P800 -- I corrupted the OS !!!

Hey guys,

I am pissed! I will list what I did that caused it to happen. I can't pinpoint an actual action, so I will mention all the steps before it happened. The result was, although the phone functions work, the PDA functions are pretty much not there any more! Even on the 5 closed flip buttons, only the center phone icon is there -- if you try to open the other buttons, it explodes, but then it doesn't do anything. The camera and Internet side buttons do nothing now. And when I open the flip, all I get the dial pad screen, which does work, but there is no tabs or access to anything else. Crap !!!

What I did was: I installed this MAME program. Then I installed the StuntCar game. I then uninstalled the "demo" program to make more space. I then decided I would rather put the MAME and StuntCar programs on the duo, so I UNINSTALLED the MAME program, and reinstalled it on the duo. Then I did the same with the Stunt Car, and then I installed MIB directly to the duo. I turned off the unit, turned it back on, and voila, the OS was corrupted. I am not sure exactly why, but I would be very cautious of that MAME program. I tohught that maybe by uninstalling the "demo" program somehow ruined the OS, but I spoke with Alex (whtrbt7), and he also uninstalled the demo app, and all is still well with him. Unfortunately, there is no hard reset button on this phone

I was lucky that the data was still in the phone, and I finally did a backup. I now have to get the phone reflashed again with the R1B firmware, and hopefully, do a restore, and all will be back to where it was, which, by the way, took about 10 hours of entering and tweaking.

So, the lesson is, back up often, and be aware you CAN corrupt the OS with installs and uninstalls.

There's no hard reset?!? Did you tried a soft reset then?

That's weird since it's a PDA afterall rite? Isn't the OS in the ROM, so I doubt the OS can really be corrupted in your scenario...

When all the options are gone, the only thing you can do is press the off button, then press the on button. There really should be a hard reset button on the machine.

And, I think the PDA side and the phone side are in separate areas, since my PDA side went down, but the phone side is still functional.

Have you tried to format internal disk trough the service menu ?

Jeff, I am so glad someone could help you. Brimmee that was very sharp of you to pick up on and I for one am glad to now know how to access the service menu in the event something should happen to mine. As a matter of fact, my first one had a problem and the touch screen went out after being exposed to satalitte transmission uplinks. I was cussing the lack of a manual reset myself and if I had had access to the above information, it would have saved me a few days of frustration. As Jeff pointed out, the phone functions are seperate from the PDA, so it continued to work as a phone. On day 5 after putting Amy's SIM into the phone, it magically reset itself with no further problems.

It is to bad that you can't do the same with the service menu like the T68i

you can't do any tests like binking the display or showing how many times the jog dial has been around. but anyway I'm glad that I could be of some assinstence and help you guys.

I tried this several times but it doesn't work for me...I am on standby screen and do that...Am I doing anything wrong?..How do I get to the service menu?...

up,*,down, down,*,down,* should be done in flip closed mode.

I'm doing that with the flip closed but, I get the small menu on the right side and then I get the blue screen where the numbers go when I press the *...Any suggestions?

You don´t have to push the jog you haveto rotate it up and down.

I know -- wouldn't you say this thread went a little off topic ?????

MAME is a program that allows you to utilize the original ROMS of old arcade games such as Missle command, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong etc ... see http://my-symbian.com/uiq/applicati...ldAuto=24&faq=7

The program is legal -- the ROMS aren't -- you gotta find them on the net.

But, personally, it's another nice utilization of technology, but the games, as great as they were in the arcade, are a little boring on somehting like the P800. And, it MAY mess up your system, if you play with it (install it, uninstall it, etc...)

You need only the roms. I have the pacman.zip if you like it...
It works fine on my P800 (until it died !!)

Just place the xxxx.zip file under /Documents/ROMS and run MAME Software...

Just an observation... I don't own a P800 (nor do I claim to

), but in any situation like this you can't seriously expect the rest of the users of this forum to believe your (apparently) unlikely claim of having this new software.

There are a lot of very well-informed and knowledgeable people on this forum, many of which have great resources when it comes to this subject (LVWireless comes to mind). The chance of you, a sub 100-post user, having some inside information that allows you to be the *only* one getting this new software is so unlikely that the only realistic way to convince (read: win over) this audience will be with undeniable proof. The words you post can all be taken with a grain of salt. That just goes along with the inherent childish behavior of most internet users. I'm not telling you you're wrong, and I'm always willing to admit when I'm wrong, but when you look at what you're saying logically, you just need to give the people what they want if you're looking for some support here.

My cause ?
I have a fine working P800 with the lastet software.

Check on the forum for the last week and you will notise how meny users i have "help" getting arround with their P800.....

Ask Mr Bengalboy of his reaction when he thought that i am the same user as john74, as he never had any actual proofs...

He thought... Ah.. Greek guy and another Greek guy. The first one was full of crap, so ALL of them are the same.... and then it went on and on and on....

Thats not a nice welcome, dont you think ?

I dont disagree with you that there are many well-informed and knowledgeable people on this forum, but who said that all of the other users know nothing....??
I dont have a reason to lie my friend, but with the treatment that i am takking the last week, i am realy thinking about it !!

My proof geovASS is that you are in fact as full of crap as he was, no photo as promised by you proving it was installed on your P800, just excuses and not enough class to just admit you lied. And if I were to use your logic for proving the software did exist, I could say that since *** is in your tag and John74 obviously has a fetish for it, you must be the same guy? (Freudian Slip) Not to mention your spelling and his are very similar, if not identical..Anyway I did love exposing you as a person with no credibility, thanks for giving me the opportunity...
