RAZR V3 Keypad SMELLS!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, i've had the phone for a little over a year. As of the last couple of months, i've noticed an odiferous odor coming from the keypad. It kind of smells like BO and metal, all in one.... I have cleaned it thoroughly with soap and water on a rag, and the smell is still there. Does anyone know of any solutions other than a new keypad? Unfortunately, i'm out of the warranty period, so I can't get a new phone through Cingular.

Please, no hygiene comments - I am a clean, civilized person, so my hygiene is not the problem. As I read on another thread, this seems to be quite common on older RAZRs.

I was just about to make a hygiene comment.... but i told myself i was going to be nice...lol...

To the question.. I haven't experienced this problem... maybe spray a little fragrance on it..

A whole thread on this:

A.) This has been covered many, MANY times, (try searching first next time)

and

B.) Don't put the phone in your underwear.

edit: BTW, "odiferous odor" is redundant One can't have an "odiferous unscented smell", now could they?

From reading that thread, that is the only resolution that has worked.

Someone mentioned that using isobopryl alcohol might work?

What cleaning agents have people used out there that work (and that didn't damage the metal keypad)?

There is another (juvinile) thread on this topic. My wife has a silver V3 and I have a black one. Hers has no problem, mine smelled awful. I tried rubbing the entire phone down w/ Isopropyl Alchohol, but it did nothing. I ended up using some Method stainless steel cleaner that seems to have done the trick (and not just masked the odor). I sprayed it on a paper towel, and carefully just worked on the metal parts of the phone (avoided the screen).

Good luck.

maybe its you? loll j/k

I never expected this question.

Best bet would be using something to cover it up like perfume, cologne, axe, etc.

BO is supposed to go away!! Once the B leaves, the O goes with it! <seinfeld>

*sniff*sniff*

mine smells like magnesium

my uncle has the ORIGINAL silver v3. the one thats completely metal. his keypad has the same problem. its notjing to do with your hygiene. its a chemical that comes out of the metal. (afterall, it is a chemically etched keypad).

I have the some problem with my V3 that ive had for about a year and 4 months but the odor seems to be coming from the earpiece not the keypad. I dont know of any solutions to this problem.

I have never heard of a phone producing an odor unless the chip is frying and you smell silicon burning (smells like singing hairs.)

My keypad smells as well, it just started all of a sudden one day. I tried cleaning it and it doesn't make a difference , so I just purchased a new keypad to get rid of the smell.

Getting a new keypad seems to be the easiest solution. Since I am not experenceing any odor from my phone, how strong is this smell? I've sniffed my phone, but it smells like a regular phone with a more metallic smell to it(which is because it is titanitum and magnesium)

The smell is very strong, you can smell it when you are on the phone. I have had my Razr for 2 years now and it only started a few weeks ago, but I know people who's Razr started to smell after only 6 months.

It sounds like the keypad is trapping the oils from peoples skins into the metal causing it to smell. There may have been a defective batch, which I why some people notice this and others dont. Just pick a new keypad up from ebay.
