Worn out V400?

This is my second V400 from Cingular and this one as lasted just short of 2 years. Ironically that is the committment period to the service. Well the open/close ability has stopped working altogether. I no longer can "open to answer" or "close to disconnect". What is a real pain is that I can't bring the screen saver back to see a missed call without pressing button which clears the screen.
Is there a fix for cleaning up the open/close sensor is or should I cost up the dough for a replacement phone since this one is 2 years old?
PS> In the Dallas market, there are many offers for under $50 Razr V3's but no one will do an upgrade for that price. So I am waiting until Feb for my contract to be up. Any other advice?
