SP5 issues: screen freezing/lock; memory issues...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I got my SP5 this week and have two issues, one quite major, and one smaller but very annoying:

(1) screen and keys lock up/freezes when key lock is on, and wifi is turned on, then when the SP5 senses a new wifi connection, the query screen "new wifi detected, do you want to view the ..." pops up. The problem is when you've locked your keys, say for putting the phone in your pocket, and you walk/drive by an area with new wifi connections (VERY frequent occurance in nyc), the phone has a pop up screen and you're FORCED to answer Yes or No before moving on!! well, you can't answer yes or no since the key lock is on! NO BUTTON will work, incl the on/off, the connections botton on the left, NONE. The only way that i know of to get out of this "frozen" situation is to remove the battery and turn the phone on again.

this means that whenever you plan to lock your keys, you better turn off your wifi, unless you're planning on locking your keys and being stationary; but if you were planning on being stationary, why would you lock your keys? one typically locks one's keys when one is moving around, when the phone is in your pocket! anyone knows of a workaround? it would be appreciated!

(2) the IMate SP5 came with three programs in the Add/Remove Programs listing: the antivirus (AV), Backgammon, and another game called Lines. in no time, like one day, with minimal web surfing and frequent deleting of IE memories, i have like only less than 1MB of "usable memory" left, but quite a bit of Program Memory. I'm only talking about the phone's internal ram here, not my 1gb mini SD.

much searching and asking around ensued. no results/answers. the only solution was a "soft reset": start/accessories/clear storage. while i thought that that would reset to "out of the box factory condition", the result was that in Add/Remove programs, there are now NO programs at all! Interestingly, I now have: Storage Memory 17.95MB, Used 12.29MB, Free 5.65MB. MUCH better. i realize that i don't have the AV anymore, but during my second day of having this phone, the Alert: low memory pop up was constantly popping up, like every minute!! which was clearly untolerable.

So while this is not a great workaround, since i no longer have AV (don't much care about the backgammon and Lines games), it is a workaround of sorts until they start sending out viruses targeted at smartphones.

any advice from you all would be most appreciated. i'm at the end of my wits even though i've only had the SP5 for 3 days. i was told that the Qtek 8300/8310 do not have this memory problem.

honestly, the key lock/new wifi detected...frozen phone problem is extremely annoying. anyone knows what to do?

many thanks in advance!

ok to start off in wifi settings go to "power mode" then just adjust the auto off to a small number (so when your are not using the wifi connection it switches off but when your reopen your browser or unlock your phone it reconnects automatically.)

second do you do alot of surfing on the phone with internet explorer??? (important question)

Mr. Digisnacks:

thx for helping!

when you say small number, do you mean something like 5 minutes instead of the default 10 mins?

what happened today was: the wifi was turned on, as is typical, then i put my phone in my pocket and got in a car here in nyc. as we were moving along, i took my phone out to make a call (i'm not the driver). on the phone's screen was the "Wifi connections found, do you want to see the new wifi connections". BUT, at that point, my phone's keypad was locked since i just took it out of my pocket! so, you can't answer yes or no to that pop up "new wifi connections found", and since you can't answer that pop up question, you can't go to any other screen either. Effectively, you have zero choice but to remove the battery.

i can't be the ONLY person who's experienced this, right?

i don't do that much surfing, but when i'm home, since i have wifi, why wouldn't i want to have wifi on? i'm not sure what your last questions is really asking.

thx in advance and looking forward to hearing from you.

as for memory just open internet explorer > options > Memory how many bytes in "Temporary Files"?

as for the other problem goto wifi settings > Wi-fi > Menu > Wi-fi Settings. Then turn "Available network notification to "off"

digisnacks:

i'm lost by your last post. sorry. may i ask you to explain what you're trying to accomplish?

"as for the other problem...go to wifi ....turn Available network notification to off..."

that means that those new Wifi connection found "pop up screens" won't appear anymore? is that correct?

how would we choose, say when we sit in a cafe, or when i'm in the Apple Store, to find a newly available connection and use that then?

thx!

wow, mr digisnacks:

you really really know those BURIED wifi settings and menu > wifi settings...VERY well!

it really was NOT obvious how to find that without your careful second comment above, giving the pathway to find THAT specific, wifi settings, since there are several "wifi settings" possibilities in the various nested menus!!

thx!

i think you hit the nail right on the head on this one vis-a-vis my problem, right?

thx!

thats right the pop up wont appear

the only way around it (at the moment) is to switch it back on when you would like to search for new wifi spots....

Sorry you were saying you were having a low memory problem as well,it might be to do with internet explorer did you check to see how much memory was being used?

is there a way to see all the available wifi connections , you know, that list thing, and just on demand, when we need to see and choose, and not have to go that deeply into those wifi settings EACH time we need to find a new spot? seems so inconvenient.

do you mean the connections you have acess to and use if yes

wifi settings > wifi > they should be listed here....

if you mean to search for new connections it might be easier to turn off your wifi when you are not using it.....

Hi, move your History, Temp Internet & Cookies to your storage card. Then IE use makes no difference. The memory free on mine hovers around 10MB free on Storage and 10MB free on Program. I've never seen the low mem warning on mine. I assume you have installed any 3rd party apps to the SD.
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders] "History"="\\Storage Card\\Pocket IE\\History" "Cookies"="\\Storage Card\\Pocket IE\\Cookies" "Cache"="\\Storage Card\\Pocket IE\\Temporary Internet Files"

Oh and although I haven't experienced your specific lock problem, I have had a few 'funnies' when the phone has been locked and something pops up like a call or a reminder, sometimes it gets a little confused (or maybe its me )

Thx for posting an answer and reply to my question about memory issues that i'm having with my sp5.

may i ask how to use your "code" that you posted? is that what i need to do once i get a registry editor? i'm very nervous about doing registry changes, plus i have absolutely no idea what to do, how to do it, etc.

i was told it's a bit dangerous to do...

i have ZERO new software that i added to the phone so far! i just got the phone 3 days ago and still learning and experimenting.

i realize that MANY things are NOT allowed to be moved from the phone's internal memory to the mini SD card!! for example, why would ring tones NOT be allowed to be saved on my mini SD??!? the only way i can see in getting around that is to save a bunch of ringtones on the mini SD, then whichever one i want to use, i have to COPY that wav file, and PASTE it at the phone's ram via File Manager. that way, we don't "waste" the phone's ram since there's only 1 ringtone taking up the phone's ram memory space. am i thinking along the right track?

thx in advance!

Hi, yes the code I posted is a registry tweak which redirects all the IE junk to your SD card. If you know what you are doing hacking the registry is not risky at all. I have altered many parts of mine to make it run the way I want it. Worst comes to the worst you just blow it away and reset it (like you already have before) and you are back with a working phone.
I installed everything to the SD card. I only have one non-standard ringtone and I put that on the phone itself. However I have read on here that there is a reg hack to change that so that tones are on the SD card too. I don't need that so have never researched it. Try asking/searching on here? My sp5 is performing excellently. Based on what you have said my guess is that one or more of these things is true;
1. Browsing is using lots of space by leaving clutter behind.
2. You have loads of emails. (these can be moved to the SD card, see my other posting in this forum)
3. You have 1000's of contacts or calander appointments.
4. You have synchronised loads of files from your PC.

By the way what ROM version are you running?

Good luck.

I believe it is one "\" before (and within) the path name when using something like PHM to edit the registry.

Indeed it is, use double slashes only when importing a registry file.

use "short cuts" they are you friend when coming to memry saving......for ringtones and message /alarm tones....

and can all be done with file explorer.

so instead of moving yor 4MB wav or mp3 ring tone to "application data > sounds" you put the tones onto you SD card and create "short cuts" of those files into the same directory

then with magic you have saved 4Mb of precious phone memory with a 20Kb short cut.
