Siemens S40 WAP function

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have recently purchased a Siemens S40 phone and I am having problems with the WAP function. My service is with Voicestream and I have spoken with the technical staff both, here and in the UK. According to them, the PHONE DOES NOT work on the Voicestream network. I compared all setting and nothing. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know at: dgk1964@bellsouth.net

Thanks

It should work... you'll need:
* a) data services enabled on your account
* b) dialup service number
* c) gateway address

If VoiceStream doesn't have their own dialup number and/or gateway... just use a normal dial-up ISP and a public gateway. It works. WAP isn't really "supported" on my network but since I have data services, etc, I have no problems with it.

Beleive me, I tried all that. Voicestream has their own dial ups and gateways. etc, but no joy. I did, however, play with some settings using my own dial-up number and a different IP and wap homepage that a kind gentlemen from Siemens provided me with, but it should still work on Siemens dial-up, IP address and homepage.

Thanks..

What did you try... did it work?

If not... can you connect to the internet through your computer? (You need to make sure data services are enabled. Sometimes they goof and they're not...) What gateway are you using? Some gateways just plain "don't work". Some pages like MSN and Yahoo, though they claim to work, don't work! (Okay, some load, but others don't... the Hotmail section doesn't work!).

The settings that I am using are as follows: please if you have any other settings that may work better, please let me know. 1) My ISP dial-up #, 2)connection type is analog, 3), data speed is 14400, 4), my isp user and password, 5), IP address is 212.97.206.33, 6), port is 9201 and 7), homepage is http://wap. yahoo.com. I do find that the yahoo site doesn't provide as much info as possible..

I look forward to your response.

Okay... a few problems, some are more significant than others.

1) Your dialup number should be okay...

2) Analogue sounds right...

3) The network speed here is limited to 9600, and possibly yours too... if 14400 fails, try 9600.

4) Username and password sounds good

5) I think your gateway IP belongs to MOBILIX network in Denmark. Do you know for a fact that it's an open, free gateway? Lots of gateways are locked and aren't accessible to the public! Try another gateway, like 207.232.99.98 courtesy of WapTunnel!.

6) Port is right.

7) I've tried it through 5 gateways/services and others have tried as well... http://wap.yahoo.com DOES NOT WORK (so it doesn't matter about your other settings, it won't load up!). Try another page, like Google @ http://www.google.com/wml.

** If anybody else has been able to load wap.yahoo.com, please let me know how you did it! I even tried a gateway with secure/SSL services (which I was told would solve the problem) but no luck, it didn't work! I loaded up another (unknown?) Yahoo page through a UK Gateway, but it wasn't wap.yahoo.com... **

wap.yahoo.com did work, but not the entire page.. As for the gateway, yes it did work, but I will try the one that you provided.. Thanks

I agree with you - WAP does not work on S40 - I suggest you send an email to the Siemens tech support people. The higher the number of e-mails they receive, the higher the chance they will upgrade the S40 software.

After playing around with the S40 and several settings, I did manage to get the S40 to work on Siemens.

So, it does, in-fact work.. Thank you all for your help.

I am glad it works for you. The settings that I am using are as follows: 1) My ISP dial-up # (Compuserve), 2)connection type is analog, 3), data speed is 14400, 4), my isp user and password, 5), port is 9201, homepage is http://wap. yahoo.com. I am not sure where to get the IP addresss?

Henry

Henry,

You should be able to get the IP address from your Cellular Carrier, also your dial-up number...

WAP works fine for me and many other people with the S40. Unless your network specifically offers 14,400, you're stuck with the 9600 standard.

Two more things... make sure you can place data calls. (Many networks in North America limit them.) Second, if you don't have an IP address, check out WapTunnel.com.

Thank you for your quick reply. My service provider is Voicestream. So far I was unable to set my S40 (wen trying the Call Setup, Call types - I get only one choice - "Next incoming" or "All incomming" - I can then chose Data as opposed to speach or fax.

I chose "Data" but so far I am unable to get my browser to work.

Another option is I believe under "Network services". My choices are "Call divert". I chose Call Divert, then All calls, then Activate, then "Data services", - but the message I get is "Sorry, no service available" - this inpite of the fact that I was advised by Voicestream that istream is now active.

Would you know what am I doing incorrectly?

Henry

I don't have a "data" option on my phone, only voice calls. (My provider probably disabled it via SIM.) Either way, it's the wrong setting... your data/WAP connection has nothing to do with these options. For data services, you'll need to make sure that Voicestream has it active, not your phone.

Call divert = call forwarding... not data either, unfortunately.

What WAP/Browser settings are you using?

The settings I am using (as recommended by a VoiceStream technical support person) are as follows: 1) VoiceStream dial-up # +1 913 244 0821, 2)connection type is analog, 3), data speed is 14400, 4), user and password - blank, 5), port is 9201, 6) IP address is 216.155.165.050 7)homepage is http://wap. myvoicestream.com.

New York City settings and menus may be different from Canadian settings? Just a thought.

Henry,

Try this:

1) Select the Menu option.
2) GO TO THE MESSAGE SETUP UP.
3) Select Browser menu.
4) select profile setup.
5) Select "view profile".
6) Go to the Voicestream profile.
7) Select edit.

Now, the settings should be as follows:

1) Profile name = whatever you want to call it , (Voicestream).
2) Dial-up = +19132440821.
3) Connection type should be ISDN.
4) Data speed should work at either 14400 or 9600, ( Mine is set to 14400 and works fine).
5) User name shouldbe WAP in capital letters!!!.
6) password should be typed as blank...... DO NOT LEAVE BLANK!!
7) IP address = 10.168.200.050
8) Port = 9201
9) Homepage = http://wap.myvoicestream.com
10) Idle time should not matter much except for the time to connect, so you can set to 300 .

All these settings work and you should be able to get onto the Voicestream WAP site.

I hope this helps.

Let me know how it goes.

Unfortunately the response I get on the S40 is "Sorry, Network Not Responding" .

I think there is a hardware issue problem making it a problem for the S40 units to access the WAP services. A VoiceStream person told me that the S40 is not a GPRS phone. It's an HSCSD phone. I am not a technician and I do not know the difference. It seems that Voicestream requires a GPRS phone...

The person that you spoke with is incorrect!!! If you wish, you can call me at 337-255-0204 and we can talk about this, but rest assured,,,, the S40 is WAP and DOES work;;;;..

Danny,

I tried the settings that you recommended and I too, get "Network not responding". If I place my SIM card in a Motorola handset supplied by Voicestream it all works fine, so presumably my account settings are ok from the Voicestream end.
Do you have any contact numbers at Voicestream that gave you the information that worked for you?
Is it because I am in Southern CA and accessing via the PACBell, now Cingular network?

Any thoughts appreciated.

John,

I have spoken to the tech support personnel, both in the US as well as the UK, and I must admit, not very helpful. I think that they read off of a script. I settings should work. Did you type the word blank in for the password? The reason for this is that it can't be left blank.

If all else fells, you can use as the dial-up number , your ISP provider, for the username your isp username and your password. use analog and 9600. Try the IP address -
212.97.206.33. And for the homepage, try http://wap.yahoo.com

Hope this helps,

Danny

The S40 supports HSCSD but not GPRS if the network provides it. The network here doesn't have HSCSD services so it just uses the good ol' data connection (and not HSCSD high speed).

If you can't connect to Voicestream's WAP services, try a local ISP instead. Thats what I use.

Danny - Should I use the IP address of my IS provider or the Yahoo IP? MY ISP happens to be CompuServe )part of AOL).

I get the message on my Siemens S40 that the Network rejects my attempts, whilei continuously connect withut problems when using my notebook.

Any suggestions you may have will be appreciated?

Henry

...neither. The IP address isn't the host you're connecting to. The IP address is the address of the gateway which the phone will use to get the data.

To my knowledge, your phone makes a request to the gateway which is the actual one that gets the page(s) off the web. Without a gateway, you can't do anything. Not just anything can be a gateway, either... the service running at any certain IP must be specially setup as a gateway.
