HP Smartphone in the wild! First pics??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So i was at the bar, a friend of a friend saw my E398 and thought it was the iTunes phone and i explained how it was the original yada yada... the he busts out "Betcha haven't seen one of these". I was like "WTF is that???" Easily comparable to pictures that I have seen of the SP5, but an HP! It was running WM 5.0 and had a 320x240 screen... wifi, BT 1.2 i believe, 1.3 MP cam, dont know about internal memory, but he did have a 1gb minisd card under the battery. and model # xb4500 (do NOT quote me on the first 2 letters, i was adrinkin... but positive on the 4500). It was much thicker than my E398, yet seemed to be contoured (sp?) around the back. around the front edge was a chrome lining, a very nice touch. He said it was a prototype that his friend gave him, and he is looking into getting me the other one (yea we'll see about that.. even though i offered CASH MONEY upfront). Unfortunately, he wasnt too sure that they would be put into production. Here's the kicker, it was branded TMOBILE on the back, standard stamp... so what does that mean?? PLEASE dismiss the crappy E398 camera pics, but i had to capture the moment somehow. I'm throwin a party tomorrow so wont be able to answer any questions at all for a few days... but i thought I'd share.

This phone was sweet. Indeed. Cheers!

This looks to be MS fabeled "Peabody" smartphone. MS wanted to mass prouduce them (thru a manufacturer of course) as a low cost smartphone for the masses.

Posted by: bboog

woah, nice catch rock. kinda looks like the tornado (i-mate sp5, qtek 8310 variant) from the keyboard. i wonder if its just another htc rebrand? maybe with some chrome around the sides instead of the grey plastic?

Posted by: chris_c28

It's most possibly a HTC model as HTC produces HP's iPaqs too.

Posted by: rock99rock

im pretty sure he said it was not made by HTC...

Posted by: Omega2008

I really think its that peabody prototype....I never saw one in person but I saw some hi-res pictures of it before.

There is some information about it on MGN. Its kinda old. I maybe going out on a tangent but its worth a shot lol. Tangents are fun!

i looked up the peabody on google, and saw some pics of it on engadget.

looks nothing like this omega? it doesnt even look like WM 5.0. maybe you know of newer snaps than this?

Posted by: Omega2008

I do...I just can't find them. Remember that was a prototype picture and in fact there were several different models made by different manufactures, it wasn't just one. So its hard to say. There hasn't been much info on peabody. I am only speculating at this point.

Posted by: rock99rock

Speculation is all we have right now i suppose. I emailed my friends' friend, (ok that is getting old quick) and asked him for some hi-res shots of the device.

Looks to me like another HTC Tornado.

Posted by: Omega2008

Yeah it looks like a Tornado but I can't be to sure. I would need to know the specs and some clearer pictures to make that assumption. However, I until I find more info on peabody and those damn pictures I had of it, forget I said anything about it lol.

One last thing, since you said it was branded T-Mobile and T-Mobile tends to love HP products, I am betting that this the prototype of the US Tornado version for T-Mobile. Like the SDA but made by HP. We all know that HTC makes alot of HP's PDA's and such. I wouldn't put it past HP to have a smartphone under its wing.

I can't wait for the clear pictures...that will help out alot.

Posted by: rock99rock

ok, i think i remember him saying it supported some music download service.

Posted by: rock99rock

AWESOME!! ok so i was wrong about the 2 letters, its the rw4500. Enjoy!

This must be the one that T-Mobile USA is going to release. Thats pretty cool looking. Looks better than the 2125 and it has Wi-fi.....shame on Cingular.

It doesn't look like the HTC Tornado but if could be a varient of it. Take a look at the keypad on the SP5 then on rw4500...they look different but I am thinking that is a Tornado varient.

Wow. If T-mobile startes to have a smartphone line like this in a year I think I might switch from Cingular when my contract is done. I will have to wait for cingular to see what they do. I have to say that is a very sweet phone.

Posted by: chris_c28

I'm very very convinced this is a HTC. The design is very classic HTC, although HP would have customised the interface further. I would love to own this phone too!

Posted by: hylton

yea, looks cool...it might actually convince me to go back to a candybar if it comes out w/ wifi, edge, minisd, and bluetooth, and looks to only be a tad larger than the SMT5600...but, i've grown to love my MPx220, gonna be hard to switch...

It's the European version of the new T-Mobile smartphone. However, the version for T-Mobile USA has a hump like the one in Cingular's phone. On the plus side, it does have WiFi.

Why does it have to be the one for the USA?

Nah, doesn't look like the Tornado at all....

Looks very HTCistic to me! The inards and bottom connects are very similar to my SMT5600. In fact, the 2.5mm external mic/headphones and power/USB connector are identical, as best I can tell from here.

Wow, looks like a nice rig!!

Posted by: Omega2008

I thought the T-Mobiles euro version was going to be the SDA II, I thought it was going to be the SP5m, just not called that though.

I'm talking about the link to the German site with the T-Mobile SDA II, which is a version of the music HTC Tornado/I-mate SP5m. T-Mobile is going to release the SDA II phone in the US, but with an extended antenna (aka. hump).

The iPAQ smartphone, looks to me like some version of the non-music HTC Tornado, aka I-mate SP5.

Posted by: Omega2008

Well the OP said that it was a Prototype. A few scenarios come to mind. First, T-Mobile could have intially wanted to carry this device but decided to go with the SP5m model for reasons that I don't know. Second, T-Mobile could be droping the SP5m (SDA II) and will carry the HP Smartphone, why I don't know its all speculation. Last, T-Mobile may have two smartphones to offer, the SDA II and this HP Smartphone. I am not sure but all of these and many other scenarios are possiable. The fact is that until we have more information about this device we can only speculate. But its fun to guess! haha.

This is indeed the case. - Tmo will apparently be carrying the "media" version of this phone instead of the iPAQ branded model. Whether or not it will include WiFi remains to be seen; I personally would be surprised, but if any operator will leave it in, Tmo would be the one (:@ cingular)

Yes, this is an HTC phone, and no, it will not be produced.

That sucks, cause this phone was really sweet. If you don't mind me asking, how do you know? You just want us to take your word on it?

Posted by: warning9

I want it!

not bad at all...... pretty impressive
