Best Speakerphone on Cingular is...?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've recently come over from VZW and am used to good quality speakerphones like the V60 series. I've been disappointed so far on Cingular:

1. The RAZR has it's speakerphone on the bottom back so you cover it with your hand every time you use it muffling the sound! (Moto seems to be doing this with other phones as well).

2. The Moto V551/557 has a terrible "round" speakerphone that's not loud enough even at the highest settings.

3. The Nokia's are too tinny at the highest volumes as are the LG's.

Yikes? What phone has the best, good quality, loud-when it needs to be without distortion, clear sounding speaker phone?

The only thing I've come up with so far as the PTT phones (because they generally have a better speaker phone anyway for PTT) and the ROKR which has excellent speakers but no features (oh- did I say, voice dial would be nice).

[As a side note, it seems to me that maybe Speakerphones are going the way of the car kit- Blue Tooth headsets seem to be replacing speakerphones as the important feature. Perhaps those of use who were 'raised' on speakerphones have to get used to going Spock. But how sad since both speakerphones and headsets both have their applications]

SE z520a has a pretty good speakerphone. The speaker is at the top of the back, and has pretty good volume.

I have tried almost all of the speakerphones available for Cingular and here is what I have found. In a basic no frills phone the Nokia 3120 has the best of the Nokia speakerphones. The next level for me was to the S/E Z500a, very good front facing speakerphone. I then tried an S/E Z520a, speakerphone on the back and way too low volume for me. I tried a Nokia 6102, again too low of volume for me. I tried a Samsung X497, too low again. I am now using a RAZR, but I have edited the gain tables for increased volume from the speakerphone, it is on par with the S/E Z500a now. I have read reports that the speakerphone on the S/E W600i is very good but have not had a chance to try one yet, thats next. The S710a is also suppose to have a good speakerphone.

For me : it's the ROKR's speakerphone. I also like the speakerphone in RAZR as well.

Thanks for that detailed reply. I also had a RAZR, but Moto for some bizzare reason but the speaker on the back bottom of the thing so that everytime I held it in my hand or put it down on a desk the speaker was covered muffling the sound. Doesn't that bother you?

the Nokia 6102's speaker volume is a bit too low also. I think that the LG C2000 had a fairly good speakerphone on it, as did the Sony Ericsson S710a.

After changing the settings in the gain table for all the audio ouputs I have no problem at all using the speakerphone under any circumstances.

Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: Nokia6682/2.0 (3.01.1) SymbianOS/8.0 Series60/2.6 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

For me the 6682 is pretty good.

First step for me was to get Mobile Phone Tools 3.28 and a USB cable for the V3. I then installed MPT and started to get comfortable transfering pictures and ringtones back and forth on my phone. I then went to motomodders.net, signed up and downloaded P2KTools. I then read all the info I could find and asked a few questions from the helpfull members here(Thanks andyahs!), after that, opening the gain table settings and adjusting them was easy. I turned all the volume settings up from 01 to 03 and the volume for earpiece, speakerphone and ringtones are perfect for me even in loud environments. I did go higher at first with the settings, they can go to 08, but after a couple of tries 03 is fine. I got the USB cable and MPT from Ebay for about $12.00 shipped, worked perfect first time.

can you use those same programs with a bluetooth connection or do you need the USB?

P2KTools, which is what can change the volume, requires a USB cable.

the 6682 had the best speakerphone imo

Yea... speakerphones seem to be going away. With a cheap and free Sprint Sanyo phone it works quite well, not only hearing a call while in a car but people listening to you hear the call almost as good as when not using it. I am hard of hearing so it's important to me but I haven't found any GSM phones that compare. The same applies to ringer volume.

I have come to the conclusion that Moto etc. is after battery life or cheaper amp/speakers for profit.

I have done an edit to my v 551 and it's louder but distorted.

Don't know why you have problem with V3 speaker. I have Silver V3. I put it down on my puter desk while I'm talking on speaker. No voice problems at all. Plus speaker on s710 is very good too.

my vote would have to go with either the Razr or the W600. I own (or have owned) both of these phones and their speakerphone quality is/was excellent.

Posted by: suddenstop

I also have the treo 650 and think it has a pretty good speakerphone...

Posted by: bodeh6

The W600i speaker is tons better then the speaker that was on the V551. No cracks, audio loss, or distortion.

Posted by: djnick

w600 speaker is loud, but i have yet to hear any speakerphone that can compare to the nextel ones moto makes

Posted by: auxiliary

I don't have the w600i yet, but I was in the store last week checking it our. It has 3 speakers. I played a MP3 through the speakers, it was loud, and clear. Now can you get the same performance from a call? Not sure. Might want to look into this more.
