Can you do simultaneous Voice and Data on a CDMA network using the Motorola Q?

Hi folks,

I am looking at getting the Motorola Q when it is released on Verizon in Q1 2006. I have been a T-Mobile GSM user for a few years, but the Q to me is worth a switch to Verizon.

I have heard on various forums that CDMA networks do not allow simultaneous voice and data transfer (i.e., talking to someone on the speakerphone while looking something up on the web). Is this true? I have also heard that when using EVDO, simultaneous transfer is inherently possible, but I don't want to pay the huge prices Verizon will inevitably charge for EVDO. Is simultaneous transfer possible on the base 1xRTT network?

Thanks!

I would ask this in the Verizon forum. I don't think CDMA can do data and voice at the same time. I don't think even with EVDO its possiable. I think its only possiable with EV-DV or whatever its called.

With EVDO, calls can still come in while you're actively using the data connection (i.e. loading a web page). This is an improvement over GPRS and 1xRTT where the call would go to VM if the phone was in the act of downloading data. However, if you're in a voice call, data transfer is paused and then resumed when the call ends. The data connection isn't terminated, but it is "on hold" so nothing will transfer while you're talking on the phone.

I seem to get calls when I am using my GPRS connection . The call will inturrupt my data connection since voice has priority on GSM. I may be wrong here but I thought EVDO was on a seperate frequency and that is the advantage to haveing EVDO was the advantage of having data and voice at the same time.

Yeah, I am still thinking that what your talking about is EVDV however I am not sure. I am sure people in the Verizon or Sprint forum would know more since they are both CDMA carriers.

I use Verizon, and really, the data transfer will pause when you're a voice call. It will resume when the call is over- pretty seamless and you might not even realized it had paused.

ev-dv development was delayed since ev-do surpassed expectations.

will the Q ship with EV-DO? that's my question.

When I had a CDMA phone it couldnt do voice and data at the same time. The 1X data was pretty fast though.

The GSM Q should be out soon. Its supposed to not include wifi/edge as the average user will buy it based on its looks/design alone.

The CDMA Moto Q will have EVDO.
