my try @ painting sk (pics)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: phavor

i tried painting my sk also using the info and instructions from djhyro. my sk came out pretty sic also. couple important things, thin coats and drying time are key.

i have more images, i can post if interested. images are a little grainy but the finished product is nice. smooth and even finish

djhyro's instructions
1. Remove the 4 buttons by digging your nail to the edges closest to the screen and lifting it up.
2. Remove your sim card and bumpers.
3. Flip the screen half way and remove the 2 torx screws by the reset button.
4. Remove the other 4 torx screws under the buttons.
5. Carefully detach the top from the bottom. The top bumper area will be easier to detach than the bottom bumper area. The bottom requires the slightest bit of force.
5. Once you have the top separated from the bottom, remove the 3 black screws in the middle of the circuit board on the bottom half (they form a triangle). There are 2 additional screws above and below the directional keypad. These do not need to be removed in order to remove the circuit board from the bottom housing
6. Now, you can lift the circuit board away from the bottom housing. Notice the vibrator on the top right and the speaker on the left side are still on the housing. You will need to remove these if you want to paint it. You will also need to mask the two gray areas on the bottom housing (the one that says SIDEKICK II) (if you dont want to paint over them) as well as the camera viewfinder, mirror, and flash area.
7. For the top half, once those 2 torx screws near the reset button are removed, the screen can come off. If you look at the top half of the unit, you will see a cylindrical shape piece of metal at the top. This manages the screen cable so it doesn't tangle whenever you flip it. This whole assembly comes off with the screen. All you have to do is guide it out of the housing.
8. The housing for the screen can be removed by unscrewing the 4 screws behind it where the IMEI sticker is. The housing snaps off easily.
8. The rest is cake. The buttons for hanging up and pick up and also the scroll wheel can be removed easily. The scroll wheel is held on by 2 screws. The keyboard snaps off easily. Don't forget to unscrew the white piece of plastic stopper that physically stops the screen whenever it flips.

Came out nice. What type of paint u used? Looks alil glossy and grainy like u said, but in the one of the pics it looks really smooth. Nice Job, I plan to paint using the metallic blue from Krylon and see how it comes out.

Posted by: phavor

the grainy effect is from the cam i used. i' try take a better quality pic when possible. the finish on the sk is very smooth not too glossy. i used tamiya plastic modelers paints and a lacquer overcoat made for models as well.

paints used

Hell yea lol. The LE Mister cartoons go for like $400 on ebay even. Thats too much. Imma do a try with my sk with a metallic blue look, I used to paint pc cases when I did a lot pc modding so it shouldnt have too much trouble. I just never wanted to try on the sk2 cuz I had no idea how to dissamble them before thinking that it was one of those phones that once u open u destroy the housing or something.

Posted by: ProphetX

hey can you blow up those first pics in the first post?

Posted by: heyy

wow thats alot easier to disasemble than i thought it would be, has anyone thought of dying the plastic insted of painting, because i know that would be a serious option to consider since dying it would be very durable.... nevermind im dumb because it would dye the camera piece and the 2 stickers on the back

nice job.i love the look...thinking about painting my skII but kinda scared of pulling it apart and breaking something.

Then again it beats paying 300 for a mr.cartoon or 75 bucks on sidekick2go.

btw how long did the whole process take? drying? taking apart?

Posted by: V-Bizzle

How many coats of paint and overcoat did u use?

Posted by: mextel

looks good

Posted by: phavor

i took the sk apart and started sanding it in about 2/3 hrs.
i spent another hr or so sanding everything completely.
i spent 1 day applying primer, about 2 coats with dry time between.
i spent 2 days doing the actual painting, applying VERY thin coats.
i let it dry for maybe 2 days.
then 2 coats of overcoats (VERY THIN coats)
i then allowed 1 week for the paint to dry and cure.

if you start handling the sk to soon after painting it will feel sticky and paint will not set well. i would recommend at least 1 week at room temp without touching.

Posted by: V-Bizzle

How much did u sand it? Did u sand just barely or did u sand it until powder was coming off of it? And did u do thin layers of primer too or did u put the primer on thicker? And how many coats of actual paint did u do? Sry for all the questions, i dont wanna mess up

that looks hot!

I actually went ahead and painted my sk aswell, Did with metallic red paint. Though I made a slight mistake as you can see on the side in the inside of the case's normal color, so it looks like a white line on the side of the case. Although the job came out really nice but I have to wait for a fresh order of paints to come in as tamiya only sells these small lil cans of spray paint and the run out quickly as I test it on old trackball mouse i had. :-\ I'll post some pics up later.

But I agree with phavor, dry time is a huge factor on getting a color and presentation. Some cans say you can use the item you painted after only a few hours or whatever. But I disagree completely as like he said it will not only feel icky but maybe even a lil sandy. I waited atleast 4 days before I started handling the case, (thats after all the sanding, priming, and painting time) So about atleast 7-9 days it takes to do a good job.

I'm sure he did atleast 2 coats of paint since it says he put thin coats of paints.

cool think i'll chill until i get some marks on my phone ,then i'll really have a reason.

Posted by: puerrican718

Using both djhyro and phavor's instructions I have finished my sk. Took a week to do but worth it. Here are some pics

May seem alil glossy due to the paint and camera used since I used a metallic red Tamiya paint. But in person it looks hot. i'll definitely be holding on to the sidekick until sk3 comes into play later on in the year.

he is in canada and in canada they are called hiptops not sidekicks and writing fido there (the carrier of the hiptop) would look dumb

Posted by: negronese

oh.. it still says tmobile on the screen? or is that default no matter where ur using it?

Posted by: puerrican718

I never mentioned in the thread that what happened is I bought a dead suncom sidekick from someone online before. The phone was dead but the case was in great condition. My case was somewhat messed up but the screen was really bad. So i bought the phone from the guy and used the case and screen on my T-mobile sidekick. Thats why the screen is different from regular T-Mobile sidekicks.

P.S. lol also I live in ny, not canada. Sorry for the confusion

Posted by: negronese

nonetheless.. phone looks amazing.. i would rather have mine say hiptop in red.. or did u paint that red also? im just scared if i paint mine and the phone messes up (im on my 5th one) ,i cant send it back to tmobile for replacement..

Posted by: bigd2323

puerrican718 , did you use any primer on it or did you just start to spray paint the mettalic red on it??? please let me know thanks

Posted by: thUgsOuLjAh723

long read..

i took mine apart last week. i have yet to assemble it back together. im waiting for the paint to dry and also for another can of tamiya paint. it took me about 30 mins to take it apart. i sanded it down using tamiya 800grit sandpaper. basically sanded it down until it was dull. i then sprayed it with white tamiya primer (plastics). let it sit about a day or so then i spray painted it metallic blue. was on my second coat when i ran out. ordered more plastic paint. waiting for that then i still have to go over it with two coats of Testors 3 oz. Spray Ultra Gloss Clearcoat. i hope i still remember where all the parts go when i finally reassemble it next week. lol. will post pictures after i finish.

Posted by: bigd2323

so you sanded it down untill the original stock color was gone????? then primer then color and then your going to add gloss to it?? Damn i got to see this i actually want mine to be metallic blue also

Posted by: thUgsOuLjAh723

yes, i sanded it down until i got to the original color. i basically sanded it like crazy while being careful. here is a picture i took. i took some paperclips and some tape and hung it on a hanger and set it somewhere hanging and spray painted it. lol. i taped the camera lens part, but not the silver part. i dont even use the camera anyways. lol.

Posted by: bigd2323

wow thats a pretty idea very well painted man!!!!!!
