Nokia 6682 owners w/NEW f/w, please check in!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Okay, I know that hee-yuge 6682 thread makes it hard to follow an individual question, so I'm posting this one. (Sorry, mods, if this is a no-no, just let me know, and I'll take a time-out.)

I had the 6682 for a week, old f/w (3.01.1). Loved the phone, hated the problems. Now the new f/w is out, at least in some areas, it seems. So you lucky chaps and chapettes who have the phone with the new firmware, please let us know if you have encountered any issues, either the old ones rearing their ugly heads, or any new ones. Especially those of you who have now had both firmware versions.

Speaking for myself, the 6682 I had did not have the call log issues or restarting, but it would not dial out half the time. I noted on the big thread that a few people mentioned something similar, but not as many experienced that issue as they did the others. BTW, I was using the new 3G SIM, which may have made a difference in what problems I was having.

So, how is the new f/w working out? Please tell us! Also, please specify exactly what SIM you are using.

Just signed up for Cingular service this past saturday. Ported from Verizon. Got the Nokia 6682. Firmware is V 4.62.0

I've never had Cingular before but i did read on this forum about the ongoing firmware issues. I waited to sign up for Cingular because i really wanted this phone. I got the phone in Union, NJ. The phone is amazing. There are no issues at all. The phone does not reboot by itself and the call log does not disappear when you turn the phone off and on. No issues whatsoever. The phone has great reception and the call quality is outstanding. My only gripe is that sometimes the OS tends to lag when accessing certain menus but that is not a very big deal. Great phone.

i have had my 6682 for about a week and love it. i also acquired a 3G sim, but the gentleman at the store said it shouldn't be necessary with the new firmware, but i wanted it anyway.

it is an awesome phone and exactly what i am looking for. phone first, outlook compatible, web browser.........

my only complaint would be cingular getting on the ball with 3g (i know this isn't a 3g phone), but it would be great to have a phone, and a network like this to take advantage of all it could do....

Posted by: Rcadden

Does anyone with the new firmware have a phone with the old firmware as well that could give us a changelog? Added features/capabilities?

Posted by: pvn

Will cingular upgrade the firmware in-store?

No.

just so I'm clear (and without digging through that huge thread) the newest firmware revision is 4.62.0, correct? Going hunting in the stores tomorrow - regardless of if I can find one I'm going to return my 2125 and just order online

Can I call cingular and get a replacement 6682 yet with the new fw?

No.

My XBM replacement that they shipped had the old FW on it and they wouldn't do jack to make it right.

i've had my 6682 with the new firmware and 3G sim (which i didn't ask for, glad i have it though) for about a week, and HOOOO-WEE am i having major problems!
1) the alarm has caused the phone to freeze up, almost making me late to work once.
2) the phone just today froze, causing the battery to rapidly drain
3) why is this phone so damned SLOW?
4) random phone freezing, no real reason behind it.

irritations:
i have a mac. don't flame me, it's just what i prefer. now, when i bluetooth over to my friends Series 40 phone, i see a picture, sound, and movie dir. same thing with my old Moto v600. with the 6682, there is no dir, so i cannot directly upload files from my computer to the phone. any files i upload show up as an SMS from a bluetooth device. SO ANNOYING WHEN TRYING TO SEND LOTS OF FILES!!

i really do not want to have to return this phone, but all the freezing is just retarded. this is a PHONE, people. the last thing i want to happen is have my trusty phone BSOD on me.

Posted by: Caiman1900

My 6682 froze when I tried to use the alarm, very annoying.

Posted by: Rcadden

For the freezing, try a hard reset. *#7370#. I know most people will say not to, but here's why. Mine, when I got it (old fw) had TREMENDOUS memory issues. Like sometimes I would have nothing else active on the phone and I'd try to take a picture and it would say insufficient memory. TERRIBLY instable. I did a hard reset after about a week and a half of use, and it's gone. WOrks fine, other than the call logs and contacts question. And even the call log is gone now that I have a 3G sim. If that doesn't work, freakin XBM it.

i want an 6682 so bad. but its too expensiv 300 smackaroos

Posted by: blumoto

I just put the new 3g sim in my unbranded 6682(3.01.1) and still no issues, no freeze ups, restarts, mem issues or call log problems, I wonder what the heck was causing all of the problems with the cing. branded 6682's, 2 of my friends bought their 6682's(both unbranded about Aweek after I did) and they have no issues either.

Posted by: ajmoo

blu, what does it take to unbrand one of these 6682's? is it $$$?

Posted by: childers2

I got one from XBM and it had the old fw i then called back and they sent me a full kit and it did have the new fw... No problems so far.

As far as I know I haven't seen anyone go from a cing brand fw to the unbranded nokia 3.01.1 fw, but I see no reason why it could not be done as long as a phone can be flashed it can go from any fw available, but the trick is getting someone to do it, I really have no idea why the cing. fw is so messed up it has got to be cing. related but where and why I have no idea(then again I am no tech.)

Sounds like quite a mess... Forgive me for asking the obvious, but you have checked the f/w version to make sure it is actually the new f/w, right? (Not trying to be insulting, just thorough.)

I got mine last Thurs., no probs yet, but I haven't tried to use the alarm--I'll give that a shot and see what happens.

Have any of you still having problems installed the Nokia PC Suite, which dumps a bunch of programs onto the phone? I have installed it, but so far the only thing I've used was the voice recognition--which works great, but was free on my Moto MPx220, so I'm not likely to pay for it when the phone tells me my 7-day trial is up. Anyway, I'm asking this, so I/we can maybe narrow down where the problems may be coming from. I.e., still Cing's heroically mangled f/w, or installed apps, or planetary alignment, etc., etc...

On the plus side, I've found the phone to be noticeably better at reception than my MPx220, w/clearer call quality, less background noise, and stronger RF. I'm using the Jabra BT250 (I think is the model #) headset, and have been able to get farther away from the 6682 than I could from the MPx220, before the crackling starts.

In case it hasn't already been mentioned, there seem to be 2 different case colors for this phone: silver and pearly white (a la iPod?). Naturally, the one I got from Cing was the boring silver, and it seems most everyone else is getting silver as well. Oh, well...

Phone takes just as long as my Windows-based MPx220 to boot up--maybe a tad longer, have to time it. As has been asked here in the past, there is no Cing branding imagery during bootup, just the goofy Nokia handholding thing. (Kind of reminds me of the opening credits of "Six Feet Under".)

There is a short delay before main menu opens. And of course the highlight is centered on Cing's "Media Mall", which I accidentally started once. Does anyone know if these icons can be reordered?

Anyway, I plan to keep playing w/the phone for the 30 days I have to evaluate (bought it local), and will report back in here if I have more problems.

Did you just send back the bad handset or did you send back all the old stuff (phone, battery, back, box, charger etc....)

I have the unbranded 3.01.1 and it's very unstable. I have apps crash all the time, the phone constantly reboots and it won't load alot of web pages i read dude to the low memory problem. I'm very dissappointed as I loved my 6620.

This is the 2nd phone I've gotten in two weeks that really doesn't work like it should, now I'm hunting for another replacement.

Posted by: Rcadden

I'm telling you guys, I had the same problems with mine at first, and a hard reset solved all of the problems aside from the call log. Before I reset, there were times I couldn't even take a picture, it would give me a low memory alert, even with nothing else running on the phone. It crashed often. I hard reset it and I have been fine for months now.

As far as the menu and accidentally starting MEdiaMall, you can certainly rearrange the menus. In fact, I have a folder that I labeled "crap" and put at the bottom of the menu, it's got all the Cingular crap in there, along with other stuff I don't use. If you didn't look in that folder, you'd never know my phone was branded (new housing, too).

So far I have not had any of those issues and I crammed my 6682 with all sorts of bs and I have never had the low memory warning even when I had more than one app open at a time and I alwyas leave the new y to go app open from start up and my web browser displays every web page I have went to as well as the installed opera browser. I guess it must be batches and luck of the draw if you haven't tried a hard reset(rcadden seems to have fixed some issues with the reset) yet give it a shot it seems to solve alot of issues, if that dosen't work then try nokiusa and see what they might be willing to do for you. good luck.

I thought I was the only one having problems!

Totally agree with the current problems with the Cingular branded 4.62.0 f/w
Just when I thought the call log issue went away, out pops a few more bugs. Here's my 5 cents....

The phone would freeze up
* Although it hasn't been happening consistantly, the phone has frozen up when the 6682's alarm starts to go off. This has happened twice since I've gotten the phone two weeks ago. Since I use the phone's alarm to wake me up in the morning, I've needed to keep a backup alarm in case the phone freezes.

* The other times when the phone freezes up, it has occurred for no apparent reason. This random freeze has occurred about 4 times since I had the phone. So far, I've been crash free for the past 3 days..

* Phone does take a while to startup when it is powered on. I've timed it several times and it take about 22 sec to see the Nokia handshake image and then another 10 seconds to get to my "Active Standby" screen. Total time from start to finish is 33 seconds. That's a long bootup process for a phone. Fortunately, I don't power on/off that often, but it's not that big of a deal. I also find that the menu system does seem a little slow.

* Out of memory issue is still there.. but usually when I use opera to load a huge website. Again.. not that big a deal since browsing high content websites on this phone isn't that great.

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons and I think that the new 4.62 firmware addressed the major problems with the old firmware. In my book, the 6682 is a keeper!

Posted by: flexman

I received a new 6682 thru XBX 4 days ago. Firmware version 4.62.0. Fortunately, after 4 days of heavy use I have not encountered any of the aforementioned problems (call log, alarm, low memory, freezing, rebooting etc) with this phone.

This phone works smooth and sweet. Found it difficult to give up my 7610, but so far I have no regrets whatsoever. I will continue testing and report any changes.

Posted by: Rcadden

I went through the menus with my 3.01.1 and 4.62.0 firmwares next to each other, and noticed that the newer one has a call restrictions menu. kinda neat.

Posted by: pikapp168

I have the old FW and since I have got the 3G sim card all my issues have gone away! No issues here!

Posted by: Rcadden

same here. I'm testing the 3g SIM in my 4.62.0 today. We'll see if I have anything to report.

Posted by: zeonstar

How can I look up the firmware on the 6682? I just got the phone and don't know much yet. Total newbie. Where and how do I enter the code to check it? I'm sure this has been asked but I don't have time to look it up. Thank you!

Posted by: noneother2

newb here too
got this from Googling "how to check firmware on 6682"

You type in *#0000# and it tells you the firmware version. I just got mine last week from a corporate store and its the new firmware. If yours is the new one it should say V4.62.0

HOWEVER, who can tell me to how to shut off the NOKIA POWERUP Jingle, whne the hands shake, on any profile other than SILENT???

please

Posted by: zeonstar

Thanks! That worked for me. I am current too, so that's good to know. However I am having one error I have seen that other people have had. I had only SKIMMED the forum when I saw this (I had not yet gotten the phone so I didn't pay close attention) but I am occationally getting the low memory error that is apparantly common. It usually happens when I open the camera and take a picture. I have not installed anything on the phone or memory card besides what came on it so I still have about 35 megs left. Is there a way to fix this occational error? I don't know if I have the "new" sim cards that I have also seen talk about on here. Mine says Cingular and 64k on it.

Wirelessly posted (My toy: Nokia6682/2.0 (4.62.0) SymbianOS/8.0 Series60/2.6 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

No bad reports with the 3g sim. Call logs are intact, copy sim contacts question is gone. I did have a little trouble with opera, but that was expected. In fact i had already Emailed the netfront people. Definitely highly suggest uninstalling opera asap.

Posted by: rader023

I have had 3.01.1 for about four months, and only call log/sim contact issues. About a month ago i stopped having any issues. Still trying to figure out why, but knock on wood it continues.

I would like to know the answer to this question as well

Posted by: ero2

I know it is OT, but I just picked up a new FW 6682 today and had an issue where it asked me to close some programs because it did not have enough memory, and I remember reading somewhere that you press a button which tells you all the open apps, and then you can close them, but do not remember what button it was...

Posted by: Gunner1

You hold down the nokia applications button on the front of the phone (lower left button) for 1-2 seconds and the app list comes up.

I just got an unbranded 6682 from Amazon and got this error, but I remembered from my 6600 days that these Series 60 phones use available storage space as application memory. So if your memory card is full, you're more likely to get these memory issues. So I removed all the demo games, some of the useless imaging apps, all the silly Real videos from the gallary and now I have 43MB free on my card and can usually run at least three apps at the same time. I can also use the camera without memory errors. Hope this helps!
