Treo 650 FAQ

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Croix9602

More and more, we see the same questions asked in this forum, so I thought maybe we could address some of the more popular ones in a single post. So, here goes. Feel free to add what I miss, and maybe we'll edit it in to a single post so that we can get it stickied.

Data Versus Radio
When you send a text message with your 650, it will use the cellular radio, just as any other phone does. However, sending picutre messages will use a data connection. Check with your provider to find the data plan (whether unlimited, pay as you go, etc) that works best for your usage. The individual provider forums of HoFo are SPECTACULAR at answering most questions. Just make sure you use the Search function of the forums before you go posting, else you might be overcome by the flaming trolls

Be careful when browsing the web to disconnect your data after you use it, especially if you do not have an unlimited plan. Many horror stories have been told of multi-hundred-dollar bills for data used by an ornery data connection.

Must-Have Software
It's widely accepted that there are a few things that you need to have to make the Treo a very comfotable piece of hardware. These programs accomplish (many agree) tasks that should have been built into the phone already, but simply were not.

VolumeCare - Tweak your system volume to usable levels.
BT Mute - Volume fix for Bluetooth headsets.
Ringo Pro - MP3 Ringtone Software.
LightWav - MP3 Ringtone Software
TCPMP - FREE media player for XviD, etc.
PocketTunes - Arguably the best media player for the 650. Streaming audio!
VeriChat - Like Trillian, a multi-service instant messenger.

Please see THIS POST for a rather extensive, HoFo-user-created list of great applications.

Remember that not everyone's Treo runs the same. The combination of applications that works well for your friend might just cause your Treo to do a reboot loop from hell This, among other reasons, is why a number of Treo users SWEAR by Backup Buddy

GSM Versus CDMA Versus...
Different providers use different communications standards, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each. To get a more in-depth view, please read the Provider Forums. Long story short, if your phone is GSM, don't go trying to get it to work on Verizon's network. Likewise, if your phone is CDMA, chances are that Cingular will just look at you funny when you try to connect it.

Bluetooth
The Treo 650 uses Bluetooth 1.1, and to the best of anyone's knowledge, that won't be changing anytime soon. What that means is that you will NOT be able to listen to mp3 files thru your Bluetooth headset, nor does the Treo 650 support voice dialing via Bluetooth. There are programs available to make voice dialing possible thru the phone's speakerphone microphone, but so far, that is all we have. If Bluetooth 1.2 is important to you, perhaps you should look into the new Treo 700w, which will be available from Verizon shortly (keeping in mind that this post is dated 5 Jan, 2005.)

Arguably, there is no "best" bluetooth headset for the Treo. Treonauts has done some rather extensive testing of available bluetooth headsets, and has put together this chart as a guide.

Again, two people could use identical phones and headsets, with different results. Sometimes it's a matter of trial and error. Luckily, most places where you'd buy your headset have a good return policy.

Memory Cards
The Treo 650 can support (without any outside work) SD memory cards up to 2gb in size. These are great for holding your pictures, movies, mp3's and anything else that you happen to use but don't want to store on your phone's internal memory (mp3's actually cannot be played from the internal memory, so the SD card is a requirement for MP3 player purposes).

Further, BackupBuddy also makes a product called BackupBuddy VFS that will backup your Treo to the SD card, and allow you to restore from it as well, in the case of a hard reset on your phone.

Cases
There is so much personal choice involved in deciding which case is right for you, that to try to say what is "best" would be fruitless. There are literally hundreds of cases available, and each has their highs and lows. Look around, think REALLY hard about what you need in a case and then buy the one that fits your needs and preferences.

Websites
As far as exhaustive information goes, I don't think anyplace can beat HowardForums. However, there are a number of great Treo sites available, so it's only fair to give them a mention -

Treonauts
MyTreo.net
TreoCentral
Handango
Freeware Palm

Crashing/Resets/OOPS!
It's a computer, let's face it. Sometimes, computers lock up or don't act as we want them to. Well, the Treo 650 lacks a power switch to shut off the PDA side of the system, so we users have to resort to a soft reset. This is performed by using your stylus (or other small object) tip to depress the button that sits beside the battery (to the left). This means that you'll have to remove your battery cover, but hopefully you will not have to do this very often, so it's only a small annoyance.

For instructions on a Hard/Warm reset, please refer to Palm's website for instructions FOUND HERE

Other "Tips and Tricks" for your Treo 650 can be found HERE. (Thanks to geekaren for that link.)

Etc.
For certain, no ONE post could ever cover EVERYTHING you'd want to know about your Treo. But at least this is a starting point, and hopefully will answer a number of the "most asked" questions that are seen in this forum. Don't forget to check the provider forums as well. They hold a WEALTH of information, not only about the provider, but most of them have dedicated sections for phone types/brands, as well.

Last but not least, welcome to Howard Forums! Sit back, use the search function and enjoy!

Ideas? Additions? Anyone?

Posted by: cjmedina

what about memory cards.
treo can handle up to 1 gig sd card or mmc
you can use java apps on treo but you need to get the ibm software patch first

Posted by: Croix9602

Ah, nice addition. Though it can handle up to 2gigs. I have one.

I hope I'm doing this right, trying to stay within these FAQ. Croix, seems that you got the best of Treo, in other words you know what's good and what isn't. I'm new with Treo, I own a 650. Here's the pain in the neck question: Out of these bluetooth headsets, You said there isn't a "BEST" one, but like I said, I'm new to Treos, and I wanna buy one. Do you own one, if so which one and would you recommend it?

My other question is, how do I add my mp3's on my phone, I already have an SD card, I bought a 512mb card.

Thanx all inputs are appreciated.

Posted by: geekaren

Croix962,
Wow, nice job! Your initial post is so detailed that there isn't much to add.

One thought: Perhaps the faq could include a link to Palm's "650 tips & tricks" page:
http://www.palm.com/us/community/re...ps_treo650.html

I learned from it even after having had my Treo a while, and it may be especially helpful to new users.

Thanks again for putting this together. Looks great!

Posted by: keen1801

Do you mean mp3 or mp3 ringtones? Mp3 ringtones can't be played on there without a third party software being installed to your phone. Mp3 songs can be played on real player on your palm by simply adding them to the root directory of your sd card. There's also another way to play them by hotsyncing them. It's described in the treo manual.

You can put wav ringtones on your phone.

Yes, I own the Treo branded headset, and am VERY happy with it. It seems to be very compatable with all available features of the Treo, and the sound quality is as good as I'd expect it to be. The range...well...it's decent. I can wander 10 feet or so without static. But I think that this is a fault of the Treo 650's bluetooth, and not the headset itself.

As for MP3's, you can use a program called CardExport to turn your 650 into a card reader (slow, but it keeps you from having to remove your card) or you can get an external card reader and, as the person above me said, put the files into the root directory of your SD card.

Odd. I'd love to edit my first post, but it's not giving me the option to do so...

First post edited. Thanks to lgreenberg the mod for his assistance.

Any other mod, please feel free to delete the other posts, so as to keep the thread clean.

How do I listen to music mp3 with the treo, does it come with a headset or can I use a regular 3.5mm headset??

Posted by: lgreenberg

You can use "Real Player" which comes with the Treo.

Some people prefer Pocket Tunes www.normsoft.com

No, it doesn't come with a headset. No, you can not use a regular 3.5mm headset. You'll need to either purchase a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter (can be found at Radio Shack) or a pair of 2.5mm headphones. Seidio makes some ready to go. www.seidioonline.com

Posted by: Croix9602

In order to have stereo sound, you need one of these AND a headphone set of your choice. I like the hybrid ones that have stereo headsets, and a mic for if a call comes in.

I also own the Treo bluetooth headset. My main reason for purchasing it is because I can use one adapter to charge both the phone and the headset. It is small and very light. However, it does have problems around wireless networks (it makes a crackling noise). When I am in my car, I do not have that problem.

Another thing is that some people tell me I sound far away when I use it. Again, that's some people, not all. Overall, it's a keeper. The fact that I don't have to drive around with two car chargers is enough for me. I guess I will have to use it a little longer for any further results.

Posted by: lgreenberg

What format was the ringtone you were sent?

If it was Mp3 you'll need a third party app to use it as a ringtone.

Posted by: Croix9602

There's something on the Treo that can convert sounds to the native format, but I forget where I found it.

I'll look in a bit and post a follow-up.

Posted by: twitch3

There are several sites that offer a free .WAV version. Do a google search. Download it and email it to yourself on your Treo. When you open it, it will install into your sounds. Then you can select it. Worked for me.

Posted by: grafik2

i thought it was MIDI's that worked on treos??

to this sticky as far as my own experience has gone so far, expansion card and ringtone help seem to be the most difficult thing to not be able to find anything to read on

the rest is great however

Posted by: Croix9602

I'm working on an expanded section for ringtones as we speak.

As far as cards, what information are you looking for? It would greatly help me in being able to write it up.

As for the midi and wav thing, they both work.

Hello

I have a question on the Treo 650, is it possible to down load the txt masages from T650 to a PC through synchronizing or copying, if so how can I do It.

Thanks

Posted by: Croix9602

sms2csv will convert them to a plain text, that you can then set to synch.

Nice, very complete list.

Software: TreoAlarm (allows you to get weather anywhere in the world)
FlightStats (gets flight status for any flight, anywhere)

Headset: I've been using the Motorola H500 and it's doing a pretty darn good job. Well, better than the Jabra BT110 it replaced.

Cases: Check out "Speck Products" and their "ToughSkin" line. Never found a case that fits so snuggly without doing any damage to the device.

For GSM phones, FW 1.28 is a must.

Someone I know made a video of a Treo 650 screen replacement:

Hope this guide helps someone, and remember to tune into Jungletrain.net if you like drum'n'bass!! !!

Posted by: jdhore1

Where do you get FW1.28???...i've been looking for it for a month...i hope it will fix all the problems i'm having with my Treo...

Posted by: Croix9602

Posted elsewhere, so here's a copy/paste -

HOWTO: Upgrade Locked Cingular GSM 1.04 --> 1.28
*This will not unlock/lock your phone, this is a firmware upgrade, if you want to lock it, lock it, if you want to unlock it, then unlock it, either way has nothing to do with this thread*
Just got done doing this myself, many thanks to Taroliw for the walk-through, feel free to ask me any question, i'll do my best to answer it, yet I'm no guru. if you I can do this anyone can. not claiming it won't screw up your phone, but worked for me.

you should know that once you do this, there is no going back to the previous version or cingular branded firmware as of now. Thanks jojocat.

PRE-INSTALL
- Read this whole damn thing especially the very last paragraph before doing anything.
- backup all your files with a hotsync, then if you want to be sure, go ahead and export each thing to a file.
- what sucks is I just know some of you won't read this whole thing and will just jump right into it, I can't wait till you put the SD card back in after you have 1.28 installed and you go along with the installation, gonna make me laugh. =-) actually it won't.. just cause I know I'd probably do the same thing. lol.

I upgraded from the install that was on the phone when I bought it. 1.04 or
1.05 I believe.

1. Your going to have to get the 1.23 upgrade first. (for an explanation of why you can't just go straight to the newest 1.28 read below). I am hosting this file on my website via a cable modem, you can easily find it elsewhere though. If my site is down sry.. but after all its a cable modem!
http://www.codywalker.com/temp/Treo650-fw123.zip

*Q: Why can't I go straight to 1.28? Wouldn't that be easier? A: It won't let you so ha! the official ROW (unlocked) updater will not overwrite a non-ROW install.

2. I am going to teach the SD card method. So you have to get the PALM folder (contents of that zip file you just downloaded) onto your SD card. You can plug your sd card into some type of reader so you can copy files onto it, or you can just get "Card Export" and use your treo to do it.
http://palmsource.palmgear.com/inde...re&prodid=44626

3. Copy the "PALM" folder from that zip you downloaded (the whole folder, not just the contents) to your SD card, make sure NOTHING else is on your SD card except this folder.

4. Turn the radio off and remove your sim card
5. remove the SD card
6. take the sylus out and do a soft reset
7. Your sim card and the SD card should NOT BE in your phone. Now place the SD card in your phone and it should pop up with some instructions, just follow them and badda boom. you are going to "HAVE TO" plug your palm in when it tells you to or it won't let you proceed.
8. When it comes up and says select which patch or something like that to use, it will delay about 5-10 seconds before proceeding.. I think I punched the thing like 20 times, just click ok ONCE and wait, don't screw it up!

9. A progress bar will come up and let you know whats going on. after 100% it will come up with what looks like a txt document and code scrolling by, the whole thing takes about 3 min, the progress bar took about 5-8 min.

10. Don't freak out, your phone will power cycle a few times. Your phone will come back up. plug the Sim back in and turn the radio on (hold down power button). go to teh main phone screen, hit the top right "menu" key on your keypad and check the firmware, it should say 1.23. If it does continue to step 11, if it doesnt... cry.. pray... then post =-)

----- 1.23 to 1.28 ----
go to palm one's site and download the update or you can grab it from my site (not gonna be pretty on the bandwidth, I recommend going for palmone site)
my site... http://www.codywalker.com/temp/Treo...pdater_1_13.zip

1. Unzip the installer and run it.
Take YOUR SIM CARD and SD CARD OUT!
2. At this point you should have nothing on your palm, (hope ya backed up!)
3. FOLLOW the on screen instructions, CREATE A NEW USER called "UPGRADE" (this doesn't matter what you name it, just shutup and go with upgrade and listen to a guy thats done it, muah)
4. let it go, when it asks for power, give it power (you can unplug the hotsync cable)
5. it will take you through the same stuff you dealt with in the first 1.23 upgrade. let it go
6. When it comes back up you can hit cancel on your computer (its just going to try and backup stuff back to your palm, but because we used a user called "upgrade', there really isn't anything to backup.
7. plug it in and run a hotsync, use the old user you had and make sure everything is set up right to put it back on your palm.

BADDA BING, BADDA BAM, badda 1.28....

Insert the SIM CARD and turn the radio on, check the firmware (phone, menu, phone info) and it should say 1.28, if it didn't that sucks, god be with you. =-)

*** READ THIS (I learned the hard way) ***
NOW, go to cardexport and connect to desktop BEFORE you put that damned SD card in again, if you don't do it this way, it will try and run the files on the SD CARD. DELETE that damned PALM folder. there ya go. if your dumb and your just now reading this AFTER you put the card in and it says "plug in the power", just take the battery out and take the sim card out, then battery back in, no harm done. if your dumb and you hit ok.. good luck moron, shoulda read this first! Also, wondering why I have this in Bold? I'm a moron and stuck the SD card in and I don't like to think about the rest. Lets just say it wasn't pretty.

ok sounds good to me, I'm a total newb so maybe this is not the best howto, if you want to change it go right ahead. Thanks to all you guys who have helped me in the past. Special thanks to Taroliw for helping me do this. feel free to ask whateva questions you want...

To my knowledge, 1.28 is for the phone only. To get to 1.28, you have to use the 1.13 patch first.

Weird how palm does it, but hopfully there's a method to their madness.

I am a longtime Palm user and am looking to get the Treo 650. I've just started a job that uses Microsoft Outlook 2003 very extensively, including on an Exchange Server.

If I get a Treo 650 and sync it to MS Outlook (I've always synced my Palms to Pam Desktop software), how well will it work?

Any strange issues?

For those that use Pimlico Software's DateBk5, anything I need to be aware of?

Sorry if this is too many questions. I just want to get this right the first time.

Thanks.

Sync to MS Outlook works great. I actually do a hybrid sync to Pdesktop AND Outlook, since outlook doesn't sync pics, files, etc.

I don't have any further experience with Exchange and the like, but I see our Doctors walking thru all the time syncing with Exchange.

That sounds right, but check the Palm website (the url has changed, so I don't have it handy, sorry) to make sure. Just go to the website, click on stuff pertaining to your Treo and there should be firmware sections for all major US carriers.

Great info on the TL! Thanks for that!

My apologies, again, for the delay on updates to this post and the upcoming wiki. I've been doing some heavy class work, so I'm falling a bit behind. However, it's still in the works, so sit tight.

By the way, Treo 700 FAQ coming soon!

Hello, I wanted to know what data plan I should subscribe for an unlocked Treo 650 for Tmobile. Someone mentioned a tzones workaround and I am not familiar with this? Can anyone help me choose a data plan?

Posted by: PianoJazz

When you mentioned below about a hybrid sync, you're talking about just one computer, right? Do you also have experience with syncing to Outlook on two different computers?

How about syncing to Outlook on one computer and to Palm Desktop on another?

Is using the sync software that comes with the 650 all right? Or would Intellisync or Chapura be better? If so, which one?

I'm really interested in the 650, and I just want to make sure I get all my facts straight before plunging in.

Thank you.

Randal -

I use a hybrid sync on ONE computer. As for syncing to multiple computers, I don't see a problem, just make sure that you set your data to merge (that would be my best bet to make certain that you carry the same information at all stations) instead of overwrite, etc.

Outlook on one, PD on another? Same story. I don't see any problems.

The software that comes wit the 650 works quite well for me. I use BackupBuddyVFS in addition, however, and have it backup my data at least once daily.

Posted by: Croix9602

In other words, the Palm doesn't care where it syncs to. The Hotsync conduit on the host computer is all that dicates where information goes.

Posted by: PianoJazz

I really appreciate all your answers. You've been very helpful.

One more (hopefully last) question: Are there any weird things about syncing a Palm Treo 650 with Microsoft Outlook? I know Outlook does not have task-list priorities of 1 to 5 as Palm does, and I know that Outlook does have the ability to assign more than one category to a task or schedule entry.

Do these things cause problems?

If so, are there any tricks-of-the-trade workarounds?

Thanks again.

Randal

I've not had any issues with the dueling OS's. Tho it's true that there are not priority cat's for tasks. I THINK that Outlook will assign cats as you have them assigned to entries, however.

But no, no problems, you just lose a slight bit of functionality. Tho Outlook won't over-write your priorities on your stuff, it will just copy what you have.

Yeah, I just find it a waste when someone who really isn't "new" and has been around here long enough doesn't know to look at phonescoop.

To me, the point of this thread is for the OS/software of the Treo 650 and FAQ's for how-to do things with it.

Also, howard's main site already does phone stats/specs/reviews, why rehash the stats here?

That's so true...if you're just looking for specs look on Phonescoop or Howard's site...It takes a lot less time to get the answer you're looking for and you don't waste people's time.

OK - I admit it - I have too many contacts, about 3,500 to date. I scan them in with CardScan and sync to Outlook. None of my previous phones have done a reasonable job of taking in the contacts, including my current Nokia 9500. Typically they choke part way through the sync process. My question: Anyone have any experience in this - how's the Treo 650 going to handle it ?

Also - I keep a web calendar (iCal) - and use TripleSync to synch to Outlook, then to the phone. Any problems ?

Thanks !

Ringo needs to be taken of the FAQ. The program is worthless.

Posted by: AdamChristopher

what limitations would i have as a mac user? i know i can synch ical but what else functions?

also, if i get the phone but dont want to pay the 110+ dollars for a data plan, (but would get a wifi card) what other limitations would i have?

Posted by: Surfermobile200

ive read in previous threads that WiFi isnt that great on the treo 650, it works but u need to buy an attachment and a new update soon should fix the problems.

Posted by: AdamChristopher

i received my 650 this morning and love it.

only one question, how do i go about (if i can) transferring files over bluetooth (using a g4 powerbook).

i know one of you genius' on here knows the answer.

Posted by: bubbatex

"find" your computer with your Treo first and then list it as a trusted device. You need to click the 'Local' tab on Hotsync (as it defaults to Local USB) and then you need to make sure there is an open port for the BT to communicate to the laptop. Not sure exactly how that works on a Mac. BTW - The instructions should be in the manual.

The 650 only is WiFi capable with a "sled" attachment that cost about $130. I did not notice what carrier you were using, but a data plan should not cost $110/mo. Sprint's basic Vision is only $10 and gives you full email and web access.

I tried it out and made my phone start crashing when ever a call came in
Called treo support and they had me do a hard reset before checking to see if my hotsync actualy took and I had a good back up to restore soooooooo I had to start over from scratch

So whats up with converting the MP3's into custom ring tones??? You guys keep saying 3rd party software, but I have no idea where to get it or even what that mean...Can someone please post step by step on how to get it and then how to do it on your phone. I just got my wife a phone and would love to give it to her with her favorite song already in it when she receives it...Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks guys!!!

Posted by: rlphrss

will i be able to use these with the treo 650? and wat program do i have to have to set my mp3's as a ringtone?

Posted by: GNP

ringo is what I use to set mp3's as ring tones but it costs unless you find a "free" version out there on the net

Posted by: manny6i9

what web site can you find this on...I bought my phone off ebay, BAD IDEA! Phone looks new, but it came in a white box wrapped in newspaper with only the battery and charger. What am I missing?

Posted by: Kabuk1

You're not missing anything, except the original packaging. Nothing essential anyways. Try MyTreo.net for software, and try MRing instead of Ringo. I have heard about and experienced nothing but negativity with Ringo, and MRing has never contributed to one crash. I use MP3Trim & Wavepad to make ringtones, BTW.

Would you know if the WIFI SD card would work with my 650 Treo?

ONE QUESTION I'VE ONLY MADE A COUPLE RINGTONES BECAUSE I HAVENT GOTTON MY TREO 600 YET I SHOULD HAVE IT BY THE END OF THIS WEEK. THIS WILL WORK FOR MY 600 RIGHT OR WILL I HAVE TO CHANGE SOMETHINGS?

THIS MAKES ME MISS MY 8100 BECAUSE I WAS TOO LAZY TO MAKE RINGTONES NOW I KNOW HOW TO DO IT I'M NOT EVEN SURE IT'S GONNA WORK FOR MY MY TREO.

Treo 650 help needed!!! For some reason I can't make a call or text message. It's like my phone is locked or something. I turned the poh one off and on and still can't make a call. I can receive calls and messages, just can't make them. Has anyone had this problem before? Please help...thanks guys

Posted by: Kabuk1

What EXACTLY happens when you try to call or text? List any error messages or crash log data. It could be anything, we need more info to figure out what's going on.

Posted by: importcrew

i had that same problem yesterday. well at least something similar. it worked fine at first and then next thing you know i would try to send a text and it wouldn't send....i kept getting an error about something wrong with a certain number. so i did a soft reset, turned the phone on, and it works fine.

Posted by: manny6i9

I did the same thing...I turned it off and on and it was all good. I thought it was broken or something, LOL!

Just curious if anyone knows how to enable free wap on the Treo 650 or if that is even allowed to be discussed anymore.

I've enabled it on my Motorola E815 phone but want to do the same with the Treo 650 so I can at least read my e-mail. Thanks.

Posted by: Kabuk1

I have the text problem from time to time too. It seems to be a service problem though. I talked to CS about it when I was having data problems & they said it could either be the recipient's service or due to tower problems. I have never had to reset, I just resend the msg, sometimes 2 or 3 times, & it always goes through.

Free WAP requires editing the servers. I don't know of a way to do that on the 650. Unless it's something you could do like when you set up a Bluetooth DUN. But again, i'm not SURE of any way to do this.

It works, but not without some SERIOUS modification of the firmware. Modification that requires a hard reset before going back to normal service.

You might wanna add that 4GB sd cards can work with rom changeing and The treo 7700p is a good solution for 4GB cards out of the box.

Dose anybody know were i can find the info and how if there is a way to unlock the factory programs on a Verizon treo 650 i am trying to help a friend with his treo. If this is a repeat question sorry if there is a link in the fourm i would be very greatfull for the help thanks.

where can i get a faster and free browser, better than Blazer?

Posted by: jreagles16

To answer the question about removing verizon apps look in to the pal os section of about flashing. What you are looking for i think is called flashing a phone. But don't get it confused with flashing a razor. Flashing a treo is different. It is also known as custom ROM.
Here is a helpful link that michelkenny stated:http://mytreo.net/treofaq/Treo

oh I have heard Xiino is pretty good as a blazer.

I hope this helps?

Without a wifi sled, no. Though there is an SDIO hack/card that works, but it's sketchy at best.

Posted by: benjimatt

i hear that hack doesnt even work anymore because of some new firmware that came out

Posted by: johndoe2k4

Doesnt the sled cost anywhere from $300-$400 ? Kinda pricey to just be able to get wifi if you ask me.

I just bought a 2007 Toyota Camery with Bluetooth. I have a Treo 650 and can only receive calls once I have paired with the car. I can dial on the phone and the bluetooth in the car will transmit the number and dial the call. If I try to "dial by Number" through the bluetooth in the car, it attempts to dial, but my Treo 650 never connects. If I do a hard reset to factory defaults, the Treo 650 works perfectly. I have the latest firmware of 1.51 and software via Cingular, 1.17. Once I hotsynch my phone and get all my programs on again, it has the same problem of not being able to "dial out", but can receive calls, or allow me to manually dial on my phone and then work again via the car's bluetooth. Any help or ideas?
Walt

Posted by: fishera

I would help wegenmaier but Im still savin up for my Toyota Prius 2007. Anyway I just wanted to note that for all the people who were wondering about the reliability of the Treo 650 for phone calls, I set a personal best for phone call time.

One conversation = 4 and a half hours strait, not static, not dropping. On T-Mobile.

This is a relevent place to post as Ringo Pro is listed as Must Have software. I had the same problem as Walt, and working together we discovered if we removed Ringo we could dial fine via bluetooth from his Camry, and my Lexus (both Toyota of course...). So be aware, Ringo has some interaction with the Treo 650's bluetooth functionality.

Happy Holidays everyone! Hope you are all well. I've recently acquired the Palm Treo 650 and I truly need your help.

I would appreciate it if anybody could give me step by step instructions on setting up the Internet for the Palm Treo 650? It is an unlocked Cingular version. What would I need to do if I want to surf and email? I will be using a Rogers Prepaid SIM card with this phone.

I was wondering if they have the same thing that Sony Ericsson has in their website? I only had to input certain data on the Sony Ericsson website (like the phone model, my cell number, location, etc), and Sony Ericsson sent an SMS to my P900 (my other phone) and I only had to save the settings, and everything was set. Can I do this too with the Palm Treo 650?

If that can't be done, then I would really be very grateful if someone could help me out here. Please be very basic, precise and patient (consider me an illiterate as I am not very well versed in these things) in enumerating the steps. Please tell me what to press first, what to input, etc. I really don't know much about this phone so the more detailed (and basic) the information/steps, the better it would be for me.

Thank you so much to everyone who would take the time to help me out. And again, Happy Holidays!

Judging by the fact that there is no Media button on the Palm desktop leads me to believe that you do not have the original install CD for the Treo 650 and that you downloaded the generic Palm Desktop from the Palm website.

With that in mind, unless you can get yourself a copy of the install CD, you are pretty much out of luck (due to copyright issues as each software program is specifically licensed for the specific device it originally came with) as the generic palm desktop does not include specific features that are normally found in the install CDs specific to the devices but merely a barebones one.

If you just need to transfer the pictures to your computer, you simply need to copy them over to the SD card (because if it stays in RAM, it will be a pdb file). Copying them over to the SD card will have it as jpg. Then, if you have a card reader, simply transfer them over using the card reader. The other way is to get a software program like Card ExportII from softick.com or Card Reader from Mobile Stream or even the freeware PFB that allows you to access the files on your SD card in your Treo just like if it were a temporary virtual drive. Then, simply drag and drop.

If you want the CD, you may want to try Ebay.

Posted by: rkel1

Thanks Maceyr....I appreciate the info..After all this looking I suspected that might be the answer. I will look on ebay.

Thanks again....

FOR maceyr:
Hi there. I just wanted to let you know that I have followed the step by step instructions you have written for me regarding the installation of the Internet on my Palm Treo 650 and it has worked. I truly appreciate it a lot.

I do have a few questions and if maceyr or anybody can kindly help, I'd appreciate it a lot.

1. How do I install ringtones in the Palm Treo 650? Do I need to install any software? What software do you recommend? Is there a free software I can download or do I have to order one over the web?

2. I have transferred mp3 songs to my palm treo 650 and I was wondering if I could use them as ringtones? Do I need a special program for this?

If you can give me again step by step instructions then I'd be very grateful once again. Thank you so much and have a nice day.

Posted by: hoahong

hello everyone, I need help with my phone Treo 650, I wondering which cable and software to use for Treo 650 so I can be able transfer mp3 as a ringtone or background as wallpaper for my phone. Where can I find the cable for Treo 650 and software of it. I'm appreciate for your help.

Posted by: maceyr

Palm knowledgebase article on ringtones:

http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=19349

You can also read up on my postings on ringtones:

http://palmdiscovery.netfirms.com/n...s-to-your-treo/

http://palmdiscovery.netfirms.com/n...d-on-your-treo/

http://palmdiscovery.netfirms.com/n...ird-party-apps/

http://palmdiscovery.netfirms.com/n...one-management/

As for wallpaper, on the Treo 650, go into Media. Find the picture you wish to set as wallpaper.

Bring up the Menu. Select "Set As Wallpaper".

Or, you can use third party applications like ZLauncher and others that can allow you to set pictures as wallpaper or backgrounds.

Thank you very much again maceyr. I appreciate it a lot. The information you provided will help me.

Have a great day.

Posted by: sk2sep2304

maceyr, are those network settings only for unlocked treo 650s?

It doesn't work on my Cingular locked 650. It cancels itself.

Posted by: maceyr

The settings, if you are referring to the wapuser1, internet.com and all that stuff, only applies for Rogers' internet settings, for Rogers Wireless customers. If you are on Cingular, obviously, since you aren't on Rogers Wireless, it will kick you out.

If you want Cingular, you have to check out Cingular's settings in order to access the internet. So, go over to the Cingular forum and you should find the settings.

Since jkrj524 is in Toronto and Rogers is the only major GSM carrier in Canada, I gave him the GPRS settings for Rogers.

I've had this happen to me also. I use my T650 to listen to mp3s all the time and my audio jack gets messed up about once every two months (on average) and I have to take it into sprint to get a new one.

Last time it messed up it was keeping a connection rather than losing it. By that I mean when she's receiving calls the phone thinks it's plugged into headphones and is routing the sound there, instead of through the phone. To verify that what I'm saying is right, call her and have her take the stylus and gently move the audio port to either side and it should come through the regular ear speaker. (If you need more clarification on what I'm talking about let me know.)

If this is the case you can try to make it stay by moving it, use the headset always if that doesn't work, or get a new one if you have insurance.

Posted by: kstnhse42

Can u clarify for me? I don't want to damage the phone doing it the wrong way.

Posted by: kstnhse42

I was so busy couldn't return it in time. With the phone being unlocked can Cingular help me or do I have to contact Palm directly. What phone# can I call?

it does the same thing keep going back to the sync

Ratboy so it seems to me you need to get the unit repaired!

I have not had a chance to look through the sticky, but I recently bought a Palm Treo 650 from Ebay that needed a screen replacement. I replaced the screen but now there is a problem with the sound switch at the top of the phone. Its very loose and does not seem to be doing anything. Does anyone have a schematic or a parts list/picture that can show how the switch works?

Alternatively, is there anyway to send the PALM to a company to get repaired?

Thanks!
