Using AT&T Branded Phones on Cingular

I am on Cingular through my work. They provide the phone & pay for the service. Anyways, I am looking to buy a used V551 & the guy that is selling it says he bought it through AT&T around May & just had it turned off 2 days ago. Will I be able to use this phone on Cingular by just inserting my sim chip from my current phone? I wouldn't be able to call up Cingular with the phone since my name is not on the bill, my boss is. I tried to call in once & they wouldn't let me access the account without a password that was set up by my boss.

No, it won't work as is. It will need to be unlocked in order to use on Cingular.

thanks. I guess it still holds true that Cingular won't unlock the phone? I suppose it's wise to just pass on this one & look for a Cingular one.

Cingular will unlock phones, you have to have the right criteria, however, since theres a password on the acct, theres not really a way to verify that you meet it to have it unlocked unless you can convince the boss man to give it to you.

The marketplace has a lot of places you can try, you just need the imei and are willing to shell out a few bucks to do it.

BTW...wheres satchel and rob? XD

Cingular will not unlock pre-merger AT&T phones. However, since the V551 is a post-merger Blue device, customer service can file a SIM unlock request with the SIM unlock group to get the code for you.

Help..I don't know where to look! I have AT&T and I want to stick with my plan instead of switching to Cingular. If I purchase the phone unlocked from a site, what are the chances that all of my AT&T capabilities like M-mode will work on the phone?

Bucky, not sure how much you are paying for the 551, but you might want to look into getting an unlocked NEC 535m off of ebay. They are only about $90 after shipping new, nice big screen, and 1.3MP camera.

After it's unlocked you shouldn't have a problem.

I'm using a Cingular branded 6230b and it's working just fine.

Thank you Microchip, I appreciate your help
