Sony S710a: 2nd party call waiting notification disabled

If I made a call to another party, I was able to see whether or not they were already on the phone. (While dialiing, prompt came up explaining other party was on call waiting.) For one reason or another, it doesnt work anymore and the manual says nothing about this feature. Is this a system or phone problem? how can i resolve it?
