if i unlock a sidekick 2 and put a cingular simcard in will i be able to use aim or just make calls? do you know if it uses text messages to send im's or if you HAVE to have that t-mobile internet plan

You have to have a Sidekick plan. Cingular does not offer sidekick service.
You CAN put a cingular SIM in it and make/receive phone calls - but no AIM, no internet, no data.

thanks for the info, i wanted it for calls and aim but if i can't use aim there's not much point

You can text though right?

Yes. Voice and text would be all you would get. For that amount of functionality, a Nokia 6820 would be a better choice.

6822b is better

How long will it take for sidekicks to be out for other services like cingular or say maybe sprint or whatnot??

doesnt tmo have the rights to the sidekick?

and what if you added the data plan if you used the sidekick on cingular?

I think T-Mobile might own the name "sidekick" - the device name fom Dange is called the "Hiptop" as far as I know.

Now - let me say this one more time - YOU CANNOT USE the hiptop for data (yes, even if it is unlocked) on Cingular because Cingular does not have the necessary backend to support Hiptop Data. It does use GPRS but it does not use standard GPRS APNs - you use a Danger APN which goes through a Danger server. T-Mo has this - cingular does not.

You can ONLY use the phone on cingular as a phone (no SMS, no data)

This is sort of like blackberries. If you have a blackberry, but no blackberry plan to go with it, you can only use it as a phone (yes you can use the PIM, but no mail). I think blackberry is less restrictive than Danger. I think with a blackberry you can SMS without a blackberry plan.

Danger might make an EVDO model - but this is pure speculation on my part

I thought you could use SMS since that uses GSM protocals, and not GPRS. If you really want it, buy a SK2 at full retail, then call T-Mobile, and request the unlocking code and fax them the reciept. They'll send you the unlocking code within a week.

The Sidekick can do GPRS.
I believe that SMS are sent through the danger gateway and then sent out (as opposed to being sent to the SMSC that T-Mo has for the rest of their subscribers).

IF SMS works, you will basically be able to SMS, Call, and use the PIM - nothning else - no data, no web, no IM, no MMS, no software installations (because those are done over GPRS) :-)

I remember in the unlocking email that someone got for a Sidekick that stated the device would only be good for SMS/Phone. That being said, if he could get a dev key (unlikely, but yeah), he could load stuff, and I think he could dump the PIM info. His best bet might be to get the sidekick on prepaided, unlock it after 90 days, then SIM swap, and use Intersync for Sidekicks.

Unlocked sidekicks (hiptops, whatever) will provide phone and SMS service on a non-hiptop-enabled carrier - both of those protocols use the carrier's existing GSM network.
