Sound Quality

I saw in a couple of reviews that the sound quality (music) in the Sharp 903 is poor. What do u think? Is it really so poor? It sounds very strange to me because the phone have 2 Speakers 128 Polyphonic Yamaha sound card and 3D Effect so is it really so poor? How would u rate it in a scale of 1 to 10?

poor compared to what though? compared to my d500(its louder) it is poor, but it also has surround sound on the 903. the 903 just isn't loud with the external speakers but i think it sounds great with the headphones.

with headphones it sounds just like an ipod would. speakers are way above all phones compare to crispness. the surround sound really makes a difference, if you have the jap version the fishing game has great 3d surround sound. The speakers are capable of louder mp3 playback but needs adjusting. Remember this is a jap phone and in japan, it is considered rude if you play loud music eg ringtones. Thats why it isnt as loud.

The speakers are pretty soft but they have crisp sound and with headphones, the music sounds great~ What I don't like about this phone though is that it doesn't play any mp3s over 192kbps quality (lots of my mp3s are 320kbps.)

is it possible to change the kbps? from higher to 192kbps?

yes, there are lots of programs that allows you to change the bitrate. Takes about 10s per song.

the 3d surround sound in 903 isn't that great on the phone itself, you can barely hear the sound, but with headphones on, i'm sure it beats all ipods, especially with the mega bass on.

Posted by: totaltoanage

like i said, its not loud cause the company made it soft, it is capable but needs programs like goldwave to make them louder. you can also change the bitrate to 192 with some programs like switch.

Ehh, I wouldn't say it beats iPods. The 903 is a phone with mp3 capabilities, but the iPod is made for music and I would assume with that, the iPod sounds better. However, the sound quality for music on the 903 is good and when I listen to music on it, it sounds great.

mmm I dont care if the speakers are not loud but are they good? I mean is it good as the moto E398 speakers?

Posted by: DjTraNcEFoRmeD

They are pretty good, they are still audible even with the headphones out. However, the volume must be cranked all the way up if you are in a room that is a little bit noisy. Also, the surround sound sucks if you are just going to listening to music on your headphones or just broadcast some music to a same group of friends.

i owned a 902 and 903, and i made my own extra loud ring tone, as mane ppl said the company made the speckers soft, and with the head phone on the sound is perfect,if u uses the headset from 902, where u can plug in ur own 3.5mm stero headsets, i uses sony's, it is just good i will give it a 8/10, the only 2 marks off is because by default the ringtone are soft, and the voluem on the speckers are like up to a point, and for those I-Pod addicts, i tryed with a i-pod, I pot to me just have the volume, and if u think i-pod beats 903 in volume, i will say no to you, i pod only beats in volum and sizes, if you still wanna have a go at me for saying the quality on the 903 is bad, welll how about u find me another MP3 phone that have soo much functions to match with a 903, if u want REAL QUALITY how about you go get urself a hifi system, i-pod to me is just a normal mp3 player wiht a HDD stick to it, the over all quality form the 903 is the best in its class, you can tell me Sony errison's Walkman Line hav better function cause you can still play music without turnin the phone completly on, i buy that point, but what more does it have other then the walkman function and loud ringtone, i can bump up my volume on my 903,and the sound isn;t bad at all , 903 is a pretty good mp3 phone with a high-def. screen, camara, and speckers
cause i enjoy my mp3's through my 903(i also made amperfied volume ringtones)

I had the 902 and now have to 903, but the volume on both is pretty low compared with the sony ericsson phones. I think u could fit 4 speakers on the 903,2 where they are now and 2 where the 902 has them.

was there a noticible difference between the speakers on the 902 and 903, volume and quality wise?

My opinion about 902 sound quality:
1. Speakers
With proper sound file (laud enough) rigntones sounds OK to me.
MMF ringtones are much louder than mp3.
Stereo speakers with surround sound are great for occasional playing music when you don`t have headphones/don`t want to use them. Sound quality is outstanding when compared to other phones (except 903).

2. Sound quality on headphones when listening mp3`s
...is very good, I mean, it beats all cheap mp3 players easly, even ipod. I`ve made a test, I took my friends old 30GB iPod, new iPod nano and my 902. I used for comparision ipod headphones and ofcourse same mp3 file and I must say that:
- when EQ was off on all devices, sound quality was the same
- nano with EQ set to rock sounds better than old 30gb ipod set to rock (in fact, in this ipod EQ is very bad)
- 902 set to Surround Bass beats BOTH iPods, whatever you will set on ipod EQ!!!
- ipod is much more comfortable mp3 player than 902

Another test, this time on KOSS Spark Plugs. 30GB iPod vs Sharp 902.
Some of you might have tried KOSS Spark Plugs, cheap & good headphones, best quality for this price on the market, incredible bass but they have a dark side...
Results:
- on normal setting sound is a bit dull on both devices due to Spark Plugs characteristics, a bit dark headphones Bass is much better than on ipod headphones.
- 902 set to surround bass - hard to listen, too much bass :P
- 902 set to surround - sounds perfect for me, KOSS headphones are forced to play sound in a bit different way and result is very good
- can`t get similiar sound quality on ipod due to lack of similiar wow surround (SRS) alike option on ipod
- 902 + KOSS headphones is better set than ipod + KOSS Spark Plugs
- ipod user interface is amaizing
- if you wanna perfect mp3 player buy iRiver

UncleAllEvil, your post is very helpful. Could you comment on background noise on the 902 when
1. nothing is playing
2. changing track
with Koss Plug in a quiet place?

DoComo's done that on their FOMA Sharp models. I think the 903 with 4 speakers would be amazing. It'd eat up and project sound like there's no tomorrow.

ad. 1. Can`t hear anything, no noise when nothing is played, but when music is played an you will lower sound volume to zero you can hear some background noise.

ad 2. While changing track I can`t hear any aditional sounds, just silence for a sec. No glitches or something like that.

Good side of Spark Plugs is that thanks to earbuds they are isolating ears from outside sound.
