Help with email on VZW Treo 650

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I didn't want to have to ask...cause I'm sure you guys get these questions all the time. I've used the search feature and have only found bits and pieces of information.

I just picked up a Treo 650 from Verizon and I would like to have my comcast.net email go directly to my treo. I've found a ton of posts that reference versamail but I can't find it on mine. All I have is an icon for a program simply called "mail" (the icon is a white envelope with red and black arrows).

From all that I've read versamail, snapper and chatter seem to be the favorites of those on this board. Of the three are any free? Can anyone point me in the right direction to a walkthrough on how to get started?

Again, sorry for the noob question but I did make an effort to find the answer on my own.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think Mail is there for wireless only since I also couldn't see how to make it work for my ISPs on my VZ 650. Get a copy of SnapperMail. I have used it without any problems on several Palm devices - POP or IMAP works geat.

Frank

EDIT: Forgot to mention Snapper is also easy to setup. Click on New Account, enter your Username and Password, enter incoming server such as mail.comcast.net and outgoing server such as smtp.comcast.net and you should be good to go. Snapper is not free but well worth the money.

VersaMail is on the CD that came with the Treo; however, it is pretty buggy. The developer of Chatter has a forum over at Treo Central. It sounds to me like you want "push" e-mail, and Chatter is the way to go.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into both in more detail.

If "push" means email will come directly to the 650 without me manually having to check to see if I have messages...then yes, that's what I wan't. Hopefully I can have it stay on the server so when I get home or back to the office they'll also come in on my desktop.

While I'm at it, one more question. What should I use to convert all of my I-tunes music to mp3. All of my songs downloaded from I tunes are in a format that pocket tunes doesn't recognize.

This Treo has consumed so much of my time since I picked it up. Every free moment I have I spend trying to tweak this thing to my liking. It's rediculous but it has already proved very useful.

Thanks again.

You're not going to get push email from a pop3 server. That's only available for linking to an exchange server. I haven't researched the alleged bugs in versamail but I am using the v3.1 client that came with my very recently purchased TREO. I installed versamail because it appeared to me that the Verizon wireless sync server did not send email from the TREO, if you only had a pop3 mail account. Its a read only service for pop3 - not very useful. Versamail has the ability to schedule pickups. It works exactly like a pop3 client does on your PC. I've tried it with my commercial Yahoo account as well as Gmail (google) and it works just fine. In like it because I can configure each pop3 client separately just like a PC client.

Now I am wondering if I need Verizon's extra cost data service if I am going directly to my pop server and not using their wireless server.

I think that's what I meant. If I can schedule it to check my comcast.net email every 30 minutes that's perfect for me.

I don't need to give Verizon any info right? Just put the info in my TREO email client and it should work.

Thanks for the info

Based on what you're describing, Versamail sounds right for your needs. (I use Chatter, but have used Versamail in the past without any problems.)

And, that's correct... you just need to enter your Comcast email settings into Versamail.

That's exactly right. I've settled on using Versamail. I tried Snappermail and saw no real added value. Chatter had some stability problems, and in fact, would not read some forwarded emails correctly. The latest version of Versamail does a very nice job of formatting the mail and will pull down the entire message, if you program it to do so. I will continue to use Verizon's service to get to my lotus notes corporate mail because its the only way to do so. But for personal mail, Versamail works fine (scheduled every 30 minutes as you indicated).

You may have to install it from the "Software Installation Disk" that Verizon should have provided with the phone. Not sure where you're looking for it on your Treo, but the icon is an envelope, and it will say VersaMail underneath.

Can Versamail store mail on the SD card like Snappper and Chatter can? I'd really rather not buy one of them since I have versamail already working, but I get a ton of mail (>150 messages a day, sometimes double that) and it's taking up a lot of space even with the filters I have set up. Anyone have any *cheap* suggestions? I'm not opposed to paying for something if it's reasonably priced (<$25). It also needs imap over ssl support.

Mine works. I had some issues getting it to work with my postfix server using ssl, it generated lots of strange messages that I was too lazy to debug. I found this page that I used to set my smtp settings. I now send mail with it every day.

hey just saw this but I live over in NY and I too use versamail and although everyone says it buggy and whatnot, I find it to work very well. I go to https://www.wirelesssync.vzw.com/en/logon.asp and then setup>account on the top right then go to the left side and click on internet/POP accounts and add your cable based mail. I get 3 different optonline accounts , one yahoo and one for my website through that server and I notice no delays or problems, as a matter of fact when I hear my treo get mail sometimes I go check it online, I am never usually waiting for it. Its free works good and gives me no problems let me know if youneed some more help with it.

I wish the wireless sync supported ssl sources....my imap server supports only ssl (policy reasons).
