Must have software for the 650:

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Mr. Rogers

I remember reading a thread sometime ago listing off the must have apps for a stable treo 650, I'm going to start from scratch with hopes of gaining a completely stable treo. What do you people consider mandatory apps. Backup, File Management, Uninstall (so you can try a few programs at a time),

I use:
Pocket Tunes
TCPMP
Verichat
Treo Alarm? but is there better?

Anyway, you get the picture. just software that gives you maximum function coupled with quality and stability. Or link me to the old thread, i tried searching, no luck.

Posted by: ilvla2

BackupBuddy
Butler
Genius
Uninstall
PowerRun
SplashPhoto
Technician
VolumeCare
CityID
FlieZ
MMPlayer
Voice Dial
ZLauncher

Those are what I use in addtion to two you listed, PocketTunes and Verichat. All are excellent programs, and one (FileZ) is even free. All have been stable and error free for me

Hobbyist Software puts out the Genius, Phone Technician and Butler Aps, among others, and continually produces some of the most useful and highly rated aps for the Treo. No, I don't work for them , but I'm extremely impressed with their products, and their head guy, Rob

I hope this helps!

How is Zlauncher? Is it a memory hog?
I used to use Launcher X and was pretty happy with the interface.

Posted by: WiggyFife

VolumeCare seconded!!! And no, I'm not a paid endorser for the company, or an employee of the company. I just use it and sing it's praises when need be!!!

Posted by: Croix9602

VolumeCare
VoiceCall (More stable for me than VoiceDial, and can launch apps, too)
BackupBuddy
BT Mute
FileZ (Freeware!)
LightWav
TCPMP

Posted by: geekaren

And here's yet another vote for VolumeCare!

More must have stuff for the 650:
* QuickNews (to download podcasts)
* Audible Air (to download audiobooks)
* TCPMP (plays audio & video... it's freeware)
* pTunes Deluxe (to stream audio)
* Stockbroker Pro (to monitor stocks)
* Chatter (if you want "push" email)
* Xiino (faster than the OEM browser)
* VoiceDial (provides voice dialing without needing to be "trained")
* ZLauncher (can also be used to move apps to your SD card

Not software, but also a must have item... a 1GB SD Card.

Enjoy your Treo!

Posted by: shawncv79

geekaren - just a 1 GB card? why not a 2GB card...

mr rogers - why would you use PowerRUN and ZLauncher? You can simply "install" programs to SD\Palm\Programs and then click-hold and create a shortcut. THis saves space on the device and not requiring another program to do so. Plus it won't built a large unsaved prefs file.

Posted by: dapastaguy

VolumeCare
Ringo Pro - with mp3 ringers on the sd card
FileZ
LEDOff
Invisble - for hiding the blasted welcome + quick tour

Posted by: whatever7

I used to fill up my Treo with TONS of software. I had to do a hard reset recently. Funny I only load up 3 software:

1) profile
2) pTunes
3) TomTom

That's it.

Posted by: KENZELLC

I have learned about a lot of new software. Thanks everyone. Now do anyone know what I can use to block private calls or is there anything out there that makes there number show.

Posted by: Croix9602

CallFilter will take unknown or blocked calls and do a pickup/hangup, or a direct send to voicemail. I had some reboot issues with the program, but I think it was more my phone than the program, as many people have not had any issues with it.

Very good info here thank you all

Ok, I just installed LauncherX (had LauncherIII on my old Palm III!) and while it's generally great, I cannot seem to use the pad to select an app and launch it...I just scroll around the various LauncherX tabs.

Any ideas? Does ZLauncher do this right?

Thanks.

Posted by: Rayan

If you ever get tired of the Palm OS simple (and boring) interface, you can try PalmRevolt.

I like the way it skins the whole interface, buttons and all!

Imagine having Windows XP or the MacOS X Aqua buttons in your Treo 650!

Cheers!

I'd like to know about this too as I'd like to keep my stylus use to a minimum.

In Zlauncher you can do everything using d-pad.

This is a great way to get yourself banned for ever from this site.

Since this is your first post I'll consider it a mistake on your part and only give you a friendly warning.

You like software? Here's a tip. Buy it.

Callfilter is great along with Chatter!

Posted by: tenorsaw

Here are some I use myself:

Butler -
SplashID
Chatter
Treoguard
TCPMP
Directory Assistance (Beautiful!)
Verichat
VolumeCare

Posted by: grafik2

anyone have any problems with volumecare or BTMute?

read some of the reviews and i heard a variety of things

Posted by: Jivs

What email programs would you guys recommend? I use versamail but it is very basic though. I want to be able to click a button to "get mail" instead of autosyncing it all of the time.

Posted by: lgreenberg

If you use POP3 try Snapper. www.snappermail.com

If you use IMAP try Chatter. www.chatteremail.com

I prefer Snapper for IMAP - it is available in the Enterprise edition.

Posted by: Mr. Rogers

Does snappermail work well with gmail? I've had a lot of problems with gmail + versamail. I got it to work, however it would be intermitant, and often the auto getmail would not work.

I saw once a service similar to rogers mymail you could buy online to get push email on your treo without a corporate exchange server. Does anyone use a service like that?

Posted by: grafik2

another thing that might be helpful in this thread is a listing or maybe a suggested list of programs/files that can be exported to a SD card to preserve RAM....there are a ton of files that are on the fone's list and i wouldnt dare try and guess which ones can be exported and which are not

I tried that and had problems with it sending ALL my calls to voicemail. When one did get through, no ringtone would play at all. It rebooted my phone directly after I installed it, which was red flag #1. Too many problems & I deleted it.

Posted by: dirtvoyles

One I just loaded, even though it's cross-platform: Google Maps.

Did you get this to run properly? I've not been able to make the generic MDIP 2.0 version run...it starts up then immediately hangs the Treo...

Posted by: steve12m3

That's a lot of applications. Do you copy everything to an SD card and then delete it from the phone?

My favorite's are Verichat, Always on, LEDoff, FileZ, Obfuscate, Ringo, BTMute, VolumeCare, and TreoAlarm.

Posted by: Slider76

I wonder if the reason I do not see anyone listing Documents To Go is because it is part of the OEM -supplied software?

The reason I bring this up is because my usage is primarily for business and I was thinking of upgrading my Documents To Go V7.0 to Documents To Go Total Office V8.0.

Has anyone done this already and if so, have you experienced any problems/issues?

Posted by: jdhore1

it is OEM supplied on Some Palm models...Ones i know for a fact:
Treo 650
Tungsten E2
Tungsten T5
TX
Lifedrive

Posted by: Kabuk1

Steve- Yeah, I run most of those from the card.

Posted by: maceyr

Ones that I use on mine:

Always On
Card Export II
Datebk5 (but it resets my Treo from time to time)
Graffiti Anywhere (allows me to input G2 on the screen)
LED Off (stop the flashing LED)
PowerRun (run apps from SD card)
Pref Doctor (saves my preferences so I don't lose all preferences when it resets)
RescoBackup (Backupman wasn't working as well so I now use RBackup)
Resco Explorer
RescoLocker (essential to lock apps from resetting my Treo)
Ringo
Stay On In Cradle (stop the dimming when in cradle)
Uninstall Manager (remove apps from the Palm)

I'm interested in this too as I don't want to install another program if I don't have to...does this process work?

Posted by: shawncv79

yes. I was referring to this as an easier way to install a program as well as a way to save space on your Palm. PM if you need further help.

Posted by: YMePlsHelp

My favorite program I've had since the days of Palm OS 2. It's called "GayDar" cute little program you "beam" at someone and press scan. It's fun for parties, serves no actual use. But it's funny to say you have. I also have a cute kitten program with a cat that runs around. They are both freeware, and entertain the crap out of me when I have 10 minutes on the train to do nothing

Posted by: SN707

I dont know if it is just me, but I love Handmarks IN Hand... I use the 411 feture 110 times a day...

Also you can google "GayDar for Palm" it's a very old version but still works on Treo's. It's cute and a lot of my friends enjoy it's uselessnes

Posted by: mikecp421

interesting stuff thanks for the lists

Posted by: fishera

Interesting programs everyone runs. I just loaded like 4 apps onto my Treo that are really helpful! Thanks everyone!

Posted by: tech no logy

My programs most of which are free.
ksdatebook a free app that really enhances the datebook program (i'm surprized that it is free) it enhances the views when you use the datebook button you can even get a full month calendar with words (gofish).
Checkbook another freeware that works wonderfully for balancing multiple accts I have used it in my tx and now use it in my treo 650.
NVbackup its free and works off of the sd card it backs up everything very well and can be programed to run at certain times, I do a hard reset once a month too and I have used it to restore everything without flaw did I say free?
Filez I have it but have never used it, free too.
Minitones can put mp3 that on your card into the ringer file on your treo (it converts) works great now I hear my fav song when my phone rings, just keep the files small, Free yup free.
StopDim 5 smackers stops your phone from dimming while on a call.
Treo area codes or cityid you get to see what city and state your caller is calling from, costs (Handango) The free ware is from freewarepalm. com

Posted by: maceyr

How did you get StopDim for free? I paid for mine. Maybe you're referring to something else. My StopDim is from gotreosoftware.com . Maybe they once offered it for free.

It says that its 5 smackers (slang for dough)? I know i should have said 5 bucks, darn terrorists

Posted by: maceyr

I'm not terribly into the slang so obviously, I'm "out of it".

Posted by: tech no logy

Its cool. Its always nice to swap slang with another phone collector

Posted by: tgranber

Now I am going to ask a very smart question here. How does one get these applications at a "Discount" PM me with info please

Posted by: travelmad478

I'd ask this in the Hobbyist forum, but I've asked twice to have a registration e-mail sent and it is not coming...

I just downloaded Butler yesterday, for one specific function: Attention Grabber. The lack of a repeating "nag me" function on the Treo is the one thing I really hate about it--I need to have a beep every few minutes in case I miss a voicemail.

So I downloaded the Butler program for a free trial. I tested out the Attention Grabber with a variety of settings, and absolutely nothing is happening. I don't have any other programs (like Chatter) running to conflict with it, I am not hitting "OK" on the Treo when a new voicemail alert comes up, but still, the Attention Grabber isn't doing anything at all.

Can anyone make a suggestion on this program, or suggest another one that ONLY has the Attention Grabber function? I don't need anything else that Butler does!
