T809 - How to use your own MP3s as ringtones

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Okay, so while I was miffed at Samsung for making things a little trickier than they should be, I knew there would be a way around it. You can not set your standard MP3 files as ringtones, you can only use DRM-MP3 files as ringtones.

The work around is a program that was mentioned on here, called Media Audio Cutter from ringtonecity.com. When you go to check out, things look kind of sketchy, but I paid my $15 yesterday and got my registration code today and the software works.

Apparently the T809 will only support ringtones less than 35 seconds (roughly, still testing). I used the Samsung software to cut and trim the MP3, add some fades and saved it as an MP3 file. I used Media Audio Cutter to open that MP3 up and "Upload with DRM". It uploads it to a (theirs?) web site and gives you a URL to enter into your phone. When you do, it retrieves the ringtone from the server and saves it to the phone.

I'm listening to my first one now. "We Need a War" by Fischerspooner. Woo hoo!

A side note about the software -- where as some other ringtone software ties your phone number to the software when you register it, Media Audio Cutter simply uploads and gives you the URL, so in effect, you can use it to put ringtones on multiple numbers. Nice touch.

After two days of playing around with the t809 and trying to get the mp3 ringtones to work i have found this out.

1. rename your mp3 from .mp3 to .3gp (the video format the t809 supports)
2. copy it to your t-flash card
3. find the file and set as RINGER.

have fun every one.

Posted by: bluedevils32701

My friend was telling me maybe you can rename the ringtone from .mp3 to .mid and maybe that will work. I dunno maybe you guys can play around with that.

Posted by: AwaySooner

Wow if this is true, I guess some of the posters here can finally use the phone to make and receive calls instead of *****ing about mp3 ringtone.

Damn it..where's the UPS truck? I want my phone now!

I use xingtone to create ringtones for my phone, they transfer to the samsung t809 in the mp3 player but im confused as to how to rename them to make them work as ringtone? saved them to transflash and converted file to mpeg4 but that didnt work can someone give me step by step instructions on how to convert a mp3 file received to the phone to make it work on the samsung t809 as a ringtone. love the xingtone software but kinda new to converting files etc etc thanx sadlatin2@aol.com

Posted by: Mango808

Once you make your Mp3 clip, you need to right click on the filename in Windows Explorer and Rename the extension from .mp3 to .3gp and save it. Then send it to your phone or put it on the TransFlash card and put that in your phone.

Now if you cannot see the filename extensions (i.e. all you see is my_song and not my_song.mp3, you need to go to View at the top of the Explorer Toolbar and select Options and uncheck Hide file extensions for known filetypes and then Okay. Now you should be able to see the .mp3 at the end of the filenames.

Posted by: sadlatin2

thanx again for all your help. now this truly is a great phone from samsung once you figure out the little hacks to make mp3 ringtones work.

Posted by: chrisl82

holy nice that is awesome!!!

now if only I could get rid of T-zones and enable piscelviewer hahaha

Posted by: sadlatin2

this is an awsome phone so im wondering if i have to do the same thing to make videos work on the phone as well from a transflash card(convert to .3gp?) and where can i get a 512 meg transflash for the best price?? any info holla back

Posted by: bluedevils32701

Posted by: evilrome0

i was reading that ring tones have a max of 35 sec. does that mean mp3's that i set as ring tones also can only be 35 sec? or does it only play 35 sec of mp3..

There's software that comes with the phone that lets you edit and convert video files (to mp4 or 3gp, they both work,) then move them over to the phone, it's very nicely laid out and easy to use.

The mp3 player does not have a 35 second limit, although the mp3 ringtones very well may. I've been making mine 30 seconds long so I didn't notice. There's an included program for mp3 editing too, also very well done. Making a ringtone from an mp3 is very fast and easy. I banged out 5 or 6 of them in no time at all.

Posted by: sadlatin2

so i was able to do a video on my phone converting it to .3gp file but it seems very poor in quality from the original is the mpeg4 video better should i try it that way? i thought this phone had good video but it seems my p735 took better video when i had it

Posted by: Toaster

Does the T809 do video ringtones? (ie: play a video clip when someone calls you)

Just curious.

I tried giving this a shot- it does work as caller ID, but a couple of things that I found out:

-Has to be a 3gp file, which has horrible audio typically
-sound doesn't play on video if it's the caller id- the video will play with the current set ringtone

I haven't had a chance to play around a whole lot with this, but I would guess that you may be able to rename a mp4 file to 3gp and it would play with better audio quality.

Posted by: Snowman

Tried the 3gp but I keep getting unknown file type error when I try to transfer it to the music folder via usb cable.

Posted by: sye46

tip.... you can download MP3 samples to use as ringtones at Walmart.com cd music section

Posted by: revenant

very good idea... that will save time in trunkating the file to the right time size... whew.

Posted by: AwaySooner

You cannot transfer it to the phone memory directly. Set the phone to USB mass storage, put the 3pg file in the music folder on the transflash. Disconnect and access it via File Manager. You can then set it as ringtone.

is there a limit on size? what you encode the mp3 at? length?

I don't think there is a real limit on the length it can be, but it shouldn't be longer than 30 seconds as that is the max length the phone/system will ring before going to voicemail.

Whatever you decide to encode them at is up to you, but the higher the bitrate/quality the larger the file will be on the phone. I have mine at the 128Kbps and they are less than 30 seconds long. Mine are pretty basic and normal ones that I have. I don't like using any that have voices in them anymore like I use to have on my E715, P107, V206 phones.

Posted by: salty bob

there is no limit on song length or file size for ringtones, just as long as it fits onto your phones memory. also, changing the extention to 3gp only works for mp3 files, if you change the extention for an aac file to 3gp, the phone will have an error when you try to add it as a ringtone.

the best way ive found to put music on the phone is, due the the playlist caps at 30 songs, make 4 playlists on itunes. then, put 30 songs on each playist by highlighting them all with the ctrl button and dragging them over. then, in your phones music folder make 4 folders, and then in itunes, select all in each playlist, copy, then paste into each folder. this way its a lot easier to add music into playlists on the phone since everything will be nice and organized already. psh who needs the rokr. this IS the itunes phone.

Thanks man it worked like a charm.

Posted by: saigon69

when i try to select the options in the .3gp music file the phone restarts. Is that normal? I renamed a mp3 file to .3gp and put thephone in mass storage mode. Also does it not work because the length of the song is too long? The file was about 1,000kb+. DO i have to convert the music file into 15 seconds then change the file extension to .3gP? IM SO CONFUSED HELP ME!

Posted by: revenant

try a different mp3 to rename and use... sounds like that one you're trying to get set as the ringer has some strange encoding which is causing the phone to crash... just a guess.

Posted by: Who'syourdaddy?

Actually, the file might still be good but how you are placing it on the phone might be wrong. I personally have seen that there is no 30 or 35 second limit on ringtones. I uploaded one that a 1 minute and 28 seconds long and it still works. This is if you are using the USB cable provided with the phone.
1.The best way to go about it is by using the manage files icon on your Samsung PC Tools software.
2.Changes any .mp3 ringtones to .3gp.
3.Transfer the files to your folder called other files,(if you try to transfer to any other folder you will get an error for unknown file type)
4.Disconnect your phone from the computer.
5.Go into your file manager and into other files from your phone itself.
6.Find the file click options and move to memorry card.
7.Find the music folder and move it there.
8.Then go to the memory card, find the file in the music folder and once again select select options and move to phone.
9.Now you can go and use it as a ringtone.

Hope this helps you out.

Posted by: Bootbox

I just move the 3gp file to the 'sounds' folder on the memory card via the USB mass storage, then browse to it with the phone - file manager > memory card > sounds > set as ringtone.

QFT - just do the above.. works great. and there is no time limit on ringer files... in fact - I have been popping the microSD card out and putting the files directly onto that and then popping it back in, then the above proceedure - which works also if you don't want to have your phone hooked up via usb for whatever reason.

Taken from another forum. Enojoy

Quote:
-Edit your mp3 to the size you want (30 seconds is fine)
-Right click the file and rename the mp3 from .mp3 to .3gp
-make sure your phone is in "mass storage" mode (Phone Settings -> USB Settings)
-connect your phone to the computer with the supplied cable and copy over to your t-flash card
-unplug, find the file, and set as main ringer or caller id ringer

P.S. Are people having a problem with dust under the screen on their t809? That's the only thing holding me back atm.

Posted by: doctibby

After much reading and getting really frustrated, I found out how to use your own MP3's as ringtones. It is really easy once you do it. The only problem is that you will be limited to the number of MP3's you can use unless you edit the files using the studio software that came with the phone.

Here is a step by step for those who are novice just like me.

The Steps:
1. Go to where your .mp3 is located on your computer (ex. My Music)
2. Go to the Tools menu at the top
3. Click Folder Options
4. Click the View tab
5. Uncheck "Hide extensions for unkown file types"
6. Click Apply, then ok (now you should be able to see your songs as song.mp3
7. Right-click the .mp3 file you want
8. Rename, Make Sure to change the .mp3 to .3gp
9. Save (click yes)
10.Make sure your phone settings/USB Settings is set to mass storage so the memory card comes up
11.Plug your phone up to the USB cable
12.Copy the new .3gp to the Music part of your memory card. what I did was to make a new folder with all of the mp3 files I wanted on the phone and placed in a separate folder. From here I changed all the file extensions as described in step 8. Then I went to edit and hit select all. then I dragged and dropped into the music part of the memory card.
13. Unplug the cable then go to your phone menu/ Fun & Apps/ File Manager/ Memory Card/ Music
14. Find the song you want
15. Click Options/ (3) Set As/ (1) Ringtone
16. Press yes to copy to the phone and set as ringer
17. YOUR DONE!!!!

It works and it is just that easy. Enjoy!

There a few steps to us as follows but this does work.

The Steps:
1. Go to where your .mp3 is located (ex. My Music)
2. Go to the Tools menu at the top
3. Click Folder Options
4. Click the View tab
5. Uncheck "Hide extensions for unkown file types"
6. Click Apply, then ok
7. Right-click the.mp3 you want
8. Rename, Make Sure to change the .mp3 to .3gp
9. Save (click yes)
10.Make sure your phone settings/USB Settings is set to mass storage so the memory card comes up
11.Plug your phone up to the USB cable
12.Copy the new .3gp to the Music part ot your memory card
13. Unplug the cable then go to your phone menu/ Fun & Apps/ File Manager/ Memory Card/ Music
14. Find the song you want
15. Click Options/ (3) Set As/ (1) Ringtone
16. Press yes to copy to the phone and set as ringer
17. YOUR DONE!!!!

OK, I'm havin a little bit of trouble with my T-809. I am trying to figure out how to set an mp3 as the ringtone. The standard mp3 that the phone comes with "remedy" can be set as ringtone but any other mp3 that i load into the phone i cannot. I moved the mp3 onto the phone rather than the memory card and that didn't seem to work either!

if someone can please help me and knows the answer get back to me
Other than this one problem this phone is so tyte!!!
everyone out there who does not have one, GET ONE!

Posted by: J-t809

O.K Here you are.
Connect T-809 to PC (Set mass storage rather than modem).
You'll see it as a hard drive, open whatever folder that contain your .mp3 files, change the file extention of the one you like to be as a ringtone to .3gp
(Example: mysong.mp3---->mysong.3gp) You're done !!!!

Yup! I made a simple .BAT file, too, for those having trouble with renaming the MP3 files properly. I'll have it up on my site tonight!

I've been getting SO MANY MP3 questions in e-mail, I decided to make a simple batch file to help those who are having problems.

Download this file directly into the folder with the MP3 files you want to put on your phone. I recommend copying your MP3's into a temporary file to rename them. Double click the batch file, it takes about 1/2 second to run (you will get no message that it ran). Hit the F5 key to refresh the folder and the files will magically be 3GPs. Copy them to your phone.

E-mail me or post here if you have any questions. This only works with Windows PCs (any Windows PC) as I am not familiar with Mac or Linux scripting tools.

Works good, good job.

hi. how do i rename the file son.mp3 to song.3gp.

Posted by: t809SAM

MP3 Ring Tone Nows Works on T809
Thanks to T809.Blogspot.com on the renaming thing.
But moving it to the phone was vauge. So.......

T809SAM Work around to Move to The Phone...
NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't use the Samgung PC Suite to move the XXXXXXX.3gp to the phone!

Even though it let me rename it on my computer, When I went to MOVE to PHONE It detected something.

I had to use steps 1 - 10 to get it moved to the phone to work.

SO..
1 I setup my USB to STORAGE in the Setup Menu of the phone!
2 Then with MY COMPUTER I selected the Phone's Drive Letter.
3 Find the MUSIC Folder on the Phone. This is the MEMORY CARD! NOT THE PHONE!
4 Go to your Folder on your computer where your music is. Rename as Filename.mp3 - TO - Filename.3gp
5 Copy the Renamed file to the phone's Memory Card - folder - MUSIC.
6 Now here's the magic.
7 Unplug the phone from the cable & go to the phone's memory card folder:
MUSIC -Fun & APPS -FILEMANGER -MEMORY CARD -MUSIC Folder -OPTIONS .
8 Select the the Filename.3gp - Set as a Ringtone or Caller ID Ringtone!
9 It will ask to be moved to the phone... YES.
!0 ENJOY!!

Note:You can Dump your MP3's to the Memory Card Via Phone and then Rename them Via USB Storage then Move back to phone.

And I'm sure there are other ways also.
This just worked for me.

Again Enjoy!

Posted by: Eric R

Seems like a lot of working, considering all you need to do to get an MP3 ringtone to work is to select the greyed out MP3 anyways, OK it, Save It, go back and it's the ringtone.

Posted by: t809SAM

Not just the simple Ring Tone for the phone.
ALL.....
Caller ID and Group Ring Tones Can Now Be Set!
All Ring Tone Fuctions..

Posted by: Mango808

It's easier to just rename the *.mp3 extension to *.3gp while the file is on your computer, then transfer it to the phone either by using the TF/MicroSD card or sending it to the phone via bluetooth.

Posted by: t809SAM

Isn't that what I stated?
So you'll take the time in Swaping out the TRANSFLASH and using the adapter and ...................................takes more time. Eh?
Just Connect your Phone and use it as usb storage......
Well Read my post again....
Where Were You?
Everyone could of used that simple Info!
Keep it up!
And Thanks For Your Output..

Posted by: gnikxnitsud

How do i make mp3's to 3gp files so i can set them as ringtones?

Posted by: aznjoker2

can someone send me a thread that tells me how to convert my mp3 to a ringtone file as a .3gp file for a samsung t809...muchly appreciated

Posted by: Hate 2 Lose

you dont need to do that. I just got mine today and uploaded some mp3's to it and I just clicked on the grayed out name of the one I want, go back hit save, and it will still look like its the original ringtone, the next time you go back or you call yourself it will have the mp3 you chose as your ringtone.
