Using an HTC Jasjar on Cingular

I would like to use a Jasjar on Cingular (US), especially since Cingular seems to be taking their time releasing the 8125. What call making ability do I loose since the Jasjar does not have 850MHz band?

I keep seeing references to a quad band Jasjar, is there such a thing, or is the WCDMA (UMTS) (2100MHz) band the fourth band?

I can say that using the Jasjar here in Denver, Colorado works great even with only 1900mhz support on Cingular. You won't have access to 850mhz, obviously so depending on where you live you would not have coverage in 850mhz only areas. Testing is really the only way to know how its going to work out for you.

The UMTS support at 2100mhz only works in Europe. So, unless you are traveling there this function will not work in the USA because 2100mhz is not used for any carrier (its owned by the DoD).

The lack of 850mhz and EDGE data is a bummer for a really great device otherwise. However, my call experience in my area has been good. The 8125 will have an advantage in the 850mhz support and EDGE data but obviously lose out on the VGA display and coolness factor that the Jasjar/Universal offers.

exchguy-

What do you mean that the the Jasjar does not support EDGE? GPRS is a function that is listed as supported on the 9000/Jasjar websites. I have heard the only problem is if you have 850 only in your market or not. Am I missing something??

exchguy-

I am correcting myself- I thought that EDGE and GPRS were basically the same thing... I was wrong...

Yep, no EDGE support on the Jasjar. As I said, it is too bad that this device was made primarily for a European audience and lacks support for 850mhz and EDGE. They instead went with UMTS on 2100 which is worthless in the USA.

Does anyone know where Cingular uses 1900 and where they use 850? How about in the New York metro area?

1900 only in NYC and CA

This is old information. Cingular is now taking advantage of the AT&T 850 spectrum in SF, LA and NYC that was used solely by TDMA in the past.

Which is not to say they don't use 1900 too, but not 1900 only.

You can usually get a pretty good idea by looking at Wireless Advisor:
