast".

Hopefully by summer (or no later then fall), Cingular will have a much better 3G line-up.

Posted by: tekelberry

From what I've read, only a few HSDPA handsets will be released this year. A lot of handsets will have UMTS though.

That the ZX10 and 20 are crap compared to the Voda model. Understand now?

Posted by: altNz

What do you expect from the first or should I say second crop of phones for UMTS in the US (the two original UMTS phones on AT&T were even bigger pieces of craps) v. Vodafone who are on their 4th or 5th crop (I'm just making up a number, but you get the idea). Vodafone's first batch weren't all that interesting either, maybe slightly better but not by much. I'm sure as time passes we'll get better phones, maybe if there's enough demand NEC, Pana or even Sharp may jump into the crop. There was word somewhere (maybe on HoFo or somewhere else) that Nokia & SE are supposedly jumping in sometime in the Spring, maybe we'll get lucky and see some version of the 802SE.

Posted by: CA

Quote:

Things are very different now. There is competition. Both Verizon and Sprint have several phones quite capable of 3G.

If Cingular can't come to the plate very quickly and compete with the Jones's it may be time to pack it in. As a customer I would think if your in the market for 3G its best to go elsewhere(churn away).

Either GSM/HSDPA is not capable of broadband or something behind the scene is happening that hampers it's progress. How hard could it be for HTC to "can" the CDMA guts and superglue in some GSM flavored broadband.

Posted by: zmarius

uhhh, how can it NOT have bluetooth??? what's wrong w/ samsung? come on now, a WCDMA phone, with all this other junk, and no bluetooth? even a cruddy camera? Well, i guess this is an entry level phone then

Posted by: KikoKazuma

Yea this phone is....ehhh... Save up for the ZX20; bluetooth 2.0 and hsdpa yumminess.

The sku is "64190" and we have 26k in stock. you can order this phone today if you really wanted it.

Posted by: brewm12

where are these phones in stock and what are their pricing?

Posted by: Blazers4ever

I wouldn't pay more than a $150 for this junk. Sorry there Cingular/Samsung fanboys.

But to be fair, between this model and the LG, I would of course pick this one.

Posted by: at&t_hitman

One came through my store today. Samsung has a new UI. I have to say I was actually very impressed.

So Progamerz can you help me order one?

these are slightly different models than the pix u posted b4, do they have different specs? VERY nice form factor!

This is the GSM variant of the Anycall SCH-V7400 (pictured before, CDMA Korean-only). It is the handset in which Samsung showed off it's 3.6Mbps capabilities over HSDPA at CES.

It has Bluetooth, Transflash, 2.2" QVGA, exterior TFT, front music controls, HSDPA, 1.3 MP rotating camera, 17mm slim form factor, intenna, a Qualcomm MSM6280 chipset (state of the art), and I am sure more features I don't know about This is what the ZX20 should have been...

Posted by: pauldg

hopefully, cingular eventually gets something like this. Hopefully sooner rather than later. played with the two 3g phones yesterday, i don't really like the samsung ... it just seems bland and half-*****, especially with the zx20 already on the way

Posted by: drunkentiger56

is it vga camera or a mega pixel camera??? im confused i looked this up at phone scoop and said mega pixel but here says a vga. i hate vga cameras, old. if it had a mega pixel than i would definetly get this. hopefully will come out soon and it will be $150 for a two year XD

I did hear that the zx20 is on the plan sheets for possibly late spring ... but what do i know ?? It seems these phones keep getting pushed back for months and still are buggy when they are released on Cingular duck taped network.

looks like a nice little phone...

Can you view pics and use MP3 ringtones if they're stored on the transflash card?

I tried the LG CE500 earlier this year and it couldn't do either of those from the transflash card. that was a big let down.

Certainly possible. This was in December.

Of course, there were other things that were just annoying that made me want to take it back. Namely no snooze on the alarm, the outside screen not staying lit so I can see what was going on (LG said it was designed to be dark and unusable ). Lack of speakerphone didn't help much either.

It wasn't a bad phone, it just had things that were deal breakers for me.

Posted by: Isriam

i returned both the zx-10 and the cu320. the zx-10 is a worthless cheap phone. the audio quality is crap. the cu320 is nice, but missing some features from high end phones that i like.

Incoming caller audio in the earpice? Ringtone/music playback? Speakerphone audio?

I'm really only concerned about the first. But if it's "worthless"...

Posted by: hitechy

There is a video review, and a full review of the ZX-10 on Cnet. Type zx-10 in search on cnet.com. They gave it a 8.0 out of 10.0. That's pretty good, considering how I've heard how crappy it is.

If this got an 8, then the CU320 must get a 9.

I think there is an error though, because it says it has bluetooth on the review.

you returned them or they were collected by your superiors? Are you a 3g launch market out there in AZ? If yes then your optimization people need to work a little harder. I've had very good up/down audio in 3G markets on the east coast - even before final optimization was complete

Posted by: Isriam

i dont believe any market is using 3g for voice yet. we are still using standard gsm switches ie 5ess and dms.

the voice quality problems are usually codec related or handset related. not network related. and i returned my phones to my co-worker who is an rf engineer that asked me to test the phones.

anyway, all audio is still 2g. not til the end of this year will 3g start carrying voice calls.

Then why did you make it seem that you yourself returned the phones because you didn't like them? You need to clarify much better if you are going to make claims like you did.

You never owned the phone...You never had a choice to keep them even if you wanted

maybe in AZ. 3G audio has been live in launch markets since Dec. Maybe not for customers but it's there

Man at the rate Cingular is going it seems like May 1 = ZX10 and May 1, 2007 = ZX20

Posted by: Superguy

Just got off the phone with Cingular's Premier line.

I asked about the availability of the ZX10 and the CS lady, after consulting with a supervisor, said that they should be available on 2/20. She said they ran into a supply problem ... and they ran into the same problem with the pink RAZR's (which should be on the Premier site later this week).

Couldn't, of course, guarantee the availability on that exact date, but it's more information that what we had before.

So hopefully we'll see them next week then.

Super

first of all, regardless if i returned the phone to cingular, or to my friend what does it matter? i did not like the phone, i told him he could have it back. big deal?

and 3g audio isn't available in all markets unless you've put a BSC onto the 3g network which to my knowledge hasn't happened yet. even the old at&t nortel 3g did not do voice.

i'm a switch tech for cingular in arizona. i'm responsible for all gsm and umts for the state. we are not putting voice on 3g until middle of the year. its currently going to lucent 5ess and nortel r4 switches.

earlier you made a blanket statement that 3G voice is not available. That is incorrect, it's just not available where you happen to be - in a legacy blue system. You're basing your "poor" audio comments on the 2G side or some backhaul/translations magic through the 5E, which is not 3G voice. That's my point.
People here don't know or don't care to know the difference, they just see complaints and negativity, when in reality you're not even using the system as it's designed to operate. I'd expect an employee, even a switch tech, to have a little more tact than to pass judgement on an experience in a network that's not even ready. But that's just me....

i really wanted a pink razr for my wife for valentines day but my local cingular store said they had none to sell. oh well, i guess i can make a coupon book or something for the wifey

what market is on 3g voice and i will call to verify. phoenix was original blue market with nortel 3g equipment. there was never voice calls placed on 3g other than test calls with the vendor.

i say this because i know for a fact that most if not all markets are NOT voice on 3g. complaining about voice quality is a 2g issue, and has been associated with codec issues. especially AMR.

Posted by: I have a phone

verify what? I'm stating a fact.

Posted by: Isriam

You work for cingular?

I used the phone, the audio quality was terrible between voice/mobile and voice/land. I used it on a GSM network. I used 2 different phones. It's funny that no other samsung, nokia, moto, or SE phone has the same problem.

I used a cingular branded slated for release samsung zx10.

Obviously you aren't so I'll stop replying. The audio quality of the phones i had were no good. Leave it at that and get over yourself. No wonder you've been banned and brag about it.

Posted by: CA

Please someone shoot me! What the heck is 3G audio? It can't be voice over 3G as in packets Ala VoIP right. I know it's where things are going and Cingular is probably testing it, but I can't imagine the samsung zx10 doing it...that would be news. So what do you guy's mean by 3G audio?

Could it be some sort of streaming audio that's now being called 3G audio?

Posted by: Puntaz

It works like this:

phone ---- bts --- bsc --- transcoder --- switch (dms/5ess)

the switch is where all your calls are routed, it basically controls everything for call flow. this is for a typical bss/2.5g cell phone call.

3g data/calls work like this

phone --- node-b --- rnc --- 3g switch (lucent/siemens/ericsson)

Now, most sites do not have voice trunks terminated on the 3g switch, it simply connects to the internet and routes data out. For 2.5g voice to work on 3g it has to go like this.

phone --- bts --- bsc --- transcoder --- 3g switch (lucent/siemens/ericsson)

To my knowledge markets are only testing 3G data, not voice. This would mean that one of the new 3g switches, has a 2.5g BSC on it. That is scheduled for middle of 2006.

is there any benefit for 3g phone calls? i would think that 3g would only benefit date transfer speeds

nothing to get over here. I've used all the units they offer in a 3G system yet have enough smarts to not pass judgement in a public forum.... something you might want to think about after boasting of your switch tech prowess as a cingular employee

one word: clean

Posted by: Superguy

Can 3G (W-CDMA) phones also "see" 3 towers at once like normal CDMA, or is it still the one tower like GSM?

Posted by: Isriam

3g voice will be the same as 2g voice. you won't tell a difference. still uses regular trunks to telco, media gateways, all the same stuff with the exception of the equipment.

Posted by: .7

Can we please stay on the thread topic.

If anyone would like to start a thread on Cingular 3G call quality then please do so in the main forum, but please keep this thread on the device specifically. 2 pages of 3G voice quality discussion isnt dong anyone any good under this thread topic.

Thanks

Saw this at Mobiledia:

"Our KB was updated today with adds/info on the LG CU320 and the Samsung ZX10.

I couldn't find specific release dates, but with this info being updated, hopefully it will be soon.

they're pretty sweet. while you're on a call, you can access the menu and slect "switch" to activate data WHILE you're on the voice call. this is gonna be cool. kinda leaves ev-do looking pretty lame."

Maybe we will see them Monday.

For sure?

Not that I don't believe you, it's just that I've called 3 different stores, the Premier number, and I get different info each time. Some have said tomorrow, others said this past Monday, and I heard even in April.

And we all know how many dates we've seen on this board.

I take it the LG CU320 will launch along side it too?

Is this all of the UMTS phones (ZX-10, CU320, 6282) that they are slowly getting or just the ZX-10?

Im sure the COR stores are getting the LG very soon as well, but to my knowledge the 6282 is not approved yet.

ZX 10 arrived in my store as well as the LG. But I'm bummed because it doesn't seem to want to play with my Trans Flash I bummed off of a Rokr. I dont wanna buy a new one, WAH!

Posted by: .7

I find in interesting that a phone that can sport a 262K color screen sports a monochrome screen on the outside. I don't get why Samsung has included external color screens in the past and now they have all but nixed them from all their phones. Not really a big deal I guess, more of an observation.

I wonder if it's more visible outside, being mono and all?

Hitman,

What store are you in and what is the price with contract for the ZX10?

Thanks in advance

OP updated to refect release info

Posted by: WirelessAndy

I spoke with the corporate store I usually visit. They tell me they just got the ZX10 and the LG in today, but can't sell them until maybe Monday.

Posted by: at&t_hitman

I'm in DC, sorry about your luck. The phone is scheduled to launch in most major markets Monday the 6th. I have to say I'm absolutely loving it after putting it through a day of stress. The battery life is a bit short, but I was all over Cingular Video and recieved at least 10 MMS.

I also had to reformat the Transflash card to get it to finally work. It sucks though because without bluetooth it's not very file transfer friendly. And there's no telling when a data cable will ever make its way to a website near you.

But just my gripes. Otherwise I absolutely am having a blast with the phone. UMTS is everything its cracked up to be. I had a few of the guys in my store using HTC 8125s a little envious.

Posted by: WirelessAndy

hitman,

OK, here are the usual Nit Picky questions:

1) Sound quality / RF holding ability
How does the incoming audio sound? Hissy/noisy? Loud enough? And does it still sound good with a low(er) signal?

2) Build
Since this is a clamshell/folder, how is the hinge? Any wobble when open/closed? Do the two halves line up properly when shut? Any squeeks and creaks?

3) T9 Predictive Text
I only ask this on Samsungs only: Does the T9 system permit the addition of new words, and does it actually REMEMBER them the next time around? You could try my "Tanya Test". Most Samsungs stumble on the name Tanya and give you "Vanc" at best. Manually enter in "Tanya" and start from scratch. Does the ZX10 remember Tanya, or do you get something like "Vanc" again?

4) Keypad

Nearly all Samsung keypads are consistently clicky and illuminated evenly. That is, except the lower-end SGH-x497, which had this grippy, rubbery keypad which also crackled (sounds sticky) at times, as if someone spilled a soda on the phone. How's the ZX10's keys?

5) Headset
What kind of headset jack does this have? The "normal" 2.5mm round one (albeing probably Samsung proprietary) or the square/flat one?

6) Misc.
* I notice some kind of LED/flash assist light on the front. Is there an LED blinky like most Samsungs (RF present, message waiting)?

* Do incoming message alert tones have nag alerts (repeat/vibrate every 2 mins)? Can you use your own ringers for messages, or are you stuck with the factory ones?

I've been using my Nokia 8890 again lately, and I'm finding it hard to plunk down the $$ for something new...

Posted by: I have a phone

shouldn't your picky list find a home on a blog? seriously

Posted by: iamthedudeman

Could someone who owns the phone elaborate a little about the UMTS speed, and how fast(hint:dslreports.com> ). Also how is the Cingular Video, what is offered etc. Call quality. UMTS/HSDPA is going live at the end of this month where I am and this phone suddenly got real appealing.

Anyone know if Premier will have them on Monday as well?

I'm a big fan Andy. I hope my response helps you.

1. RF is somewhat below average. I find that the phone has no problem fluctuating bars where my V3 would be solid. I wouldn't bank on it in a basement. The sound quality seems somewhat robotic. According to my field specialist, the reason the phones have been delayed in the first place, is because of a codec problem and bad audio quality. I don't hear any hiss per say, and it seems loud enough that I could hear my girlfriend mutter. (She LOVES her ZX-10 and shes not techy)

2. Build quality, like any Samsung is exceptional. The flip is very solid with hardly any noticible sqiggle or wobble. No creeking at all while flipping. Maybe slighty off on alignment but only on a fine eyes close study.

3. SO FAR... the phone passes T9 which would be a great improvement for Samsung. I call my dog a cute pet name in text with my girlfriend and the phone still remembers it today. As well as a profanity or two lol.

4. Keypad is more like the X497 in that its rubbery and clicky. However I find them to be very spacious, and it does illuminate evenly as far as I can tell. I cupped my hand over the keypad and all numbers were visible.

5. Headset is the USB wannabe Samsung proprietary. Without bluetooth I think this is a huge no no to Samsung.

6. No LED blinky. Sorry. I was never a huge fan of it myself though.

Messages do indeed have a nag alert. I love that about Samsung. But you are stuck with Samsungs own little cutesy message alert tones. No custom sadly.

I hope this answers sufficiently! Oh, and for the guy who asked about a blog, Andy does indeed run a very organized, and insightful blog that is linked in his signature.

Posted by: WirelessAndy

Thanks for the observations. Hope it helps others who have similar questions about this phone.

Cingular_hitman, the other poster knows I have a "blog" of pointless phone commentary. It was sarcasm. That person's point was that my questions about the Samsung ZX-10 belong elsewhere, not cluttering up this thread.

Oh well.

Posted by: craigg

I went into a Corporate store in Maryland yesterday asking about the ZX10. I was the only one in the store and the reps looked at each other first and then told me they didn't have it in stock. They indicated they would have them on Monday morning. I would bet that they were lying as I'm sure most stores already got their deliveries for a Monday rollout. I was prepared to migrate 4 lines but I can only assume that the three lazy reps already made their sales quotas for the month and were too tired to help me. I will probably call Premier on Monday and just do the migration via phone. I have even considered paying an ETF and just switching to Verizon. It just surprises me how bad Cingular has become when it comes to service. I'm going to miss the old AT&T

Posted by: Superguy

Why would you HAVE to buy the $30 package as a requirement to buy the phone?

With UMTS, I could see why you want to, but it doesn't make sense to miss a sale simply because someone doesn't want the service.

Posted by: .7

If you have a comment about the phone or your experience using it your post are welcome. If you want to vent your frustrations on Cingulars lack of whatever you feel is lacking then please feel free to post your displeasures in the rants section of the forum.

Posted by: iamthedudeman

A Cingular rep here in Tampa had one. I got to play with it a little bit. We don't have HSDPA/UMTS here yet so I don't know why he had one so I could not use the CV and comment on it. The biggest thing I noticed and I don't like is the screen is high resolution, but too small. It did seem undersized for this size of phone. Usable screen area is about one and a half inches if that, while the rest of the screen is needlessly taken up by a bunch of crap. At the very top is a blue bar with connection tab, a G for 3G and a battery indicator, all needed and understandable. But what in the hell is the need for the red bar with the huge yellow time indicator and date in white? It takes up half the screen. And on the bottom you have a blue bar with menu and options, again understandable. The black border around the screen is huge, and stupid. They could have made the black border smaller and added a bigger screen. I will not purchase this phone due to the lack of screen. How can you enjoy all that 3G content with a screen as small as this one? It is a damn joke. Now look at the 3G HSDPA for Europe the Z560, the screen appears twice as big, and has a better camera and is thin! The XZ20 is thick as a brick! Why does the US get **** and Europe get all the good phones? Please someone tell me, it seems Samsungs biggest market the USA gets the worst **** phones and Europe gets the good ones. Why? This doesn't make any sense. Is it because we in the US buy them anyway and in Europe they don't? I think it is because 3G is just starting here, but HSDPA is going to start here first, so I don't know, just pisses me off.

Cingular launches their first two UMTS phones

Posted Mar 6th 2006 4:52PM by Paul Miller
Filed under: Handsets, LG, Samsung, Cingular, HSDPA, UMTS
After spending plenty of time with their new 3G HSDPA network to make sure it was ready for the masses, Cingular is finally launching their first UMTS phones capable of using the network. We've heard plenty about the phones before, LG's CU320 slider and Samsung's ZX10 clamshell, but now they're out in the wild and ready to unleash a few extra Kbps on your wireless connection. Both phones are $99 after a $49 rebate

As much as I want to upgrade right now, I'm probably going to wait until they show up on the Premier site. $199 for a 1 year is hard to swallow right now, especially considering I can get the 2 yr with rebate price (or darn close to it) on a 1 year upgrade.

How's the performance of UMTS? How is the CV, latency etc. My friend works for Sprint out in Houston and he was telling me that he compared the CV on a friends phone who works for Cingular(I think he tests phones) to Sprints Video(I don't know what it's called) and the performance was just as good as Sprints with latency better on Cingular due to the UMTS better upload performance. Is he full of **** or what? I say ********, but that is just my opinion. But than again,
How much speed do you need with a video file which is small on a phone? I would think not much. So is HSDPA performance over UMTS on a phone that big a deal? I would think not, unless you are using your device for video calls. Who can speak on this, discuss. And yes I looked this up on this Forum, with no answers.

not much of a discount....only 134.99 with a very good FAN (50% off).

Posted by: SHoTTa35

i just noticed this on the regular Cingular site as well as my FAN. i get it for the same price as you Ant. I was prolly the first to jump on the UMTS bandwagon when it got to my neighbourhood but UMTS will prolly have to wait this time around.

I'm in the MD area if anyone was wondering (moved again LOL)

there are a million posts about UMTS speeds on cingular network.

cingular umts > EV-DO. in every regard.

Posted by: Justin5117

I want this phone! Is it availabe if you call 611 to order?

Posted by: craigg

This is true assuming one has a good signal; however the fact is that Verizon has much greater market penetration with their EVDO. Cingular offers a larger footprint with EDGE but their HSDPA coverage is limited at best and this applies even in the markets that have officially rolled out. For more details check out this thread I started over four months ago on HSDPA. There are over 300 posts in that thread with coverage, experiences, and speed tests included:

It popped up on my Premier site this morning. It's $134.99 on 2 year upgrade, $149.99 with 1 year upgrade.

Still better than paying $199.99 on a 1 year upgrade.

Now, do I want the LG or the Samsung?

I was able to order in Cleveland Ohio ($224 with no commitment)...do I need a new sim card for the phone or will a 64k nationwide sim work?

Just ordered my ZX10. Figured if I don't like it, I'll try the LG. I prefer the flip phones, so I'll try this first.

all you need is to scroll back, page 10 of this thread has several available zips. UMTS is not available in all of MD. Penetration is quite limited at present regardless of what Cingulars maps indicate.

The zip code I used for MD the price is 249.99 no comit. Does anyone think If I gave them a Cleveland zip I could get it for that price or would they no since Cleveland is a lot further then MD from Philadelphia.

Posted by: TambourineMan

Are either of these UMTS phones worth getting, or should one wait until HSPDA ones are available?

I want it primarily for tethering, not for watching worthless TV video. So, I would lean toward the LG CU320 as it has bluetooth but it sounds like Samsung will be coming out with a quick upgrade that includes BT and HSPDA.

Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but I ordered through NBO 1-888-444-4410 with my FAN number.

I hope the people ordering these phones know in order to get high speeds and to view the video content you must be in one of the following cities and have a 3G SIM.

Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tacoma and Washington, D.C.

other wise they are normal phones.

Samsung is already planning on making the ZX20 which is the ZX10 but with Bluetooth as HSPDA. But the only other announced 3G phones coming to Cingular are the Nokia 6282 and LG CU500.

Posted by: dlsnyder

The way I see it, since they are asking you to make a two year commitment when you get a new phone anyway, why not get a 3G model, especially if it is also a really good 2.5G phone? For those living in a major market UMTS will probably be rolled out sometime in the next two years and with one of these phones you will be ready on day 1.

I do a lot of travelling to Houston and Phoenix...so I'm excited to try out some of the new data services (i.e. Cingular Video). Will that be an issue if my account is set up in a non-UMTS market?

No, there should not. Just make sure you have a 3G SIM and also unlimited MediaNet for $19.99 on your account. You will be going through a lot of data viewing those videos.

I think not having BT would be a bigger deal if it didn't have the Transflash slot. As long as there is an easy way to get data to/from the phone with the memory card or thru IR (most laptops have this), I don't think it's that big of a deal.

You have to have something to connect the phone with anyway. BT doesn't come standard on a lot of things and you have to buy a BT adapter anyway if you don't have a PDA or something with it.

I do think it was a mistake not to have it as it forces sales to LG for those who want a BT headset, but I wouldn't say the phone sucks because of the lack of it.

I may be singing a different tune by the end of the week though.

To me, the slider form factor on the LG was more of a turn off than the lack of BT on the Samsung, so it just depends on what your needs are.

check the other features too. samsung has no external screen. (wtf 4k clock only?) and such. the voice quality on the LG is better than the samsung too.

Posted by: Justin5117

wait so the external screen only displays a clock? nothing else?

Posted by: Isriam

nothing else, i think it can display like 2 types of clock or something lol. its gay.

Where does this sort of gibberish come from? seriously

go buy a phone yourself. i'm not going to write up a 3 page report about why the phone sucks. i've owned tons of phones, i test tons of phones. this phone didn't even make it out of my office before i returned it to the RF guy. Its the samsung 3g version of the motorola V180.

do i need to go into details about it, or do you understand that its a low end phone and doesn't compete with even the razr as far as quality goes? even the razr shows caller ID on the external screen.

thats a bold and incorrect statement

It's gay...well, so am I, so should I go out and purchase this phone? C'mon that is a piss poor review if ever I saw one.

Here's my $0.02 review of both phones: was really hyped to get 3G, but after playing around with the phones and not seeing anything in the menus that would justify upgrading to 3G at this time, I've decided to wait and see. Liked the Samsung for form factor, texting layout of the keypad (eg: which key is the space key), and being able to customize shortcuts; didn't like the rubbery keypad, proprietary headset jack, and to some degree the lack of B/T. Liked the LG as it had a more solid keypad (solid plastic buttons) and B/T; did't like the form factor (sorry not that big of a fan of sliders), the send/end keys looking exactly the same as the functions keys, and a bit large v. the Samsung. For both: revolving camera seemed a bit cheapy and use to the menu key being in the middle of the d-pad v. launch MediaNet.

Pics I've seen show the standard info (time, battery, signal, etc), though I have seen ones with just the clock.

Of course, it wasn't that long ago that you said the LG sucked rocks too.

You are full of nonsense. First you whine about the voice quality, which was a bogus statement. Then you whine about a clock when you obviously havn't tested it enough to put the digital clock with full status on the external display. Then you call it "just gay" - I am not going to even touch this ridiculous statement.

But I forgot...You have owned "tons of phones".

And who is this mysterious RF guy?

Also remember he said that the "RF guy" asked for it back. It's not that he gave it back because he thought it sucked.

Does this handset allow for the user to change the t9 language while texting without changing the entire handset interface language as on some previous Samsung handsets?

thread released from sticky

you guys are funny. why would i tell you who my friend is that gets these phones?

the samsung is a low quality phone. the features are not up to standard with any good phone on the market. have you used a nokia 6230?

i tested 2 seperate phones, both would only show clock on external screen. the voice quality was horrible, people always asked why i sounded like i was in a tin can.

the only thing this phone has going for it, is a nice display on the inside, clamshell, and nice build quality.

if you don't like my review then go buy the phone. i'm not going to argue whether or not i actualy tested the phone and had one. you sound like jealous children saying i had to give the phone back, or i don't know what i'm talking about. have you even used the phone yet?
