I only want to get my video/photos from my Moto V551

So I bought a data cable thinking all I'd have to do was plug it into a USB and grab my videos and photos from my phone, but clearly it needs a driver. Do I have to buy motorola mobile phone tools to accomplish this? Would it be better to just get a Bluetooth dongle and connect that way (I can see the dongle being useful for other things too). If the recommendation is to go with a BT dongle, then any recommendations on which one? Thanks in advance for any help. Nick

BT dongle is easier i think, the v551 has that 300,000 pin adapter and MobilePhoneTools sometimes takes awhile for me, meaning when i plug the phone into the computer, i need to wiggle the cord to get all the pins aligned, then the computer is going crazy recognizing all the new drivers (every single one, every single time). maybe it's just my phone/computer/usb cord, but i bought a BT dongle and i've had no troubles.

any BT dongle will do, i bought a cheap one off e-bay for about $15 including shipping. it came with BlueSoleil software and that works very well for me. if you want ease, buy a bt dongle..if you plan to make any mods to the seems or flash/flex your phone, use the cord. you can download MPT for free if you search in the right places.

Thanks for the input. One clarification--if I get the BT dongle, do I still need to get MPT or will my PC just treat the v551 as an external drive?

You need a driver for motorola. It can be found without phonetools.. although i would deffinitly suggest phone tools.. great program.

The bluetooth manager will let you explore the phone.. on 551 it will show an audio, images, and i believe video folder.. which you can drag and drop/cut and paste to/from like an external drive.

You don't need drivers if you are using a BT adapter. All of the Moto V series phones that I have used include the OBEX profile as part of its BT implementation.

BT is definitely the way to go if you don't need to seem edit or perform any other more advanced phone hacking. Plus, you can use the same BT adapter with ANY phone that features BT for transferring pics, audio and video.

Good points.

Do know that if you are using Windows XP SP2 that you may need to load BT drivers though. Service Pack 2 introduced it's own way of dealing wit bluetooth that does not seem to play nice with most devices.

SP2 does include drivers for BT adapters, but I wouldn't use XP's BT manager. In either case, you need to install drivers for the BT adapter and not the phone, if you will be using BT.

here is some very usefull BT information for anyone who is thinking about going the BT dongle route. I know it saved me from pulling out my hair lots of times.

Very helpful. Thanks xbox and everyone else. I've ordered a BT Dongle and will hopefully soon be in business.
