Tomtom Mobile 5 for North America?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Does anyone here know if Tomtom Mobile 5 be used with North American Maps? The product on the website only support European maps. I'm interested in this product, but it's useless for me unless I can use it with North American maps.

On the PocketPC, I switched from TomTom to CoPilot Live some time ago. IMO, CoPilot is a far superior product. I just got an i-mate SP5 and ordered CoPilot Live 6 Smartphone. Ping me in a week or two and I'll let you know how it is. It comes with North American maps and European/Australian maps are available as an addon.

I heard Copilot doesn't have good Canadian coverage/maps. U.S maps are important as I go to Boston and New York City annually, but I live in Canada and that is the most important to me.

I just cancelled an order with ALK/CoPilot because I heard bad things about the program like Some Streets that have been there for over 30 years not known on the maps.

I dont mind paying the price tag....but it better work if I do.

Wow...hadn't heard anything like that before. From what I've heard, the Tom Tom products are really good.

Where in Canada? I've used CoPilot in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa without any issues?

I've been using Mapopolis on my PPCs and smartphones (including the SP5) with no problems here in Canada and the USA. Very easy-to-use app and has never failed me. Cheers, Sabesh.

I used to love it but it sucks on my SP5m. All sorts of refresh problems and I had trouble connecting Bluetooth.

Strange .. no problems here whatsoever. Did you use ver 4.6? It's the one that's optimized for WM5 (free download). You also have to set comm 6 (or 7) as your outgoing BT port.

So the latest version of Mapopolis is fully compatible with WM 2005? I went to the Mapopolis website and I'm not very amazed with the color and interface of the software.

How accurate is the software? Did you notice any streets missing? Are the streeet names legible? Thanks.

Yes, the app doesn't have the useless eyecandy as others, but the streets names are very legible (fonts are adjustable); no missing streets so far & has been quite accurate for me thus far. Some screens caps below. Tell you what: Let me know a missing Canadian street from TomTom (which I also have but now removed) or any other app and I will let you know if Mapopolis has it or not. Cheers, Sabesh.

I got some canadian maps for TomTom from usenet, but I haven't tested them yet because I'm waiting for my GPS receiver to arrive.

I use TomTom 5 on my SP3I, its the euro version and for US, I use the maps from the TomTom 5 PPC version, works perfect! You just need to move the US map folder over to your storage card.

Of course, for some reason, you can just get rid of the euro maps completely, I have one still on the card, so the only downside is about 40 megs of my card space is eaten up with something I will never use.

Thanks for the information Sabesh. I can't think of any streets right now, but if it's accurate enough for you, I'll consider it in the future.

I know Mapopolis is a great program, even still in it's beta stage. But can anyone confirm that it is working for WM5 Smartphone devices?

I used to use it with my SMT5600 just fine, but that app seems to have many graphic rebuild issues and bluetooth connection problems with my SP5m.

The latest non-beta version works fine with my WM5 device (i-Mate SP5). Just like in earlier WM versions (ex: MPx220), pair up the BT GPS with the phone using a non-secure BT serial connection. Set the outgoing comm port to either 6 or 7. Leave the incoming comm port alone.

I notice that Mapopolis runs faster than TomTom on my SP5. But the again, Mapopolis has always been faster than the others in PDA or smartphone versions. Once you have the Mapopolis maps (new versions), you can use them in both PDAs and smartphones using the freely downloadable apps for each O/S.

Cheers, Sabesh.

I'm just curious, can you do any of the plannings on the desktop and transfer it to the smartphone? Or everything has to be done on the phone for both Mapopolis and Tomtom?

I'm using Mapopolis on a 2125, and it works fine. You'll need one of the beta versions (I'd suggest 4.63), otherwise it won't work with the WM5 contacts database.

You can see this thread at GPSPassion for details:

I just received a call back from tech support at TomTom. They said TomTom Mobile 5 is currently reserved only for western europe and there are no plans on expanding it to North America. No good reason why....that's just the way he told me.

Posted by: encece

By the way.....sorry for my old post where I stated that Mapopolis no longer works on my SP5m. I needed to download the latest version and now it's working fine.

can someone tell me where I can get the Canadian Maps for Mapopolis?
