Dust in my t809 Screen Already!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: dermer458

Anybody know how to get rid of the dust under my t809 screen? It looks like tiny little dot and its really annoying, especially when watching movies. How can I prevent this in the futrue?

Posted by: timpossible

There's a little bit of dust under mine, too, but I can only notice it when the screen is off... I hope it doesn't get worse and become annoying with the screen on. I think the only way to prevent dust in there is to use a case, rather than constantly sliding in and out of pockets. I still have 26 days to return it, so we'll see...

This is a sign that the phone is not very made or designed. I have the D500 and it has been under a lot of abuse. Yet the case is sealed tight and there is not a speck of dust underneath the plastic screen.

Posted by: chrisl82

Have you guys just been keeping it in your pockets? Thats where mine is most of the time and I've been ok, no dust, phone still looks mint. Hope it doesn't happen to mine. My brother's S200 gets dust under the screen too. He opened it up and sealed it with some electrical tape then put the cover back on. But I guess the T809 won't be so easy to open up haha

Posted by: Snowman

Ok so I've had the phone since Monday and it's mainly been in my pocket. I have now noticed that dust and lint has accumulated on the lcd screen under the plastic covering. This is pretty annoying because it's only been a couple of days and there's no way I can clean it.

This happen to anyone else?

Posted by: revenant

yikes... that happened to my i730 motorola and it was damned annoying... I have had my t809 in my pocket a LOT and so far nothing has gotten in there... but I did read somewhere that some others had also gotten some lint in there though.. I think the LCD seal on many of these phones can be hit and miss for it really working or not... or it would seem that way... I am inspecting my phone daily for anything tho...

Posted by: timpossible

I keep mine in my pockets, usually clean dress slacks... I handle the phone gently... and yet, there are more and more specks of dust accumulating every day! It is now noticeable with the screen on, and I'm a little concerned since it's only been 5 days. I have about 25 days left to return it, so we shall see. D500 & D600 owners: this dust under the screen thing is not a problem for you at all?

Hasn't been a problem for me and my D600, D415 or E635 sliders. I keep my phones in a pouch type holster with a top flap that secures with velcro.

Posted by: Snowman

Yeah at first it didn't bother me but wheneever the background is white it is easily visible. It seems to all be near the top of the screen so maybe there is a hole there.

Also on mine when it's slid up, I can push the screen back a little meaning it bends. This is annoying because it constantly creaks when I"m talking on the phone and I hold the phone to my head.

Posted by: Snowman

Yeah I've got dust under mine too. I keep mine all the time in my pockets.

Posted by: inno55man

it probably gets in from the earpiece. you can try to blow it out

Posted by: peechylyfe

Well i had the first of my T809's for 4 days and the dust under the top left corner of screen got so bad that it spread across... i returned it today. The new one that i got - After 4 mins of living in my pocket did the same exact thing! What the heck is going on?!?! did i just happen to get two crappy phones? Is this a common problem with this one? Please tell me that my phones were just not sealed properly. Anyone having this issue or know what i should do? I mean i guess i can just return the phone after 13 days of use and keep getting new ones...

Posted by: anarchy57

I dont have this problem and Ive had my 809 for a lil over a week now.

Posted by: Snowman

Yes same place on mine too. It's clearly visible when the screen is on. Upper left hand corner. I had the phone for a week now.

Posted by: braindead5400

try washing your pants with the pockets pulled out so you can get the lint out of them

Posted by: jkalina

How hard was it to exchange your phone @ a TMobile Store?

Posted by: peechylyfe

All i had to do in order to return the phone was just show them the problem and they swaped it out for a new one. Just make sure you take the original box. and all of the materials with you.

Posted by: revenant

That's great news they are being cool about it... whew.

Posted by: timpossible

Went to the T-Mobile store today to complain about the dust problem and ask what they could do. Aside from offering to swap for another T809, they also offered to take my T809 back and refund the $300 +tax I paid, and then give me either a Nokia 6101 or Samsung T309 for $49, or a Motorola V360 for $99. I figure I'll take one of those phones temporarily and then Ebay it when I decide on some other hot high end phone without a dust problem...

Posted by: Charbo

this is starting to happen on mine too, its not bad yet or anything but does anyone know if you can get it out or maybe put something in the phone to seal it better?

Posted by: Mango808

I mentioned in another thread that I think the open area is under the rotating camera head. If you rotate it slowly, you will be able to see a white piece and part of the LCD inside if you're looking from the back. I don't think Samsung really noticed this or made anything to "seal" it from getting dust/dirt down this opening.

I'm just lucky at the moment that I haven't gotten any dust in mine yet.

Posted by: Charbo

maybe i can get a can of compressed air and blwo it out from there then .

Posted by: dermer458

Wirelessly posted (MOT-V360/08.B7.86R MIB/2.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

i finally gave up... it was just getting worse and worse. i took my t809 to an indirect store and they took it back no problem. i got a v360 and absolutely love it.

Posted by: dada21

I had a v360 and had to give it to the lady because it drove me MAD. She loves it, I hated it. My t809 works much better for me -- odd how two different people can have two different love/hate relationships with the same devices

Have we confirmed that dust is only coming from people carrying their t809's in their pockets?

Posted by: Charbo

ya i carry it in my pocket, if i can get that dust out or something i will probly get a case for it though.

Posted by: timpossible

What's the point of having a super-thin phone if you have to carry it in a case that adds bulk? I'm so mad about the dust in my T809... I love everything else about it, but dust getting under the screen is just unacceptable. I think I'm going to exchange for a v360.

Posted by: burbboy78

Wow - Ok, I just purchased this phone like 10 days ago - having massive issues with the dusty screen - just got a new one in the mail - SAME EXACT THING after five minutes. This thing is going back. That's a shame too since it's a really sweet phone.

SIGH

Posted by: dada21

I carry mine in a satin-lined pocket -- no dust. The other day I finally stuck it in my jeans, dust after a few hours. The dust doesn't annoy me yet, but it seems to me that the cure for dust is to keep it away from linty pockets. I won't get a case for mine, and if it gets too dusty I'll exchange it with T-Mobile. They've always happily exchanged phones.

I'm on the verge of taking mine apart to see how I can clean it. Wish me luck

Posted by: tzimisce

You guys just made me decide not to get this phone. I loved the look and everything of it but the dust on LCD is terrifying... Now I`ve got to save couple of bucks and get D600... Or perhaps is it possible to seal the hole under rotating camera that is causing the trouble in t809?

Posted by: aaf evo

ive had my t809 for over a week now, and still no dust in the screen, it stays in my pocket almost all the time, if this helps, i have teh camera rotaded facing away from me.

Posted by: cth

I had dust between the LCD and faceplate the other day. Slide the face up and use some canned air between the glossy and matte pieces on the back.

Posted by: Charbo

i got the dust out with compressed air like cth said.

Posted by: braindead5400

My concern would then be whether or not I got the dust out or just moved it. Eventually, the dust would start to pile up inside the phone if I kept blowing into the same place

Posted by: carrerf

I've sealed the small gap below the camera with tape, of course I can't rotate the camera to face me now, but I rarely used it for self-portraits. I also bought a screen protector on ebay it was custom cut, the only gripes about the protector is that is anti-glare, which means it isn;t crystal clear on the screen. No dust in mine yet, hopefully the seal below the camera does the trick.

can you post a pic of where you blew the air in? i have blasted every crack i can see on the back with canned air and the dust has not moved at all.

i also keep my t809 in my pocket all of the time. this has never been a problem with any of my other phones. i am slightly tempted to open the phone and try to blast it again.

Posted by: jonneepuh

yea me too, ive been blasting my phone with canned air and cant find the right place to blow out the dust. Could you please post a pic and diagram of where you blew the dust out, also where exactly did you put tape. thanks for the help.

Posted by: anarchy57

Dang, after 3-4 weeks with this phone, I finally got some dust in the LCD
I thought i was one of the lucky ones with a good seal, guess I was wrong haha

Posted by: evilninja

Blowing air in every orifice of the phone, and the top two corners where there is a steam of dust, hasn't moved. I think the area to blow in is where the camera swivels, so I've tilted the cam a little, and blew lots of canned air in there. No luck blowing the dust though. Also tried behind the sliding mechanism. You can see the piston used to assist the slide, blew everywhere, but still dust.

Posted by: dada21

Compressed air seemed to work for me, but it didn't remove the dust -- it just blew it to the side. Now C/A doesn't work at all!

I've tried a few static tricks which also seemed to move the dust into larger clumps but I can't get it out. I don't have excessive dust as I store my phone in a satin-lined pocket. I even attemped to take apart the phone but can't get to the plastic inside.

I've had dust with every PDA I've ever owned, so I'm not bothered by the minor amount I got from the one day I put the phone in my jeans.

Posted by: evilrome0

ok i love the phone, all the nay sayers can really suck... my issue is that right in the center of the screen i have a few specks of dust.

mind you, when i used flash it showed a LOT more specs. i can only see 1-2 specs with the naked eye. if this much dust is in my phone from just 1 day i can only imaging half a year from now.

Posted by: braindead5400

wow, that sucks. I'm glad I don't have that problem

Posted by: Mango808

Still no dust in my T809, going on almost a full month with it.

Posted by: dada21

Did you try putting a piece of tape over the hole beneath the swivel camera?

Posted by: Roller_G

I know how you feel. I love the phone to much to give it up. Try covering the back right corner. When I opened mine and cleaned it I sealed that corner with silicone. No dust yet.

Posted by: |Cleric|

had the phone for about 5 days and mine looks worse than the pics but its allin the top quater so it goes back

Posted by: evilrome0

so now on #2,

i noticed that the gap where the dust was getting in the first phone seems to be smaller. also the slide function is a loot crisper. it would catch before, now it slides almost like my old d415

Posted by: xworld23

It seems like they are upgrading it... its like everything new... it has it bugs but i recomend you still to put duct tape on the gap.. when i got dust on my second t809 i just said thats it.. you know it looks sexy ok but the dust is unacceptable for something that is $250+ and if it was after 6 months ok but i am talking days!...

Posted by: HX_Guy

Just kidding but really, I'm trying to understand something here so maybe someone can enlighten me.

I've seen multiple people on here going to extreme lengths to keep dust out of the t809's screen...from taping up the hole under the camera to stuffing it with something or trying to protect the screen by using clear packing tape...

Here is the think I don't get...a little dust or a small scratch bother you, but having a piece of tape on your phone or tape all over the screen is ok?
What is the purpose of protecting this stuff...so the phone stays looking new for months? Then what...if you never use the phone without these bandaids on them...why does it even matter if they stay new?

Posted by: xworld23

you are right man.. thats what made me return my 2 phones... Why pay so much for tapes and stuff... for people with the same issue i will say just return it and get onother phone for around 300$ + expend the contract for a free phone...

Posted by: AKT6168

This phone is terrible! Well what I mean to say is the dust getting under the screen is terrible. I am on my 2nd t809 and the screen is nothing but a dust collector. I get flippin dust under the screen after only 5 days. I kept it in a Oakley sunglasses microfiber pouch in my pocket and it still didn't help. I am taking this one back for good and picking something else. I'll probably end up getting the RAZR since T-Mobile has no other good phones in the store. I would consider the PEBL but you can only get that one online. I think Samsung quality control should be shot on site for letting this phone get out to the public like this.

Posted by: Mango808

Going on a month a half with no dust. No modifications or tape.

Posted by: sl33p

Anyone else not have the dust problem? It seems like 99 % has the dust problem.

Posted by: shhhpark

got dust after 2 days

Posted by: braindead5400

I have no dust, but I put a very small piece of clear scotch tape over the hole under the camera. I don't really consider it a hassle, I can still rotate the camera and since the tape is clear, you have to be close to notice it.

Why anyone would use duct tape is beyond me, the phone is black, just use either black tape or clear tape, its thinner than duct tape and blends in with the phone.

I personally don't have a problem with paying $300 for the phone and having to use a small piece of tape to make sure that dust doesn't get in. I mean, yea Samsung messed up with this, but its a minor and easily fixed problem. Not to mention the fact that $300 is a pretty decent price, if the D820 had come out first, it'd be a whole lot more (the T809 is $400 retail I believe but I'm sure the D820 would've been at least $500 initially)

Posted by: Myster.E

This thread should be forwarded to Samsung's customer service and/or tech dept. I have been going back and forth trying to decide wheter I should purchase this phone. At this time, I just don't want to deal with the frustration and disappointment others are experiencing.

I'm now seriously considering the newly released Razr v3i instead. Don't know if I want to wait for Samsung to revise the T809 design flaw...if they even ever get around to it.

Posted by: mastercell2

I have the same problem on my Razr .......... Hearing this is kind of disappointing as I was planning to get the T809 for my collection...... Maybe it's happening to all the slim phones.........

Posted by: Mango808

Wirelessly posted (Mango808: SAMSUNG-SGH-T809/T809UVEJ9 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Browser/6.2.3.3.c.1.101 (GUI) MMP/2.0)

Maybe $600 as the D600 retailed at $699 when it first came out.

Posted by: Myster.E

I just now sent an email complaint to Samsung regarding this issue. Not sure if it's a big enough problem for them to find a remedy. But maybe if others complain as well, they will fix the design flaw.

This is what I sent...

Re: SGH-T809
Hello,
Is anyone @ Samsung aware of the design flaw that is allowing for dust to collect under the display screen? This appears to be a common complaint of new T809 owners, and is keeping many potential buyers away (myself included). I have visited several mobile phone internet forums, and every one of them contain numerous complaints about how this dust problem is causing people to return their t809 phones. A simple Google search for "t809 dust" will demonstrate the frequency and frustration of this issue. If there is a simple fix to this problem, I will be first in line to buy one. THANKS!

I wonder if I'll get a reply

Posted by: detwetter

I've had my phone for a week now, and no dust. My only real complaint about the phone is the Incremental ringer. Well, make it two things, I also don't like that there is no repeating reminder alerts for unanswered voicemail. Two small complaints. I really like this phone a lot!

Posted by: xworld23

Yea me personally i am glad that i returned my dusty ones.... Now that i got the D600 i am happy ... The Dust was the Major reason but now that the price of the t809 is going down so much.. (i almost paid 250$ + 2 year contract..) ..so its all good.. but if you dont have dust its still a good phone... some things miss but hey you can`t get everything...
PEACE

Posted by: evilrome0

so i brought back my second t809 because of massive amounts of dustage. they gave me another. if this one is just as bad im just gona get my $ back and use my old x105.

Posted by: QwietStorm

I don't understand how some of u people are getting so much dust in your phone. I wish someone would post a picture of a dust-ridden model. Where do u keep it and how do u handle it throughout the day?

Posted by: Mango808

I don't understand it either. I've had my T809 for a month and a half and still no dust has gotten into my phone.

Posted by: KhurramA

You guys with the dust problems should try washing your jeans more often

Posted by: evilrome0

comming from the d415 i love sliders but this thing is just keeps rubbing me the wrong way .

are there any other good sliders out there?

Posted by: touyakoyo

depends how u store ur phone,
ur gonna get dust in any phone if u keep it in ur pocket (always dusty), and not buy any accessories for it like case, screen protector.

Posted by: HX_Guy

I've gotten a couple specs of dust and my girlfriend who has the same phone has had the same thing happen, but really, its nothing that bothers us one bit. You can see it when the screen is blank, but when it's lit up...no sign of dust, so who cares.

Posted by: KhurramA

So i just picked up the phone an hour ago, love it, great phone...question is i Heard someone here say you can put a piece of tape over the hole by the camera to prevent dust,

where is that hole? I can't see or it access it...how do I get to it?
Thanks

Posted by: [IFC]Area51

People like they're phones to be pampered and untouched " me included " but sometimes there is nothing we can do to avoid manufactures bad casing/sealing housings/models.

Posted by: gizmo2431

i've gained a nice amount of dust in mine after havin it for bout 2 months now... i figure i'll let it keep gaining until i can't tolerate it anymore and then complain for a new one.... for those of you that dont understand it... i'll post a pic of how bad mine has gotten recently later on tonite.....

Posted by: silentblu

ok, i've got the perfect solution, with some time, tweezers, and saran wrap your problem is fixed, for me the gap in the camera portion was pretty big at least a good 1mm big, and after i got a fairly large white speck of dust it made me want to fix it, below are some pictures of the done work, not hard, temp/perm fix really you can hardly tell the saran wrap is there other then the back if you can get ALL of the air bubbles out it'd be a pretty perfect fix

pictures are kinda blury from the flash

Posted by: silentblu

oh yea on mine i had two holes, the camera gap, and the one on the hinge on the back right, that one was fairly small, and i didn't see much dust coming from that corner but i bunched up some of my wasted saran wrap and stuffed it in there, cutting the saran wrap was the hardest and fitting it perfectly across was hard, the opening of hte camera is exactly 9/16th of an inch, lil over half an inch

Posted by: QwietStorm

silentblu, do you keep yours in your pocket too?

Posted by: AKT6168

I'm sorry but to go to such extremes to keep dust out of a phone seems really silly (it was bad enough for me to spend $$$ on a Oakley micro fiber pouch that didn't stop the dust). I get the idea that you like the phone but hate the dust but it still seems over the top to have to put Saran wrap on a $300 phone. I have been very happy since I returned my t809 and got the v360. The v360 has most all of the same features as the t809 just not as refined. After returning two t809's for dust problems I had enough. The funny thing is people keep talking about the dust getting in under the camera near the top right corner. I never got dust on that side of the screen. The dust on mine was in the upper left part of the screen, opposite from the camera area so I don't think the saran wrap idea would have worked for me. To be honest, now that I have had my v360 for awhile I don't miss the cool factor of the t809 anymore. At first I was totally bummed that I had to settle for the v360 but it is actually a really nice phone even though it is a little more utilitarian compared to the t809, I just feel like I can use it and not be afraid that it will break just holding it in my hand. I was always nervous using the t809 as it seemed so delicate. I guess the t809 just wasn't for me.

Posted by: Xx_Joey_xX

you guys do your self a favor .. not just for the t809 which i just got
but any phone that nice a big screen ..

go to your local office max and get LCD screen covers .. you can size them to any size you want and they work really well .. they protect the screen from scratches dust and other crap you dont want to get in there ..
they cost about $5 to 10 its really worth it

Posted by: detwetter

They are not talking about dust on the screen, but rather dust Behind their screens.

Posted by: j0hnnyp

i just got the t809 4 days ago and already i can see the dust! theres a line of dust about 1 cm long coming in from the top left of the screen.

Posted by: xworld23

Wow ! So Many People Complaning... Unbelivable... Somebody Send This Post To Samsung And T-mobile...

Posted by: silentblu

yea i keep my t809 in my pocket, i used to keep it in an oakley case like AKT, but it was too much of a hassle to take it out of the case and such, i only kept it in the oakley case because i didn't keep my oackleys in the case, hahah, and i foudn out the microfiber case which also serves as a cleaning cloth for oakleys don't work very well for hte phone, so no real point in useing it. i haven't actually used the v360, but
1.) personally i hate motorolas, for their overall use and cause they cancelled the MPX/MPX-300, i've used the razr, pebl, v600, most of their phones, but never actually kept them, my parents actually have the razrs
2.) i think the t809 is a lot lighter and smaller
3.) the screen is so much bigger and nicer

for joey, look at the pictures before you speak, its not an actual screen protector, i'm usually pretty careful with my phones, no scratches or anything, might get one for my psp not sure

ive done the lcd cover it did nothing. ill bet the dust is IN the camera to begin with. ive had 3 t809s all had dust comming from the top left. this is stupid... i love samsung phones but common its $300. perhaps ill just buy another d415

Posted by: silentblu

its not in the screen, theres a gap in the camera part, if you twist the camera around in the dark with the lcd on you can see light coming from it, theres another hole/gap in the sliding rail, if you look at it from the back its on the right rail

I am amazed at the lack of quality of the phone where this dust issue is concerned. I am currently in Saudi Arabia and I took out my brand new T809 from the box yesterday and went to a meeting with it in my pocket. When I got back after a couple of hours and pulled the phone out, lo and behold, dust had collected under the screen!

I mean...W.T.F?

I know this is a sandy kingdom, but COME ON!

And yes, my pants were CLEAN.

Doesn't matter how clean you think they were, in Saudi/Kuwait/Iraq, the sand/dust is very fine in some places and will seep into anything.

You need to look for a Ziplock bag to keep it clean and from getting any worse.

I know this is a tired subject, I must have seen hundreds of threads about this but I didnt think itd happen to my phone, but like a few weeks of having it, I had dust in the top lefthand corner! I dont remember finding a solution. Anyone have one. OH and I think I have a theory about how the dust gets there.. could it be from that mysterious little hole at the top of the phone? Everyone says the same thing, the dust is on the top left of the screens, where the hole is. Hmmm..

That sucks I wanted this phone to.

t-mobile will replace this, its a defect, ive already gotten a new phone for free from them

Posted by: nickyd79

I am a T-mobile rep and have used a couple T809's. I have one, and recently won a second in a contest at work. My girlfriend has one as does my brother. I am almost 100% sure it is not the hole around the camera that is letting the dust in but rather it is coming in right there above the left corner. I have one that has no dust after 2 whole months, and another that has dust after only a short time. Both regularly kept in jean pockets. If you look at them both at a side angle,(like your looking at the charging port), the one that has no dust, the screen is flush or below the casing. The one that has dust, the screen is slightly protruding. When i say protruding i mean like a fraction of a milimeter. And this seems to be the case for everyone that has dust under the screen. Everyone that I have seen that doesn't have dust the screen is nicely embedded in the casing. If you look down the left corner of your T809 and can see the corner of the screen at all then chances are your T809 will have dust underneath eventually.

got sick of the dust... returned my 3rd t809... now using my s105

how did you get them to replace it? did you call their customer service or brought it into the store?

Two months still no dust.

My T809's screen is flushed so I guess it's one of the better made one.

My T809 screen is not flash, and I have no dust. 3 months and counting now. There goes another theory.

Posted by: rEVOLVE

Everyone who has dust under their LCD, please try this:
go into a pitch black room, open your t809 slider and the light from the lcd & keypad will "leak" through any small holes in the phone. There must be no other light in the room as this phone is so glossy that it will reflect other light sources and the reflections will fool you into thinking they are holes also.

I actually see another "hole/gap" on the back/side of the phone opposite the camera side. On the right-side as you are facing the back of the phone, there is an indented "track" for the slider.
At the top of this track where the bulge that holds the camera meets the skinny part is where I see a small pinhole of light.

To best see it I would hold the slider open and view it from the bottom of the phone with the back facing up. Imagine a horizontal geometric plane starting from your eye and extending away. The open phone is flat (w/ LCD facing down) on this plane which through the bottom and out of the top of the phone and you slowly rotate the phone clockwise on this plane so the top right starts to come closer to your eye and the bottom moves away to the left. On my phone I will eventually see the little pinhole of light from the gap in the casing.

Does anyone else have this "hole"?

Posted by: ilovepunani

damn...i hear all these people having their 3rd, 4th...phones, people returning, getting new ones...blah blah, i've had mine for over 2 months and there's not a single dust..

ps: and yes it's in my pocket at times, but i do have a holster for it soo i dunno if that'll help. maybe yall should invest in some.

the only thing i don't like about it, is the battery life sucks. i turn down all the displays on the minimum settings too, even turn down the volume, and i try to refrain from using the speaker.

anyways it's still awesome because of the huge screen.

I also have it and this "hole" was brought up a while ago in this same thread. I think every T809 have this "hole" and it's just the way this phone was built. Maybe Samsung didn't catch it during Q/A testing or did but didn't thought anything of it. However, I frankly believe that this "hole" is where all the dust is going in; not the earpiece and not the gap from the rotating camera that everyone is taping up. It is directly next to or behind the left upper screen area where the all the dust is accumulating so it only make sense that the "hole" is the most logical source of incoming dust. When you see the light from the LCD leaking out of this "hole," you'll realize that it's quite big and easy for dust to get through.

Personally I thought my screen didn't have any dust in it and boy was I wrong. For all the people who say that they don't have any dust, you should get a small flash light and when the LCD is off, hold it close to the screen and shine it directly onto the LCD. You will see everything single spec of dust/dirt/crap that has accumulated inside. My LCD even have small fingerprint on it which I'm guessing is from one of the person assembling the phone. Dust sooner or later will eventually find its way into everything.

Posted by: ilovepunani

uh negative, i have no dust inside my screen at the moment and yes i've inspected it carefully, and true, dust will eventually find its way into everything.

but then again, i'm on here cause i'm just surprised at how many of yall have this problem, and to also find out what to do or prevent from getting dust in MY phone.

Posted by: QwietStorm

when asked, it seems as though most of the people with the dust problem have no holster and/or keep their phone in jean pockets, which I would never think to do in the first place. I have no dust in my phone at all and it looks the same way it did when I bought it. this particular model obviously attracts more dust inside than the average cell phone but it in the end, it all has to do with how u take care of it. I don't understand what it is that people are doing because I have no dust at all, whereas other are already on their 3rd phone

Posted by: rEVOLVE

Actually the dust doesn't bother me too much (yet) as you can only barely see it on my phone when the backlight is off. I had the same problem w/ an HP PDA years ago.

It is just annoying that you can spend so much money on a phone and it can have these types of flaws on it.

My first T809, I kept in my pocket and had the dust in 3 days. It was bad. It was coming in from both upper corners. I received another T809 and this time I kept it out of my pockets unless I had it in a ziplock bag. I did this to see if it was the pocket thing and it wasn't. I am starting to get dust in the new phone again, however, it is just a little bit from the upper right hand corner. I have a case on its way, but it is to late. Even with the case, I think dust will still get in. I've emailed Samsung, but have had no reply. That was about 3 weeks ago. I think the problem is with the design of the phone itself. A $250 cell phone should be able to withstand the harsh conditions inside a pocket! On a higher note, I spoke to a TMobile Rep the other day and told him about the problem everyone is having. He even googled t809 dust and was shocked. He said he was going to let the right people know about it. He was very concerned since he just ordered the phone for himself. This is just a shame. The phone is such a kick *** phone. I love everything about it. Sorry so long. -David

i got my phone yesterday around 4pm, and didn't notice any dust until i came across this thread. now it's about 4:30pm one day later and the top right and left corners of the screen has accumulated a substantial amount of dust. it looks like 2 spotlights coming down diagonally from the corners. any easy fix for this yet?

Posted by: alphadigitalx

i love this phone, but hate the dust

Posted by: QwietStorm

lol this is starting to be hilarious..'i got my fone and 2 days later i have the dust,' 'i thought i was fine and now i have the dust,' 'i had my fone for 86 minutes and it accumulated huge amounts of the dust' ...are u people even being serious anymore or are u just making the thread more dramatic? and the price of the phone has nothing to do with dust getting inside, its the design. anything with open seams can get dust into it.

for the people who have exchanged their phones, are u going to the stores you bought them from and they just hand you a new one?

i bought mine on ebay and it isn't here yet, but this dust stuff is scaring me. Since i bought it on ebay that means i can't exchange it for other ones right?

Posted by: alphadigitalx

i'm not kidding, i'm kinda pissed about the dust, but i'm loving the phone and it's features! the menu and navigation could have been more 'user friendly', but after playing around with it for a day or so, it seems to be okay... but the dust... errrr dust...

I've heard people talk about the menu system. what about it do you think could be more user friendly?

Posted by: jonneepuh

i think it is just hit and miss, my first phone had dust in it within a few days. I exchanged it and this new one hasnt got any for 2 months.

i'm wondering this as well, i have never exchanged a phone before, but since the dust problem i'm seriously thinking about bringing it in for a new one(i've had it for about a week and a half now), still have the box, and everything it came with, including the reciept of course.

guys good news! i just called into t-mobile because i planned on returning my t809 for a replacement because of the dust problem. She told me it's actually not on the list of known problems for the phone. She's joining howardforums.com and she's going to inform whoever she can about the problem. hopefully we'll see something done soon about fixing the "known" issues. She actually told me to apply for sales and she'd refer me haha sweet

It's not as intuitive as many other phones. I found bluetooth under the settings menu, rather than a Connections menu or something. File manager is one of my biggest dislikes of the phone. I've had the phone for 2 days, and I find the file manager to be a big confusion. There's multiple locations for pictures/photos. One thing I'm not sure if it's just me unable to find it, but the shortcut keys cannot be reassigned. I can't switch menu/phonebook on the main screen. The keypad is kind of hard to press sometimes. Especially when I'm typing a txt msg. A person with bigger fingers may find the keypad to be very uncomfortable to press. It's recessed into the phone. Overall, I think the menu could be organized a whole lot better.

I hope that helps, I"m not very good at explaining, but feel free to contribute

i got my phone from amazon.com... any idea on whether i should call tmobile or amazon to get an exchange? anyone else order from amazon?

Posted by: jdub765

Dust started getting in my first phone on the first day, so I exchanged it. The slider was nicer on my second phone, but dust started getting in again on the first day.

I tried plugging the hole on the back in the top corner where I could see light coming through using silicone, but dust kept getting in. So, I opened up the phone, and sealed aroudn the top of the LCD w/ silicone, and closed the phone back up. Dust started getting back in from the same spot, which leads me to believe that the dust is getting in somehow through the front.

I went to the TMobile store that I bought it from because I wanted to just return the phone, but I was out of my 30 day grace period. The only option I had was to order a warranty replacement and pay the $10 shipping. The only consolation I got was that the guy at TMobile was aware of the dust problem, and ordered a new phone for me immediately.

its cool, I get what u mean but I guess you would have to have experience with many different cell phone phone OSes to come to that conclusion because I really hanve't had much of an issue with this phone.

I haven't had the dust problem yet, but I also got my phone from amazon.com I asked them once if I had a problem what should I do and they said the warranty is directly with Tmobile. I can't remember the return period on the phone.

just got back from exchanging my t809(for a new one), the sales rep. told me that the dust is getting in through the camera(which we all pretty much knew already), she said if i left the lense alone(meaning not rotating it) then i shouldn't have a problem with dust getting in...but what do they know right?

btw..why does the lense flip? what's the purpose for it?.

Posted by: alphadigitalx

yeh good point, when i flip the lense towards myself, it takes pix upside down...!

newbie question... uh i'm guessing you just got the phone and haven't played around with it much, you can adjust that with the volume buttons on the side, that should answer your probs.

Posted by: break-r

im actally intrigued by the looks of this phone
even though i've never reallly been a big fan of samsung..i may end up trading my 6270 for a T809..

..but then im reading about dust problems..

Posted by: nflsonic

So before I purchase this phone in a couple of days, I should stay clear of putting this phone in my pocket to avoid dust getting in? I am assuming that most people put their phones in their pockets, so does this hold true to most of you?

To take self portraits. Press the side Up/Down button to flip the image in the screen to display it correctly before taking the picture.

Posted by: kloquewerk

for those of you who think we're being "over dramatic" about the dust problem...here is what mine looks like. Keep in mind this is UNDER the screen not on top:

I bought mine from someone on Ebay and it was like this already. Now if I can find a way to clean it out I'm sure I can prevent it from happeneing again.

i don't speak for everyone, but i'm on my second t809(about a week since the exchange), kept the first one in pocket at all times and within 3 days dust started to get under the screen...have yet to put second phone in my pocket and it's been dust free for about 6 days, so i'm guessing investing in a case would be the smart thing to do.

What type of case do you use? Have been looking for one.

Can you please post a pic?

i use a case from samsung... havent gotten any dust since.

Thanks johnnyp! ! !

I finally cleaned the dust from under my screen today. I decided to just take off the front LCD lens with an exacto knife. just pry under the lens and gently lift. looks brand new again.

Posted by: jsn117

so any real solutions without a fullon case?

the way I did it was a got my fingernail to get in between the side of the lens and the phone itself near the top right corner below the camera. if you can get your fingernail in there and kinda pull up on it you can slip a thin object (exacto knife, razor for example) in there and start prying up slowly. once you break the seal of the adhesive that's holding the lens in you can GENTLY lift up the lens so it comes loose from each corner. do this slowly and gently and you should be good to go.

Did you have to use any adhesive when you put the lens back on the screen???

Posted by: kloquewerk

no, the adhesive tape that was on there was still sticky so you can just push the lens back in and it should be fine

How so? Because the seal might not be tight? I will watch it over the next week or so and see if dust collects in there again, and if it does then I can reseal it tighter.

Why aren't people listening and trusting ME and kloquewerk??? It's absolutely simple to do and I do it everytime I need to clean the LCD of dust! Just do as stated; get a exact-o knife, or in my case, I used a stainless steel dentist tooth pick thingy. Open the phone and slowly and gently pulled up that whole silvery square, marked with the word Motorola. It comes up and off with no problem, clean it and place it back on. There's adhesive holding it and it will reattach flawlessly! Trust us, it's simple and I guaratee you'll be emailing us to thank us and ask why it took you so long to do it!!! IT'S SIMPLE and WORK PERFECT!!!

Or in this case since we're talking about the Samsung t809, it's the part that says SAMSUNG :P

I would just try to keep the transflash and battery slots closed tight. Iv noticed when I thought they were closed but really werent, that I could see light comming from withing the phone. Anyone figure out what the hole is on top of the phone?

WOW
i just got my 809 today and was looking for tips and tricks on how to use this phone, but this thread pop up to me and starting to scare me -_-..

is lifting the LCD plastic esay? i am afriad i might break it.

blowing air duster sounds like will push the dust off the screen but it will still stay inside the phone..

have anyone try sucking the dust out instead of blowing air into the phone??

i hope my phone is the 1% that wont get dust in it

buy a case and try to keep from putting it in your pocket,
also tried lifting the screen with a knife, had no problems(as long
as your careful).

i really hate cell phone cases. the whole point of having a thin phone is being able to carry it in your pocket IMHO.

is there a way to "seal" up the dust leaks? crazy glue? i checked out a dummy t809 today and really like it.

ditto, adding a case would be like swaping the phone for a bigger, clunkier, harder to get to one.

How do you use the knife to lift the phone?? Where do you do it? How much pressure do you put on it? Details would be great thanks. Also, pictures would be nice too. For the sake of other readers please explain step by step as if we were idiots. lol thanks.
