I'm not very smart with cell phones, but if i went to best buy and bought the z520a for cingular for 9 bucks could i just pop my old sim card into the new phone and be ready to go?

yes you can

you may have voice mail issues you can do what I did (copy the voicemail # from your old phone and set it up as the forward locations on your Z520) or you can call cingular and get them to migrate you to the new voicemail system.

How are you getting a z520 for $9? Bet you money that's for a brand new activation, Best Buy is notorious for their upgrade pricing being awful.
