AIM and Email charging method?

I'm curious as to how AIM is charged on your phone bill (I have a Cingular Family Plan if that matters any). Does this count simply as text messages, or does it count as kb (a download), or something else? The same question goes for receiving email (although I am assuming that emails count as kb).
