Can't get my S55 to work on ATTWS!

Just received my nice new S55, problem is can't seem to make or receive calls. GPRS works fine, put my Cingular SIM in, works fine for voice calls. Tried my daughters ATTWS SIM, got the same problem.
Anyone got any ideas??

Are you saying the ATTWS GPRS works fine, but you can't make/receive calls?

Seems really strange..... I have an ATTWS SIM at the office....can try it out tomorrow and let you know.

Posted by: Gin Boy

I know it's really bizzare. GPRS works fine with the ATTWS SIM, but when I try to call I get a message "not connected", and incoming calls go straight to VM.
If I put in my Cingular SIM it works great, well at least as well as Cingular can.
If you can try it out tomorrow I'd really appreciate it before I send it back.

Hmmm... discouraging... I am really interested in this phone to replace my T68i and I am locked in to AT&T for another 10 months (my employer picks up the tab too).

The integrated speakerphone, polyphonic ring tones and tri-band are worth the premium price... the included camera is nice too (for when I don't want to carry my Canon G2 around).

The thing I hate the most about my T68i are the cheesy hard to press keypad and the difficult navigation.

So please if you get it working let me know!

Might not work at all since AT&T is not using any of the phone's 900/1800/1900 bands.

Ouch

Posted by: MedEdGuy

Didn't try my ATT SIM yet, but why do you say they're not using any of the S55's bands?

ATT GSM is on 1900.....

Uh.. what are you talking about?! AWS GSM is 1900. They are also building out 850mhz now.

If anyone gets it workin on AT&T please let us know!

Well as an update I've officially given up at least for now and will talk to Adam at GSM Phone source tomorrow. My last test was to put my Telecom Italia SIM which I know will roam onto ATTWS. It had exactly the same issue, worked on Cingular, but not on ATTWS. So I'm hoping that it's something to do with the spectrum block that ATT is using and that the phone has a fault which is stopping it working (hope always springs eternal!)
As a side note the phone is really really nice. As a comparison I looked at the signal strength on Cingular when compared to my T68. When the T68 was reading 0-1 bar the S55 showed 2-3 bars. Polyphinic ring tones, very nice. External speaker for handsfree, really nice. Screen I must admit was a little dissapointing the menu bars were too big covering up an already small screen area. GPRS was markedly faster than the T68.
Hopefully this is a faulty unit an Adam can replace it ASAP.

It sounds a lot more like a provider compatibility problem, unless of course there is something wrong with the unlock of that phone causing the problem.

i know on my S40 there's a network selection tab, where you chose GSM 900, 1800, or 1900 perhaps ATT is 1900, and cingular is 900. i'm not sure if this helps but good luck. i have an s55 i purchased from germany arriving on monday, hope i don't have any problems.

Its an ATT problem but only in certain ATT markets. The same thing happened when the S100 came out, it would not work in Washington D.C. Then the same phone came back to me and I was able to use it on ATT in Las Vegas with no problem. I really wish I knew what their problem was

The same thing is happening on my s55 that i finally got to open up and try out today, its definately an att problem and is pissing me off. The phone is great, my gprs and sms messaging also work, but i still cant make or recieve voice calls. If anyone can think of a solution for this please let us know, it is very frustrating to spend 500 on a phone and not be able to use it.

i love the phone but it doesn't work in San Francisco. I am really getting upset with ATT's tech people...they don't know anything at all about GSM networks. The big thing they do is tell you to take out your sim card and re=start. Well the phone does work in Detroit, and everyone that uses it says reception is better than t68i.

So I went to the ATT store here in SF and the person there said that maybe ATT is trying to exclude non-branded phones off their networks (is that even possible?) Anyway, if that is the case, I want out of my contract because the ability to use GSM phones from europe/asia before we have to wait for them here was the main reason i went to GSM in the first place.

LV wireless said it exactly correct....it is DEFINITELY AT&T, and not a faulty phone.....back in the day, when the S100 first came out, i had the exact same problem here in boston.....i would place calls and it would read "network failure", and when i received calls, it went straight to voicemail yet the GPRS worked fine, and Tmoblie sim card worked perfectly......back then, nobody had any clue becuz some ATT networks allowed the phone to work, and others didnt......i went thru 3 different S100's with all the same result, then i got an S100 that was flashed from 1.5 to 1.6, and all problems were solved......
ATT better get their act together....they make me want to search for another carrier....

So, if the firmware upgrade fixed the network issue on your S100, what makes you think that it was AT&T's fault? It was obviously a network compatibility issue with your S100.

i dont know what you are trying to say or imply, but i tried the S100 with tmobile and it worked flawlessly......i tried it with ATT and it did not work at all for calls around Boston, but the same phone worked on ATT in Las Vegas, and Florida.....this same problem happened with a total of 3 S100's that i tried until i realized it was an ATT thing and not a problem of the S100.....ATT makes it difficult to use phones on their network that they didnt directly sell to you....i was told this by an ATT tech during a troubleshooting call.....Tmobile is just the opposite....they dont care, and actually help you set up the phone on their network.....what i said in my response is that it is an ATT problem, not a phone problem....ATT is one of the only providers that cause this type of problem for any phone at all.....once the phone was flashed with the most recent "ATT network friendly" firmware, the phone worked perfectly......so, yes it was an ATT network compatibilty issue like i said......you can disagree with the point all you want, all i was trying to do was help the person with the problem.....you just seem like someone that wants to argue with someone...

so are there any possible firmware upgrades for the s55 to allow it to work with at & t wireless?

Posted by: mobileguy

As far as i know, AT&T is building out many 850 tower, in different area.

also AT&T also upgradeing their system to support MMS.

Hopefully, this will be end soon.

i am sure that there will be some firmware update soon that will alleviate the problem.....more than likely, the S56 will come out with the proper firmware that would work for ATT, and LV Wireless is probably your best bet to send it to for it to be flashed in the future.....

Could it be the EFR speech codec? I know with my Nokia 8390 and 6590 if I changed the speech codec *3370# I would get the same results.. Out going calls would get the network busy and incomming calls would go straight to voicemail. GPRS and SMS would perfectly though.

Listen, I don't quite think you understand. I have dozens of phones, none of which i purchased from AT&T, other than my 6310i. Not one of them has a problem working on the AT&T Wireless GSM network. if you want to talk about a network provider who doesn't want you to use phones from outside of their selection, just look at Cingular. It took literally forever to get the GPRS settings for their network and the only way we were able to obtain them at the time was from Lazarus, who happens to be a Cingular employee in their Carolina region. they simply do not want you, the consumer, to know the settings. AT&T will freely tell you them and has doneso in the past. So, the concept of network providers not wanting their customers to use non "approved" phones on their network is nothing new. Listen, if the S100 didn't work on the AT&T network with version 1.5 and then later worked with it on version 1.6, wouldn't you say that it could be a problem with the S100's firmware? I mean, only every other GSM 1900 phone to ever be tried on the network prior to the S100 worked. So, if every other phone before the S100 worked, why is it that AT&T is doing something wrong? They're not. Phones that were manufactured before AT&T decided to deploy a GSM network are compatible and are used daily. What you may need to keep in mind is that AT&T is the only provider to have installed EDGE equipment in half of their markets already, so this could possibly be the source of the problem...

I'm not trying to argue with you over this, but what i'm trying to say is that it's most definitely a problem with Siemens' firmware and not the AT&T network, just like it was with the S100. If this were the case, then all manufacturers would have to write "AT&T friendly" software as you mentioned, which is nothing short of ludicrous. Phones that were manufactured before AT&T's GSM network was planned still work perfectly and have no problems. So as of right now there is only one phone shipping, to my knowledge, that will not work on the AT&T GSM network-- in certain regions, the S55.
