I had the same problem with my vx6000 and Bit Pim. Connected by serial or USB? I honestly couldn't remember what I did to fix the problem....Maybe a change in the phone for data transfer or data port possibly. check your settings in the phone. Just a thought. Hope it helps.

Autodetect on bluetooth ONLY works if you are using windows XP with SP2 and you are using the native windows bluetooth drivers.
You need to choose the port manually otherwise.
Goto the settings window and hit the browse button next to the port entry, it will show you all the ports in your PC, you should see a list of active ports, if you phone is configured correctly you should see it in the list, manually select this port. If you are not sure post the contents of this window and I'll see if I can help

I didnt know that blue tooth was auto connect. I have only used a cable. Had to change settings manually to use the cable.

If you are using a USB Bluetooth dongle and want to use bitpim, simply go to their website and click help. Find the 9800 and click "how to." Follow their instructions on how to use the ringers. If you have a Mini SD card, here's what I did to put ringtones on my phone:
1. Pair your phone with your computer and activate serial port service.
2. It should say what port it is connected on in your bluetooth manager.
3. Open the latest version of BitPim.
4. Select the 9800 from the list of phones in the Settings menu.
5. Where it says auto under which port to connect with, manually type the port your phone is connected on.
6. If you try to have BitPim detect your phone, it won't work, so when you have everything filled it, make a folder called "ringers" on your mini sd card.
7. Put anything you want to be made into a ringtone into this folder.
8. Put the card back in your phone.
9. Click Data, Get Phone Data, check Ringtone, and Replace All.
10. After it is done, click Data, Send Phone Data, check Ringtone, and Replace All.
11. You should now have usable ringtones as long as your mini sd card stays in your phone!
***I take no responsibility what so ever when you chose to edit your phone. I am merely describing what worked for ME, use at your own risk...and have fun with your new ringtones!***
